Last year saw the comeback of cottagecore, as well as fun variants including playful fairycore, luscious forestcore, and even dark cottagecore. These styles, as well as a more realistic take on achieving these looks, will be big in 2024. 

“The biophilic design trend has been on the rise for a while now, and it's no surprise this has also taken over TikTok,” says Ricky Allen, interior designer and founder of Ever Wallpaper. “People are incorporating natural elements like indoor plants, wood, and stone into their living spaces to create a sense of connection with the earth.” 

Whether you do this with an aesthetic in mind or not, adding a touch of nature to your interiors will bring calmness and vibrancy to your home.

2. Vintage revival

Nostalgia is a big part of social media trends at the moment — and it's no different for TikTok interior design in 2024. 

“On TikTok, people are bringing vintage styles and incorporating them into modern spaces,” explains Ricky. “This trend also ties in with sustainability, as secondhand items are being given a new life.” 

You could take a leaf out of that particularly environmentally-friendly book by shopping at secondhand furniture stores like Goodwill, upcycling pieces, or thrifting to find trinkets and treasures. 

3. Moody martini

Another TikTok interior trend which brings in newstalgia (mixing new with vintage) is the moody martini aesthetic. “This is the chic vibe you get from the homes of celebrities like Ashley Benson, Ashley Tisdale, and Laura Harrier, which we've never been able to sum up into words — until now,” says Nishaa Sharma, social editor at Real Homes. 

“The moody martini aesthetic is all about vintage-inspired decor, ornate glassware, indulgent fabrics, and warm but moody tones.” Don’t forget the olive and martini motif itself, too.

4. Post-modern pastel

The year 2023 was officially the year of pink, with bright hues boldly storming into interiors everywhere.

Nishaa explains, “Thanks to the release of the Barbie movie, 2023 saw the renaissance of ‘girlhood’ and a love for embracing our inner child, which we're going to see elevated in 2024.

“Touches of bright colors and dopamine-decorating are meeting Mediterranean, Danish, and French style through hand-painted dinnerware, candles, and fun shapes and patterns in our textiles and soft furnishings.”

Pastels are also a key 2024 small space color trend.

5. Mid-century modern

For those who love the idea of the moody martini trend, but like using more color, mid-century modern is also set to be a big TikTok interior trend for 2024. 

“This enduring style features vintage beauty with elements like tapered legs, arc-shaped lamps, and retro colors like avocado green and mustard yellow,” says Mohammad Ahmed, interior designer and founder of The Home Guidance. 

You only need a couple of furniture and decor pieces in these styles to make a statement.  

6. Curated maximalism

While there’s always a place for making your small space look luxe with minimalistic, monochromatic interiors, 2024 is all about color. “TikTok has brought back the bold and colorful trend of maximalism,” says Ricky. “People are now not afraid to make a statement in their homes, from vibrant wall colors to patterned furniture.” 

There will be less of a focus on the extreme end of this in 2024, though — be playful, but don’t overwhelm the space.

When bringing TikTok trends into your home, Ricky suggests not to go all-in straight away. “Incorporate cost-effective decor like throw pillows or cheap wall art and see if you like the style before adding more,” he explains. “Also, feel free to mix and match different styles.” Get creative and use these ideas to bring in your personality.

How to remove holiday food stains

While it might be easy to learn how to decorate for Christmas without damaging your space, we can't guarantee that the guests you invite for Christmas dinner will be careful while nursing a glass of wine or pouring gravy. So to put your mind at rest, Germain, Ruggable's product expert, has uncovered what to do in common Christmas dinner stain situations, beginning with our favorite: red wine.

1. Red wine

Of course, the crowdpleaser is likely responsible for the most damage, so you'll want to know how to remove red wine stains...just in case. 

"For acidic stains like wine, the most effective spot cleaning method is a simple mixture of cool water and liquid dish soap," Germain noted. "Wet a clean, color-safe cloth with cold water and dab the stain starting from the outer edge and working inward to prevent the stain from spreading. Then, mix a few teaspoons of dish soap into 1-2 cups of cool water in a bowl or empty spray bottle and dampen another clean cloth with the mixture."

In a Germain-approved TikTok video, @Jeeves_ny pours water and vinegar over the stain, puts a towel over the spill, and irons it, as evidenced above. With three tries, the stain is removed, but Germain warns to avoid this with protein-based stains like gravy.

2. Hot Chocolate

There's nothing quite like a cup of hot cocoa, just don't expect it all to stay in the mug — especially if little ones are doing the sipping. Fortunately, clean-up is fairly straightforward. 

"Enzyme-based or surfactant store-bought carpet spot cleaners are the most effective at removing chocolate stains," Germain noted. 

In a TikTok video Germain flagged, @omahacarpetcleaning combines ice-cold water and dish soap and gives the chocolate stain a few dabs until it's wiped away.

3. Syrup

Who doesn't appreciate a pancake breakfast after opening up all of Santa's goodies? It's less enjoyable when syrup makes its way onto the floor, but no sweat — if you can get red wine out of your carpet, syrup is a lot easier, though much stickier. 

"If using liquid dish soap to remove syrup stains, make sure you rinse out all soap/cleaning product residue," Germain recommended. "You can do this by dabbing the area with a cloth dipped in clean, cool water, or pouring a small amount of water on the area and soaking it up with a dry cloth. Repeat this until you no longer see bubbles when you press down or feel a soapy film."

4. Gravy

We regret to inform you that Christmas table settings might at some point include a mess or two. When a classic turkey dinner is involved, there's no telling where the gravy might go. 

"Use a paper towel to absorb as much gravy as possible," Germain recommended for spills. "To help with absorption, sprinkle a thick layer of baking soda over the spill. Allow it to sit for at least 30 minutes, and then vacuum up the baking soda. Mix a few teaspoons of dish soap into 1-2 cups of cool water in a bowl or empty spray bottle and apply the mixture to the stain."

"I am always thinking of nontraditional ways to DIY items," she tells Real Homes. "I was drawn to the idea of creating a tree collar, simply because they are often expensive and I had not seen many options out there." 

Of course, this could be applied to a tree of all sizes, as evidenced on social media, but we're pleased to know that it spices up a small setup to look chic and festive. Plus, we can consider it one of the best ways to save money on a Christmas tree. Win-win!

