How we test non-stick frying pans

Knowing if a non-stick frying pan is good or not relies on a thorough review process in a suitable environment. This is why we on the Real Homes team like to put this kitchenware through its paces in our own cooking spaces. Our team has tried and tested (and approved) all of the pans in this guide. Here's what we look out for when testing pans, and when choosing pans to test:

Ease of cleaning
We test a lot of small kitchen appliances, so where we can get out of handwashing, we will. Of course, when popping non-stick frying pans in the dishwasher, we'll make sure they're carefully placed in the machine to avoid damage to the non-stick coating and to ensure that it's not obstructing the dishwashing arms. Once the cycle has finished, a member of the team will spot-check the item for any blemishes or imperfections... and of course, see if any food debris remains. When we manually wash a non-stick frying pan with dish soap, we'll attempt to source the same dish soap and non-abrasive sponge so we can compare one pan's results to another.

Quality of non-stick coating
Over time, we expect a little wear and tear when we wash and cook food in our pan. But, it can be incredibly disheartening to see the non-stick coating flake or chip (especially before the warranty is up). This is why we continue to use products we've reviewed, to see how long they really last.

Non-stick coating material
There is scientific research to suggest that some substances (including PFA, PFOA, lead, or cadmium) are carcinogenic. We'll try and steer clear pans manufactured with these unless there's an amazing USP that we want to review.

According to our former head of reviews, Millie, the HexClad Hybrid fry pan is expensive, but it's changing the frying pan game for good. "Not to name-drop, but Gordon Ramsey himself taught me how to make the most of this pan, and as part of his demo he scraped a metal spoon against it to prove how durable the non-stick is". She continues to say "scary, but it's true that you don't need to stick to silicone with this pan. What I will say is that the pan needs a good scrub every few uses, because otherwise, those etched lines between the nonstick hexagons will discolor. It's worth it though because this pan has become my ultimate go-to". Why not make it yours?

Annie is obsessed with her Ninja NeverStick Fry Pan and uses it several times a week. "I've been using this pan in my kitchen for the best part of six months now and it has more than proven itself to be a winner where I'm concerned". She adds "I'm not the main chef in our household but my husband will always choose to cook with this pan out of the three other ones we've got in our drawer. I also always put it in the dishwasher because I am lazy and the non-stick is still surviving".

Things to consider when buying a non-stick frying pan

Much like any other worthwhile investment, a nonstick frying pan is no different, and you should dial in on its price, capabilities, and functions. You should also consider whether or not this is for individual use or shared use and how many you will be serving when used. From there, you can decide whether the price and size best serve you, and your daily needs.  Don't forget to double-check that it works with your stovetop.

FAQs

Should you put your non-stick frying pan in the dishwasher?

Putting the frying pan in the dishwasher is quick and easy for anyone short on time, and if that's your preferred way to go, you do have several options.

Non-stick frying pans that are rated as dishwasher safe are usually pretty easy to find, and several were included on this list, but the consensus among our team and cooking experts is that you should hand-wash your non-stick frying pans. A dishwasher can be too abrasive on sensitive non-stick coating, making it lose its non-stick properties much faster.

Can you put a non-stick frying pan in the oven?

It completely depends on the materials that they are made of, as well as the temperatures that non-stick coatings can handle. High temperatures can break down the non-stick coating and even release toxic fumes. Check the instructions on which it states the temperatures it can handle. Some frying pans can handle temperatures up to 350°F, while some can tolerate up to 600°F.

If using a glass lid, check its temperature threshold too. Often, anything above 400°F can cause it to crack or shatter. And, if your frying pan has plastic or wooden handles, it is not safe to put into the oven, as they will melt and are not meant to withstand such high temperatures.
