I've spotted the Scandinavian sleep method all over my TikTok feed, and I think it looks like the perfect solution to my partner's and my nighttime squabbles.

Whether you've seen this method on TikTok too or are just intrigued by the name, I've got you covered with all the info you need to know. It's essentially just having your own separate duvet even if you're sharing a bed, which can help control temperature and therefore improve sleep. I've asked sleep pros for the pros and cons, plus rounded up our top comforters.

This sleep method has a Scandi-style name and, just like the design method, it’s actually very simple and breezy.

“The Scandinavian sleep method is all about partners sharing a bed but having their own separate duvets,” explains Marion Crittendon, sleep and respiratory care expert at Order Your Supplies.

“It stops couples having fights over the sheets or getting woken up by someone's midnight acrobatics,” she adds.

Essentially it's like having your own sleep fortress, tailored to your exact liking.

Impact on physical contact

One potential downside that Dr. Sham has noticed is that using separate bedding may reduce opportunities for physical closeness and intimacy during sleep.

“Physical contact like cuddling or holding hands while sleeping can enhance feelings of intimacy, comfort, and emotional connection between partners,” he explains.

“When each partner has their own set of blankets or duvets, there might be less spontaneous physical touch during the night,” he adds.

This may lead to a perceived decrease in intimacy over time, which you might not want if you’re sharing your bed with someone you really love.

Financial cost

If you’re looking for budget-friendly bedroom ideas, investing in double the duvet might not be the best thing for you.

Marion explains, “Using separate bedding can be a tad more expensive, and managing multiple duvets may complicate bed-making.”

Maintaining these can also come at a cost, as if you have to load multiple duvet covers into your washing machines, this may increase your electricity bill.

The Scandinavian sleep method is basically all about personalizing your sleep space for maximum Zs.

“It's not your traditional bedtime setup, but hey, who wants to be traditional when you can be well-rested?” Marion finishes by saying.

Heatwaves, like the recent one that sent UK thermometers soaring to 89° Fahrenheit, had social media users commenting the heat here was worse than Louisiana or Italy in the height of summer.

My home is also a typical newly-built UK one, packed with features to keep the heat inside because most of the time, that's what we need on this little gray, cold island. In the summer or during heatwaves, it's just awful.

Why I love the Pelonis tower fan

What a fabulous purchase the budget-friendly this tower fan has turned out to be. First and foremost, it's cheap! Even without Amazon's current near 20% discount, the 40-inch oscillating Pelonis tower fan usually retails in the US at $69.99, and in the UK for £75.99.

It's quiet too, unless it's on fan speed 3 (the highest) but I sleep with earplugs anyway. But if you don't have earplugs, no bother — it has a quiet mode and, overnight, fan speed 2 gives enough blast, no matter the heat.

I love the remote control, which means the chronic pain I endure as a result of connective tissue disorder Ehlers-Danlos syndrome doesn't get twinged by me having to get up to tweak the settings overnight. It's also lightweight enough for me to move around despite my manual grip issues and pain.

The timer option is super too, as my nervous system issue often sees me grow uncontrollably cold or hot without warning. Using my Pelonis tower fan's programmable timer is also a great way to protect the environment by reducing energy consumption when I am fast asleep, and reduces the overall cost of running a fan, too.

The one thing I don't like about the Pelonis tower fan

The only thing I don't rate about the fan is the varying sound levels when it's on eco mode. It intermittently blows loudly, then quieter, then louder and back around in an endless intrusive circuit. The variation in decibels makes it harder to ignore or tune out.

I tested my fan's sound levels on the Decibel X app for iPhone, by placing my phone on my pillow, and placing the fan three feet from the foot of my bed, on oscillation mode, exactly as I would at night, and the results were:

So you see, it's not much noise either way and if you don't like the varying noise on quiet mode like me, there there is an easy solution: just don't use that mode! I never do and I do not miss it in the slightest, usually running it on fan speed 2 overnight.

It's wonderfully cooling, and though it doesn't have air cooling technology, when you put your hand in front of it, the blast of air genuinely feels cool enough for relief from heat.

It also has a 15-hour programmable timer, 90 degree silent oscillation, and LED light on top to help you see its functions at night.

What I thought of the WinkBed Plus mattress

I would highly recommend the WinkBed Plus mattress. The firmest and thickest in the WinkBed line, it offers incredible support without being too stiff, and its hybrid design will prove a lot more durable than many rival brands.

When you're plus size, it can be tricky to find a mattress that suits your specific needs. For a start, you'll need a more durable mattress that can handle a heavier weight over time, and materials such a memory foam will be likely to wear a lot faster. 

This is why a lot of modern mattress companies include a weight limit in their warranties, and while that doesn't mean it won't be suitable for plus size people, it does mean the mattress wasn't created with us in mind.

Although, the bounciness of the WinkBed Plus did lead to a slight lack in edge support and more motion transfer than myself and my partner were used to, we love how supportive and comfortable this mattress has proven. It has made our bedroom feel like a luxury hotel.

The WinkBed Plus cardboard box arrived a little bashed up, but the mattress itself was fully intact inside. It is wrapped and vacuum sealed in airtight plastic, which made it a lot easier to carry upstairs into the bedroom despite how heavy it was. It took two of us to drag it upstairs, but once we had unrolled it and put it on top of the base it was very easy to cut it out of the plastic and start to off-gas. 

The advice is to let this mattress fully off-gas and re-inflate for 24-48 hours, but it was at full height and at the full 13.5 inch thickness after just an hour or so. I was really happy that there was no noticeable smell, because many of even best mattresses in a box give off a strong chemical odor from the manufacturing process when inflating. 

I was first struck by how large this mattress was in comparison to my last mattress. At 13.5 inches deep, my regular favorite bed sheets were too shallow to fit, so I have since had to buy extra-deep sheets (we recommend Amazon's Choice highly rated Empyrean deep bedding) to prevent the edges slipping away from the mattress in the night. 