"Anyone can do it," Villaneda assures us. "It's a high-end look on a budget."

I’m a huge fan of this trend, and have seen it emerge in the past few years as a real staple of the cooler seasons. This is because it’s really easy to bring into the home, is super versatile, and it looks effortlessly sophisticated.

If you’ve seen dark decorating ideas and dark academia all over your Insta feed and are wondering what it’s about, I’m here for you. I’ve spoken to experts to find out about the history of the trend, its style hallmarks, and how you can get the look at home.

Dark academia interior design, explained

For those who love dark cottagecore but also love a cozy library, this trend is the one for you. Here’s everything you need to know about it. 

What is dark academia?

First of all, let’s break down the basics. “Dark academia decor is a trendy interior design style inspired by the intellectual and nostalgic ambiance of academic settings in literature and film,” explains Alice Moszczynski, interior designer at Planner5D. “It blends traditional and vintage elements with a moody, scholarly atmosphere.” 

Where did dark academia come from?

While it may seem like the trend has come out of nowhere, it actually goes way back. “The term dark academia was first coined by author Donna Tartt in her novel The Secret History,” says Ricky Allen, interior designer and director of Ever Wallpaper.  

Moszczynski adds that the trend's origins can be traced back to 19th and 20th-century literature like The Secret History and Brideshead Revisited, which romanticize prestigious universities. “In recent years it has gained popularity on social media, with enthusiasts sharing their passion for this aesthetic.” Websites like Tumblr, Pinterest, and Instagram have all been responsible for its recent revival. 

What are the dark academia style hallmarks?

There are a few key colors and textures that make up the trend’s signature style. “Features of dark academia decor include a rich color palette with deep greens, browns, burgundy, and navy, vintage furniture like leather armchairs and wooden bookshelves, and an abundance of books and scholarly decor,” says Jade Lafleche, interior design consultant at CLV Group. “Textiles like velvet and wool, candles, low lighting, and indoor plants also contribute to the look.” 

How to decorate with dark academia

Want to bring the dark academia look into your rental? Allen has a few ideas. “To avoid damaging your walls, opt for removable wallpaper or contact paper to create an accent wall with a dark academia-inspired pattern,” he says. Incorporating vintage pieces is also an easy way to do this. “You can add character and charm to your space by incorporating antique books, old maps, and vintage frames.” 

Don’t forget about textural elements, either. “Velvet, leather, and tweed are great choices for achieving the dark academic look. Use them in your throw pillows, curtains, or statement pieces.”

Lafleche also says that you can’t forget about the biggest element of the trend: Books. “In the living room, a large floor-to-ceiling dark wood bookcase or built-in will quickly transform the space,” she says. 

However, this can be more costly and unfeasible for many smaller spaces. “If you already have shelving, a fun DIY project is to add paint and wood stain to create a darker finish. Then, take some old books to fill your shelving.” Raid your local Goodwill or secondhand bookstore to find some really unique pieces.

Ready to get started? From paper crafts to fab fabrics, I’ve put together a mixture of clever and cheap fall decor ideas. I’ve broken down each idea, listing the products needed, as well as walking through a step-by-step guide. 

Sock pumpkins

Got some socks that you no longer wear or that you’ve grown out of? Repurpose them into these adorable pumpkins. 

Here's what you'll need

How to make

Step 1: Cut the ankle off your sock, so you’re just left with a sock that would just cover your foot.

Step 2: Fill the sock with cotton wool, leaving enough room to scrunch up the top.

Step 3: Tie string around the top of the filled sock, so you have a little stem. 

Step 4: Then, wrap the string over the rest of the sock section by section, pulling the string tightly so you get the pumpkin texture.

Step 5: Wrap more string around the “stem”, so it’s completely covered. You might need to use glue to completely secure this.

Pumpkin centerpiece

Having a centerpiece on your dining table or coffee table adds interest, and draws the eye to the area. This one screams fall and is effortlessly elegant. 

Here's what you'll need

• A hollow, thin plastic pumpkin: This speckled pumpkin from At Home would look great.
• Fake fall leaves: Try using different colored ones, like these At Home leaves.
• Fake flowers: This At Home cotton ball stem is so pretty.

How to make

Step 1: Starting from the outside edge of pumpkin’s stem, poke larger fall leaves around the stem.

Step 2: Work your way around the pumpkin stem, poking flowers and leaves in a circular patterns until you reach the stem. You could go for a uniform color, or mix and match your colors throughout.

Step 3: Take a step back, and see if there are any obvious gaps. If there are, fill these in with more fake leaves and flowers.

Top tip: Make sure the stems of the leaves and flowers you pick are sharp enough to poke through the pumpkin. If they aren’t, you could always use a screwdriver to create the holes.

Fabric ghosts

Finding cute Halloween decor can be really tricky — so why not make your own? This idea requires slightly more material than some of the other DIYs, but the result is so worth it.

Here's what you'll need

• Foam cones: You can get 16 in this Bright Creations pack that's Amazon's Choice
• Foam pumpkins: This Lenwen pack on Amazon works out at about $1 per pumpkin
• Hot glue: This smaller Surebonder one from Walmart is perfect for crafts
• White fabric squares: You could grab a few of these Waverly Walmart squares.
• Peel and stick black felt: Nuolux sells this 20-piece pack at Walmart.
• Scissors
• Small plastic orange pumpkins: At Home's pumpkin scatters are just $6.74 for 11

How to make

Step 1: Hot glue a foam pumpkin on the tip of the cone. You can repeat this depending on how many you want to decorate.

Step 2: Drape the fabric square over the cones to create the “ghost” body.

Step 3: Cut out circular eyes on the felt, and stick them onto the fabric.

Step 4: Tuck the orange pumpkins into the middle of the ghost, and glue them on so it looks like the ghost is holding it.

Fall leaf tray

This TikToker specifically shops at the Dollar Tree for supplies, but you can grab these plastic fall trays from lots of other places. When you're finished, you could display jewelry in it or even use it as key storage.

