“Candle warmers work by heating a candle or wax melt to release its fragrance without the need for a flame,” says Melanie Summers, professional organizer and owner of I Speak Organized. “This method not only maximizes scent dispersion but also extends the life of the candle.”

The candle warmer can either use a bulb to heat the candle from above, or it may have a warming plate below, acting as a coaster to heat up the candle. While igniting the wick of a candle with a match or lighter will use the wax as fuel and melt it away, a candle warmer heats the wax to replace the fragrance, but it does not burn it. A candle warmer also does not cause the wax to evaporate. The only thing that disappears — eventually — is the fragrance, but most experts will tell you that the candle warmer actually extends the lifespan of your candle. 

“With a candle warmer, the wax melts slowly, often resulting in a longer-lasting fragrance compared to burning a candle, which consumes the wax more quickly,” says Tay Baker, founder and owner of Claranda Tay Candles Co.

Are candle warmers safe?

Summers, who specializes in home and organizational strategies with an ADHD perspective, points out that candle warmers are a safer home fragrance option because they reduce the risk of an unattended open flame (who hasn’t walked away from a candle only to scurry back into the room?). She notes that safety with a candle warmer starts with proper placement. If you see a wobbly surface, keep on looking for the next spot.

“Ensure that the warmer is on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from flammable materials,” says Summers.

Also, pay attention to the size of the base on the candle warmer. Not every base is designed to accommodate every size of candle. “Use candles that fit well within the warmer’s design to ensure even heating and prevent spillage,” says Baker.

And don’t get carried away thinking that no flame means no heat. Kate De Palma, Founder of Scented Designs Candle Co., explains, “Keep in mind that its surface and the candle vessel itself can get hot. Without the flame of a burning candle to remind us that it's hot, it may be tempting to move or adjust it while it's not safe to touch.”

When it comes to children and pets, candle warmers can be safer than an open flame, but that doesn’t mean there’s zero risk. A curious child can easily burn themselves on a hot warmer. Baker advises keeping both candle warmers and their cords out of reach of children, while also educating them on what it is and that it is hot. 

Summers adds, “It’s wise to look for models with automatic shut-off features for added security.”

How to use a candle warmer

Candle warmers are super easy to use. If you have a candle warmer that’s similar to a lamp with a bulb above the candle, you’ll place the candle on the base, turn it on, and the bulb will slowly heat the wax, which releases the fragrance. Many of these candle warmers are dimmable so you can choose how much you want the light to heat the wax (pro tip: the higher temperatures will always throw more scent). Others have a timer so you don’t have to worry about forgetting to turn it off.

Six best ways to remove candle wax from upholstery

There are just a couple of ways your best home fragrance experience can be ruined, and spilling hot wax all over your couch would certainly top our list. 

But fret not. Just 15-30 minutes, a handful of items you already have in the house, and a little elbow grease will help you whip that stain right out. The method you choose should be the one that you have everything to hand for already, as dealing with the wax stain ASAP is the key to successful removal, our cleaning pros tell us.

Method 1: Heat

Cleaning and DIY whizz of Home Talk, Amy Poulton says, "The best products to use are the ones you already have at home; the quicker you remove the wax, the better. My preferred method is to use an iron and a paper towel.

"To remove the wax this way, place a paper bag or towel on the area and use a warm iron on the paper to melt and absorb the wax. Change the paper frequently. To finish, blot any remaining residue with rubbing alcohol."

Amy explains how recently, her partner spilled candle wax at home. "I can personally verify that a hairdryer and paper towels work, though it does take a bit of elbow grease," she adds.

A hairdryer isn't the only quick source of directable heat you can use to clean.

Karina Toner of Spekless Cleaning says, "Use a clothes iron and a few paper towels to melt and absorb the wax. Place a clean, dry cloth over the wax stain. Set a clothes iron to a low heat setting and gently press it over the cloth. The heat will melt the wax, which will be absorbed by the cloth. Repeat with a fresh cloth until the wax is completely removed."

If your irony is looking a bit dirty and crusty, first clean your iron before setting to work on the wax stain.

Method 2: Freezing locally

Much like the old wives tales of sticking candle wax-covered items in the freezer to make removal easier, you can still freeze the wax on a couch or big upholstered item — you just do it smartly, locally.

Karina says, "To make the candle wax brittle and easier to scrape off, place a bag of ice or a freezer pack over the wax stain. Once the wax is frozen, use a blunt object like a butter knife to gently scrape off the wax. Vacuum or brush away any remaining residue."

Sounds easy enough, right? Amy adds if the spill is fresh, hold your ice bag or pack on the wax for 5-10 minutes before scraping off. A spoon is Amy's recommended blunt object.

If you don't have any in the house, try your local Walmart for Zip-Close Freezer Bags. 

Method 3: Baking soda

Ah, good old baking soda, the natural stuff that works for so many brilliant cleaning hacks, including cleaning a carpet.

Amy says, "Put baking soda on the wax, then spray WD-40 [a penetrating oil industrial lubricant] on it. Let it sit for a few hours, then scrape the wax off with a spoon. You can even use peanut butter as an alternative, but be mindful that this could stain as well, so it depends on your upholstery."

Method 4: Home-made paste

Another gloriously quick and easy way to remove candle wax stains or spills from upholstery is to mix baking soda, dish soap (we recommend classic Dawn Dish soap, available on Amazon), and vinegar into a paste, spread it on the stain for 15 minutes, then scrub clean.

If you've used a soft cloth to scrub, learn how to wash microfiber clothes without ruining their absorbency.

Method 5: Acetone

Usually reserved for removing nail polish, acetone can be a nifty chemical to use elsewhere for stubborn, sticky stains. 

However, heed our warning that acetone can strip color from upholstery, and fabrics, and dissolve acetate linings on items. If you want to use this method, we suggest a patch test on an inconspicuous area of your item first.

Although the method below sees you applying acetone to the candle wax, the harsh chemical is a liquid and may well run down to other parts of your upholstery so proceed with caution. I have personally seen acetone strip paint off my vanity dresser, and bleach the front of a perfectly good pair of black jeans.

To use this method, Amy says, "Apply nail polish remover or acetone to the wax stain. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes, then carefully scrape off the wax with a dull knife, spoon, or plastic card."

Velvet upholstery requires extra caution as it can be delicate and prone to damage. Avoid using heat or excessive pressure when removing wax to prevent crushing or flattening the velvet fibers. With velvet, it would be advisable to opt for the freezing method instead and gently scrape off the wax with a soft brush or cloth rather than applying acetone to this material.

Method 6: Oil

Amy says, "You can blot up fresh candle wax with olive or baby oil, but don't use any heat afterward as it can damage upholstery. Just remove any remaining oil and vacuum thoroughly."

Once you've removed the candle wax, you may encounter some secondary snags.

Amy says, "Candle wax isn't the only problem. It also leaves behind oil and dye, making stain removal on upholstery a little trickier. Depending on the color of the wax, you may need to tackle the stain differently."

For dark or bright-colored wax on light upholstery Amy recommends using an oxygen bleach product such as OxiClean, available on Amazon, to help remove the dye or contact your local drycleaners for options, such as steam cleaning.

Karina adds, "If you’d prefer to purchase a ready-made solution, or if these homemade remedies just aren't cutting it, you can also use Goo Gone Adhesive Remover, from Amazon. It’s highly effective at removing tough adhesive residue, including candle wax, from upholstery without damaging the fabric. 

"Its powerful formula breaks down the wax, making it easy to wipe away. It comes in a convenient spray bottle, making it easy to apply directly to the affected area. Simply spray, wait a few moments for the formula to penetrate the wax, and then wipe away with a clean cloth. It's quick and straightforward, requiring minimal effort to achieve great results."