The vast majority of the mattress' construction is thick, individually wrapped pocketed coils. These are designed to offer more support at the edges using WinkBeds' extra-edge support system. This is topped with a pillowy layer that features a cooling, gel-infused foam. 

As larger people can struggle with overheating in the night, it was particularly important to me that I found a mattress that wouldn't absorb my body heat and instead feature ventilation to keep me cool as I slept. Is the WinkBed Plus mattress comfortable?

Having slept on this mattress for nearly a month now, I can attest that it's incredibly comfortable. I'm a side sleeper, as is my partner, and I've struggled with lower back pain for the last few years. Sometimes my back can hurt when I sleep on a mattress that's too soft for me, but I also find extra-firm mattresses uncomfortable on my hips when I toss and turn in the night. 

The WinkBed Plus doesn't sink under my weight like a memory foam mattress would, so if you're on the lighter side, you may find that it won't contour to the shape of your body. Instead, at the target weight for this product, it gives a bouyant feeling throughout the night while keeping my spine aligned. I haven't had any back pain since sleeping on the WinkBed Plus, and my partner, who sometimes struggles with sore joints, also noticed a reduction in pain after a few weeks on this mattress. 

To show how firm this mattress is, I placed a 12-lb weight on the center and the edge of the WinkBed Plus. The mattress did not visibly sink under the weight of the mattress. Instead, the gel top cushioned the weight while the spring base kept the mattress from sagging. 

The support was just as impressive at the edge of the mattress as it was in the center. The issue I had with the side support on this mattress came not when I was lying flat, but when I swung my legs out of bed in the morning and sat on the edge of my bed. When I did this, the springs sank noticeably and I did not feel as supported as I was used to feeling on my older, less spring-based mattress.

The bounciness of this mattress made it feel luxurious both to look at, and to sleep on. It reminded me of some of the more high-end hotel beds I've slept on. However, this bounciness did mean the WinkBed Plus has more motion transfer than I'm used to. 

Memory foam mattresses absorb a lot of the movement you make in the night, which means you and your partner are able to sleep independently without worrying about being woken up by each other's tossing and turning. 

In contrast, this spring-based mattress did transfer movement when my partner, or more likely I, switched sides in the night. It took him a few nights to get used to this, and although it's not disrupted our sleep at all it could be a downside for light sleepers.

Is the WinkBed Plus mattress breathable and cool?

The breathability is where the WinkBed Plus really stands apart from my old memory foam mattress. Like many plus-size people, I run a little hotter than the average body temperature, and I'm more prone to overheating in the night when it's hot out. 

This means I need a mattress that will dissipate my body heat as opposed to absorbing and holding it, and memory foam can be quite bad at doing this. Spring-based mattresses, by contrast, create the space needed to dissipate your body heat.

Combined with the gel topper on the WinkBed Plus, I found it to be a cooling and comfortable mattress in the spring month I tested it, and I will continue to test this as summer approaches.

What I thought of the Turmerry organic latex mattress

 I thought that the Turmerry organic latex mattress was very comfortable and offered excellent pressure point prevention, even without one of the best mattress toppers. 

While it didn’t offer enough support for my personal sleeping habits, I think it would work well for many people who prefer a softer mattress. The mattress arrives as four separate layers, which is helpful because each layer weighs 23 pounds. Once assembled, it’s heavy and difficult to move, but it also securely stays in place and features a soft and well-designed cover.

The mattress’ eco-friendly manufacturing is also appealing. It’s crafted with organically grown latex and holds numerous certifications indicating its safety. Additionally, Turmerry plants a tree for every mattress ordered.

Unboxing and setting up the Turmerry organic latex mattress

This mattress in a box arrived in three plain cardboard boxes, all of which were in excellent shape, but were surprisingly heavy, weighing over 40 pounds each. 

I tested the Twin 12-inch mattress, which is shipped as four foam layers plus a pillow and the mattress cover. Each mattress layer weighs about 23 pounds and is shipped compressed and wrapped in many layers of plastic and clear packing tape. There were no packing materials within the box, but the mattress layers were packed tightly and didn’t seem to have shifted. 

Additionally, there were no instructions included with the mattress. I was able to look them up on the Turmerry website, but having printed instructions to refer to during the assembly process would have been nice. Assembling the mattress took me half an hour.

The mattress cover is well-designed. It features layers of cotton and wool that give it a quality, strong feel, but it’s also very soft. The cover unzips completely, so I was able to insert the mattress layers into it surprisingly easily.

Closing the cover takes some patience, but again, the process went more smoothly than I thought it would. The top of the cover features a four-inch interior liner that you pull down to keep the zipper from snagging on the latex layers.

That said, once I had the mattress assembled, it weighed about 92 pounds. It was very difficult to adjust it on my bed. The mattress has a very soft and flexible feel, and is so heavy that I was actually starting to pull my bed frame across the floor as I moved the mattress. It would greatly benefit from a handle or two in the cover, which I think would give more grip and make it easier to move. 

The mattress also included a latex pillow. It was already in a zippered cover, so once I added a pillowcase, it was ready for use. 

While assembling the mattress, I noticed a moderate odor. This wasn’t a chemical odor but is what I would describe as reminiscent of rubber. I’m sensitive to smells, but it wasn’t enough to bother me, and I was able to sleep on the mattress the same night I unboxed it. The odor gradually dissipated over the course of a week, and by the seventh day, I could barely notice it.

Is the Turmerry organic latex mattress comfortable?

This organic mattress is labeled as medium firmness but it felt very soft to me. The mattress doesn’t offer a lot in terms of support, especially when compared to the feeling of a medium firmness hybrid or innerspring mattress. Given that I have some back issues, I don’t think that I could sleep comfortably on it long-term. However, anyone who prefers a softer mattress or who doesn’t necessarily depend on that support might love this mattress. 

