When is the best time to shop furniture deals?

Industry experts think late spring or summer are the best times to buy furniture. Prices can be lower due to stock rotation, and there are plenty of sales to shop including Memorial Day and July 4th. This is obviously a great time to buy outdoor furniture, but it isn't exclusive to patio furniture. Beds and other large indoor items are all up for grabs.

The other great time is November. Black Friday falls on the last Friday of the month, a term coined to denote the day after Thanksgiving when retailers cut prices for the biggest sale event of the year. We're seeing Black Friday furniture offers starting earlier than ever, with some going on at the beginning of November. The weekend of Black Friday sales is followed by Cyber Monday, which sees sales that run through to the start of December. 

Of course, it's good news for anyone struggling for space over Christmas and the New Year party season, as you can find great deals on extra seating, a sleeper sofa, or an extendable dining table before the rest of the holiday unfolds.

Once Black Friday is over, there is then a big push to clear stock around the New Year so check out the after Christmas sales, too.

Are Memorial Day furniture sales good?

Memorial Day is on the last Monday of May, and this year falls on May 27. The day commemorates those who have died in U.S. military service, and many use it as a time to visit cemeteries and memorials to pay their respects. For some, it has also now come to symbolize the unofficial start of summer, with many people taking time off on Memorial Day, to catch up with family and friends, with retailers offering seasonal discounts.

Although a time for getting the yard ready for summer, indoor furniture sees big discounts too as some stores clear space for outdoor stock. As it isn't considered prime time for getting cosy inside, you are likely to get some pretty good discounts on everything for couches to beds.

Dozens of top home retailers, including Apt2B, Burrow, and Castlery amongst others offer Memorial Day savings on everything from coffee tables to the best outdoor furniture, so it's a great time to take advantage of low prices.

Are Black Friday furniture deals worth it?

As mentioned before, Black Friday is a key furniture sale time. This is more because nearly every retailer has their biggest discounts now, rather than it being a key time for furniture. But, because of the seasonality, we do see some great offers on dining tables, beds and even outdoor furniture as retailers can't hold summer stock for much longer.

We don't think it is worth waiting for Black Friday if another sale event is round the corner though. As always, a good deal is only good if it is something you really want, so if you have your eyes on a gorgeous credenza for your hallway, or the Alaskan King bed you didn't think you ever afford, strike when you see one you love.

What I thought of the Mr. Coffee Mini Brew Coffee Maker

If you have limited space in your kitchen, the Mr. Coffee Mini Brew Coffee Maker is as compact as they come. It’s super lightweight — we’re talking just three pounds — and can easily be tucked into a corner. I can see it being a handy appliance for a small apartment or even a dorm room! 

Aside from its small form, this coffee maker is also incredibly easy to use. It has just one button — an on/off switch — and there are no complicated settings that you have to muck around with. While it’s undeniably basic, I was still impressed with the taste of the coffee. It was flavorful without being bitter, and it tasted just as good as the coffee that my regular drip filter coffee maker makes.

Unboxing and setting up the Mr. Coffee 5-cup mini brew coffee maker

The Mr. Coffee Mini Brew Coffee Maker arrived in a small box, so right away, I knew it was going to be a compact appliance. Still, I was a bit surprised at just how small the machine is — it’s maybe a quarter of the size of my usual drip coffee machine, which is admittedly a bit of a behemoth. The Mr. Coffee unit is also extremely lightweight, and I could easily carry it around with one hand. 

The machine comes with a cute glass carafe, and the rest of the appliance is made from black plastic. Overall, it’s a very basic, no-frills design, but that suits my needs just fine — I was more concerned about whether it would make good coffee. (Spoiler alert: It did!)

Using the Mr. Coffee 5-cup mini brew coffee maker

It’s very easy to use this coffee maker. I started by filling up the water tank, which is located at the back of the unit. 

Because the tank doesn’t come off the appliance, I had to carry water from the sink using a measuring cup, which was a little inconvenient. However, the good news is that I only needed about 25 ounces (a little over three cups) of water, so it didn’t take too many trips.

There’s a little window on the side of the machine that lets you see how much water you’ve put into the tank, so you know when to stop filling. 

From there, I loaded up the basket with coffee. The brew basket (which comes out for easy cleaning) is designed to be used with 4-6 cup basket-style filters (not included but available on Amazon), but I only had cone filters handy. Luckily, I was able to squish the bottom of the filter to fit into the coffee maker’s basket, and I then filled it with five scoops of my favorite ground coffee from Starbucks (available on Amazon).

Once that was done, all that was left to do was flip the power button! The little toggle-style button turns green to let you know it’s on, and the machine gets to work brewing coffee. It took around 5-6 minutes for the unit to brew a full carafe, and it did get quite noisy toward the end — the bubbling noise was so loud that my dogs were startled the first time and ran around the house barking. Oops!