Karina recommends always testing any cleaning method or product on a small, inconspicuous area of the upholstery first to ensure it doesn't cause damage. Blot, don't rub, when removing wax to avoid spreading the stain or damaging the fabric. After removing wax, follow up with a gentle upholstery cleaner to remove any remaining residue and restore the fabric's appearance.

Air fresheners can pose real dangers not only to humans but also to your fur family, too. We spoke with veterinarians and physicians to find out the risks, what you need to do in case of exposure.

 Are air fresheners toxic to kids and adults?  

Dr. Kevin Huffman, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and CEO & Founder of AmBari Nutrition, explains that certain home fragrances may pose risks to both children and adults. 

“Some air fresheners contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as formaldehyde, benzene, and acetaldehyde, which have been linked to respiratory symptoms such as coughs, wheezing, and asthma attacks, especially in children with sensitive airways,” he says. “Some fragrances use phthalates, endocrine disruptors that may interfere with hormonal function.”

Kevin notes that aerosol air fresheners and plug-in diffusers, which are constantly dosed, pose the greatest risk. Additionally, gel beads and diffuser sticks can cause harm if they’re accidentally ingested by children. 

“Symptoms of air freshener ingestion include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, coughing, and difficulty breathing. Severe cases can include aspiration pneumonia,” he says. If your child has ingested air freshener material, then it’s important to seek medical attention right away. 

“Some research has found a connection between long-term exposure to VOCs and the risk of respiratory problems and allergies, and even certain cancers,” says Kevin. 

However, the exact long-term health effects of using air fresheners aren’t yet known. 

Can you safely use air fresheners around kids and adults?

You can maximize your family’s safety by carefully choosing your air fresheners. “Consider air fresheners that are labeled ‘fragrance-free’ or ‘natural essential oils’ – these tend to be less irritating and are less likely to have adverse effects,” says Kevin. “Essential oils can also be irritating at high concentrations, so be careful about their use, especially around children and pets.”

He recommends that you carefully read the air freshener labels and avoid using products that contain harsh chemicals or artificial fragrances. If you want to add scent to your environment, use a natural option like diffusing diluted essential oils in a reed diffuser or open your windows and let in fresh air. 

“The healthiest way to have a fresh-smelling home is to ensure that it’s well-ventilated and clean,” he says.

Are air fresheners toxic to pets?

Air fresheners are even more dangerous for your pets. Dr. Jamie Clanin, a veterinary advisor at PetLab Co., explains that air fresheners can be highly toxic to pets. 

“The most toxic ingredients are the same ones that help the scent move through the air,” she says. “These are known as volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, and can cause anything from irritation of the eyes and airway to organ damage or even cancer.” 

Dr. Paola Cuevas, veterinary consultant at Catster, notes that though an air freshener may be marketed as natural, it can still pose a risk to your pet’s health.

“Many so-called “natural fresheners” contain essential oils, which are highly toxic to pets, since they do not have the necessary enzymes to process them,” she explains. “Cats are even more sensitive than dogs, but both are vulnerable.”

Paola explains that pets can be harmed by ingesting air freshener contents, absorbing the oils through their skin, and even by inhaling the VOCs simply by being in the house. “The extent of the damage depends on factors such as your pet's health, size, the specific components and organic compounds in the product, and the exposure amounts,” she says. 

Jamie notes that while VOCs are present in spray bottle fresheners, aerosol air fresheners may contain even higher levels of VOCs. Since many essential oils are toxic to pets, even essential oil diffusers and scented candles can be harmful. 

Additionally, plug-in air fresheners are usually placed in outlets that are near the ground, so they’re very easy for pets to reach. 

According to Jamie, in addition to potential air freshener toxicity, pets can also have an allergic reaction to air fresheners or scented products. “Just like humans, pets can be allergic to just about anything,” she says. “Even worse, they are much more sensitive to smell than we are. So, a light, pleasant scent to us could be highly irritating or even nauseating to them.” 

If your pet is experiencing toxicity from an air freshener, you might notice mild symptoms like itchy, watery eyes, a runny nose, and a sore throat. Removing the air freshener and airing out the house usually relieves these mild symptoms. 

However, severe toxicity symptoms can include coughing, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, and not eating. “You will need to see appropriate care from a veterinarian,” says Jamie. “[Treatment] might include emptying your pet’s stomach, hospitalization for dehydration or organ damage, or long-term medications to treat things like asthma that can’t be cured.”

Can you have pets and air fresheners in the same home?

While certain air fresheners are safer for humans, no air freshener is completely safe for pets. “The best things you can do to keep your home fresh and safe for your pet are to use air purifiers and change your air filters regularly,” says Clanin.

But you know, having kids and having so much awareness in what's good and bad for us — whether it's environmental or what we're putting in our bodies — you can control what you have in your house, so that's really important. 

I think that just having a truly natural product is something that makes us different than other people in this space. It's really hard to accomplish — there are so many regulations and guidelines when you're dealing with scents. It's very limiting, but the people we have working on it are just incredible and can do wonders, but it's a time-consuming process. 

What makes Below 60° ideal for those of us in smaller homes?

I think the device works much better in a smaller space. It can also work great in a large space, you just have to have multiple devices plugged in to really get the effect, but it's really about what [fragrance] you desire, you know? 

When I travel and I'm in a hotel room that's smaller than my home, I always bring it because it warms up the space and makes it more personal. It's like "Oh, I'm definitely not home right now, but a touch of me is here."

What is your go-to fragrance when you travel?

Well, the one I always hate on is Vanilla Buys a Timeshare in Paradise, but it's actually my favorite when I travel. My favorite in my home is If Citrus Were a Feeling, but once I was in New York and staying at this really cute boutique hotel, I just popped in Vanilla Buys a Timeshare in Paradise, and I was obsessed with it. I feel like if you like vanilla, it's is a comforting, homey scent and that's what I was looking for when I'm traveling.

How would you say Below 60° changes the atmosphere of homes? 

For me, it's all about the senses. That's about not having the lights just blasting, it's about [things] being just right. You start to pour a glass of wine, cook something, open a window — I think the home is just very personal and you have to make it your sanctuary. Our world is so crazy and it's a nice way to also express a part of your personality. 

What do each of the scents mean to you?

The first one we started was Mint Disco on Ice. It's kind of like a minty fresh, icy uplifting scent. I think it's geared a little more toward men, because they don't typically go towards floral things. But I love it, it's a really nice, clean fragrance.

And then we created If Citrus Were a Feeling, which is very bright and I feel like works anywhere in the home. I love to have it in my entryway, but I probably wouldn't have it in my bedroom.

And the other one is Vanilla Buys a Timeshare in Paradise, which I had a lot of fun with the name because vanilla to me is very summertime, but it's one of the favorites so it's got some coconut, and it does feel very island-y. But it's also warm at the same time, and it's definitely a fan-favorite and it takes you somewhere.

What are you hoping to achieve overall with Below 60°?

Oh my gosh, I think I would like to expand people's knowledge on using truly natural fragrances and how they can be effective and they can work in your house, and you don't have to deal with artificial scents, but it's a process to crack the code on it. 

And also, of course, we want to expand. I want to make candles and one of the bigger interests in my life having three — almost four — kids now is the smell of my cars. There's always food and snacks going around, and strawberries under the seats. So definitely some sort of a device. And, you know, just help people reach their goal of incorporating more healthy choices in their lives. 

As far as the scents that are coming down the pipeline? Hilary tells us she's really pushing for Palo Santo, and she found a hyacinth-inspired aroma that's clean and refreshing. For those who like to stay in tune with the time of year, you can look forward to seasonal fragrances, particularly in the fall. Ready to get started? “One of the best feelings, truly ever, is having someone walk into your home and say it smells amazing,” says Jen Reed, influencer, shopping expert, and founder of @TheSisterStudioIG and Life in Lilac. “That's my goal anytime I have people over!”

