Often used as a grand entrance staircase design, helical staircases do not have a core pole instead they follow a gentle flowing arc.  The tread radius can be wider on this style of staircase making them easier to ascend or descend.

Artworks was the first tile collection created by Original Style back in 1986. With limited vertical wall space for windows, Denizen Works utilised Glazing Visions’ fixed Flushglaze rooflights to flood the living spaces with light in their recently built housing scheme, Haddo Yard.

The project, on the site of a former bungalow, is located in Whitstable, Kent and takes its name from Oliver Haddo, a character in former resident Somerset Maugham’s novel, ‘The Magician’. Haddo Yard forms part of a series of projects initiated by developer Arrant Land, that seek to explore how a town with a distinct visual identity can be enhanced by adventurous but contextual contemporary design.

Having been approached directly by developers Arrant Land, Denizen Works undertook an initial design review exercise resulting in an extensive overhaul of the scheme. Despite the detailed design, problems emerged, with the ground floor living spaces extending into a single story volume to the rear of the site creating deep plans and on the second floor, apartments occupied roof space so vertical walls for windows was limited.

Denizen Works contacted Glazing Vision, who they had worked with previously, with the aim to utilise rooflights over these spaces which brought light in to the deepest parts of the plan and to create living spaces on the second floor which could be flooded with light, even with a lack of vertical wall space.

“Glazing Vision always provide good technical support which makes specifying and detailing their products very easy”, explains Andrew Ingham, the architect working on the project.

One of the most important factors for Denizen Works when they sourced the rooflights were the frameless appearance of the Glazing Vision Flushglaze rooflights. Three fixed rooflights were used, measuring 2000x1000mm, as means of providing natural daylight and helping to maintain the clean, contemporary and minimal detailing that had been employed throughout the project.

The resultant scheme comprises of 6no. two bed flats and 1no. 1 bed flat spread over three floors, each enjoying dual aspect and south-facing living spaces overlooking the gardens. The ambition for Haddo Yard was to create a distinctive and contemporary expression of local identity. The finished building asserts a bold and confident presence within its context.

Haddo Yard is the first completed building by Denizen Works and Arrant Land, helping to present a unique addition to Whitstable’s built environment. Andrew Ingham concludes “We’re very proud of Haddo Yard and we have heard first hand just how much the current residents enjoy the light, contemporary spaces we’ve designed.”

A new open plan arrangement in this Victorian terrace home has increased functionality and maximised daylight, using Glazing Vision’s fixed walk on rooflights.

Tasked with re-energising this family home in Crouch End, Mulroy Architects have introduced an abundance of light using walk on fixed rooflights transforming the centre of the property. The new open plan arrangement has increased functionality, maximised daylight and opened up views out onto the rear garden of this Victorian Terrace house.

The extension and full house renovation did away with the existing rear outrigger and dormer roof conversion that were well below current standards. The ground floor has been opened up and floor levels resolved to improve the liveable space, whilst maintaining the character and appearance throughout. A series of interlinked spaces have been designed to replace the heavily compartmentalised layout that had previously hindered the potential of the property with poor spatial qualities, uninspiring views and inadequate lighting.

One of the most impressive aspects of the development is the new kitchen housed in the rear ground extension. Granted under permitted development rights, the modern addition is walled with large areas of glazing allowing for an abundance of natural daylight, achieved with a combination of feature glazed doors and a large rooflight situated above the central kitchen island.

The rooflight itself has a party trick – Mulroy wanted to utilise the roof space above the kitchen as a terrace, but still include a rooflight as part of the scheme. A Glazing Vision walk on specification rooflight was detailed, meaning that the glazing forms part of the roof structure, and can be safely traversed by those using the terrace.

Having worked previously with Glazing Vision, the challenges of ensuring a flush finish and drainage with such a small pitch, were quickly muted through the experience and technical advice provided by Glazing Visions technical specification team. The 1140 x 3015 mm fixed walk-on rooflight was able to provide more than just the natural daylight that had been required, offering attractive views to the sky from within the plan due to the frameless design of the rooflight and maximising the usable space on the first-floor balcony for the clients.

Engineered by Glazing Vision with a 25.5mm clear laminate outer pane, 14mm Argon filled warm edge spacer cavity, and 6mm heat soak tested toughened inner pane, the walk on rooflight is designed to meet the future projected foot traffic upon them with uniform loadings of 1.5kN/m² and concentrated loadings of 2.0kN in accordance with BS EN 1991-1-1-1:2002.

Andrew Mulroy from Mulroy Architects explains “the client was very pleased with the rooflight and it delivered everything that was set out in the brief”.