The full carafe of coffee (roughly 25 ounces) was just the right amount for me and my partner in the morning. We were both able to have our usual 10-ounce cups, and I like how easy it is to pour out of the machine’s glass carafe. I take my coffee with half-and-half and sugar, and it tasted great — just like the coffee from my usual drip machine, which is notably more expensive than the Mr. Coffee model. The coffee maker does have a heating plate under the carafe to keep your coffee warm, but we never needed to use it, as we typically drank the whole pot. 

We continued to use the Mr. Coffee Mini Brew Coffee Maker each morning over the course of two weeks, and overall, its performance was consistent and the coffee was great!

Because this coffee maker is so basic, it’s a breeze to clean. After making a pot of coffee, all you have to do is throw away the filter and used grounds and wash out the carafe. Alternatively, use the spent coffee to clean your kitchen, or if you're lucky enough to have an outdoor space, use coffee grounds in your garden projects. 

That’s really all that’s required for daily maintenance — easy! The carafe and brew basket are also dishwasher-safe if you want a deeper clean, but I found it was easier to just wash them quickly by hand with a little dish soap and warm water. Whole Foods unscented detergent is under $3 on Amazon if you're worried about fragranced washing-up liquid tainting the taste of your coffee.

In terms of other maintenance, the brand recommends cleaning your coffee maker once a month, as it doesn’t have any type of filter to prevent mineral deposits from building up. To do this, it’s just a matter of running white vinegar (available on Amazon) through the machine and letting it sit for 30 minutes. After that, you can run clean water through the machine a few times to get rid of any lingering residue.

Our reviewer tried it out on fresh bacon, frozen hash browns, cookies, and even steaks, and found that it cooked all very well. Investing in a panini press can be a genius move over the holiday season. You can set up a panini station for the whole family to use up leftovers with all the toppings and condiments for a make-your-own sandwich buffet.

Bet you the first thing that springs to mind when thinking of a bean-to-cup coffee maker is something clunky with lots of bells and whistles, knobs, and a milk frother that you practically need a science degree for? Well, that's not the case with the Cuisinart DGB-2 Grind & Brew Coffee Maker.

The ability to switch between roasted cherries, pre-blitzed beans, or capsules is a game-changer and means that you can chop and change your coffee whenever you want. So much choice!

Naturally, grinding coffee is a noisy job, but it's expected with this appliance. And, if you use the eco-friendly reusable cup, it is a little hot (but so are disposable filter papers). Lastly, there isn't a warming plate, but the coffee dispensed is hot and delicious, so I can't imagine you'll need this feature, anyway. Personally, I just pre-fill my cup with boiling water from my faucet or kettle.

At just under $350 — it's spendy. But I've done the math, and it's basically the same as 69 Venti lattes from Starbucks. You'll definitely want to get your hands on a few microfiber towels and perhaps an antibacterial cleaning spray as this metal machine does mark easily. If you like milk-based drinks, this machine is probably not for you. That is unless you are OK with pouring cold milk into your drink or investing in a milk frother alongside your small coffee maker. I could see this one being used in your home office. It's compact, comes with all the eco-cred, and, if you do want a splash of milk... it's a great excuse to invest in a stylish mini fridge to sit underneath your desk. You can choose to dispense either a short or long shot of coffee — this is adjustable if you want it extra long. However, if you do want to top up a bulky mug you'll struggle to get it under the dispenser.

If you are particularly picky about your coffee but you’re struggling to find a large enough space in your kitchen for a full-sized coffee machine, this clever little portable espresso maker can be tucked neatly in a drawer until you’re ready to use it.

Weighing just 0.7 lbs, simply fill the base up with 2 oz of hot water, use the scoop to pop your favorite blend of ground coffee in its container, put it together, and pump until the pressure (8 bars of it!) starts pushing the water through the coffee — et voila, a creamy, luxurious espresso.

If you’re camping, you could heat this on the stove, but otherwise, in many situations, you will need to bring a vessel of hot water with you. Buying so you can make a decent coffee at work or in hotel rooms? This won’t be an issue as you can fill it up with a good tea kettle.  

Before you commit to this purchase, be sure you like the Nespresso OriginalLine capsules (or at least coffee caps that are the same shape) as Vertuo pods are not compatible with this device. If you spend a lot of time outside of the house and rely on this as your main source of caffeine, consider investing in the Minipresso tank+ (a water tank to make longer drinks) and the Minipresso case (especially if it gets thrown about in your work or schoolbag).