Here's what you'll need

• Leaf tray: Greenbrier has a stylish pack of three on Amazon
• Round beads: There are 500 pieces in this Walmart Lotfancy set
• Hot glue
• Paint: Apple Barrel's sunkissed peach paint is such an aesthetic shade, and comes in at under a dollar at Walmart
• Baking soda
• Bowl
• Paint brush

Step 1: Glue three beads to the bottom of the tray in a triangle pattern so they elevate the tray. 

Step 2: Mix the paint and baking soda together in a bowl, measuring in a 1:1 ratio. The baking soda gives it texture and a matte finish. 

Step 3: Paint the tray. Coat this two to three times, until you get an evenly colored and coated finish.

Step 4: Let the tray dry completely before using.

Ghost garland

Paper crafts aren’t just for kindergarten, you know. This is seriously low-cost option would look amazing as Halloween decor. 

Here's what you'll need

• A4 Paper
• Pencil
• Scissors
• Black felt tip marker
• Glue
• String

How to make

Step 1: Draw ghost shapes on your piece of paper with a pencil. You could go for a classic ghost shape, or even create your own characters.

Step 2: Cut out the shape with your scissors.

Step 3: Draw eyes onto your ghost with the black pen. You could draw funny eyes, cute eyes, or even super scary eyes — get creative!

Step 4: Cut out your string, and then stick the ghosts onto it. Make sure to evenly space these out, so they look neat.

Step 5: Hang the garland up wherever you like. You could do this on the fireplace, coffee table, or even your TV stand.

Top tip: If you want to make it even more festive, you could replace the string with fairy lights, and stick the ghosts onto the lights for a cute, glowy effect.

2) @honeycottageshop 

To up the ante on fairycore vibes, you’ll definitely want to follow Rachel of @honeycottageshop’s amazing whimsical thrift finds on TikTok. Her account features lots of enchanting hauls with smaller home decor items like teapots, as well as “thrift with me” videos that can totally give you your thrifting fix from the comfort of your bed. Rachel has also found some absolute steals — like this viral vintage lotus lamp for only $15 — and plenty of home decor inspiration, too.

3) @chlogonzo

Whether you’re decorating your dorm or first apartment, you’ll find lots of inspiration tucked away on @chlogonzo’s page. Chlo finds lots of fun thrift finds, including lots of small accent pieces that work well in a new space. Allyn Lewis’ TikTok page is one of my all-time favorite ways to shop for thrifted and vintage home decor items. Whether it’s statement-making colored glass — which I use to hold hair clips and cotton swabs in my bathroom — brass knick knacks for cute and trendy accents, or her coveted vanity mirror trays, some of my favorite decor pieces in my apartment were sourced from her. Birdie Wood of @thriftyweenqueen on TikTok is one of the most delightful people to follow on the internet. Set your intention before you start: Before you begin your home reset routine, it’s essential that you set the intention. For best results, decide what you would like to achieve and then spend the time focusing on that area of your home. With all of the fuss over 90s Halloween decor and upcycled ghost paintings on TikTok, I can’t be the only one already plotting their spooky season aesthetic (I’ve actually been thinking about this since July, but that’s beside the point). And, while I love a cottagecore moment as much as the next gal but there’s something about the witchcore trend that has me spellbound (see what I did there?).

What Is witchcore style?

The witchcore style is all about, well, witch stuff. I’m not talking about cutesy Halloween witch decor, tho. Think more along the lines of occult decor with a foresty gothic vibe and obvious items such as cauldrons as well as more subtle nuances like velvet textiles and moody paint colors. 

The style mostly refers to a home decor preference, however, those with witchcore style also practice a more witchy lifestyle with a dedication to herbal practices and rituals such as tarot card reading — and this tends to show up in their autumn decor pieces as well. 

Where did witchcore come from? 

Like almost every home decore trend that ends in a “core,” the word “witchcore” stems from TikTok. However, this popular style trend existed long before the social media app came into our orbit. Witchcore is all about focusing on ancient practices, such as altar creation, sage burning, herbal remedies, and a more gothic, witch-inspired style. 1. Spritz sleep spray

I'm such a fan of spritzing sleep spray around my room and my bed. As well as being relaxing, scents can be a clever way to get your brain into the sleep zone. By consistently spraying the same spray around your room and sheets before you sleep, you’ll eventually automatically associate that scent with the idea of going to sleep. So clever! Dr. Teal’s viral sleep spray is a popular option, but I also recommend looking for ones with lavender scents and cotton scents.

2. Wear cozy pajamas 

As Barbie says, you’ve always gotta dress for the occasion. That goes for sleep as well, people. Sure, not everyone will see your cute fit, but that doesn’t matter. Having a quality pair of PJs to put on before you sleep will help you fully relax and feel super comfortable. I recommend looking for ones with silk or cotton, as they’re both soft and breathable. Just make sure not to lounge around the apartment in them though — yes this can be tempting, but you’ve got to save them for slumber to get the full effect. 

3. Turn on a white noise machine

I’m one of those people who has to have background noise. Creaky sounds when it’s silent? NTY! That being said, when I discovered white noise machines, I was a li’l skeptical about how beneficial they actually are. How can noises make sleep better? How?! Well, they do. 4. Put on an sleep mask

Turn yourself into a 90s rom-com main character by bagging a sleep mask that you can go to sleep in and dramatically take off in the morning. I struggle to sleep in rooms with any light, so I have found good ol’ sleep masks to be the best way to block out rays. I have both a cooling one and one with lavender, which I find so soothing, but I’ve also got my eye on one that is made to fit around the eyes. Hey, there’s no such thing as too many masks. 

5. Keep your room cool

Let’s face it, there’s nothing cute about a stuffy, hot room. So sweaty, so uncomfortable. Instead, make sure that your room is super cool. This is because your body drops temperature when you’re falling asleep, so by making sure your room is cold already, you can speed up that process. TikToker Lorafied says 68 degrees Fahrenheit works best, but I’m not expecting you to get a thermometer out. If you don’t have AC in your room, try using a fan instead. BTW, you can get it to blow cold air, with a few handy tricks. 

6. And keep your bed cool too

Want to go all-out on the cold vibes? You can get your bed feeling super chill too with the help of one handy buy: A cooling mattress topper. As well as making your bed breathable, cooling mattress pads also help with aches and pains. I’m personally a bit of a night sweater (sorry for the TMI, but it’s true!), so I’m absolutely going to be copying this hack ASAP.