1. Layer up scents

Don’t be afraid to mix and match different scents. “I love having a couple of different candles burning at once,” says Reed. “It lets the scents really play off of one another, feels extra-inviting, and creates such a luxe scent.” If you aren’t sure where to start, try lighting two of your favorite seasonal candles, and see how they smell when lit together. 

2. Incorporate diffusers

She also adds that people with nice-smelling homes scrub down their sink with dishwashing liquid or another cleaning solution at least once a week, to eradicate any food particles that can smell.

Lavender is one of my favorite scents, because of its calming effects. “Strategically placing small satchels of lavender in certain areas of the home can add a light scent without overpowering you or your guests,” Carmona tells me. Placing them under pillows in each bedroom, on a dresser or nightstand, or in a decorative bowl in your kitchen will do the trick.

8. Take out the trash and recycling every week

Yes I know — it’s a lot of effort to take out the trash. It is key for removing any lingering odors, though. “Make a concerted effort to take out the trash and recycling every week,” says Giaquinto. “Old food that is thrown away in the trash can keep going bad and really stink, so it is so important to throw out your trash whenever it gets full.” This doesn’t just go for your kitchen trash can — this goes for your bedroom and bathroom, too.

9. Hang eucalyptus in the bathroom

This sounds a little bit random, but it’s actually a totally genius idea. “Hanging fresh eucalyptus in bathroom showers will not only provide a relaxing experience while one showers, but in small spaces, the fragrant scent will carry to other rooms,” says Carmona. How to make your own air freshener

Step 1: Mix the water and rubbing alcohol together

First things first, mix the vodka/rubbing alcohol and distilled water together in a ratio of 1:4 (this is approximate, it doesn't matter if it's not exact).

Step 2: Add essential oil

Next, add about 10 drops of your chosen essential oil or essential oil blend to the distilled water and rubbing alcohol/vodka. 

Step 3: Decant into a spray bottle

1. Create a simmer pot

4. Add potpourri

One simple way to create a welcoming and cozy home is by making sure it smells nice. There’s just something that’s so comforting about walking through your front door to be greeted by your home’s signature scent. It provides a specific ambiance that can provoke feelings of relaxation and safety, and it’s a nice way to impress any guests.  

However, between day-to-day life, hosting festivities, and cooking meals in your space, the way things smell can get a bit musty. If you’re in need of a little scent upgrade, these natural ideas will not only help you set the mood but they’ll also keep everything smelling fresh over time.

1) DIY Room Spray

What’s the difference between a diffuser and a humidifier — and how do they work?

Right, so we’ve determined that they’re different, but how exactly? 

A humidifier (like this Pure Enrichment humidifier that's available at Amazon) is designed to add moisture to the air and can be used to help relieve issues like dry skin, coughs, and sore or scratchy throats caused by dry air. 

Whereas, a diffuser (like Neom ultrasonic diffuser from Amazon) mists essential oils into the air and can be used for aromatherapy or to scent your home. 

One of the main differences between diffusers and humidifiers is the size of their water tanks. So, while most diffusers can hold one cup of water (often less) most humidifiers can hold between ½ and one gallon of water. 

A diffuser doesn’t require the same amount of water as a humidifier as its purpose isn’t to add moisture to the air (that’s what a humidifier does). Instead it simply disperses scent into the air. 

And, while you can safely add essential oils to diffusers, it’s not normally a good idea to add them to humidifiers. In fact, adding essential oils to a humidifier will not only (in most cases) void the warranty, but it may also damage the device as, over time, the essential oils can deteriorate the tank, filter and other internal components.

So, we’ve discovered that both humidifiers and diffusers come with their own pros and cons, but which is best for what?

If you’re looking for a system that will help to scent your home or aid relaxation, then an ultrasonic diffuser (that can be used in combination with your favorite essential oils is a great buy. 

Whereas, if you’re looking for a device that pumps out a lot of moisture (without the scent of essential oils) then a humidifier is probably the best bet. 

I personally have both devices at home and use both interchangeably, as well as at the same time, depending on what’s needed. 

If I’m feeling under the weather, with a cold or my skin feels dry, or I simply feel that the air feels a little dry, then I often opt to have my humidifier pumping out moisture into the air. 

Whereas, if I want to add a nice scent to my home or do a little aromatherapy, I tend to opt to turn on one (of my many) essential oil diffusers. 

Strap in, besties — let's talk home fragrance! As someone who is a bit of a scent obsessive, I really do know my stuff. But, that said, I also struggle to choose between candles and diffusers. Because, let's be honest, both options are pretty great.

Where to even begin about my favorite candles? I love the versatility they offer. They come in so many incredible shapes, sizes, and styles — not to mention, a hell of a lot of scents. There's no arguing with how a bougie candle can elevate your space, is there? For me, my top pick is my Aromaworks citrus candle from Amazon — it's like summer in a jar!

I'm also totally obsessed with diffusers too. I have both reed diffusers and essential oil diffusers dotted around my home. The former being great for continual scent (think a more natural air freshener) and the latter ideal for a strong burst of scent. I often throw mine on just before guests pop over for a great first impression.

Both candles and diffusers offer some really scent-sational (see what I did there) qualities, but out of the two which is best? 

What’s the difference between a diffuser and a candle? 

Obvi, we all know what a candle is — aka a little pot of wax with a cotton or wooden wick running through the center — and how it works. But, what about a diffuser? What are they and how do they work?

The first thing to know is that there are two types of diffusers — reed diffusers and essential oil diffusers, with both working differently. 

Reed diffusers, like this NEOM one from Amazon that I have at home, tend to feature a vessel that’s filled with fragrance oil (a combination of essential oil and a carrier solution) and has natural rattan reed sticks inserted into the liquid so that they can absorb the oil, allowing the scent to diffuse into the air. 

Whereas, essential oil diffusers, are usually battery-powered, rechargeable or plug into a power outlet and use a stream of heat to disperse essential oils into the air. Usually, they have a tank for water, where you can also add a few drops of your chosen essential oil, and when turned on, they turn the water (and oil) into steam, allowing it to diffuse around the room as it pumps from an opening at the top of the tank.

• Strong burst of scent that usually lasts until the candle burns out

Diffuser vs candle — which is best for what?

The great debate — candle or diffuser, which is best? The reality is that both candles and diffusers have their own pros and cons, so knowing which is best to add to your apartment can be a little tricky. 

Personally, I like to switch between both, dotting candles and diffusers (both reed diffusers and ultrasonic diffusers) throughout my home. Using them interchangeably, depending on the level of scent I'm hoping to achieve. 

While candles are great for offering a quick burst of scent that's strong and diffuses quickly, reed diffusers are better used in the place of air fresheners as they disperse scent in a similar way. Whereas, electronic (or battery-powered) diffusers also work well to quickly disperse the scent throughout your home, using steam.

One added bonus of these diffusers is the fact that you can customize the level of scent (determined by the amount of essential oil added to the water) and the actual scent itself (by mixing different oils to achieve your desired fragrance). 

If you're a pet parent like I am, you may worry about the safety of having a naked flame around your pets, which can make candles a less convenient option. However, instead of lighting your candles, you could opt to use a candle warmer to melt the wax and disperse the scent in a safer, flame-free way.

It’s easy to assume that all you’ve gotta do is pick a pretty, nice-smelling candle and you’re good to go, right? Wrong. Candles actually need a little care and adequate maintenance, if you’re going to get the most out of them, that is. Believe it or not, there’s a right way and a wrong way to use and take care of your candles. 

I mean, you’d think that all you’ve gotta do to get the most out of your candles is to burn them and enjoy the scent, right? And yet, that isn’t the case. To get the very best out of your candles they need to be properly looked after and carefully cared for. 

How do I know this? Well, as someone who makes and sells homemade candles, I’ve learned a hell of a lot about candle maintenance and care. I even bought a book about it. Yep, seriously! And honestly, if you give your candles a little TLC they’ll not only last longer, but they’ll burn better and — believe it or not — they’ll smell better too.