There's no mess involved in grinding your own beans or decanting spend grounds into your compost bin, but the cost of capsules might tot up over time and true coffee aficionados say capped coffee is stale and doesn't produce the best end product. The jury's out!
• Single-serve coffee makers, generally speaking, give you the option to use pods or ground coffee. The settings on these are calibrated to offer a suitable-brewed individual cup, making espresso and Americano drinks (depending on how much water is dispensed, and how sophisticated the settings are). Premium coffee machines may come with a built-in milk frother, though these will typically be at the higher end of your budget. 
• Drip or filter coffee makers are for coffee fans that generally have more time (and patience) on their hands to wait for their reward. A paper cone is filled with dry coffee grounds, and hot water is used to saturate the ground coffee, which slowly drips into a small carafe or vessel. Here at Real Homes, if we're not already sipping on a cup of coffee then you can bet we're messaging our colleagues to see when they're getting their fill of freshly brewed coffee. When we're testing multiple machines side by side, we prefer to travel to our test kitchen in Reading, UK. Does the machine have a long cable to stretch to the few plug sockets we have? This is something we need to know. Can it sit flush or does it have to be displayed at an angle? Another query we think about while quaffing coffee.

Ease of cleaning
Let's not pretend that we like cleaning, so if the components can fit in our tiny dishwashers, then the small coffee maker will definitely earn some brownie points. However, if it's handwash only, we'll evaluate how easy it is to take apart and reassemble once clean.

Descaling process
Cleaning the plastic and stainless steel components is not the only maintenance needed for a small coffee maker. You'll also need to descale it every couple of months. Why do you need a two-drawer air fryer?

There are so many reasons to buy an air fryer with drawers. We can certainly see the appeal and why the Ninja Dual Zone is so popular. The sectioned areas mean that you can cook two things at once (sometimes with independently-operated temperatures) and cater to different dietary requirements, too.

Having more than one compartment is perfect for cooking a protein and roast potatoes or other sides. It also means that if your oven is full of food (Christmas, for example), you essentially have another piece of cooking equipment for the rest of the catch-all culinary bits (like canapes and a bottomless portion of pigs in blankets).

The Velvetiser dupe and its specs

On looks alone, the black Chocolatier is pretty similar, and coming from the UK's oldest homeware brand, it's no surprise that it matches the more expensive model in terms of smooth hot chocolate results. Sure, you can use a milk frother, but this is much more impressive (and still small enough to have on your countertop).

Other than making a rich vessel of chocolatey goodness, it works in tandem with my coffee machine (where I can add a shot of espresso to make a mocha) and froth larger quantities without using the steam wand. 

For something that would totally pass as a self-care purchase or Christmas gift, it's a total bargain, especially while many of us are tightening the purse strings.

The one gripe I have with it is that I do actually like my drinks a little hotter (and I'm saying that despite having scalded my tongue a fair few times on coffee shop hot chocolate!). But to counter that again, this makes it more than ideal for anyone with kids that wants to make them a winter treat.

Drink customisation
At home, I tend to switch between dairy and plant-based milk. I keep a selection of chocolate flakes on hand (I do prefer the darker milk chocolate bits that are 65% cocoa) and always use my favorite mug. I also am unapologetic for the mountain of whipped cream and toppings I use.

When I feel like going a little more luxe, I'll choose the 70% cocoa option, I might add a pinch of sea salt or cinnamon, and adorn the rim of a glass coffee cup with a little cayenne pepper for an Aztec spin. Honestly, you can go to town with this machine and that 360-degree swivel makes me feel like a bit of a barista. Even matcha lattes are possible by subbing out chocolate flakes for your favorite powdered green tea.

And, come summer, it's the gift that keeps on giving. Switch hot choccy to iced lattes with the cold function. Instead of warming the milk, this chills your milk so you can have a cooler, milkshake-style drink for pennies.

It takes about five minutes. Though the dupe Hotel Chocolat model is a little slower than the OG appliance, I have actually waited far longer than five minutes for my drink in a coffee shop. Still, I didn't mark it down for that because the results are worth it.

Its compact design means I haven't accidentally sent my appliance flying, plus its small size makes it a dream to clean (all you have to do is rinse with warm water) so it does merit its 4.5 stars for a few different reasons. Much like the modern kettles these days, this milk frother has been designed with a 360-degree base so that everyone in the family (left or right-handed) can use it.

Why do you need a hot chocolate maker?

The biggest advantage of using a hot chocolate maker is that you'll get super smooth results since your beverage is being constantly being stirred as it gently heats. So you won't end up with that gross skin that sits on top of hot milk and you won't scald the milk and/or chocolate either in the microwave or on the hob.