Okay, I’ll admit it — TikTok cleaning hacks have completely transformed my spring cleaning game this year. From deep cleaning my couch to de-staining my wooden spoons, I have never felt more motivated to get on top of all the dust, grime, and everything not so fine. I’m a self-confessed messy queen, so this is big news, people.

Because of my new love of cleaning, I’ve spent hours scrolling through TikTok (no surprise there) and my FYP has pretty much been filled with cleaning hacks. These cleaning hacks are easy to do, they're low-budget, and they ensure you aren’t at risk of damaging your rental (aka no detergent bottles stuck in the toilet — yes I’ve seen it, no I’m not giving it a try).

Here are the TikTok hacks I love and think will make your chores a lot easier, plus they don’t require you to buy any new cleaning supplies or cleaning tools if you'd rather use what you already have lingering around at home. Or if you don't have any more storage space — I get it.

6 TikTok cleaning hacks you need to try

1. Clean cabinets with a mop and cloth

Manual mops are fab for getting in all the gross corners of your floor. But, have you ever thought about using them up high instead of down low? I sure hadn’t, until I watched this video. Simply wrap a cleaning cloth around your mop head, spritz on some all-purpose cleaning spray, and use that big ol’ handle to reach up to those tricky-to-clean cabinets. I always tend to get these surfaces super sticky when cooking and forget to wipe them down after, so I’m very much loving this idea.

2. Make a dust repellent cleaning spray

First of all, the key word here is repellent — it doesn’t just make the dust magically disappear, y’all. This is a super handy option to stop dust from settling, thanks to the art of science. The olive oil in it repels the dust, while the vinegar stops it from leaving your surfaces tacky. Mix these into a spray bottle (like these Amber glass ones from Amazon) with water and a few drops of citrus-scented essential oil. Yep, vinegar and olive oil do not smell good together (unless you’re dipping bread in them, obvi). From there, give it a good shake, and get spraying.  

3. Boil wooden spoons in hot water

All of us on the Real Homes team have been giving this spoon cleaning hack a try, and have been left horrified at how much dirt actually stays inside a wooden spoon. Think of all the germs you’ve been stirring into your food this whole time! EW. Get all those cooking particles out by mixing one tablespoon of baking soda into a jug filled with boiling water. Then, drop in the spoons, and leave them for twenty minutes. Once they’ve soaked completely, lift them out and leave them to dry on a towel. 

4. Gloss wooden or laminate floors

When in doubt, gloss over it, baby! For anyone who has wooden floors that need a revival, I’ve got you. I have lived in rentals where the wood has needed some major TLC, and this is a super quick way to get them looking shiny and new. Drizzle the gloss all over your floor (the one in the video is hard to buy online, so I've found an alternative on Amazon), then rub it in with a mop — be sure to use one like the video so it gets in all the gaps properly. Abracadabra, the scratches are gone.

5. Put toilet gels inside your trash can lid

There is nothing worse than opening your trash can and being hit with an awful smell *gags.* I love using these toilet gels in my bathroom, and it totally makes sense to use them in your trash can, too. Use a toilet gel deodorizer, like this one from Amazon, to attach a few gels onto the inside of your garbage can lid, which will keep it smelling fresh for weeks. I recommend pairing this hack with scented liners for an extra boost. 

6. Scrub the couch with a saucepan lid

When the worlds of the kitchen and living room combine, there’s mega magic to be had. I personally gave this couch cleaning TikTok hack a try and was seriously amazed by the results. Wrap a saucepan lid with a cloth, then dip it in a bowl of boiling water mixed with a laundry pod. Then, scrub it all over your couch. It’s that simple. I don’t have an upholstery cleaner and thought it was a really cost-efficient way of getting out all those dark spots.

Perhaps it’s the fact that it’s the app of choice for many or maybe it’s because so many interior design enthusiasts share their home setups ⁠— combined with some seriously catchy tunes obvi ⁠— that have us obsessed. I’ve spent so much time relaxing on my couch, but I’ve never actually thought about how dirty it might be. That was until I was scrolling through my FYP and came across the TikTok viral couch cleaning hack, which completely grossed me out. So much so, that I just had to try it for myself. Chances are, you've already got everything you need to try this hack just lingering around at home, so, you can understand why I found it so tempting. Yep, you won't need an upholstery cleaner to test this out.

All you need to grab from around your place is a laundry pod, a saucepan lid, a dishcloth, and a bowl of hot water. Sounds weird, but in the name of journalism, of course, I had to give it a go. And obviously, I filmed it for TikTok, so you can watch what happened...

Just so that you know: I tried this hack on my couch, which I have had for a year and a half — and literally sit on every day. So while it hasn’t accumulated years and years of dirt, it definitely has seen enough to deserve some TLC.

Honestly? It might not look like this hack made a huge change in the video, but I was amazed at how well this hack worked! I was a little skeptical at how good a saucepan lid would be to clean with. But it’s just the right weight to apply pressure to the couch, especially when paired with the soaked dishcloth. You do have to put in a bit of hard work, but there’s nothing wrong with that.

It managed to erase all of the dark spots on my couch after going over it a couple of times, and the best part is that now my couch smells absolutely incredible. It did stay damp for a few hours though, so it's best to try this in the morning or long before you plan on having a Netflix sesh.

If you’re looking for a low-cost, quick way to make your couch sparkle, then in my eyes this is the perfect solution. 

How to do the TikTok couch cleaning hack

1. First off, I tied the fabric to a saucepan lid. I used a slightly smaller one than other videos as my cloth wasn’t big enough, but I don’t think this affected the results as it was still pretty hefty.
2. I then dipped it in water mixed in with one laundry pod. I’ve seen a few different versions of this hack, with some using dish soap and dishwasher tablets in the water, but I went with the OG version.
3. I placed the saucepan on my couch, and holding its handle I worked to move the lid up and down each cushion, visibly cleaning it with every swipe. I made sure to clean the cushions, the back of my sofa, and the sides and arms. I could clearly see the spots I had missed, which helped a lot.