I did notice that the mattress is excellent in preventing pressure points, and I felt none of the pressure that I often notice around my ankles, hips, or shoulders when sleeping on my side. I was able to turn over and onto my back easily during the night, and while I found that my hips dipped down a little more than is comfortable while sleeping on my back, it’s important to note that many sleepers would find this to be extra comfortable. 

The mattress does have a bouncy feel. I found that motion transfer occurred from about 30 inches away, so this may not be the best choice for couples who are light sleepers. I was able to feel my cat jump up onto and walk around on the mattress. 

In addition to not being terribly supportive, I found that the mattress significantly lacked edge support. When I sat or even pressed down with my hand on the edge of the mattress, it compressed to about half of its height. As a result, this mattress would not be an ideal choice for anyone who depends on being able to push against the edges for support when getting out of bed.

The pillow compressed easily and didn’t provide much in terms of support or height. I prefer very thin pillows, so I found this ideal. Anyone who likes a plush, supportive pillow will likely find this one too thin and too soft.

While I tested the mattress during the winter, I didn’t notice any additional heat buildup. All four layers feature generously sized perforations that go through the entire layer. Those perforations allow for increased air circulation.

Additionally, you should rotate the mattress from head to toe every few months. 

Turmerry notes that you can spot clean liquid spills with a mix of white distilled vinegar and water, then sprinkle baking soda over the mattress and let it rest in a ventilated area. After eight hours, you should vacuum up the baking soda and let the mattress completely dry.

It’s excellent at helping to prevent pressure points, and I can see both back and side sleepers appreciating that quality. While the mattress is very comfortable, its lack of edge support means it’s not well-suited to anyone who depends on pushing off the mattress edge when getting out of bed. 

Since the mattress is very heavy, plan to have a couple of people to help with setup, especially if working with a Queen or King size. That weight does offer the benefit of helping to keep the mattress securely in place, but maneuvering it on the bed is difficult. However, this is a versatile mattress that can be used not only with traditional box springs but also with adjustable beds, so it can work with a variety of setups. 

The fact that the mattress is made of organic materials, including organic latex, cotton, and wool, is highly appealing. I imagine it would be a great choice for many people who are health-conscious and looking to avoid their exposure to chemicals.

What I thought of the Turmerry latex mattress topper

I found the Turmerry latex mattress topper to be highly comfortable and very effective in preventing pressure points. I was able to comfortably sleep on my side and back with no noticeable extra heat buildup. While the topper weighs 30 pounds and was difficult to get into place by myself, those qualities also helped to keep it securely in place, solving the shifting problem that is so common with other types of mattress toppers. 

Knowing that this topper is an eco-friendly product makes me appreciate it even more. It’s crafted from latex from organically grown rubber trees in Sri Lanka, and Turmerry advertises that it plants a tree in your name for every order.

Setting up the Turmerry latex mattress topper

The Turmerry Latex Mattress Topper arrived in a single, plain cardboard box. Since the Queen three-inch topper weighs 30 lbs, the box was awkward and heavy to carry. The topper was tightly wrapped in multiple layers of plastic, and the plastic was then covered in clear packing tape. The box and topper were in excellent condition when they arrived. 

There were no instructions in the box, so I placed the wrapped topper on my bed and tried to use scissors to open the packaging. This was difficult, as the topper was tightly compressed, and there were several layers of tape to cut through. I never found a point where I could pull all of the tape off and then just unwrap the packaging, so I had to cut the entire wrapping off. 

Once unwrapped, I tried to position the topper on my bed, which was also a challenge. The topper has a texture that’s very sticky and grippy against any sort of fabric, so moving and sliding it is a two-person job. I did get the topper into place and was pleased to see that it’s generously sized. Whereas other toppers that I’ve tested have often been a couple of inches too short for my mattress, this topper hung about two inches off of both ends of the mattress. 

After being unwrapped, the topper immediately expanded to its full height, unlike memory foam toppers, which gradually expanded over hours after unwrapping. 

There was a moderate off-gassing smell, but it wasn’t particularly unpleasant. Honestly, I thought it smelled a bit like cookie dough. The smell dissipated quickly, and within two hours I couldn’t smell it when I walked into the room. 

I could smell the odor for the first week while sleeping on the topper, but it was faint and didn’t bother me.

Test 1: Firmness and support

I tried the three inch medium firmness topper and found it to be very comfortable, both when sleeping on my side and on my back. I immediately noticed that the topper does an excellent job of relieving pressure points, especially on my knees, ankles, and hips while sleeping on my side. 

While the topper has a soft and cushioned feel to it, I was able to easily roll over onto my back without feeling like I was restricted or sinking in too deeply. According to Turmerry, the topper is constructed with five zones to support the different areas of your body. I can’t necessarily feel a difference in the zones, but I would say that this topper is more supportive than others that I’ve tried, like the Allswell 4” Memory Foam Mattress Topper I reviewed.

Test 2: Motion tranfer

The topper also helps to prevent motion transfer. It’s supportive enough to keep a glass of water upright. I pressed down on multiple points of the topper and didn’t manage to vibrate the water in the glass until I was about 14 inches from the glass. 

That ability to prevent motion transfer would make this topper excellent for couples or people who sleep with their pets in bed. My cats often join me in bed and I wasn’t able to feel or hear them walking unless they were right beside me. 

Test 3: Edge support

While the topper does have a supportive feel to it, it doesn’t offer much in terms of edge support. I can fully compress the edge of the topper with my hand, so it may not be an ideal option for anyone who has difficulty getting out of bed and who relies on pressing on the bed’s edges to lift themselves. 