Personally, I pick a lot of faults with shop-bought cups of cocoa. They're either too sweet, made with a powder that's not properly stirred (hello saccharine sweet bottom), or there's no whipped cream. So it's nice to get it spot on at home with this cute machine that didn't cost me much, even when it wasn't on sale!

Our best electric blanket is Cozi Home's heated throw. And there's no surprise as it's the cosiest we've tried. The clue was in the name it seems! 

The cosy stuff
And since it's so easy to switch on, and to care for, there's no reason not to. The heat controller (which is the simplest we've seen, despite the more advanced settings) is detachable. It can be quickly removed to wash the entire rest of the blanket. Whilst the fabric is polyester so not as eco-friendly as we would have liked, it does wash and dry well. We've tried it on a quick cycle and tumble-dried it on low. The detachable controller also has the added benefit of doubling up this electric blanket as a throw when you don't need the heat. Bonus!

Energy-efficiency
It has nine heat settings, yes nine. Most electric blankets have six, max. This includes a plus H button that blasts high heat for 60 minutes before dropping back to one. Being able to control the heat with more precision means you won't waste energy on a setting that's too hot, or too cold for your liking. All this for just over £60? You get why it's the best, right? 

During testing
Making both a soft sleep surface and a warm wrap-around blanket for nights-in in front of a film, I can't get enough of using this blanket in every place possible. I tend to pop in on a timer for around half an hour before I'm due to jump into bed, I love the way it adds a layer of warmth (not like a sweaty sleep surface of an under-the-sheet alternative).

We'll cover the more practical elements next, but what puts this electric blanket above the rest is how gorgeous it looks. The faux fur feels luxuriously soft and washes well. It's a super stylish alternative to the purely functional, pale yellow electric blankets that give you granny vibes. 

The cosy stuff
We've had this blanket on our bed since getting it out of the box. And it's now a stable part of getting our room ready for autumn. It goes great with our tester grey-coloured bedroom, but we know it'd look great in any space including the living room. In fact, even without switching the heat on, it's an extra layer to snuggle under. 

Energy efficiency
Not only does this Dreamland option look great but it also stands out in the efficiency department. Firstly, the electric blanket can reach a toasty 37ºC in just five minutes and has an auto-shutoff system, so you can choose how long you want it for without worry. But better, is that the blanket can monitor the temperature of the room and adjust the heat accordingly - unless you want to select one of 6 settings yourself. This clever tech makes up for the higher price point, we think. 

During testing
For when I want to show off, perhaps my friend is coming over for a sleepover, or my parents are stopping by to see the flat, I get out this electric blanket. It's just so chic. Besides the great range of settings, I'm just obsessed with how it looks on the bed. You wouldn't even know it's electric. 

Let's face it: it doesn't just get cold in your bedroom. Until the warmer spring/summer months, you might feel the chill while watching your favourite Netflix series or spending time at home. But, rather than sticking the central heating on, warm up with this soft Sherpa electric blanket. 

The cosy stuff
Great for snuggles in the living room, extra hospitable help in a guest room, or in a reading nook, this heated throw is multipurpose. And thanks to its stylish design, it doesn't look out of place, in any space. 

Energy-efficiency
While we may have needed to wash this one more than we would have liked, due to it being used most days, by more than one person, it's still been more energy efficient than switching on the heating. Besides, it's a relatively affordable buy to begin with. With six different settings, a timer, and an automatic switch-off, there's no concern when it comes to choosing your temperature. Though we did notice this one takes a little longer to heat up, which may impact on running costs. 

During testing
I've had this on our bed, over the sofa, and even wrapped around us at the desk. Used by more than one flat member, it's become a household necessity. But what I like the most about this, is that it's the easiest to clean. Completely washable, we've popped this throw in the machine and it's come out just as soft. 

Okay, so it's not exactly an electric blanket, but we couldn't not include this heated seat pad from Stoov. The smaller version of a cosy throw is ideal for when you're working from home. Rather than putting on the heating during the day, let this battery-operated buy warm up your seat as you work. 

The cosy stuff
It's not big enough to use in bed (unfortunately) but this cute heat pad is cordless to give you 1-3 hours of heat, from any seat. There are three heat settings, which may not seem like a lot compared to others higher up on this list, but we think it's all you need. On the weekends, or when you decide to pop into the office, simply recharge and pop the cover in the wash, it'll be ready for when you get back. 

Energy-efficiency
Spending two days a week working from home, and being reluctant to turn on the radiators with the risk of ranking up the energy bill, this heated pad has proven essential. It's not plug-in and instead is battery operated, which comes in handy for taking it just about anywhere; how about in the car?

During testing
I've got this clever little companion and couldn't imagine getting through the winter period without it. We've had it for around a month and can gladly say we're yet to need to replace the batteries. So far, so good. Used by my housemate and me on our alternate work-from-home days, it sure does get its uses too.