What I'll do next time

I will try it with a bigger saucepan next time, just to see if that helps get more of the dirt out. I didn’t have that much dirt come off on the cloth, but that could be because the couch isn't that old. I’ll also definitely try it with a dishwasher tablet, just to see if that affects the results at all. But overall I’m seriously impressed and will be trying this on my other couch and on other items around the house.

So, I know there are plenty of ways to organize a fridge, but just where do I start?

Of course, I spend a hell of a lot of time on TikTok, just like pretty much everyone else my age, so I went straight to my app for inspo. The #CleanTok community has a bunch of clever ideas for getting your fridge looking majorly aesthetic. Storing all of my food in separate containers means that shelving space and drawers can be used as efficiently as poss. Plus, knowing where everything is will also make meal planning super easy, so nothing goes to waste and you’re not buying more than you need to. Cute, time-saving, money-saving, and eco-friendly? Yes, please.

Okay, I’m all about snack organization right now, and this is super neat for those snacks that need to be refrigerated. You can chop up all your different fruits, and then pop them in small containers. The size means you can stack several of them together in one drawer, then when you’re ready to get munching, you simply can get them out and carry them wherever. No plates required.

2. Soda can containers

I’m one of those people that firmly believes that all drinks taste better in a can, especially when they’re cold. But they usually take up so much space, so I’m always having to manage a one in, one out system. By putting them in a long, deep container that isn’t too wide, you can fit loads of them in without it taking up your whole shelf. Then when you need a fizzy-pick-me up, you can chill out as you’ll have loads already chilled.

3. Egg Storage Holders

Ah, it’s the ever-long egg debate — should they go in the fridge or not? I say yes. I currently have them in a holder on the fridge door, but one OTT fridge opening and I’m about to have a complete mess to clean up in the kitchen. These are such a compact way of keeping lots of eggs neatly stacked. And look how they roll! Making omelettes is about to get 10x more fun.

After posting a video of this find and going viral, the chair has pretty much been out of stock since. I mean, I totally get why.

I’ve always struggled with knowing how to organize my desk. I know how to clean, obviously, but in terms of making my desk look aesthetic while still staying functional, I’ve never found the right balance. Generally, I’ll tidy it, and it will look super cute for a day or so… then it gets instantly messy with all the pens, notebooks, and magazines I need for work. Sigh.

So, as with everything nowadays, I’ve turned to TikTok for organization inspo — and as always, it has delivered. I’ve scrolled through my feed to find useful products that look gorgeous enough to motivate me to maintain a clean WFH space on the daily and long term.

 1. Acrylic storage

Acrylic home decor is having such a moment, which is no surprise as it’s a versatile pick when it comes color, size options, and shapes. If you're renting an apartment and can’t hang big shelves on your wall, these li'l shelves are an adorable alternative. They’re super useful for organizing larger items you need to have handy, like books and notepads. You can also make them a cute decorative feature with small plants, photo frames, and candles.

If you’re living in a smaller space but have lots of items you want on your desk, this is a really fun option. I’m a massive child at heart, so if something is fun to use, I’m all over it. This idea isn’t just handy for stationery, you could pop your blue-light glasses, protein bars, and remotes in there, too.

As the TikTok says, there's just something majorly mesmerizing about that *click click click* sound the keyboard makes. As well as being super useful, they're such a cute way to add a pop of color and personality to your desk. I'm especially obsessed with these typewriter-style keyboards with big keys, which will make clanging out those Twitter debates so much more satisfying. 

I'd never even thought about deep-cleaning my wooden spoons before, but seeing TikToks of other users' utensils after a soak in boiling water had me immediately turning on the kettle.

There are a few different versions of this cleaning hack floating around. Some use boiling water on its own, others use the dishwasher tablet trick, and a few opt for baking soda, vinegar, or both. I decided to go for a happy medium and scooped a tablespoon of baking soda into a plastic measuring cup to dissolve in my boiling water, before soaking my wooden spoons and utensils for about 20 minutes.

I tried this out on my spice-stained wooden spatula from circa 2018, as well as my year-old utensils that were included with my Always Pot and Perfect Pan from Our Place. Here's exactly what happened.

The verdict

Long story short, this hack definitely works. I could visibly see a massive difference in the before and after, especially with my oldest wooden spatula. The turmeric stains are completely gone, and I feel like the soak also cleaned off less visible buildup from the rest of my utensils.

It's also super-easy, fairly quick, and doesn't require buying anything extra. You can do this with just boiling water, but if you want an extra boost like I did, baking soda and vinegar are probably both already in your cupboard. Be sure to wash and dry your spoons as usual once you're done to really see the results.

What I'll do next time

I'll be doing this again, but there are a couple of ways I'll switch up my deep-cleaning technique going forward.

After seeing the gross results from the cooking ends of my utensils, I have a feeling there will be similar buildup on the handles. So next time, rather than using a measuring cup, I'll be grabbing a casserole or baking dish that allows the spoons to be fully submerged and gets the handles clean as well. 

While looking into wooden utensil cleaning methods, I also discovered that the reason they aren't typically soaked in water is because it can be drying and damaging to the wood. It's advised to treat your wooden utensils with a mineral oil every month (again, something I had never thought about). 

Before breaking out the baking soda again, I'll be sure to pick up some mineral oil to give my spoons the TLC they need after an intense cleaning treatment and give them the full spa experience every month.

I’m awful at organizing so I'm in need of some bed sheet storage ideas. I’m also a massive sheet collector — I just like having all the pretty colors and plenty of spares, because you never know when friends might pop by (that’s what I keep telling myself anyway).

I'm not perfect (I've literally spilled the beans while opening a packet), but buying a good single-serve coffee maker is only half the job done in my eyes.

How to DIY a glassless mirror in three simple steps

• A staple gun — This one has over 2,400 4.5-star reviews on Amazon
• A heat gun (or your hairdryer)
• Canvas pliers — This set comes with a pair of staple removers which will come in handy

Here's how to do it:

1. Wrap your canvas with Mylar film and secure the edges with tape. For professional-looking results, you'll aim to put the tape at least 1/4" away from the front of your mirror. Use a little extra tape to tuck any excess film into non-visible parts of the board.
2. Just like a blow-out, you'll want to smooth out your Mylar film using your heat gun or hair dryer. But don't spend too long in one spot or you might damage/melt the material. The main purpose here is to iron out any remaining creases.
3. If you spot rippling — don't freak out. Those staples you popped in should be removable, and you should be able to make the necessary tweaks to smooth it out. If you want to be cautious, use your canvas pliers to you don't tear the film. Once you're happy with the tension, re-staple the canvas to keep things safe and secure.

