Is your kitchen making your diet resolutions harder?

The Home Edit's Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin share top tips for setting up your kitchen for healthy eating, plus how you may be sabotaging your goals without even knowing it

New Year's resolutions are notoriously hard to keep, particularly when they revolve around changing your diet. Which is why, we're all for any suggestions or ideas that make sticking to our goals just a little bit easier (especially this year, when our home office happens to be at the kitchen table approximately six feet from the snack cabinet). 

And, as it turns out, you can fight the urge to open that second block of cheese with more than just your waning willpower. According to Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin of The Home Edit, making a few simple tweaks to the setup of your kitchen can make it easier to stick to a healthy eating plan.

Smart, right? Here, the duo is sharing with us exclusively a few of their best tips for setting up your kitchen for diet success, plus a few ideas for how you might be self-sabotaging without even realizing it.

1. Designate a spot for healthy snacks.

"Your healthy foods should be visible and easy to access in the kitchen," says Joanna. "The less effort something takes to prepare, the more likely you are to eat it...it's that simple!"

Similarly, keeping all of your healthy foods in one spot makes it easier to stick to a resolution-friendly choice, since you won't have to fight the temptation to choose your favorite cookies over that handful of pistachios you'd intended. "Contain your items within designated zones so healthy items are visible and easy to access," she says.

2. Pre-cut fruit and veggies.

"Cut your produce ahead of time so you're more likely to add into recipes or grab as a healthy snack," says Clea. "Store them in containers specifically made to keep produce fresh."

3. Streamline your meal-prep routine

"You should organize to streamline your meal prep routine," says Clea. "Store your oils and spices on turntables so they are easier to access. Remove all of your dry staples (pasta, grains, etc.) from their original packaging, and pour into clear air-tight canisters. This makes it easier to take inventory of your fridge/freezer on a weekly basis, and always make sure you have your essentials on hand for whipping up quick and healthy recipes."

4. Out of sight, out of mind.

Sticking to a healthy goal doesn't mean completely eliminating your favorite foods from your life. But you can make them a little less available. "The most common kitchen mistake is thinking that if you put your favorite cookies front and center, you won't grab for them....BECAUSE YOU WILL," says Joanna. "Be honest with yourself. If you want to keep cookies around 'as a treat,' just keep them on the top shelf in a concealed bin. Storing your 'as a treat' items on the top shelf means you're less likely to grab for them."

5. Stock up on frozen foods that offer quick yet nutritious meal options.

 "We love keeping Birds Eye veggies and Healthy Choice Power Bowls and Power Wraps on hand because they are versatile, and can be prepared as a meal, side dish or as a base," says Clea.

6. Eat the rainbow!

"If your fridge or freezer contains fresh and frozen items in every color, then you're probably doing something right."