Surprisingly, this has one of the fastest heat-ups in just a few minutes. There's no waiting around for your bed to warm up. Just make sure you remember to switch it off before you sleep, as there's no automatic timer or additional controls. In testing
I've used this one traditionally as you would under my top sheet. And although I'm a hot sleeper, I have still loved having it on when it's been super cold at night. As mentioned, making sure it is turned off has been a little hit-and-miss, and I have found myself waking up super warm a few hours after falling asleep. Still, for cooler sleepers who really struggle to get cosy in bed, its a no-brainer.

The cosy stuff
There are a few heat options, which is fine, but the real benefit comes from being able to choose how hot you'd like it on either side. You're cold but your partner isn't? No need to put your feet on them for warmth, just adjust your side of the bed instead. We're yet to give this one a go ourselves, but we have called it in to try. So stay tuned for whether either party will need to compromise. Still, the reviews look good, and note how easy it is to wash and dry with the rest of their bedding. Always check the instructions before washing electric blankets. For this one you will, of course, need to detach the controller. 

Energy-efficiency
Given the limited amount of features, and lack of an automatic shut-off setting it may not be the most efficient on our list. However, the ability to turn off one side of the blanket at a time means single sleepers can save more. After all, there's no need to heat the entire bed if you (or your partner) aren't going to use it.

The best sofas to buy in 2026

Comfortable and stylish, there's a lot to like about Habitat's Julien sofa, and at just £670 for the 180cm wide two-seater or £800 for the 220cm wide three-seater, if you're looking for one of the most affordable sofas you can invest in — without compromising too much on comfort or looks — then this option comes high on our list.

At this price point there are still some compromises, of course, namely the fixed seat cushions which mean you can't just flip over a cushion if a spillage occurs, and the limited upholstery options (you're going to need to like velvet), plus the shortage of width options compared to other sofa models on this list. The low-to-the-ground frame with 40cm seat height may not be for everyone either. 

So why does the Julien still score so highly? For the price, this is one comfortable sofa. The fixed fibre-wrapped foam seats are on the slightly firmer side but the model we tested still had a good amount of squish, and we loved the seat depth, which with the foam-filled seat cushions offering good comfort and support was perfect for sitting or curling up on. Plus the low armrests are well-padded and the perfect head height for naps, or (although generally not recommended for your sofa's frame health) a great width for perching on during a party.

And, although the upholstery options are limited, the velvets are amongst some of the nicest we've sampled, with a lustre that feels a lot more luxe than most sofas of this price-point can muster and deep rich shades in some great colourways. Plus, although the coordinating range isn't extensive (there's no ottoman to turn this into a chaise sadly) the matching armchair is a great buy too.

If you're looking for a sofa to fit into a small living room, then the Holly is a great option to consider. The 125cm wide loveseat is the most compact seating size on offer, though this sofa does also come in a wide choice of larger space-saving options including two-and-a-half, three and four-seater sofas, plus a variety of chaise and corner sofa sizes. 

Its petite proportions are partly down to the slim armrests that lend the design a contemporary edge, and its ability to make a small room feel more spacious is largely thanks to those tall legs which allow the eye to travel under the sofa and reduce the frame's bulk to give the impression of more spaciousness.

A wide variety of sofa sizes and configurations are also matched by a broad selection of 70+ upholstery options, including some great family-friendly smart velvets and cottons, textured boucles, leather and linen-mix options. And the contemporary style has just enough of a nod to mid-century design that we think it will work brilliantly in either a modern or period home.

It's also a good option if you want to overhaul your entire living room suite, with a coordinating armchair and footstool available alongside the wealth of sofa sizes. What's not to love?

The convenience of the Swyft Model 03 gives it pride of place as our third favourite sofa. Our Head Ecommerce Editor Annie has this sofa in her living room and she loves it. It's definitely one to consider if you are looking for a sofa in a hurry as the convenience of their 24-hour delivery is second to none, which means that you'll be sitting and watching TV in comfort for the 16 weeks that you'd usually be waiting for a sofa to be delivered. It also arrives in boxes, meaning that it will definitely fit through your front and interior doors. It's essentially a hassle-free sofa.

Otherwise, it's undeniably great for smaller spaces that you want to make look bigger thanks to its low back and sides. It never fills a room or overwhelms a space because of this. Alternatively, it's a solid option for open-plan spaces too as having it in the middle of a space, again thanks to its lower back, will ensure the flow from one space to another is just right and it'll never feel boxy. In fact, this is a really light and airy sofa considering it sits on the floor. Another reason why we love it: you never have to worry about the dog pushing his toys under the sofa.