How to take better care of your candles

Ensure an even burn

The first rule of candle care is to make sure that your candles burn evenly so that you’re not left with a tunneled candle. Before we go into how to prevent candle tunneling, let’s look at what causes it in the first place. There are two main causes of tunneling — placing your candle near a draft and not letting it burn for long enough the first time it’s lit. 

You need to let it burn long enough for the entire surface of the candle to melt before you blow it out. You see, if you don’t allow the entire top surface to melt, you may end up with a candle that tunnels and leaves a wax ring around the top of the jar that never ends up melting. So, if you’re short of time, don’t be tempted to light a new candle. 

Helpful hint: If your candle has already tunneled, you can fix it by wrapping the candle in a piece of aluminum foil and lighting the wick as normal, allowing it to burn until all the built-up wax melts.

Keep candles clean

Once you’ve burnt a candle once or twice, you might notice that soot and loose pieces of candle wick start to appear on the top of the candle. This kind of debris can end up causing the entire top of the candle to ignite, instead of just the wick. But, by keeping candles clean and removing debris from them, you can reduce the chances of this happening to your candles and the wax or container being damaged as a result. To remove soot and other debris, use a clean piece of paper towel, and for wick trimmings use a pair of tweezers to remove them from the wax. 

Trim the wick

If you want to ensure that you always get a clean and even burn, it’s vital that you keep candle wicks trimmed to the correct length. It might sound kinda strange but the length of your candle wicks impacts the burn. So, before lighting a candle, check that the wick is below 0.25 inches (the recommended ideal burn length) — if it’s longer than this, trim the wick using a pair of sharp scissors or a wick trimmer, like my favorite matte black wick trimmer from Amazon. 

Helpful hint: Make sure not to trim the wax too low, otherwise it may get drowned in wax as the candle heats up and the wax around it melts. 

Put your candle out carefully

When putting your candles out, make sure to do so carefully, otherwise hot wax may splatter everywhere. It’s fine to blow a candle out but it’s important to do it slowly, so as not to blow hot wax onto the wick and candle container. If the candle comes with a lid, it’s often easier to put the lid back on to put the candle out. Alternatively, if you have a snuffer you can use that to put your candle out. 

Don’t burn your candle too low

I know, I know, it’s tempting to want to burn every last drop of your candle’s wax, especially when it smells utterly divine — like this Molten Brown candle (available from Amazon) that I am totally obsessed with — but if you let the candle burn all the way down, the container may overheat and could even crack. So, it’s advisable to stop burning your candle when it has 0.5 inches of wax left in it. 

Handy hint: If you don’t like to waste the last of the wax, you can always scrape it out using a spoon, melt it down, and pour it into a wax melt mold to create your own DIY wax melts. That way, you’re not wasting any wax but you’re using your candles safely. 

Store your candles the right way

Unfortunately, over time your candles can begin to spoil — which means that they start to lose their scent and may also become a little discolored. And, FYI, if you store your candles in direct sunlight, this process is likely to occur far more quickly than you would imagine. The best place to store your candles is in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight. If your candles come with lids, make sure that you use them to preserve the wax and scent.  

Burn your candles for the right amount of time

It might sound kinda odd — surely you can burn your candles for however long you please — but candles actually do have right and wrong burn times. A super common candle care mistake is letting candles burn too quickly or for too long. It’s advisable to burn candles for around three to four hours at a time to prevent tunneling, ensure an even burn, and fill the room with scent. 

Make candles last for longer

While there are a number of hacks that you might have heard of for extending candle burn time — like sprinkling salt around the wick — your best bet for a longer burn time is to opt for candles that are designed to burn for longer. Natural candles made from beeswax, soy wax, and coconut wax have a much longer burn time than petroleum-based candles made from paraffin wax. So, for an extended burn time, opt for natural wax candles.

Before you invest in any luxe home fragrances, start by neutralizing odors in your space. We're talking the laundry room, bathtub, toilet, oven, and fridge. 

Make sure you're also regularly taking out the garbage, keeping an eye on your perishables in the fridge, and regularly cleaning your washing machine. 2. Consider your cleaning products

Once you've eliminated odors with a deep clean, it becomes a lot easier to maintain a fresh-smelling home. The cleaning products you clean with during your weekly sessions also make a big difference, so consider what kinds of scents you like and what you associate with that clean feeling.

Okay, confession time: I am somewhat crazy about the scent of my home and like to ensure that my space always smells as glorious as possible. I think the low-key obsession that I clearly have comes from being a pet parent and constantly worrying that I’ve gone “nose blind."

What’s the difference between a reed diffuser and an essential oil diffuser?

Let’s start by looking at the differences between the two. 

What is a reed diffuser?

Think of reed diffusers as being kinda like a more natural version of an air freshener. Sounds odd but, hear me out. Usually, reed diffusers — like this NEOM one from Amazon that I have at home — feature a vessel (normally a vase or a bottle) that’s filled with a fragrance oil (this is combination of essential oil and a carrier solution).  The other key feature are the natural rattan reed sticks that are inserted into the liquid and stick out the top of the bottle. The idea being that these reeds will absorb the fragrance oil from the bottom of the bottle, the oil will then travel up the reeds and the scent will diffuse into the air (similar to how an air freshener constantly diffuses scent into the air). 

What is an electric essential oil diffuser?

Whereas, electric essential oil diffusers — like this one from NEOM (also available at Amazon) that I am obsessed with — are either battery-powered or plugged into a power outlet and diffuse essential oils into the air with the use of steam or heat. Unlike reed diffusers, there are a few different types of electric essential oil diffusers. These are nebulizing diffusers, ultrasonic diffusers, evaporative diffusers, and heat diffusers, and each works differently but does the same thing. 

What are the pros and cons of reed diffusers?

Pros: 

• Low maintenance and easy to set up
• Don’t require electricity
• A constant stream of scent
• A great budget-friendly option

Reed diffuser vs electric essential oil diffuser: which is best for what?

As someone who has both in her home, I can tell you that reed diffusers and electric essential oil diffusers both have their advantages and disadvantages. 

For a constant refreshing (and somewhat more subtle) scent, reed diffusers — as long as they’re maintained and cared for properly — can work like a dream. 

Plus, reed diffusers don’t require access to an electrical outlet, so you can literally pop them anywhere. Personally, I like to put reed diffusers in my bathrooms, in my entryway, and dotted on shelves and windowsills throughout the house. 

Whereas, an essential oil diffuser needs to be positioned near a power outlet (unless it’s battery operated), which means that they’re perhaps not as versatile as a reed diffuser. 

But, what these electrical diffusers can offer is a boost of scent at the times that you feel your home needs it most. For instance, I usually pop on my diffusers when I have guests coming over, if I need to relax, or just if I feel my home is in need of a little refresh. 

Move aside #TeamEdward and #TeamJacob, it's time to discuss an even hotter debate: are you Team Candle, or Team Wax Melt? 

When it comes to making your home smell amazing, it feels like there are endless options in home fragrance, and deciding which method is best for your space can feel like a serious struggle. 

So if you're finding yourself overwhelmed standing in TJ Maxx trying to decide between a scented candle or a wax melt, you're not alone. This is the definitive guide to the difference between candles and wax melts, each of their pros and cons, and everything you need to know before you shop for your next home scent.

Candles vs wax melts

Candles go without introduction. These vessels filled with scented beeswax, soy, or coconut wax come in a variety of shapes, sizes, scents, and colors to suit any and every aesthetic. Ranging from tealights to mega 3-wick candles, burn time can range anywhere from a 3-4 hours to upwards of 100.

Wax melts, on the other hand, are little shaped pieces of wax made with a more concentrated scent. When paired with a wax warmer that you plug into your wall, they're used as a flame-free alternative to candles to fill a room with fragrance. A high-quality wax melt can last you about 8 hours, with some claiming to run from noon til midnight at 12 hours a piece.