However, since the topper has a sticky feel to it and grips fabric, I was pleased to find that no matter how much I tried to shift around on the side, I wasn’t able to slide it off the bed, even slightly. I often find that keeping toppers in place is tricky, and they tend to shift around. That’s not the case with this one.  

Test 4: Breathability and coolness

This cooling mattress topper features many quarter-inch perforations that travel through to both sides. I didn’t feel that it was any warmer than my regular mattress. I did test it during the winter, but since the topper is supportive and I didn’t sink deeply down into it, I found it to be fairly breathable.

What to consider when choosing a pillow

Follow these five simple steps to find the very best pillow for you, because finding the best match for your needs is essential to sleeping well. You can find more helpful details in our guide to choosing a pillow.

1. How do you sleep?
Side sleepers will need a plump, softer pillow: think cushy fill or softer memory foam. Stomach sleepers will need firmer, thinner pillows to hold their necks in perfect alignment. Back sleepers can find comfort on both sides of the spectrum with a medium-soft or medium-firm pillow or even foam pillows that align with the contours of their necks.

Think about where your pillow will sit beneath your head while you sleep. If you prefer having it fully beneath your head, you'll have the best success with a low- or medium-loft pillow. If you sleep with your pillow only partially beneath your head, you may want a pillow with a higher loft to feel supported.

2. How thick do you like your pillow?
This is called pillow loft, and you might see it written on the side of the packaging. Experiment at home to get your preferred thickness right. Low-loft pillows are around three inches thick, medium-loft pillows are three to five inches thick, and high-loft pillows are at least five inches thick.

3. It's what's on the inside that counts
Natural fillings, which include duck and goose feathers and down, feel soft and luxurious, giving you that extra-cozy sensation of sinking into your pillow. They, along with sheep’s wool, are naturally heat-retaining, which makes them ideal if you get chilly at night. However, both options may need regular fluffing to maintain their loft. These aren't great for anyone who's in constant pursuit of the cool side of the pillow, though. Nor suitable for those who adopt a vegan lifestyle. For an eco-friendly, non-animal-based option, consider fillings such as cotton, buckwheat hull, Kapok seed pod, and bamboo.

If you like the softness of the down but not the heat, or you suffer from allergies or respiratory conditions, you can get synthetic fiber or gel fillings that mimic the feel. Speaking of allergies, pillow manufacturers are very much up to speed with the needs of their users these days, so you can expect to find anti-allergy fillings and coverings for a reasonable price.

For those of us who need more support in bed or just prefer the feel of a firm pillow, there are latex and memory foam to consider. Helpful for sufferers of neck or back pain, they keep the spine and muscles correctly elevated and aligned for deep sleep and a pain-free morning. However, these may have a strong odor, which will disappear once it's had time to 'air' out. On the contrary, if moldability is a priority for you (for example, if you like to fold your pillow in half), then consider a shredded pillow filling.

Usually, most experts would recommend replacing your pillows after two years, unless they have become visibly worn before then. So buying a new pillow ensures you are sleeping on something supportive and clean, which is especially important if you suffer from allergies. Unfortunately, some covers and fill materials will degrade quicker than others so be sure to fluff your pillows regularly, and spot-check them for any wear and tear.

4. Good to know
Some of us prefer to sleep with two pillows (even though sleep experts recommend sleeping with one). Depending on whether you're team one or two — or maybe even three! — consider carefully which one you want to be your top pillow and how deep your pillow will be. Also, if you sleep next to a partner, what you find comfortable might not work for your other half. Your pillow choices can and should be entirely independent. Stomach sleepers might even benefit from sleeping without a pillow.

While not directly connected to comfort, here are some other things to consider:

How easy is it to source a sham? Some pillows (especially those that are aimed at those with back or neck pain), aren't made to fit conventional cases. If you're someone who likes their bedding accessories to coordinate, this may be an issue.

Can you wash pillows in the washing machine? The good news is that some pillows are so low-maintenance and don't need to be thrown in the washer (only their outer covers do). As a back sleeper, our contributing editor, Rose Cain, commended the Parachute mattress topper. It's marshmallowy-soft, filled with hypoallergenic, vegan-friendly fill (ideal for people who with allergies or asthma), and has a lightweight and breathable cotton sateen shell. 

Though it might appear squishy, this topper will mask all of the sins of an old rental mattress. Unlike some of the other cooling mattresses in this guide — this bed accessory won't budge, thanks to its baffle box construction that helps the insides stay put. Because of this, it doesn't come with elastic straps.

Rose tested this cooling mattress topper in the peak of a 100°F Texan summer, so we're convinced if it will work in extreme weather, it should be fit for purpose in milder conditions.

If you're looking for a deep mattress topper that's cooling and organic — then stop your search. Along with your organic mattress (if you have one), this topper will keep you cool all night long. If you have a mattress that's too firm for you, this is a great buy. 

Our tester Louise used it on her landlord-provided mattress. She's a side sleeper and usually prefers a firmer base, but she noticed that it made her medium-firm mattress feel a lot softer and fresher.

The blend of cross-cut memory foam and microfiber offers superior breathability (versus solid or shredded memory foam toppers) albeit a little lumpy on the first couple of nights. But once the foam has molded to your body it'll feel like sleeping on a cloud.

What I thought of the TEMPUR-Adapt mattress topper

Straight out of the box, the TEMPUR-Adapt mattress topper had a high-quality feel. It was easy to unbox, had minimal off-gassing (that smell when something is new), and I was able to use it the same night I unboxed it. The elastic corner straps kept it secure, and it fitted my mattress well. 

The topper made the bed more comfortable (without buying a new mattress), and I noticed that it greatly reduced pressure points. Though it was very comfortable, it also provided enough support and I didn’t feel it was sinking. I found no noticeable increase in heat, and the topper was altogether an improvement to my mattress. 

Though it’s not ideal for use with taller mattresses, and probably isn’t a great fit for sleepers who prefer a firmer bed, it could be a great choice for those who prefer a softer feel.