When it comes to comfort, it admittedly takes some getting used to because of its lower back, but rest assured that when you find your spot you'll love it. It's more of a sofa that you really kick back and lie into, surprisingly enough. And even when not in use, it never looks untidy and always gives off a modern and sophisticated vibe. It comes in three upholstery options: linen, faux leather and velvet. All of these are stain-resistant (yes, we poured red wine onto our sofa to test it, and spoiler alert: it really comes out). While you can choose from a huge range of colours, including a bunch of shades of grey.

The fact this sofa is modular means that you can rearrange it to suit the size of any room. Yes, renters, this is a game-changer! You can remove or add sections as you please, and with the chaise model, the ottoman is a separate part so that you can move it from left to right as you please. It's also worth noting that it stays in place and never moves thanks to its rubber feet.

The most affordable sofas often tend to be quite modern in appearance, but if you're after seating that's a little more timeless – and that won't break the bank — then the Cory sofa's blocky build could well fit the bill. 

Having tested a few models in different upholstery options with both the classic back
or scatter back cushion design, we've been impressed by the cosy design which strikes the best balance of sink-in comfort and sturdiness from the seat itself and the slightly elevated armrests. It's sure to keep both straight sitter and curler-uppers happy. 

There's also a good selection of sizes on offer, including two and three-seater, plus a chaise and corner sofa option that can be complemented by a matching footstool, armchair, and swivel chair. There's even a cleverly disguised sofa bed version that is a rarity amongst sofa beds in that it's barely distinguishable from the sofa in terms of seat comfort. Ideal if you're looking for a multifunctional sofa that will allow you to host guests without compromising on your own comfort if said sofa bed needs to also be your main living room seating.

The only potential downside is the shortage of upholstery options. We weren't blown away by either the slightly too-shiny Dallas woven chenille or the slightly too-thin Cosmos polyester option, although all are versatile neutrals. It's a shame the slightly more exciting scatter back cushion fabrics aren't available as the main body cover, but, as long as you want grey or beige (and statistics show most of us end up playing it safe this way) then this sofa still remains a good all-rounder at a great price point that's well worth considering, especially if you time your purchase with one of Furniture Village's fairly regular sales.

If you have the space to work with then you're unlikely to regret opting for more sofa to stretch out on, especially if you have multiple housemates, family, or friends to seat comfortably. 

A large sofa will usually be a lot more expensive which is why the Hendricks sofa is one of Habitat's most popular designs. It offers spacious seating at a very affordable price point.

There are generously proportioned two, three, and four-seater sofa options, plus a three or four-seater chaise and two corner sofa configurations to choose from, all in Habitat's luxe-look velvet upholstery. And while the colour choices may be limited, all are great shades that lend statement style to this contemporary design. 

What's more, we loved the comfort levels on all the models we tested. The seat is deep, especially if you're on the shorter side, but we found it very comfortable for sitting or lounging, with comfortable seat cushions that have a nice amount of sink, and soft yet supportive back cushions. The padded armrests are also super comfortable, with the low arms at the perfect height for resting your head for a nap.

Although the back may be a little low in height for some, this low profile design also works especially well in an open plan room where it won't interrupt the flow from one zone to another, delivering a designer look without the designer price tag.

Sold through Furniture Village, we were impressed by most of the Lounge Co. sofas we tested, but if you're looking for comfort then the Romilly sofa comes top of our list. 

The high-backed design features lumbar support cushions that make sitting back super comfortable and supportive, and we found the seat depth to be just the right in-between depth that suits either sitter-uppers or curler-uppers. The foam seat cushions are both supportive and soft. 

Available in two, three, or four-seater widths, this sofa can cater to different household needs and, if you love nothing more than mid-century interiors, this pick will look the part. Tapered legs, recessed armrests and high backs serve classic style with no compromise on comfort as you might expect with this kind of design.

Upholstery options are more extensive than Furniture Village's usual range too, with some statement velvets, linen-look cotton and viscose mixes, and a selection of soft leathers.

If time is of the essence and you're looking for a sofa with quick delivery, then a Swyft sofa is one of the fastest options going. In-stock designs arrive in under seven days and can be delivered in just 24 hours if you buy directly from the Swyft website with next-day delivery which is almost unheard of in the sofa world.

The flat-pack designs make getting your new sofa to its final destination a stress-free experience, with each box far more likely to fit through narrow doorways, tight hallways, and up multiple flights of stairs than a fully-built sofa. Having tried and tested a good selection of Swyft models (see our Swyft Model 02 sofa review and Swyft Sofa Model 03 review) we can also confirm that self-assembly is a fairly easy process, with no tools needed, although plenty of cardboard to dispose of in the aftermath.

