Converting a garage into a family kitchen-dining space

With little space to extend, the Trodden family decided that the best way to create more space in their kitchen was to convert the garage. By combining the large double garage with the existing kitchen and utility room they have created an open-plan kitchen-diner with room for the whole family.

When the Trodden family from Cambridge decided that they needed a larger family kitchen, they opted for a garage conversion, as the proximity of their four-bedroom detached house to the neighbouring properties meant there was little scope to extend to the sides.

They created the space they needed by combining the existing small kitchen and utility room with the attached double garage. Externally, the garage door openings have been filled with matching brickwork, while the traditional-style timber windows are in keeping with the house so it looks like part of the original property and not a later conversion.

Inside, the new kitchen layout is based around a central island unit, and the space is filled with natural light by Velux rooflights, as well as via new windows and french doors opening onto the garden. Designed and built by Space Solutions (01767 682306, space-solutions.co.uk), the project took only three weeks and cost £25,000, excluding the cost of the new kitchen, appliances and decorating.