You'll also want to double-check the type of mirror you have and if it already has hardware built in. If it's heavy, a more sturdy hanging method is needed. For lightweight mirrors (like the one above), you can often get away with using adhesive strips.

To follow the hack closely, you'll need to purchase Command strips (or similar). Carefully lay the mirrors facedown on the floor and measure the distance between each hook, then mark this up on the wall. Use a ruler and level to pencil them in before you stick anything on. Then apply the backs to the wall. Once they've set, press your mirrors firmly onto each and hold. Give them time to properly settle and attach to the backings.

On the lookout for an air fryer cleaning hack? As much as this gourmet gadget has changed the way we eat forever, making sure the basket is ready to use each time isn't the most exciting thing on our to-do list.

Even if you own the best air fryer, manufacturers haven't quite come up with a pyrolytic model just yet. (By the way, that's totally my idea if any entrepreneurs are reading!)

In the meantime, while we're waiting for a self-cleaning appliance to land on the market, air fryer cleaning hacks are super popular on TikTok and there are tons of videos to feast your eyes on.

However, not all methods are approved by brands — in fact, some may do more harm than good. So we've done the handiwork and trawled through videos to vet which methods are a go, and which ones are a damn right no.

The air fryer cleaning hacks you should avoid

Wondering what you can cook in an air fryer? A soapy solution isn't one of them. We've seen plenty of TikTok videos that advocate pouring your favorite dish soap and water into the basket, selecting a temperature or program, and letting it do its thing. While this method sounds great if you're grossed out by touching food, everything you make from there on will taste like your dishwashing liquid. Our advice? If slimy debris gives you the ick, invest in some rubber gloves.

It goes without saying that the video we've used is an extreme example. You should clean your air fryer after use as it can affect your health. But more on that below...

Real Homes verdict: Instead of trying out the popular dishwasher tablet hack, you could invest in an air fryer liner from Amazon. Paper or silicone, these sheets literally lift out of your appliance for fuss-free cleaning. Alternatively, using a sponge and eco-friendly washing-up liquid will also do the trick.

Otherwise, most air fryers have removable, dishwasher-safe parts, so use your tabs for the greater good and clean a full load of crockery and cutlery! Calling it a hack implies that this how-to can save time, however, dishwasher vs. handwashing vs. TikTok trick — the social media method comes last.

What not to do when cleaning an air fryer

1. Using a scourer to clean your air fryer

Remember that episode of The Office where Michael Scott screams "No, God! No, God, Please No! No! No!" Well, that's our reaction when someone mentions metal scourer and air fryer in the same sentence.

Reason being is that nine times out of 10 it will take off the non-stick coating on your appliance. Because air fryers rely on hot air (and no oil), this will mean that food will inevitably stick to the basket.

Another reason not to reach for a metal sponge is that removing the non-stick coating might make your air fryer prone to rust. Not only does it look ugly, but letting water and metal mix could impact your air fryer's performance.

2. Using metal utensils to retrieve food

Yeah, no, pass. We know that pair of super shiny stainless steel tongs or fish slice looks fancy, but personally, we wouldn't risk scraping the non-stick coating for the same reasons as above. 3. Putting a wet basket back into the air fryer

If you're a guy or gal who likes to let dishes and cutlery drip dry on the drying rack — listen up. Using a tea towel to ensure your baskets are bone dry is a small step that will help your air fryer live its best life; yours too with all the tasty air fryer recipes you'll be making.

Put a damp basket back into the appliance and you might be asking for trouble. At the very least, it can affect how quickly your air fryer heats up. At worst, you risk damaging the internal components. Try explaining that to anyone with a craving for nuggets and fries!

RIP air fryer. No, really. Electricity and water don't mix, but it doesn't take a genius to figure that one out. When cleaning an air fryer, don't be tempted to hand wash it without disassembling the basket and/or tray. 1.) It's lazy 2.) It's dangerous, and 3.) You could invalidate your warranty and most instruction manuals advise against this.

Given that the cost to run an air fryer is cheaper than using your oven, you'll indirectly increase your energy bills by reverting back to your fixed cooker. Plus, if you plan to replace a broken air fryer, you'll be forking out even more — assuming you can get your hands on another, that is.

Yup, we've learned the hard way. When reviewing air fryers in our test kitchen, we made the rookie mistake of trying to cook foods consecutively. What's the worst that can happen you might ask?

Smoke, setting off fire alarms, not to mention a foul odor that left our hair smelling a bit gross too. But, the experts have also warned that not cleaning your air fryer could be a fire hazard too. This totally makes sense considering that one in five dirty ovens can cause house fires.

Though your air fryer might not burst into flames, let's be honest: eating burnt, acrid scraps isn't pleasant. Plus leaving grease and crumbs leave your components to harbor bacteria, which in turn can cause food poisoning. Gross.

Have you spent hours scrolling on TikTok for organizing ideas, and see Doom Boxes come up on your FYP? Same, bestie. The app seems to have loads of Doom Box videos RN. These all have users showcasing boxes containing random items that have been stored together because they don't have their own place in the home yet.

The term Doom Box has been gradually circulating TikTok since the latter half of 2021 and has since continued to be a popular video topic.

If you've peeped this trend and you're a li'l confused about what exactly it means, I've got you. I've spoken to an expert to get to the bottom of it...

What are Doom Boxes?

First of all, don't worry — these boxes aren't as spooky as they sound. Doom is actually an acronym, meaning Didn't Organize Only Moved. Phew.

Doom Boxes — whether created accidentally or on purpose — are a space to stash items together with the intention of organizing them later. While they may be part of an initial attempt to organize a bedroom, office, or living room, most Doom Boxes end up being used for years and years, and become the go-to storage place for old receipts, spare parts, and memorabilia.