The Model 05 sofa is one of Swyft's latest offerings, and its clean lines nod towards that trad high-backed sofa shape, making it a great option for both modern and period homes. The seating is a little on the firmer side, but we found it a happy compromise for those who want both a sit-up sofa and seating that's deep enough to curl up on if required. 

Upholstery options are limited, but they're all great shades and fabrics, with our review team giving Swyft's stain-resistant technology a good run through, and all tests (thankfully) resulting in spotless sofas to date! 

If you're looking for an affordable sofa then one of the most common compromises that will crop up is a lack of upholstery choice, and there's little more annoying than finding a sofa that's super comfortable and on budget only to discover that none of the colourways or fabrics will work in your home.

Although the Darlings of Chelsea's Darwin sofa is at the more expensive end of the price spectrum compared to other options on this list, the brand does offer the widest selection of fabric choices, with over 170 velvets, cottons, linens, and leathers to choose from in heaps of colours and patterns. Plus, you can customise the feet by choosing from four wood tones.

Comfort is also well-considered, with a great depth seat that offers the best of both worlds whether you want to sit upright or lounge, and a nice amount of sink to the seat cushions whilst still offering good support. Our only gripe was that the armrests were a little under-padded for our liking.

Another bonus is the option to have this sofa delivered dismantled and built in situ, a great solution for anyone struggling with awkward delivery access.

2 important things to consider when choosing a sofa

The best sofa for your home will depend on a range of factors, not least the size of your living room, your lifestyle, and of course, your budget. So what are the key things to consider when shopping for this key household item?

Sofa size and layout

First up, you need to work out how big your perfect sofa should be. 

You may be constrained by room size, but if you have a little more space to play with then think about how many people your sofa will need to seat on a regular basis. If you can, opt for a sofa a little bit larger than the maximum capacity to make things less of a squeeze.

Check heights, especially under windowsills or existing wall furniture, and if it isn't flat-packed then measure doors and awkward hallway angles carefully to ensure you will be able to get it into the room.

Comfort levels

Those who prefer to sit up straight with good back support might prefer a shallower seat depth with a higher backrest so that you can keep your feet planted on the floor and your back aligned. Next up, there's cushion construction to consider. Most modern sofas have either foam, fibre, or feather cushions. Dried mud on tiles and pet hair on sofas were easily thwarted by this model during testing, according to our reviewer Sarah, who tried it at home for several weeks. She found the floor head and foot controls to change suction on this machine made day-to-day use very simple and stress-free. Removing the dustbag and replacing it with a new one was a seamless operation, too. 

The suction on this model is great and it has a good range of tools, all handily stowed in the body of the vacuum cleaner. While it isn't the smallest, it is a neat design that is easy to transport and store. However, it is on the weighty side, so if you have lots of stairs, you might prefer a lighter model. We did rate it five stars, but it does (understandably) come at a higher price, which is why it's fourth on our list.

The best robot vacuum for pets

If the amount of hair has seemingly become too much to handle for daily upkeep, then investing in a robot vacuum cleaner might just change the game for you. The iRobot Roomba S9+ is not only a winner at picking up pet hair (even strands embedded deep in the carpet), its obstacle detection laid out in the mapping mode avoids small objects and can even recognize and avoid any pet accidents.

Our reviewer Linda marveled at how this robot could power up or down depending on the floor type it was tackling and enjoyed the iRobot Clean Base, which this bot self-empties into. Linda found that the Clean Base system could hold up to 30 loads of dust and hair before needing to be emptied, cutting down massively on the pet-related cleaning she needed to do. She also loved being able to create keep out zones, such as around her dog's water bowl. 

The S9+ can be controlled at the push of a button, from your smartphone or by Alexa or Google Home Assistant via a smart speaker. In terms of battery life, a single charge lasts up to 120 minutes, which Linda had no complaints about. Although it's rated five stars, it sits at number six because it can't be used as a sole vacuum cleaner; you'll need an upright or stick model to accompany it.

The best vacuum for large homes

If you have pets, you'll never want to be without the Dyson Ball Animal 2. Its clever brush heads pick up all the hair our furry friends leave behind without getting tangled up. The motorized brush bar also works to remove stubborn dirt leftover from muddy paws. Why isn't it higher on our list? It's almost $500, which is more than most people want to spend on a vacuum cleaner.

The Dyson Ball Animal 2 was the standout vacuum that allowed our tester Sarah to really feel as if she was keeping up with the onslaught of dirt and fur in her home. The suction was impressively powerful and got the job done quickly, though Sarah found herself turning down the power when using it on carpet, as it can be difficult to push on the highest setting.

