Karina explains, “Utilize the triangular space under stairs with pull-out drawers. These are versatile and can be customized for various items, from shoes to seasonal items.”

“The biggest mistake you can make in any small space is trying to force larger pieces to fit where they don't make sense,” says Kathy Kuo, interior designer and CEO of Kathy Kuo Home.

"It's this dark space where stuff gets shoved and forgotten about — it's a doom corner," she says. "It's clutter, paper, and random stuff [people] don't want to deal with."

While you're at it, she suggests investing in thin hangers. You'd be surprised how much real estate you're wasting with the bulky, old-school ones.

Vertical space, in particular, is a good thing to make the most of, according to Aleks Grigoriev, CEO and co-founder of Priority Home Buyers. He suggests "installing wall hooks or a wall-mounted coat rack" if you can to take your belongings from off the floor and any benches or tables.

Another clever option for storing hats is adding floating shelves to your entryway. "These can be installed above a coat rack or hooks, providing a designated spot for your hats while also freeing up floor space," says Grigoriev. What to use

Hanging garment racks could be a great way for keeping all your hanging clothes together. Find one with wheels so you could push the rack aside when you need to maximize the space and incorporate some shelves that you can add baskets or bins to store shoes or handbags. 

If you are lucky enough to have a closet but it’s small, add tension rods to use all the vertical space and hang items higher that you don’t wear as often or are seasonal. Again, Mitchell suggests baskets, as they are so versatile in adding storage. Use baskets for hats, handbags, belts, socks, and more. Add them to a wall shelf to keep them out of the way or at the top of a closet. They double as decor! 

Create Hidden Storage 

The smallest organizational item can make a big difference in helping keep a space functional. 

What to use

Try an adhesive paper towel holder on the inside of your under-the-sink cabinet to store your paper towels and keep your counters clear. Also, add Command strip hooks to the inside of your cabinets to hang kitchen utensils such as measuring cups and spoons.

It goes without saying, but you'll want to make sure those floral skirts and lightweight blouses are easily retrievable when it gets warm. According to Prominski, there is a proper way to keep everything in check. 

"Hang as many tops and dresses as possible, because they will be easier to see and are less likely to get wrinkled; using slim hangers also makes a big difference," she says. "If you must store your t-shirts in a drawer, roll them, or use the filing method so that you can easily see everything."

Should you have closet space at the ready, Prominski recommends using hangers with clips for shorts and pants. If not, they can be rolled in the drawers alongside bathing suits and fitness 'fits, but watch the way in which you keep everything.  

"Since summer clothes are so much lighter, they often need a little more support," Prominski says. "Use drawer dividers to help containerize categories of like-items. In the closet, hang things according to length, so that you can maximize the space underneath what is being stored."

During the off-season

If you are an apartment dweller who needs to switch out her wardrobe seasonally, we're right there with you. Luckily, we've got small space storage ideas on lock. When it comes time to part ways with those maxi dresses and shorts (perish the thought) you'll want to make the transition to cozy items as seamless as possible with the proper accessories.

"Vacuum-sealed space-saver bags are a popular choice because they take up less space, but they will often leave the clothes very wrinkled," Prominski says. "Instead, I recommend using under-the-bed boxes or zippered cloth bags."

You can do either or, perhaps even a combination of the two depending on how much space you have to work with. Either way, you're going to want to make sure you label your goods, use a desiccant to prevent moisture, and thoroughly wash and dry your clothes before bidding them adieu.

Wardrobe DIYs

Regardless of what the calendar says, it's always a good time for a DIY. A few simple tweaks to the wardrobe department can go a long way, according to Prominski. 

"I am a fan of removing closet doors, especially if they’re the ones that slide open because it makes it so much harder to see what’s in the closet," she says. "Adding a light is another great way to create the perception of added space."

So, when it came to storing my stuff, I had to get a little creative — as well as become more of a minimalist and get rid of anything that I didn’t need.

1. Use a pegboard for storage 

Got a large(ish) wall free? A great hack for adding extra storage is to hang a pegboard — like this one from Amazon — and use the pegs for storage. FYI, this trick works seriously well in kitchens and can be used to hang cooking utensils, mugs, or even (if it’s fitted properly) pots and pans. For a slimline pegboard, this design from Amazon works perfectly. 

2. Install high shelves 

Lack the space to put up shelves in the middle of the wall? Why not hang them up high instead? For extra storage, install shelves — like these floating shelves from Amazon — around the edge of the room just below the ceiling and above the door. Honestly, this neat little hack will add a serious amount of storage space to your home. 