Pros and cons of candles

Pros: Candles have been around since the olden days, and there's a pretty solid reason for that: The. Vibes. Are. Immaculate. Nothing quite compares to the romantic feel of a candlelit dinner or is more relaxing than a candle paired with a bubble bath, and watching that flickering flame can also do wonders for your focus, concentration, and mindfulness when it comes to meditating and setting affirmations. 

The other big win with candles is their decorative impact. Whether you opt for a funky abstract twisted candle or one shaped like a Roman bust or female form, you're able to bring some major cuteness to your space. The vessels themselves can also vary wildly in shape and color from plain matte black to dreamy iridescent, and some candle's sculptural containers look like actual pieces of art.

They're also available at a range of price points, and you'll find a lot of high-end designers and fragrance houses make candle versions of your favorite perfumes, which means you can bring some luxury into your space and take that signature scent even more seriously (we're looking at you, Maison Margiela).

Cons: Realistically, the biggest cons of candles are caused by the open flame itself and potential safety issues it could cause. In dorms and rented apartments especially, you likely have a clause in your contract specifically saying that candles aren't allowed, and that's because there's a serious fire risk if you forget to blow a candle out and leave it unattended or burning for too long.

Every candle also comes in a vessel, and while many of those are adorable, some are more about function. Unfortunately, burning a bunch of candles at home leads to throwing away glass containers and the consumption of lighters and matches — which is not exactly ideal for sustainability.

Pros and cons of wax melts

Pros: One of the biggest plus sides of these little scented squares is the fact you can fill your home with fragrance, without the use of a flame. This is beyond ideal for renters, dorm dwellers, and anyone living in a space with a strict 'no candles' rule who misses the cozy feeling of their favorite scent surrounding them at home.

For our aspiring perfume professionals, wax melts also give a lot of room to get creative. You can mix and match different scents to create your own custom home fragrance that makes you feel most comforted, and that you'll always associate with that feeling of sanctuary.

Cons: TBH, the ambiance of a wax melt doesn't hold a flame (ha) to traditional candles. While you do still get a light source and an element of decoration through the wax warmer, in most instances, the vibe is more like a bedside lamp than a moody or romantic flicker. 

At first glance, an individual pack of wax melts may also seem more affordable than many candles, but don't forget that they rely on a plugin lamp, meaning you need to use electricity to get the scent. While candles also have their drawbacks when it comes to potential waste and environmental impact, it is important to keep in mind that filling your living room with fragrance all day could cost you some serious coin.

Personally? I'm obsessed with candles and they serve as my main form of home decor, so they're definitely my preference over wax melts. But I had to know if this was a hot take or I was with the majority on this one, so I took it to the team to see where everyone stands on the candles vs wax melts debate:

So clearly, the verdict here at Real Homes is a resounding #TeamCandle, but if you're still feeling indecisive about where you stand, I totally get it and am here to give a few more home scent ideas.

"You can actually make a wax melt from scratch or using leftover candle wax," Collyer says. "When I am at the bottom of a candle, I wait for it to cool down and take it into my kitchen. I boil my kettle and pour the hot water into the vessel, leaving it for around an hour. You should find that a disc of wax has floated to the top of your jar, and most of the time this should slide out into your hand. I break this up and use it as wax melts so it doesn't go to waste."

While I am low-key obsessed with my essential oil diffusers, I also love, love, love using a reed diffuser. I like to make sure that there’s at least one in every room in my home.

For keeping each space smelling fresh, without the need for scented candles or fake-smelling air fresheners, these are my go-to. Compared to scented candles, what I love about reed diffusers is how they continuously diffuse aroma into the air, without the need for an open flame. 

That said, I have a confession. I actually used to be rather anti reed diffusers, simply because mine always seems to lose their scent quickly and didn’t seem to work to effectively diffuse scent throughout the space. However, once I learned how to use reed diffusers properly, I realized I wasn’t getting the results I wanted because I hadn’t been using them properly.

How to use a reed diffuser

Step 1: Put paper towels under the diffuser vessel 

Before you set up your diffuser, it’s a good idea to pop some paper towels underneath the vase or pot, so that you’re covered in case any of the fragrance oil gets spilt. Because — and I speak from experience here — it can be rather challenging attempting to pour your chosen oil into such a teeny tiny hole. 

Oh and, FYI, it’s probably best to avoid setting your reed diffuser up on a wooden or material surface, as any spilt oil can leave stains that are rather tricky — if not impossible — to remove. Sigh. 

Step 2: Pour the fragrance oil into the diffuser 

The next step is to pour the fragrance oil into the vessel. Ideally, you want to fill the vessel up to between half and three quarters full. Don’t make the mistake of filling the vessel to the very top with the fragrance oil, otherwise it may end up overflowing when the reeds are added. If your diffuser comes with oil already inside it, you can skip this step. Instead, all you need to do is remove the cork from the vessel to access the pre-filled fragrance oil. 

Step 3: Place your reeds inside the diffuser 

Then, you need to add the reed sticks to the vessel. The best way to do this is to add the reeds, immersing the bottom of the sticks into the fragrance oil, allowing the reeds to more easily soak up the oil. When choosing how many reeds to add to the vessel, remember that the more reeds you add, the stronger the scent will be.

Step 4: Flip the reeds 

Give the reeds a couple of hours to absorb some of the fragrance oil and then remove them from the vessel and flip them over, so the dry end of the stick ends up in the vessel and the saturated end is positioned in the air. 

Step 5: Spread the reeds 

Make sure that the reeds are well positioned (not stuck together) within the vessel and allow up to 24-hours for the fragrance to be fully absorbed and to begin to properly diffuse around the room. "Make sure you place it in the center of your room for maximum fragrance throw," claims our home fragrance expert Annie.

Okay, confession: I own far too many essential oil diffusers for one person (or one house), and I am a teeny tiny bit obsessed. But, I mean, honestly can you ever really have too many essential oil diffusers? I don’t think so.

How to use an essential oil diffuser

Step 1: Plug in your essential oil diffuser  

Start by finding a good spot for your diffuser — ideally somewhere that it won’t get knocked over — and close to a power outlet. Once you’ve found the right spot, plug in your diffuser so that it’s ready to use. 

Step 2: Remove the case 

Carefully remove the outer case of the diffuser — if you’re unsure of how to do this refer to the instructions. Once you’ve removed the outer case, you should be able to easily lift off the inner lid, revealing the water tank. 

Step 3: Fill the tank with water 

Using an easy-pour jug, carefully fill the tank with water, making sure to fill the tank to above the minimum fill line but below the maximum fill line. If any water is spilled on or around the base, ensure that you quickly wipe it up. 

Step 4: Add essential oil

Once the tank has been filled with water, add a few drops of essential oil of your choice to the water. When it comes to picking essential oils, I'm a big fan of the Neom range of oils — like this Scent to De-Stress one from Amazon that I use day in, day out. 

Pro tip: Always check the device’s care instructions in relation to how much oil to add to it — while some diffusers say one or two drops, others allow for a more liberal amount of oil to be added. 

Step 5: Replace the case 

Once you’ve filled the tank with water, you can then replace the internal lid, before reattaching the outer case to the base of the diffuser.

Finally, you can use the on button or a remote control (depending on what your diffuser has) to turn it on.