The low-profile head and tell-tale ball made swishing this vac around at home almost enjoyable. The long cord means Sarah wasn't slowed by having to change outlets and the handle gave her plenty of opportunities to reach where needed when cleaning stairs and upper corners.

The best upright vacuum for pets

If you have a long-haired dog or cat, you'll love the Shark Vertex Upright Vacuum with Powered Lift-Away. In fact, it's one of the best Shark vacuums you can buy. Built with hypervelocity suction, it's powerful enough to suck up everything in its path, and it's built with the latest DuoClean Powerfins features with a self-cleaning brush roll that automatically keeps it free of hair, so you won't have to spend time removing fur that's tangled around the brush roll when you're done vacuuming. 

Our reviewer Jaclyn found he found that the anti-hair wrap feature lived up to its name, with strands never wrapping around the self-cleaning brush roll or clogging the vacuum shaft. She can also advocate for using the self-cleaning power brush combined with the crevice tool for banishing pet hair.

Besides the fact that it sucks up hair, this vacuum is packed with other handy features, including LED headlights for seeing under the furniture, tools for cleaning dog hair off the sofa and in crevices, and on-board tool storage (though it annoyingly doesn't have space for all three attachments). It also has a built-in HEPA filter to remove allergens and pet dander while it cleans.

The best deep cleaning pet vacuum

Looking for a vacuum with a large capacity, can cope with different flooring types and that will provide a deeper clean? This Shark is the model for you. There are different modes for floor types, as well as three power speeds. It's great for those who don't want to contort themselves just to get their cleaning done, with the brand’s signature Flexology design as part of the extended wand that lets you get under sofas and furniture with little effort. 

It has nine meters of cord to work with, so you can stretch it around the house even if you don’t have a lot of plug sockets. Our reviewer Molly also found it unbelievably easy to fetch the cord back in with the button on the main body of the vacuum. If you have a larger home that you’re cleaning, this will come in useful. The 360 wheels also make moving it very easy.

It doesn’t stand upright on its own and will require a lot of space to store it, but if you want something to lift historic dirt from your carpets and ensure a deep clean, then this is a smart choice. Our reviewer tested the UK model, which comes with one less attachment in the US. The body style, Duo Clean Powerfins, and Self-Cleaning brush roll features within these two vacuums are the same, though.

The best handheld pet vacuum

Have a pet that’s constantly leaving hairs on your couch or that you travel with often? The Shark Wandvac could be the best option for you. Our reviewer Christina was pleasantly surprised with how lightweight it is, which made it easy for her to go around her apartment. The stylish and ergonomic design made it a winner for her even before she started to use it.

She found it the most useful on cleaning pet beds, behind the couch, and in between radiators — places where pet hair and dirt can get trapped. The duster crevice tool was especially useful for these smaller areas. Switching between this and the pet tool took just a matter of seconds. It also displays battery time while in use, so you can keep an eye on it as you carry on cleaning. 

The only major downside that she found was that it takes 3.5 hours to recharge, which is a long time. She recommends making sure it’s docked once you’ve finished with it, to avoid being caught out. Saying that the chic navy design looks quite smart on display. As well as this, Christina also found the dust cup to be quite small — which is fine for quick cleaning, but not so great for longer cleans. This is why it’s last on our list.

The best pet vacuum for stains

Let’s be real: Pets aren’t known for being super tidy. This is especially the case if you have a puppy that you’re training or an older pet. If you have stains from these accidents consistently occurring or even deep-set ones from previous ones, this Shark Stain Striker will come in useful. 

Our reviewer Camille tested it out on both wet stains and dry stains, and found it incredibly effective on both. She also said that it removed any nasty odors, which is great news for those who know how gross pet mess can get. She advised that this could be especially handy for cat owners who repeat spray when their scent lingers. It also comes with a specialist pet stain-trapping tool, as well as a hose-cleaning tool. 

The only negatives that she had were that it didn’t work properly on old oil stains and that it is a little loud. If you have pets that hate loud noises this might not be for you — but it isn’t much noisier than a standard vacuum.

In terms of style and type, you can get a stick, canister, and upright vacuums designed for pet hair so this will come down to your own preferences. Here's what you'll need to consider before committing to your new pet vacuum:

1. Which type of flooring do you have?
First, what type of flooring do you have? If your pets tend to shed throughout the house, it can be beneficial to opt for a vacuum that is adaptable to all floor types such as carpet and hardwood or laminate floors. If you have carpet, you will want a vacuum with a good brush roll to lift the hair from the pile.

2. Would you prefer corded or cordless?
Consider what spaces you will need to vacuum. Dyson’s ball technology is easier to maneuver around and into corners, while the best cordless vacuum will make it easier to get to those hard-to-reach areas and also allow you to vacuum your car.