Sounds familiar? While many of us can admit to having a Doom Box equivalent, they are actually seen as a common (and useful) tool for those organizing with ADHD. "A 'Doom Box' is a box where an ADHDer selects to host their belongings," says Katie Bowen, founder of ADHD Home TV. "People with ADHD are more likely to possess a Doom Box because they have strained executive function." She explains that this is the cognitive process responsible for essentially all self-regulation and can drastically impact one's organizational skills. 

What is the purpose of Doom Boxes?

Doom Boxes are a def quick way to remove visual clutter and tidy up a room, without having to think about where to store items on a long-term basis. "The goal of a doom box is to have stuff put away, so why would we consider the next steps if they don't feel relevant? It's amazing how an ADHDer's 'all or nothing' mindset presents on a day-to-day basis," Bowen adds.

Doom Boxes may have become more popular due to the pandemic, which saw lots of people staying at home and wanting to stash items away quickly to make everything tidier. Many of us also started working from home, creating office spaces and storing random things together to make space — so you may have created a Doom Box without knowing. 

Don't want to live with a Doom Box? Don't stress. There's plenty of other storage solutions that will keep your kitchen, living space (AKA ottomans), and desk organized AF.

Why are Doom Boxes useful?

While some of us may prefer to find a permanent home for our possessions, Doom Boxes can absolutely be a simple solution to help your space feel more calming. Sure, everything in the Doom Box might not be where other people would store it — but if you know where to look for it, then that's the most important thing. "If someone has an established system, and their system has proven to streamline and improve their lives, who are we to call it negative?" says Bowen. Amen to that.

She finishes by saying that Doom Boxes are only negative if they are causing one to overspend, feel overwhelmed, or feel confused. "As long as someone can remember the reasoning behind the boxes, and what should be in them, the Doom Boxes are working!" Love that energy. Users are uploading footage of complete room transformations under the caption ‘cleaning my depression room’, where piles of junk and clutter are cleared away into sparkling havens of tranquility.

It's no secret that a cluttered bedroom can stop us from getting a good night's sleep, but calling these spaces 'depression rooms' is a relatively new phenomenon. As well as being satisfying to watch, the TikToks where these rooms are transformed reflect an important link between our interior spaces and our mental health.

What is a depression room?

Depression rooms are rooms in the home that have become messy, unclean and chaotic because the person living there is suffering from depression and hasn't been able to take care of their space.

Kate Yiannacou, APDO Member and Founder of Tidy Happy Calm, says that the rooms in our home can be an outward reflection of our inner mental space. 'Depression can make even simple daily tasks hard to achieve – getting dressed, eating well, drinking enough water, maintaining good personal hygiene etc.

Couple that with overwhelming clutter and you’ve got even less chance of being able to put one foot in front of the other.'

Refrigerators usually appear on TikTok during cleaning and de-cluttering videos. However, the latest DIY trend has seen fridges become the canvas for stunning transformations.

When creating a kitchen, budget restrictions often mean forgoing the best fridges for aesthetic appeal and opting for a more affordable white version. However, rather than limiting your design options, TikToks are faking their way to a better-looking fridge with paint. 

Jess Maple who owns the Tiktok channel @jessmapes has the décor inspired motto: "If you can’t afford it create it."

After giving her dated dark wood kitchen cabinets a pale makeover with KLilz Chalk paint in ‘Platinum Ring’. Jess moved onto her fridge. Instead of investing in a new matching fridge, she saved money without sacrificing her decor style by painting it black too.

As searches for black kitchen ideas are on the up with many people moving toward the trend for moodier colors, this DIY refrigerator hack is a cost-effective update.

First Jess primed the fridge with Rust-Oleum Magnetic finish primer and then followed it up with Rust-Oleum chalkboard paint turning the fridge into a chalkboard.

Once the fridge had dried for a few days, the DIYer cured the surface by covering it all over with chalk for 24 hours. After rubbing off the chalk coating with a dry lint-free cloth Jess drew pretty floral patterns over it with chalk.

Jess isn't the only decorator revolutionizing refrigerators on TikTok. Interior designer @athomewithashley has gone to the other extreme with an incredible colored fridge.

However, if you do decide to try this DIY fridge hack make sure you use a primer and paint suitable for painting on metal or plastic. The last thing you want is your hard work flaking off in a few weeks' time.

Have you seen the twisted candles tutorial on TikTok? Well, fear not if you haven't because we have... many a time now and have got a step by step for you to recreate this viral craft at home. 

Trends are funny things aren’t they - there’s a sudden rush to do the ‘in’ thing and then it all disappears as quickly as it came. However, we think this twisted candle trend has longevity even if you don’t make your own. The end result is beautifully twisted candlesticks that become decorative pieces in your home.

Twisted candles – Step-by-step

2. Pick the right candles 

Invest in a pack of paraffin dinner or taper candles from Amazon, it seems that these are the best type of candles to use - we tried with others and failed miserably.

3. Soften your candle

Fill a heat-proof container with warm water, if you use boiling water it will simply melt the wax. Leave your candle to soften for between 15-20 minutes.

4. Twist your candle

Carefully remove your candle and at this stage, it should be soft enough to manipulate. You can use a rolling pin (or jam jar) to flatten it, but remember to leave at least 2 inches at the bottom unflattened so you can pop your candle in a candle holder once finished. 

Once you’ve flattened it, slowly twist the candle. You need to move quite quickly because the candle will start to harden again, if it does before you’ve finished, then place it back in the water for a few minutes.

5: allow the candle to set 

Once you’ve achieved your ‘twist’ lie your candle down flat on some kitchen roll to harden - then make as many as you like and show them off to your friends on TikTok and Instagram.

Every year, our pillows gain around a pound in weight due to dust mites, as well as gradually losing their fluffiness. A professional organizer has shared an easy trick to stop this disgustingness and help keep our best pillows clean, squishy, and supportive.

Over on TikTok, @neat.caroline has outlined how to successfully wash your pillows while keeping them plumped up. Her top tip is to put two tennis balls covered in white socks into the dryer along with the pillows, to stop the inside of the pillows from clumping together.