3. Opt for slimline furniture 

If your apartment lacks room for chunkier pieces of furniture, opt for slimline versions instead. Whether it’s a nightstand you need or a TV cabinet, opt for smaller-sized designs that offer adequate storage but won’t overtake the space. 

4. Utilize hooks

It might sound kinda basic but, honestly, it can make a serious difference to the look and feel of your space. Some well-placed hooks can make a big difference in terms of storage. Most hooks — like these heavy-duty hooks from Amazon — are easy to drill in. If you don’t fancy making holes in the wall, or your landlord won’t allow it, there are plenty of self-adhesive hooks to choose from, like these matte black hooks from Amazon.  Alternatively, you could opt for over-door hooks. 

5. Choose multi-purpose storage furniture 

A super easy way to add extra storage space to a smaller apartment is by opting for multi-purpose furniture that doubles as storage. Honestly, this hack is a game-changer. Back when I was in my first apartment, I swapped out most of my old furniture for alternatives that offered additional storage and it was so helpful. I switched out my sofa for this sectional couch from Ikea with a huge storage area underneath. I also purchased a couple of storage ottomans to add even more options. 

6. Opt for over-door storage 

A quick (and cheap) way to add extra storage to a smaller space is to use over-door storage. Hanging over-the-door organizers provide make use of an often over-looked spot, plus you can just shut the door to keep them out of sight. Use one in the bedroom to store your shoes or one in the kitchen to store small snacks and ingredients.

1. Try out wall shelving

When you have no room horizontally, you’ve got to look vertically. Using wall space is an easy way to add storage to your room, without having to buy any massive pieces of furniture. @nest_number_9 has put art prints and plants on hers which look really pretty, but you could always place books and photo frames on yours too. If you aren’t sure if you can hang wall shelving, just double check with your landlord if you’re all good to install them.

2. Hold your purses

Some people are shoe people, some people are jewelry people. Me? I’m a bag gal. I have a bajillion different purses, and struggle to organize them all properly. I love how @inlineorganizing has used acrylic holders to divide up her purses, which make them look part of the decor. They also fit really neatly into smaller shelving units. So basically, no more scrambling around trying to find that bag you need to go with your outfit. 

3. Go for a nightstand with drawers

By using these as a nightstand, you can store larger items like shoes, plants, and books on the lower layer, and then use the top layer for any nightstand essentials. 5. Store smaller items with dividers  

I find that smaller items get lost really easily when living in a small space, and can make the space super untidy if they aren’t stored properly too. Luckily, I’ve got the solution: Drawer organizers and dividers. With these, you can clearly see what you have, without them cluttering up your drawers and taking up space being piled up. I’m obsessed with how @riorganize has used these to display her jewelry, which looks amazingly aesthetic. They can also be used for socks and undies too, BTW.

6. Bag a tall shelf (or two)

Whether you have gorgeous decor like @moveovermagnolia that needs to shine or have garments that need a home, tall shelving units with lots of little shelves are perfect for creating a big amount of storage in smaller spaces. She has cleverly placed her two shelving units together to complement each other, but by having two small ones rather than one big one, she’s also given herself the option to move them around in future. This is especially useful to do if you know you’re gonna be moving eventually, or if you just like switching up your bedroom layout every now and then.

7. Spin 'round makeup and toiletries

I always do my makeup in my bedroom, which means I like to keep all my pieces in one place there. That being said, they do take up a load of room. Lazy Susans and spinning makeup organizers are smart ways to store them, as you can keep them all contained in one zone, rather than having them spread out all over the table or room. From here, you can then move them around easily to find what you want. These also work well for keeping toiletries tidy in your room too (AKA if you have a shared bathroom and don’t want anyone using your Olaplex).  

8. Look for beds with built-in storage 

Let’s face it — beds take up a hell of a lot of space in the bedroom. Now, I’m not saying to use a clothes rack as your number one clothes storage option. But hanging up your clothes is a much better option than dumping all your clothes on the floor because you know you’re gonna wear them again soon (I’m so guilty of this, TBH). Clothes racks are also a fab option for storing chunky coats and jackets that don’t quite fit in the wardrobe, as well as organizing outfits for the week. Stylish and functional? Yes please.

10. Make the most out of accent chairs

This one is a li’l random, but the logic absolutely makes sense. If you have a really teeny bedroom that doesn’t have space for extra shelving units, you can pop storage crates and boxes onto your accent chair instead.