Unboxing and setting up the TEMPUR-Adapt mattress topper

The TEMPUR-Adapt mattress topper was shipped in a durable, heavy-duty single box and arrived in excellent shape. The topper was tightly wrapped in plastic and enclosed in a larger plastic bag within the box. It was surprisingly heavy — but once out of the box, it was much easier to carry. 

I immediately noticed there was no instruction manual, but then discovered that the three-step unboxing instructions were printed on a box flap. That design eliminates the need to include any sort of instruction sheet, cutting down on paper waste. 

After removing the topper from the larger plastic bag, I placed it on my mattress. I was able to find the ends of the plastic wrap and easily unwrapped it by rolling the topper. 

Once unwrapped, the topper immediately started to expand. While it was less than an inch thick after unwrapping, within five minutes it had reached its full three-inch height.

The instructions note  the topper can be used the same night it’s unboxed, but may continue to expand over the following 24 hours. I didn’t notice any further expansion after the first few minutes. 

The four elastic corner straps are very easy to use and slipped over a mattress. My mattress is 10 inches high and the straps fit securely. According to TEMPUR-Pedic, the straps fit mattresses up to 13 inches deep, but they wouldn’t fit many of the deeper mattresses that have recently become popular. I found that the topper fits my twin bed very well, with no overhang and no lack of coverage. 

After unwrapping the topper, I could smell a somewhat faint plastic or chemical off-gassing odor. I’m very sensitive to smells and this odor was minimal, especially compared to other toppers and mattresses that I’ve purchased. I unwrapped the topper at 1PM and was able to comfortably sleep on it that night without really noticing the smell. Within 24 hours, the smell had entirely dissipated. 

Using the TEMPUR-Adapt mattress topper

This topper offers a fantastic feel and made a significant improvement in the comfort and support of my mattress. It’s made of TEMPUR-Material™, which is the same material that TEMPUR-PEDIC uses in its mattresses. The material helps to relieve pressure but isn’t so soft that I had any difficulty moving. I found it comfortable to lie on my side, my back, and my stomach, and I could easily move from one position to another. 

The topper also offers decent support. While it’s cushioned, you don’t sink deeply into it, which helps to avoid heat buildup. I felt balanced and comfortable when sleeping on the topper, though I would like to have more support under my legs. I tend to prefer a medium-soft mattress, and while I find the topper comfortable, I could see it being too soft for someone who prefers a medium-firm, or firm mattress. 

I did experience an issue with getting out of bed. My mattress lacks edge support, and adding the topper seemed to make those edges even softer. Since the topper easily compressed under my legs, I felt like I was tipping forward every time I went to get out of bed. That could potentially be an issue for someone who already has difficulty getting out of bed. 

I found that the corner straps securely held the topper in place, and I didn’t have any issues with it shifting. The topper may not be a great fit for taller mattresses, since it adds three inches of height. But it does have the potential to transform a rental mattress.

My bed sheets easily fit over the topper and mattress, but this might be an issue for those with taller mattresses. 

While I didn’t find the topper to be particularly warm, I tested it during the winter, and several reviewers described it as being hot and too soft. It’s great at preventing motion transfer, so it would be ideal for couples who want to prevent sleep disturbances. 

A premium cooling mattress topper is available, but that option is more expensive. However, an $80 upgrade for TEMPUR-Adapt mattress topper with cooling technology might be life-changing for a menopausal woman, a hot sleeper or for someone whose partner gives off heat like a radiator at night.

I tested this twin mattress topper for two weeks. During that time, I didn’t notice an improvement in my chronic back pain, but I was absolutely more comfortable when I got into bed and seemed to be able to fall asleep more easily. 

Cleaning and maintaning the TEMPUR-Adapt Topper

Cleaning the mattress topper is simple as it features a zippered cover that can be completely removed. According to Tempur-Pedic, you can wash the cover in cold water but should avoid using chlorine-based cleaning supplies or harsh chemicals. Air drying is recommended, but you can also machine dry the cover, using your washer-dryer on the cool setting. The topper core cannot be washed or dry cleaned. 

Is the TEMPUR-Adapt mattress topper right for you?

The TEMPUR-Adapt mattress topper can add cushion and some support to mattresses. Its ability to prevent motion transfer makes it ideal for couples, and its excellent pressure relief is ideal for anyone who tends to experience pressure points or discomfort while lying on their mattress. 

That said, this topper is on the softer side, so anyone who likes a firmer mattress might find it to be too soft. While it does provide support and prevents you from sinking completely down into it, it made the edges of my mattress feel less supportive, so some people might have a difficult time getting into and out of bed. 

I have to draw attention to the topper’s 10-year limited warranty, which is a fantastic perk and far longer than most industry warranties. This topper is a great choice for anyone who prefers softer mattresses and who wants to increase the comfort of their mattress. Its corner straps only fit mattresses up to 13” high, so keep that in mind when deciding if this topper is the right fit for your mattress.

How we test mattress toppers

TEMPUR-Pedic sent me the topper and I tested it for two weeks in my house before writing the review. I used the following criteria for the testing process. You may consider the following when wondering how to choose a mattress topper: 

Unboxing: I considered how well the topper was packaged, including the use of sustainable packaging. 

Comfort: I evaluated the topper’s comfort, including how it felt throughout the night. I considered how the comfort and cushion would work for people with different sleeping position preferences, as well as how it affected the ability to move in bed. 

Support: I looked for a topper that was not only comfortable, but was supportive enough to prevent sleepers from completely sinking into it. I considered how it affected the edge support of the mattress. 

Heat: I evaluated whether the topper contributed to heat buildup during the night and considered how breathable it felt. 

Ease of use: I considered factors like how easily I could get into and out of bed, as well as how well the topper stayed in place on my mattress. 