'It's a good idea to wash your pillow twice a year because over time it can collect a lot of dust mites, sweat, bacteria, allergens,' says Caroline. Read up on how to wash pillows here if this is brand new information.

The NYC pro organizer recommends washing two pillows at once to balance the washing machine out. If you only have one pillow that needs washing, just throw in a couple of bath towels with it.

Check the label on your pillow before you proceed, of course, but a gentle cycle with gentle detergent should be just fine. A normal cycle is to be avoided as it can cause damage to your pillow.

TikTok tennis ball pillow hack

Caroline suggests a spin cycle after washing your pillows to remove as much moisture as possible. She says to put the pillows into your dryer with two tennis balls covered with white socks. 

Alternatively, you can use wool dryer balls, available at Amazon, to stop the pillows from clumping. These soften laundry naturally as well as decreasing drying time. 

The tennis balls covered in socks will help fluff up the pillows while they're drying, so you can enjoy cloud-like pillows and peace of mind that they're properly clean.

A TikToker has shared her clever method for cleaning the inside of the microwave, and it only takes 10 minutes. The best microwave is a huge time-saver, but it can quickly become a grimy and unhygienic cave of splattered food.

Carolina McCauley's microwave cleaning hack is to place a bowl of white vinegar and dish soap into the microwave for a few minutes, before wiping down.

TikTok steam microwave cleaning hack

First, Carolina pours some white vinegar and a few pumps of dish soap into a microwaveable glass bowl. Then, in it goes for 3 minutes. 

She then waits another 2 minutes before opening the microwave, letting the steam do its thing. The cleaning enthusiast and mother of two then wipes the microwave down with a microfiber cloth, available at Amazon.

'The steam will loosen up any grime,' she says.

Carolina's TikTok on how to clean a microwave with minimal elbow grease has now had an impressive 72,000 views. One viewer said to add a slice of lemon to the bowl, while another said they'd be too scared to try it because their microwave is too powerful.

Real Homes' News Editor Rebecca Knight tried this steam microwave cleaning hack but used water and a dash of white wine vinegar, and added a few drops of lemon essential oil. She was really impressed with the results, and says her kitchen smelt great afterwards, although she thinks water on its own would do the trick.

Clare Edwards is a home economist at Smeg, the Italian home appliance manufacturer famous for its classic fridge and kettle designs. 'Another trick is to heat up a slice of lemon in a water bath which will remove odors and keep your microwave smelling fresh,' says Clare.

When it comes to how to clean a mattress, there are various routes to take. For this hack, you'll need a spray bottle handy. 

Vanesa measures out two cups of water, one cup of hydrogen peroxide, five drops of natural dish soap and five drops of some essential oils. Next, she shakes the mixture up, and sprays it directly onto the stains on her mattress, one of which is spilled coffee.

She alternates between brushing the area with a spare toothbrush and blotting it with a white towel. Eventually, the stain vanishes.

Thousands of likes and hundreds of grateful comments later, it's safe to say this trick went down well. 'Omg I NEEDED this because I spilled coffee on my mattress,' one wrote. 'I tried vinegar and water, didn't work, so gonna try this. Thank you!'

Many people had spilled coffee on their mattress, while others were inspired to give the mattress in their guest bedroom a clean having seen this natural mattress cleaning hack. In the comments, Vanesa says that the hack will most likely work on old stains as well as new ones. 

She also says that the hydrogen peroxide won't leave a stain. Hydrogen peroxide is simply water with an extra oxygen atom (H2O2), a mild antiseptic used on cuts, burns, and scrapes.

There are many, many things we'd all rather do than clean the oven. And then there's the exceedingly fiddly task of cleaning the racks. 

But these dreaded tasks simply must be faced to keep things working properly. A TikToker has shared an oven rack cleaning hack that involves dishwasher tablets and your bathtub. 

Willing to try just about anything to make things easier when it comes to how to clean oven racks, we took one for the team and gave it a go ourselves. The particular method we tried involved wrapping them in foil before submerging.

@cleanwith_kayleigh originally shared her oven rack cleaning hack in December, and the video has now 'racked up' 216,000 views. Simply fill the bath with hot water, throw in two dishwasher tabs, and submerge trays and racks for two hours.

She says if you don't have a bath, you could use a large storage container. If your oven racks rise to the top of the water, just weigh them down with shower gel or shampoo bottles.

One TikToker commented that their oven trays were totally black, but after using the trick overnight they were left shiny without any scrubbing. 'OMG genius! I am doing this tomorrow! Thank you so much,' said another.

Cleaning an oven is particularly daunting because it's not just the oven, it's the grimy trays with burnt-on grime, too. Plus you know it's going to involve some serious elbow grease. 

So, how did we get on with the hack? We tried a version that involves wrapping the trays and racks in foil, which causes a chemical reaction. This trick promises that you wouldn't need to scrub the racks clean at all. 

However, to get the worst of the bits off, I did have to scrub for quite a few minutes with my Scrub Mommy Sponge, available at Amazon. The hack worked best on the bits that had been under the foil.

To be honest, I wish I'd been a bit more careful covering all the edges, as they were a lost cause when I tried to scrub them. The other bits came off a lot easier. This seems to be due to a reaction (an ion exchange) between the aluminum foil and the dishwasher tablets. 

I would definitely recommend soaking them in a bathtub. Otherwise, I don't think I'd ever have got them that clean over a sink.

One TikToker pointed out that sun exposure will change the color of your walls over time. So this trick for choosing the perfect paint color definitely won't work for areas that have direct sun or old paint.

January is simply the best time for tidying and generally getting our ducks in a row. One TikTok user has shared a clever storage drawer hack to help us on our way to being our most organized selves in 2022.

She uses museum gel to stop her in-drawer organizers from sliding around, and her video has left us wanting to try out this organization idea for ourselves. 

In the clip below, @neatmethod demonstrates how when she opens her kitchen drawer, the plastic dividers holding stationery all slide around. So she scoops out a small amount of clear museum gel, designed for securing glass and crystal in place and often used in museums for holding things in place discreetly.  

@neatmehtod then molds the gel into small balls like you would with blue tac for putting up a poster on the wall, and attaches them to the bottom corners of the containers. She presses the gel down firmly onto the bottom of the kitchen drawer and that's it!