What to consider when choosing a candle

When shopping for a candle, here are five things to consider:

• Burn time — compare this with the size of your candle and the price to make sure you're getting your money's worth.
• Size — choose this based on how large your room is, and go for more than one wick if you can.
• Notes — what does it mostly smell like? does this fit the current season we're in? Avoid any heavy notes (fruity, woody, spicy) in smaller spaces or windowless rooms.
• Wax— soy is better for your health, but it is more expensive and it's harder to clean from a jar afterward. Paraffin is an affordable choice and still burns well.
• Shape — Generally speaking, there are five types of candles to choose from. Tea lights are small enough to dot around the house and are often housed in thin metal containers. These can either be lit or melted using a candle warmer. Votives are a little taller and are great for small spaces. Filled candles are the most popular with wax poured into glass or terracotta vessels. Pillar candles can be used to create height. Some come in containers, and others are OK to light without one. And, tapered candles and thin and long. Typically, these fit in candle holders and are placed on a dining table or a mantelpiece for added light or to create intimacy.

How we test candles

Here's what we look for when testing candles:

• By scent — how fitting is it for the current time of year?
• By throw performance — does its fragrance spread itself around a room?
• By design — what does its vessel look like on display? 
• By burn — does it burn clean and is it soot-free?
• By price — is it affordable? Can you realistically afford to replace it once it's empty?

Though reed diffusers aren't necessarily dangerous, do place them out of reach of children or pets to avoid spills on your furniture, and reduce the risk of ingestion.

Essential oil diffusers
Essential oil diffusers produce water-fragranced vapor into the air. We've only included one diffuser in this guide, and it works without water. How to choose a home fragrance

Fragrance is very subjective, but it's one of the things that people with nice-smelling homes do take pride in and often feel particular about.. Just choose what you love the smell of. If you're still unsure of how to make your home smell good, there are a few general rules to help you make the best choice for you.

Living rooms: The living room is usually the largest room in the house and can tolerate a strong fragrance. Bold florals, rich amber-based, or woody-smoky fragrances, and sweet scents can all travel beautifully in this space. We'd avoid anything herbal or overly subtle, as you probably won't be able to smell it much.

Bedrooms: Choosing a scent for a bedroom is all about making sure you won't disrupt your sleep with an overly strong or stimulating fragrance. Avoid citruses or cloyingly sweet scents. Finding the right home fragrance for you may take a little trial and error. Are you more of a candle person or do you like a subtle air freshener? Think about your surroundings — you'll need to keep flames away from little ones and pets so candles may not be the best solution. If you're prone to knocking over a glass reed diffuser, maybe a plug-in air freshener would be a better option.

If, like me, you've seen every episode on KUWTK, you'll know that the Kardashian (and Jenner) family have some serious interior style. Given the siblings' wealth, I can only dream of having, in the words of Kourtney Kardashian, "that effortless look, you know?"

I have been testing home fragrances for years in my two-bedroom apartment and I always move them from room to room, and like to use them until they are half empty before making my mind up. Reed diffusers are also one of the things people with nice-smelling homes always use (including me!).

A couple of reed diffusers in this guide have been recommended by members of the Real Homes team. I warned my colleagues not to place the reed diffuser next to a heat source such as a radiator or a heater, as this can cause the oil to evaporate quicker than normal. But otherwise, I made sure that the process of how we test was as standardized as possible. For reed diffusers, this included:

• Fragrance intensity and longevity: This is how strong the fragrance is and how long it lasts. This is important as a reed diffuser needs to maintain a consistent fragrance level over time.
• Evaporation rate: This is the rate the oil evaporates through the reeds. If this is too fast, this can cause the diffuser to run out of scent prematurely, while if this is too slow, it can result in a weak fragrance.
• Reed quality: The quality of the reeds included is super important, as this is how the product absorbs and diffusers the fragrance. The ones made from high-quality materials ensure a steady and consistent release of fragrance.
• Scent throw: The distance over which the fragrance is noticeable is key for ensuring if a reed diffuser is doing its job and filling a room with scent. This is why we move diffusers around different rooms when testing.
• Price: We've looked at how good value for money the reed diffuser is for money, looking at the cost versus its performance.

What to consider when choosing a reed diffuser

1. Is it refillable?
With candles, once they’re gone — they’re gone. Not so with reed diffusers, which can be topped up with new fragrance oil. When you buy a diffuser refill, discard old reeds — they’ll be saturated with the scent from the first oil — and use new ones.

When refilling, you don't need to pour all the oil into the vessel. Instead, fill it to about two-thirds or three-quarters full. This allows for proper absorption by the reeds. Adding too much oil can oversaturate the reeds, leading to a strong smell that may be overpowering. Thicker reeds can absorb and release more fragrance, leading to stronger smell. However, the effectiveness of this can depend on the shape and size of the room.

The lifespan of your reed diffuser will vary based on factors such as the size of the bottle and the amount of oil used. Normally, an average reed diffuser can last anywhere from several weeks to a few months. However, factors like room temperature, ventilation, and the number of reeds can influence how quickly the oil evaporates.

2. Think about scents you normally like
Florals are fairly self-explanatory, though some of them get a bad rap for being too strong. Consider something from the woody or spicy families, or on the other end of the spectrum, a fresher, "greener" scent. Alternatively, if you're feeling stressed or anxious, you may benefit from picking an aromatherapeutic reed diffuser. Scents containing sage and rosemary can offer focus and clarity when dotted around the home, and lavender is known to be particularly calming if you're having trouble relaxing or sleeping. On the contrary, zingy citrusy scents can be energizing if you need a little pick-me-up. Peppermint has a similar uplifting effect.

3. Check its size
The larger the diffuser — the longer it will last. And don't forget, the more reeds in the fragrance, the quicker it will empty. Plus, the more often you flip the reeds the quicker the fragrance will need to be refilled or replaced, too. It's worth bearing this in mind when looking at the price of a reed diffuser — when will you next need to pay to refill or replace it?

4. Consider its design
Buy a reed diffuser that fits with your home decor, because it may have to be placed in the center of a room. Also, be sure to check if its vessel is recyclable after use, and if not, then you might want to ensure refills are available so you won't have to throw away the whole vessel. Most reed diffusers are eco-friendly as they are made using glass and bamboo wooden sticks.

5. Does it come as a candle or a room spray too?
If you like your home to smell the same throughout, check whether the reed diffuser you have picked comes as a candle, wax melt, air freshener, or room spray, too. This might appeal if you live in an open-plan or small apartment and don't want different scents to merge. However, some people call it scent layering!

1. Which type of air freshener do you want?
There are lots of air freshener types to choose from. Spray, aerosol, and solid are the most popular. Candles, reed diffusers, and essential oils differ slightly and aren't as powerful but can help make a home smell nice, too. 

2. How often will it need to be replaced?
Sprays and aerosols are different, as this will depend on how often you use them, but solid air fresheners and essential oil diffusers usually come with a lifespan. Keep this in mind when choosing so you're not overspending or over-replacing. 

3. Are you able to control it?
This one's a biggie! Because we've all been in a situation where someone is coming over and you or a roomie decided to microwave something pretty pungent. You'll need a plug-in you can turn on (or spray) to work instantly. So while air purifying bags, solid air fresheners, and fragrance spheres are great, they're more for background use. 

4. What does it smell like?
Don't go against the seasons. Much like you would with any other home fragrance, match it to the time of the year. Go floral in spring and warm in colder months. No one wants a cinnamon-scented entryway in the middle of July. But in December? I'd be all over that.

There's no one-size-fits-all when it comes to air fresheners. In fact, this will hugely depend on where you want to use your new air freshener, and whether you want something that you can control — or if you'd rather have an automatic air freshener.

• Spray air fresheners are great for use anywhere, especially on fabrics and upholstery. You can control how much scent they emit, and when they work. Opt for a mist for a lighter fragrance.

How to make homemade candles

First off, let’s talk wax. Paraffin wax is manmade and is quite a sooty burn. Ever burnt a candle and its left black residue on nearby objects, walls, ceilings, and around the candle jar? That’s paraffin. It’s made from petroleum.

Yep, the same stuff you put in your car’s fuel tank. Paraffin burns hotter and faster, meaning they don’t last as long, its fumes are actually toxic to humans and animals, with carcinogen compounds (cancer-causing agents) being thrown out into the air around you. 