Situated close to the City of London, and surrounded by sleek architectural design, this young couple were keen to remodel their home. The installation of a Flushglaze frameless rooflight from Glazing Vision was crucial to unlocking the natural light in the windowless kitchen area, whilst maintaining the privacy required from the client.

Dickson Architects were appointed to revamp this Victorian property in the Arlington Square conservation area in Islington, North London. With the client keen to transform their home and provide an open plan living/dining/kitchen at ground floor, while also remodelling their first floor to provide a generous master suite and library.

Throughout the entire project, increasing the natural daylight levels was core to the clients brief. The existing ground floor lacked the required daylight for the client and the proposed design was created to inject much needed natural daylight into these spaces. Extending the rear closet wing to form a full width ground floor extension and provide a large open planned kitchen dining space, creating the a ‘wow factor’ room for the clients’ new home.

Given the location close to the City of London, it was essential to ensure the design didn’t encroach on the privacy of the resident. With the ground floor plan being quite deep, the only way to get a decent level of natural daylight into the open plan kitchen/living space was to install a large roof light over the dining space. Helping to not only increase the levels of daylight entering the building but also, protecting the privacy of the client.

Dickson Architects chose the Glazing Vision fixed Flushglaze rooflight to flood the space with natural daylight. The addition of this 3550 x 1293mm frameless rooflight, helped to achieve the minimalist, contemporary look. The 32 mm double glazed unit, comprised of an 8mm clear heat soak tested toughened outer pane, 18mm argon filled warm edge spacer cavity and 6mm heat soak tested toughened Low E inner pane. This argon sealed layer improves the thermal and acoustic performance, both of which are important given the clients location.

Key to providing a much-needed visual connection to the sky, the frameless rooflight achieved a clear view with no visible frames and fitted in with the design ethos for the extension. Providing the ‘wow factor’ for the dining area that the client was after and, helping to separate it from the rest of the kitchen.

When supplying the roof light, there were a few manifestation details which needed to be discussed to ensure a smooth installation process and to protect the frameless view for the clients. As each junction varied, the rooflight was supplied with kerbs of different widths to accommodate the various abutment details on site – one side abutted to a brick wall; one abutted the top of a boundary wall; the others a newly formed roof kerb. Having used Glazing Vision previously, Paul Dickson, director of Dickson Architects, was aware of the technical knowledge she could utilise within Glazing Vision to ensure a smooth operation and produce the result that the client was after.

Dickson Architects design injected much needed natural daylight into the clients’ new home and has created not only a spacious kitchen dining area, but also one flooded with natural daylight. The sleek industrial palette included polished concrete floor to the extension and rear secluded courtyard, with neutral grey tones present throughout the extension. The extension is clad in Shou Sugi Ban black charred vertical timber boards. This charred texture of the cladding was chosen to complement the traditional London Stock brick on the rear façade. Emma Dickson explains that “the client is extremely happy with the end product, and especially with the amount of natural daylight that they can now enjoy in the space while dining”.

An elongated pyramid rooflight by Glazing Vision was essential in bringing daylight and enhancing visual interest in this Grade 2 listed Norfolk dwelling. Further modifications were added to a recent remodel resulting in a bright, airy and open planned home which benefits from an abundance of natural daylight and a live sedum roof.

Atelier Associates, in collaboration with RGR Developments, were tasked with transforming the ground floor, which included a dated 1950’s style kitchen extension, into an open kitchen and dining area as well as a bedroom with ensuite. However, as open-plan layouts have evolved, many homeowners have come to appreciate the merits of separation and zoning in interior design. “We sought to use the fixed lantern roof light as an implied division between the dining and the kitchen,” remarks Stephen Sharp of Atelier Associates. By doing this, the architectural designers have maintained a sense of openness while still providing a distinct visual indication of each area’s intended use.

The lighting created for this open plan kitchen diner shows how a well-planned daylighting scheme can be used to break up a room and direct one’s eye towards notable features, such as the large bi-folding doors. All of these considerations create a dwelling that, essentially, borrows light, air and space from the outside – providing a sense of continuity between the home and greenery in the surrounding area. 

Norton House’s connection to nature is strengthened by the installation of a live sedum roof. Cultivating live vegetation directly on the roof may be counterintuitive to some but the inclusion of a living roof has numerous technical advantages. Research indicates that green rooftops significantly increase the lifespan of protective membranes by protecting them from ultraviolet rays, potentially weatherproofing the landscaped area for the design lifespan of the building itself. Living roofs are also noted for their acoustic properties, protecting the interior from outside noise pollution. It can also be seen as an eco-roof in that it reduces a building’s carbon footprint and energy costs, offering fantastic insulation in the winter months whilst lowering temperatures in the summer. Incorporating a rooflight within a green roof is relatively clear-cut. Moisture retention is combated by including an EPDM membrane in the installation process, thus preventing water ingress. Specifying the right types of glass also preserves other green roof advantages such as thermal performance and UV protection.   