Ease of cleaning: I assessed how easily the topper could be cleaned, including any specific cleaning instructions provided by the manufacturer. 

You may have heard the Helix Midnight Mattress from the brand's social media campaigns and work with content creators. What I thought of the Helix Midnight Mattress

This is the best mattress for stomach sleepers, in my opinion. It has everything you need if you're looking for the Goldilocks of mattresses — not too soft, not too hard. As a stomach sleeper, I found it to be incredibly comfortable with some decent support. The hybrid build of memory foam and gentle springs is a great crowdpleaser. It's squishy but with some extra bounce so you don't feel like you're sinking into the mattress at night. The soft material does run a bit warm in the summertime though, so if you a hot sleeper you may want to consider a cooling mattress instead.

Unboxing the Helix Midnight Mattress

The mattress ships compactly in a box and was pretty easy to assemble as I did it single-handed. It is a bit heavy so you may want a friend's support if you're setting it up yourself. It comes compressed in a few layers of plastic which were a little tricky to get off (make sure you don’t slice or knick the mattress while you’re cutting it off). Everything arrived safe and sound with minimal damage to the box.

What is the Helix mattress like to sleep on?

Firmness

The feel is exactly what I was looking for, ranking 5-6 on the firmness scale. The Goldilocks of mattresses, it's not too soft and not too firm. I was used to a very form mattress (which wasn't the most comfortable) so the soft top layer did take some getting used to but it was delightful.

Pressure relief and support

The first thing I noticed after unboxing the Midnight mattress, was how soft and squishy the top layer on. I was nervous it was going to be too soft for my liking but once I actually laid on the bed I was pleasantly surprised with the supportive spring of the wrapped coil base. I was comfy but completely supported. Overall, it's just the right balance for a stomach sleeper like me. 

Helix claims the mattress provides pressure point relief and while I didn’t suffer any major issues before, I certainly felt comfortable and well-supported with no back pain. My partner, a back and side sleeper, also felt supported and never experienced any pain or discomfort.

Breathability and cooling

The only real downside is the temperature it gets up to at night. I'm quite a warm sleeper and we tested this mattress in the middle of the summer with no air conditioning. So while the environment may have been a factor and a pretty fluffy duvet, I got pretty warm during the night. Helix does offer a GlacioTex™ Cooling Pillow Top cover as an upgrade if this is a concern for you but I have not tested it. 

Motion isolation

The padded memory foam top layers also ensure there is no motion transfer while sleeping. My partner drifts right off as soon as he gets into bed, but I'm much more of a night owl. I can be fidgeting around while reading or watching videos and he never felt jostled or disturbed. 

Edge support

This is a medium-firm mattress made up of five layers. The memory foam top layers consist of Helix Responsive Foam and Memory Plus foam. The body shape layer is made up of 1,000 wrapped coils, which are reinforced lengthwise for edge support. It's all wrapped in a super soft Light Breathe knit cover. Why am I testing the Zinus Ultra Cool Gel Mattress Topper? Well, when it comes to mattresses, you can call me Goldilocks. I’m really particular about what I like, and many beds are too soft or too hard for my discerning tastes. However, you can never really know what to expect from mattress toppers until you try them out for yourself. To help you find the best mattress topper for your bedroom, I tested out the Zinus Ultra Cool for a month, and while it definitely wasn’t the product for me, it will be really appealing to certain types of sleepers. 

TLDR: What I thought of the Zinus ultra cool gel mattress Topper

After several weeks of testing, my partner and I agreed to disagree about the Zinus mattress topper. As a back sleeper with an affinity for all things soft and cozy, he couldn’t get enough of the topper’s super-soft, sink-in plushness, and he said it was the best sleep he’s had in months. Me, on the other hand? I found the topper was nowhere near supportive enough to accommodate my side-sleeping habits and struggled to get comfortable most nights. All that to say: It’s definitely a subjective experience. 

Personal preferences aside, the Zinus Mattress Topper does have a lot of great attributes. I tend to sleep warm but I didn’t overheat at night, likely thanks to the topper’s gel memory foam, which is designed for temperature regulation. The topper didn’t produce any weird chemical smells when I set it up, and since I have several pets, I love that the cover can be removed and machine-washed for easy maintenance. 

The only major downside that I found during testing is that the topper shifts around on the mattress, especially if you toss and turn at night. It doesn’t have any straps to hold it in place, and it will definitely migrate around your bed, often taking the fitted sheet with it.

Unboxing the Zinus ultra cool gel mattress topper

The Zinus Mattress Topper arrived in a long, skinny box, and when I stood it up, the package came up to around my waist. While it was fairly large, the box was light enough for me to carry upstairs by myself, and I unpacked it right in my bedroom for the sake of convenience. 

The box says not to open it with a knife, but frankly, I’m not sure how else you’d cut through the packing tape. I opted to cut it open very carefully, being sure to only slice through the tape and not the cardboard. 

The topper was rolled up into a log shape using lots of plastic, and I had to unroll it and cut open the vacuum-sealed bag to get it out. The box also included a strap system that you can use to roll up and store the topper if needed. 

Once I removed the packaging, I spread the topper out on my bed, with the grippy side facing down. It was a bit deflated at first, but the memory foam puffed up to its intended size in around two hours. I was happy to find that the topper didn’t have a weird chemical smell — a common issue with new memory foam products — but it was a few inches smaller than my mattress, so it didn’t fully cover the surface. 

Is the Zinus ultra cool gel mattress topper comfortable?

It may seem like a simple question, but the answer is that it depends. After sleeping on this mattress topper for a month, my partner and I had opposite opinions about its comfort. Nate absolutely loved the plush memory foam surface, which he thought was delightfully cozy. He said it felt like being wrapped up in a hug when he laid down, and he consistently got a great night’s sleep on it. 