They’re bad for the environment as they’re not renewable, do not biodegrade, and increase CO2 emissions. Paraffin candles tend to be bright and colorful and take just 24-48 hours to cure.

However, these DIY scented candles are eco-friendly and totally worth the effort (probably less effort than figuring out how to make wax melts). Just follow these simple steps:

1. Prep your chosen glasses

Fill your kitchen sink with water from the hot tap and place your glasses in to warm up. 

This stops the hot wax from being such a shock to the cold glass and prevents it from cracking. You can also place a metal spoon in the glass while you pour as this helps dispel the heat.

2. Measure out soy wax

Place your crackle wicks in a clip (grab in a kit on Amazon) and on the stickers and stick to the base of each glass. 

Use one of your glasses as a measuring cup and scoop out two full cups worth of soy wax you can buy in bulk on Amazon into a double burner or pyrex jug per candle you plan on making. 

For fragrance oil, you want a maximum of 10% of the overall weight of the candle to be fragrance. For a more subtle scent throw, I’d recommend just 6%. 

So, if you’re making 6 candles that will weigh 100g, you’ll need 94g of wax per candle and 6g will be fragrance. Don’t add it just yet though, but make sure you know how much your wax weighs before melting it.

3. Melt the wax

The ratios are different for essential oils so be sure to do your research on how much is needed and what temperature to add it. A useful guide can be found at Supplies for Candles.

Pop the jug of wax in the microwave or put a double boiler (pick one up at Amazon) on the stove with water in the bottom pan to heat up and melt the wax, stirring with a whisk to break up the wax.

4. Combine the soy wax and fragrance

Keep heating until the wax is fully melted and has reached 80 degrees Celsius. If you’re doing two different fragrances, decant evenly into pre-heated jugs and add your fragrance oil (I went for a very berry scent and one that smelled like a dupe of LUSH’s Snow Fairy – divine, but if that's not for you, take a look at these oils from Candle Shack) when the oil is still above 75 degrees. 

Keep stirring for 3-5 minutes as it cools so that the oils and the wax combine. If you don’t stir, they could separate and leave an oily coating on the top of the candle.

5. Pour wax into glasses 

Wait until the wax has cooled to 50 degrees Celsius and remove your glasses from the sink. Ensure the insides are dry and begin pouring. Again, leave the metal spoon in there to dispel the heat.

6. Set the candles aside to cure

Once you’ve filled all your candle jars, you’ll need to set them aside for 7 days to cure and the fragrance and the wax to merge and settle. 

You can add decorations like dried petals (look on Amazon for reasonable prices), but make sure to remove them before lighting the candle as they are flammable and can get blown out of the jar and onto a flammable surface – we don’t want that.

6. Make your candles gift-worthy

Once you’re ready to gift the candles or even keep them for yourself, trim the wick a couple of millimeters from the wax and ensure that each time it is lit, the candle is left to burn right up to the edge of the glass to prevent tunneling.

'The relaxing experience of lavender fragrance led to its deliberate, therapeutic use in aromatherapy to relieve mild anxiety when experts started using the scent. Lavender has been also used internally for mood imbalances such as anxiety, insomnia, and gastrointestinal distress, including “nervous stomach". 

'It's also a great oil to blend with other scents, we love blending it with Cedarwood for a great night's sleep and to ground us after a long day at work.'

Essential oil air freshener

As we become more conscious of the environmental impact of our purchases, some of us are steering away from synthetic fragrances and conventional aerosol air fresheners.

By purchasing pure essential oils, you can control what is in the air in your home – something you might be particularly wary of if you have a young or immunocompromised family.

There are a number of ways to distribute an air-freshening essential oil concoction around the home, which may come in handy if you've got an open-plan kitchen where smells can travel to other rooms. Known to support hair growth and increase thickness, adding a few drops of Rosemary to a carrier oil and massaging it directly into the scalp or skin will help promote hair growth in the areas required. Repeat twice weekly for best results.'

How to store essential oil recipes

'When blending essential oils, it’s important to be patient and allow your blend time to rest for a few days. This allows the essential oils to combine and the fragrance to develop,' says Sam Andrew, head of e-commerce and operations at Freshskin Beauty LTD.

'To store your blends you’ll need a few amber bottles. Amber glass helps to keep essential oils from deteriorating and protects their aromatic and therapeutic properties.'

From refurbished shoelaces to teeny tealights, pest repellents to skateboard lubricant, there are so many ways to use soy, bee, and paraffin wax in and around the home. 1. Create some DIY wax melts

When deciding what to do with leftover candle wax, wax tarts immediately spring to mind. If you don't know how to make DIY melts already, we've got the simplest 6-step tutorial to step-by-step images to guide you through the process.

Use them with a wax burner to gently fragrance the air with your favorite scent. If the scent from your scrap candle wax is a little weak, you can top up the top notes with a drop or two of essential oils. 2. Turn leftover wax into tealights

The best candles can burn for hours, but when they've been burnt down to the base – don't waste the residual wax. Instead use every last drop to make miniature versions of your favorite wicked waxes.

'Tealights are basically miniature candles in a shallow metal or plastic cup.' explains Teri Johnson, founder, Harlem Candle Company.

How to:

'All you need to make one is some leftover wax, an empty tealight cup, and a small tealight wick. The cups and wicks are very inexpensive and can be purchased from your local craft store or on Amazon,' says Johnson. 

'To make a tealight from leftover candle wax, just remove the wax from its jar and then melt it into the new tealight container.'

3. Mosquito repellents

You will need:

• Leftover candle wax
• Tealight containers
• Mosquito-repelling essential oils

If you're wondering how to get rid of mosquitoes in the home, there's usually an array of repellents available at retail stores and online. But, these usually come at a premium price.

Instead, you can ward away these pests by producing your own citronella-scented candles using surplus soy wax and Citronella oil (which you can buy from Gya Labs on Amazon).

Mosquitoes also hate lemon eucalyptus oil, as well as lavender, cinnamon, geranium,  thyme and tea tree. So you can also create an assortment of single-oil repellents or blend your own essential oil recipes to combine with the candle wax.

4. Transform wax into twisted candles

The twisted candle trend went viral on TikTok, so if you don't have budget to spend on Paddywax twist taper candles from Urban Outfitters - make your own.

If you've got some tall taper candles (like these from Amazon) left over from a formal dinner party, don't chuck them in the trash can. With a little hot water, and some careful molding, learning how to make twisted candles takes a matter of minutes. It's also a lot cheaper than the UO product and you're not restricted to green or gold colorways they have on site.

5. Fragranced drawer pouches

If you're finding holes in your lingerie and socks (that you haven't made) – you may have moths. But while moth balls can do the job to get rid of moths, they aren't very stylish (and contain toxic chemicals)

On the other hand, textile pouches filled with scented candle wax in your underwear and hosiery drawer are a chic alternative. Find pre-made bags online, or use off-cuts of your favorite fabrics (or get them for free at Neptune) to suit your scheme. While linen is a crisp option for contemporary bedrooms and dressing rooms, burlap works well for traditional or rustic rooms.

'Another way to relish your favorite candle fragrance is to turn the leftover wax into lovely fragrance pouches. These are great for adding pleasant scents to small spaces like closets, clothing drawers, or even inside your car.' says Johnson.

Alternatively, if you're looking for how to get rid of pantry moths, store these bags in your food cupboard to shoo these pests from your store cupboards. Just be sure that your foods are stored in air-tight containers so that they don't absorb the smell of the essential oils.