The elongated pyramid rooflight comprises of four double-glazed facets at a 45° angle, with minimal silicone seals providing excellent light transmission. The 32.8mm glazed sections, which are composed of 6mm heatsoak tested outer panes, 18mm argon cavities and 8.8mm annealed low-emissivity inner panes are placed within a thermally broken framework. Glazing Vision Secure and Secure+ rooflights are Building Regulations Approved Document Q compliant, tested to LPS2081 Issue 1: 2015, certificated by the Loss Prevention Certification Board and approved Secured by Design.

Renovating this Grade II listed building – designated so to preserve its Gothic arched casements – required meticulous planning and sensitivity to its heritage. Gothic architecture in popular culture is typically associated with the macabre. However, the Gothic style has been centred around the increased admission of natural light since the days of Suger. So the inclusion of rooflights in listed buildings such as this can be more straight forward than initially thought.  The elongated lantern is an appropriate fit alongside original features and more recent modifications alike, giving us an end result that harmonises older elements with contemporary additions.

The aesthetic features of the lantern rooflights are equally matched by a number of discrete technical advantages. The minimal glass-to-glass design only requires a frame at the base, which is also out of view when in situ. This provides the user with a frameless pyramid skylight that floods the interior with the most daylight possible. Stephen Sharp of Atelier Associates Architecture also points out that “The increased pitch of glass lantern rooflights allows them to stay cleaner for longer, whereas a flatter mono-pitch unit would require more maintenance.”

One could take this advantage further still by including an Enduroshield coating – an optional glass treatment available for all Glazing Vision rooflights and roof windows. This adds a hydrophobic layer to the glazed section of the rooflight, reducing rooflight maintenance by as much as 90%, making it an invaluable addition to all types of rooflight. These factors combine to increase the durability and service life of the product, in keeping with its green roof setting.

LigniaXD™ is used for external applications, and Lignia™ for internal uses. Remarkably, Lignia can have the appearance of a traditional hardwood but with added performance. For example Lignia Tuscany is a rich cherry colour but has the hardness of oak.

Durability
Both Lignia and Lignia XD are certified as Class 1 – the highest grade in testing for durability. The structure of Lignia and LigniaXD – and therefore the performance is modified through a controlled, repeatable process which means that each has the same durability, piece after piece. Whereas natural wood will vary – and so will the durability.

Swelling and Shrinkage Reduced
LigniaXD was developed not only to provide outstanding durability but also dimensional stability when wet. Swelling and shrinkage are significantly reduced, even compared to high performance timbers such as Teak. The stability afforded improves gluing and adhesive properties, minimises movement in joints such as door and window frames and means that coatings and paints need much less maintenance.

The compound used to make LigniaXD is so robust that LigniaXD  is sold with a 50 year warranty against fungal decay and rot when used outdoors above ground. Strength
Lignification is not at the expense of other properties of the wood, but it does densify or add weight. In effect this makes Lignia and Lignia XD stronger than most hardwoods. There is flexibility in the process in terms of final weight and hardness of the timber. Thus special qualities can be enhanced, and notably increased fire retardancy at higher densities.

Fire Retardancy
Reducing or delaying combustion in fires is one of the most critical elements of any new build and especially public buildings. Building regulations may stipulate that the timber cladding must meet a minimum level of retardancy when tested, and in most cases this will mean the timber being treated with a fire retardant. LigniaXD has improved fire retardancy built in and a good-excellent rating when tested.

Excellent for Coatings and Standard Fixings
Lignia and LigniaXD are relatively pH neutral which means that any potential reaction between coatings and the timber is minimised – even over considerable time. This allows finishes to adhere better and stablise, improving the lifespan of finishes and decreasing maintenance. It also means standard fixings – screws, nails, door and window fittings – can be used with the confidence that they will not be affected by the timber.

Colour Choice
Lignia and LigniaXD have a full colour management system – which means they can be selected on aesthetic merits and to genuinely replace a tropical hardwood “look”. The colour is locked in right the way through the timber meaning there is consistency when cutting and machining. There is also consistency of colour from batch to batch which is a significant advantage over sources of natural woods.

Performance Locked In – Forever
Under a microscope softwood looks like a sponge – full of pockets (tracheids) that contain fluid when the tree is growing but are empty when the timber is kiln dried. When Lignia and LigniaXD are treated, a coloured aqueous monomer is impregnated right through the board into the empty tracheids and cures as a polymer during kiln drying. The compound is locked into the timber giving it additional weight, strength, stability, durability and colour and remains inert.