My experience wasn’t quite as positive. I solely sleep on my side, and the topper didn’t offer me nearly enough support at my pressure points. I always felt like my shoulder was sinking way too far down, and I often found myself trying to prop myself up in the middle of the night. It felt like trying to climb out of a quicksand hole! 

Because I was wiggling around so much at night, the mattress topper also shifted quite a bit—there aren’t any straps holding it in place—and this generally meant the sheets and topper had to be rearranged each morning. Between the added maintenance and my general discomfort sleeping on it, I couldn’t wait to get the topper off our bed after the testing period was over. 

Motion transfer
Because it’s made from memory foam, the Zinus Mattress Topper is great at minimizing motion transfer during the night. Nate often comes to bed after me, and I never felt him climbing into bed or shifting around as he got comfortable. I was also able to get out of bed most mornings without disturbing him. 

Edge support
The Zinus Mattress Topper doesn’t offer much in terms of additional edge support. If you sit on the edge of it, the memory foam sinks down quickly. Our mattress has good edge support thanks to its hybrid construction, so this wasn’t a problem for us, but if you’re hoping to improve the edge support of your bed, this topper isn’t going to be an effective solution. 

Is the Zinus ultra cool gel memory foam mattress topper breathable and cool?

The Zinus Ultra Cool Mattress Topper isn’t necessarily “cooling,” but it does help with temperature regulation at night. The memory foam feels like, well, regular ol’ memory foam when you lay down on it — it’s not going to provide any type of cooling sensation on warm summer nights, if that’s what you’re looking for. 

However, as someone who sleeps hot, I did find that the topper does a good job regulating body temperature during the night. Regular memory foam tends to get quite toasty when you lay on it for a long time, but the Ultra Cool Topper doesn’t retain as much warmth. I felt comfortable sleeping on it during the summer, and I never woke up in a puddle of my own sweat (which has 100% happened on other memory foam products). 

Is the Zinus ultra cool gel mattress topper right for you?

The Zinus Ultra Cool Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea. The memory foam construction is more plush than it is supportive, which makes it best suited for back sleepers. It may also be a good option if you have a brick-like mattress and are looking for a way to make your sleep surface a little softer. 

This mattress topper is also a solid choice for anyone who sleeps warm. Because it’s infused with gel, the memory foam is more breathable and doesn’t retain body heat during the night. This helps you stay at a comfortable temperature, even on warm summer nights.

The memory foam is wrapped in a removable cover that’s machine-washable, and the whole thing is quite affordable, costing less than $200 for a queen-size model. 

The biggest caveat we have about the Zinus Ultra Cool Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper is it’s not attached to the mattress in any way. If you toss and turn at night, the topper will shift around underneath you, and this often pulls my fitted sheet off the mattress, forcing me to remake the bed most mornings. However, you might be able to anchor the topper in place using a mattress pad.

It can also be controlled via your phone if that's your thing, while it's not as loud as you'd think it would be. 

As Amazon's Choice fan, I was actually quite shocked with this one as it's less than $100 and there's nothing I hate about it. Here's what else I've got to say...

What I thought of this Dreo Smart Fan

For such a small and lightweight piece of kit, this fan truly is powerful. It offers pretty much every feature that you'd need or want in a fan, including nine speeds and a timer setting up to 12 hours. It oscillates and is nice and quiet while in operation. Not only that, but it doesn't take up any extra floor space as it's designed to sit atop a table or piece of furniture. The thing I love the most about it (other than the fact that speed 9 (and Turbo mode) makes you feel like you could be on an airport runway if you close your eyes) is that it's simple. I've been using it with the remote for the last couple of weeks, but you can connect it to your phone and control it from there. It also links with Alexa and Google Assistant devices so that you can turn it on with your voice. All of that in a neat package and less than $100, this is a total steal.

I've been showing all of my friends and family this fan and they too couldn't believe how powerful it is. I tend to use it at a two or three in our bedroom, and if it's in our living room we might push it up to a four as this is a larger space. A couple of times we've used it to help speed along the process of drying washing indoors which has been a real help. And the fact it's lightweight means you can cart it around the house with no worries (even when pregnant!).

The only thing I could possibly moan about is that I couldn't manage to get it to connect to my phone via the app. I'm not sure if this was down to user error, though, or whether the fan was faulty. I am more than happy to use it the two other ways, however, so this really doesn't bother me.

Unboxing the Dreo Smart Fan

This fan arrived in a pretty small box that was easy enough to carry. I opened it and inside found a handy quick start guide, while the fan itself was fully assembled and nestled inside a sleeve for protection. There was some polystyrene waste (eugh!) and some cardboard waste. The remote and plug came in a little box. There was a sticker on the fan to show you which buttons do what, which was handy but TBH they are so self-explanatory I peeled it right off.

How to use the Dreo Smart Fan

You can use this fan one of three ways, the first being by touching the buttons on the base of the fan. Then you can control it via its remote, and then there's the smart aspect which means you'll need to download the app to control it from your phone.

On board controls
First up is the power button that you want to hit first. This sits on the far right of the base of the fan. The fan will automatically turn on to the last setting it was used, remembering whether it was on silent mode, too. Then, from left to right, we have: timer, vertical oscillation, horizontal oscillation, mode, and fan speed. 

There are four lights above the main menu of buttons and some more symbols above that. These buttons sit above the buttons, you need to press and hold to activate them. So, to lock the fan you need to press and hold the vertical oscillation button. You'll see a countdown appear on the fan so keep holding this until it reaches zero if you want to activate this setting. The lights glow white to indicate that they are in use. These controls are lock (press for 3 seconds), WiFi (press for 5 seconds), mute (press for 3 seconds), and turbo (press for 3 seconds).

I find that I used the mute button a lot as the sound of changing mode, especially when scrolling through nine modes, was a bit jarring.