6. Sealing stationery with a wax seal

You will need:

• Leftover candle wax
• A wax seal stamp OR wine cork
• Teaspoon
• An old saucepan

How to:

1. Melt the remaining wax in your candle: Heat your leftover candle wax in an old saucepan and let it cool a little.
2. Pour a dollop onto your envelope: You may want to freehand pour this from saucepan to paper (especially if your pan has a spouted end). Alternatively, take a teaspoon's worth of melted wax and transfer it to the envelope. Whichever you decide to do, be very careful as hot wax can cause scalding burns.
3. Press the wax into your envelope:Before the wax has a chance to harden, press on it with a wax seal stamp for a few seconds, allowing the pattern to emboss into the liquid wax, then carefully lift your stamp to reveal the pattern or initial design.If you don't have a stamp handy, you can also use a wine cork or the back of a spoon to press the wax into your desired shape.

7. Scented fire starters

There's nothing like getting your best firepit going for relaxed summer entertaining and autumnal evenings. But there is a way you can really max out of this experience – fragranced firestarters.

These igniters act almost like an outdoor incense stick and firelighter, scenting the air around you with drops of spiced essential oil for a pleasant and uplifting experience.

'Like little candles, they burn long enough to turn stubborn firewood into a blazing inferno. Plus, they make the cutest gifts. Just stack a few together and give them to all your girlfriends.' says Stephanie Pollard at HelloNest.

You will need:

• Leftover candle wax
• A saucepan
• Cupcake or muffin cases (in the baking section on Amazon)
• A cupcake tray or muffin pan (keep things stable with this baking essential)
• Essential oils (optional) - this cinnamon oil from Amazon will keep the bugs at bay!
• Rosemary sprigs / foliage (optional)
• Kitchen paper (optional)

How to:

1. Melt your wax: In an old saucepan, re-melt your leftover candle wax and add a few drops of essential oils (if using).
2. Line your cupcake tray or muffin pan with cases: Depending on the size of your cases, you can make a lots of shallow fire starters or a few deep-filled ones. If using kitchen roll, tear small pieces and place them into the pastry cases. At this point, you can also fill your cases with cinnamon sticks, rosemary sprigs and cloves. These small paper towel and herb/spice extracts will give your fire starter a combustible boost! 
3. Pour the wax into pastry cases: Carefully transfer the hot wax from your pan and allow to cool. Once they've cooled down a bit, you can pop them in the fridge to speed up the hardening process. Top tip: If you can't get any cake cases – an old egg carton will do.

8. Wax-dipped outdoor pine cone fire starters

If you really can't source any cupcake cases, and your diet means you don't consume eggs (therefore you can't grab a carton), look to nature for vegan-friendly firestarters to add interest to your backyard bonfire.

These animal-friendly bonfire boosters were originally created by Kim Button, co-owner at Single Girls DIY blog, and we think they look super cute. We've adapted the tutorial slightly to swap out beeswax for soy wax to eliminate the use of animal-derived ingredients.

Though not necessary, the addition of an essential oil (or custom-blended essential oil recipe) will bring the smell of the holidays to your fire, no matter what month you're cozying around the pit.

Alternatively, bring them to a housewarming as a handmade present. Button says: 'Package them up in a basket, or wrap individually in cellophane, for a great gift.'

You will need:

• 8-10 pinecones (forage in the forest or get some from JOHOUSE store on Amazon)
• Leftover soy candle wax (equivalent to 6 cups)
• An old saucepan
• Candle dye (this assortment from Amazon has all the colors you'd need)
• Twine or string (rope some in from KINGLAKE's store on Amazon)
• Seasonally-scented essential oil (pine needle or orange oil can be found on Amazon)
• Parchment paper (these pre-cut sheets from Reynolds at Amazon are easy to use)
• Disposable aluminum bowls (these take-out trays from Amazon will also work well)

How to:

1. Tie some string around your pine cones: Take about one foot of your twine string and wrap it around a pine cone. Tie it at the top with a loop. Repeat this process for the rest of the pine cones.
2. Melt the wax: Melt the wax in a saucepan that you don’t mind getting waxy. 
3. Portion out the wax: Divide the wax into disposable aluminum bowls and add candle dye and essential oil of your choice. You'll need approximately six drops of essential oils per bowl.
4. Dip the pine cones in the wax: Using the knots as 'handles', immerse each pine cone individually into your colored wax mix and let dry between coats. Kim did two coats and that worked well for her.
5. Allow to dry: Line your waxed pine cones on a parchment paper and allow to dry.

9. Sealing shoelaces

What is it with kids and sneakers? If they've returned from the outdoors with muddy footwear – don't sweat, because we've got a whole guide on how to wash trainers. But, if the laces look a little worse for wear, there's no need to replace them. Similarly if your tennis shoes have taken a battering from the gym or the daily commute, here's a low-cost way to fix those frayed ends.

10. Make your own skateboarding wax

Do your kids consider themselves the next Tony Hawk? If you've allowed your tween  to own a skateboard, skate wax will stop their board sticking to concrete and metal. But unless you want them pestering you for pocket money, teach them how to make their own DIY lubricant (under adult supervision of course). 

You will need:

• A teaspoon of cooking oil
• Oven gloves (optional)

• Access to an oven
• Access to a freezer

How to:

1. Preheat your oven: Set your oven to 300-350F (150-180C) and allow it to heat up fully before making your skate wax.
2. Combine wax with cooking oil: Combine the cold wax with a teaspoon of neutral cooking oil in an oven-safe vessel. Almond, sunflower, grapeseed or canola work well, while olive oil can be a bit smelly, owing to its low(er) smoking point and green hue.
3. Pop your vessel in the oven: 10 minutes should do the job to melt your wax and distribute the oil. Top tip: Adding oil stops your skate wax from becoming brittle when you apply it to the board.
4. Remove from the oven and decant into molds
5. Transfer molds to freezer to chill: Allow your silicone molds to cool down for a while, before transferring them to the freezer. Your skate wax is ready when it has fully cooled which will take approximately two hours.

11. Make some crayons for the kids

Candle-making tends to be a hobby reserved for adults and bigger kids. But your pre-schooler shouldn't have to miss out on any fun! If an all-encompassing Crayola set on Amazon is a little too expensive - you can create an unlimited collection of colored crayons at home for them to play with.

If you're unsure whether your little one likes drawing with colored wax, this is a sure-fire way to try and see if they have an artistic streak - without spending bucks on a full set.

You will need:

• An old saucepan
• A crayons-shaped mold (we like the DLUCKY from silicone mold from Amazon)
• 2-3 disposable cups per crayon (Hefty Cups on Amazon cost a few cents per cup)
• Stirring sticks (these wooden ones from Amazon are good for popsicles too)
• Leftover wax (8-10 grams per crayon type)
• Pigment (Sargent Art colored chalk sticks on Amazon are a cheap idea that'll do)
• Measuring scales (the Etekcity kitchen scales on Amazon are a bestseller)

How to:

1. Decide how many colors you want: Stereotypically speaking, it's good to have some purples and pinks for girls and blues and greens for boys. But you can create a whole rainbow of colored crayon shades from brights to more muted pastel tones.
2. Measure out your pigment: Weigh out 2-3 grams of colored pigment per crayon type and decant into separate cups. If you want super vibrant results, measure out more chalk or food coloring.
3. Melt your wax in the saucepan: This should be done over a low heat, so that your leftover candle wax gently melts but does not boil. Although we've requested you use an old saucepan we don't want anything to burn! Once the wax has melted, reduce the heat.
4. Combine the wax and pigment: Carefully pour the wax into the cup that has the pigment in it and quickly stir it. Make sure to pop your saucepan back on your gas or electric hob, since the wax does quickly harden.
5. Pour into crayon-shaped molds: As soon as the wax has taken the color of the pigment, pour this mixture into the molds and let the wax mix harden for at least two hours.
6. Repeat the process to create other colors: Go wild with different single-colored wax pens or try making a double-ended crayon with two different shades. You could even add an essential oil to the colored wax mix to make your crayons smell nice but if your child is likely to chew on them and you're wondering 'are essential oils safe?' - it's better to go without.