To know which mode the fan is on, you'll see a number light up on the fan, from one to nine. Then beside this number, you might see some signs to signify the mode it's on as well as any special settings such as whether it's on a timer, or Turbo mode or not. This is pretty easy to figure out.

Remote control
Having a remote control fan is a total game-changer and it means you'll never have to get out of bed to turn it down or up again. Again, the remote is pretty intuitive and offers the same buttons that are on board, just in a different order. The power button sits at the very top, then on the line of buttons below you'll see a plus and a minus — to control the fan's mode. Below that is the mode button and the oscillate vertical button. Then, there's the button to make the fan oscillate horizontally and the timer button.

You can't lock the fan with the remote, mute it, turn on its wifi, or activate Turbo mode.

App control
To connect this fan to your phone, you need to download the Dreo app. Open the app and click 'Add device'. Stand near your fan and make sure that it's plugged in. 

Unfortunately, I followed the advice that was given in the Quick Start Guide that came in the box but never managed to connect this fan to my phone to control it, which also meant that I couldn't connect it to any smart devices (not that I have any). This didn't really bother me as I'd prefer to use the on-board controls or remote anyway (because lack of phone storage IYKYK) but for others, this could be a game-changer if theirs doesn't work, too.

What I loved about the Dreo Smart Fan

It's very powerful
This is possibly one of the most powerful fans I've ever used that's not made for industrial purposes. On Turbo mode it really is strong, and it has a total reach of 110ft which I couldn't even measure as my apartment isn't even that long.

It has 9 different speed settings
There are a total of nine speeds that you can use this fan on. But, TBH, you'll probably only end up using settings one to four (or possibly five on a hotter day), because anything higher is seriously powerful. This also means that it boasts great reach — mode nine can seriously cool down a larger room. I have an open plan living and dining room and on mode nine this fan can blow loose papers around, trust me.

It has a timer setting for 8 hours max
Most fans have a timer setting, yes, but a lot of them go to maybe three hours maximum which isn't really that great TBH. Sometimes if it's really hot and I'm heading out without the dog, I like to leave my fan on for him but I know I'll be gone for longer than three hours so this max timer setting is great. It goes up in increments of one hour, BTW.

It's whisper-quiet
Yes, when this fan is on its highest mode it's obviously loud. But, when you're working with anything from one to three it's actually quite nice and quiet. I like to sleep in pretty much silence, bar white noise which lulls me to sleep, so I can easily sleep with this fan on low all night long.

You can detach its front for easy cleaning
Fans hold dust like there's no tomorrow, IYKYK. This is possibly one of the only things I hate about owning a fan, because much like the most intricate LEGO set you've ever seen, they tend to be so difficult to clean. Not this one, though! Its front grille detaches so that you can dust its blades and everywhere else it's wipeable. So handy! Essentially, this means you won't be blowing dust around your home after you've used it for a few months.

It can be moved horizontally or vertically
Yep, this fan oscillates as others do, but it also can be angled 90° vertically if it's placed on the floor but needs to target somewhere that's high up. Genius!

It has a child lock
You can set this fan on a locked mode to prevent tiny hands from fiddling with it. So, you needn't worry about placing it on the floor as they won't be able to change its settings at any point once locked unless they happen to press and hold the right button.

Its buttons dim based on how bright the room is
If it's nighttime, the buttons and the lights on the fan will dim or turn off in some cases, so as not to disturb you while you snooze. During the day, though, when the fan can detect light in the room, the touchscreen buttons will glow so that you can clearly see them.

You can stop its buttons from making noise
I love technology as much as the next person, but there's something jarring about that beeping noise that indicates a change that really does annoy me. Especially when flipping through nine different modes, fast. So, I liked that you could turn the volume of the buttons off and use the fan in peace and quiet, so as not to wake anyone in the night when fiddling with it.

What I didn't love about the Dreo Smart Fan

Honestly, there wasn't really anything that I didn't like about this fan. It's quite rare for me to review something and say that it ticked all my boxes, but this truly did. The only thing I could moan about is that it didn't connect via WiFi to my phone, but I think that was a case of this particular fan as the process sounds pretty seamless.

We're currently on a quest to test the highest-rated pillows that you can buy online. Yes, this means that I've been spending the last couple of months sleeping on different types of pillows. Actually, let me rephrase that: I've managed to rope my husband into testing different types of pillows, as I am currently pregnant which means that even if I slept on a pillow worth $1,000, I still wouldn't get a good night's sleep. Ah, the joys. Anyway, it turns out that he's the perfect person for this job because he's as hot as a radiator at night (I'm sure he won't mind me outing him as a sweaty sleeper) and is forever flipping his pillow to get it feeling cold again.

Well, not anymore. Thanks to the Coop Eden Cool+ Pillow which is soooo cool to the touch it's actually incredible. In fact, we've got in a habit of showing this pillow to our friends and watching their mouths drop in shock as they touch it and realize just how cold it actually is. So, the verdict is that this is the best cooling pillow around, but it's also genius because you can adjust its fill based on the way you sleep to ensure it's a comfortable fit for everyone.

How does my husband sleep? He's a side sleeper who sometimes rolls onto his back.  Although this pillow is thick, he does use it with another pillow underneath. He did add all of the extra filling to this pillow, though. If you wanna know a little more, here's what he loved and didn't love about this Coop Eden Cool+ Pillow...

What I thought of the Coop Eden Cool+ Pillow

My husband has tested his fair share of pillows over the past couple of years (all thanks to my job, that is) and he is usually a strict memory foam guy. He loves the stuff, which works out great because as a front sleeper, I cannot stand it. While this pillow isn't solid foam like others he has slept on, it is stuffed with 100% virgin foam fill which you can remove and add, depending on how thick you like your pillow. While he is a side sleeper who rolls onto his back, he loves a thick pillow, so he slept on it as it was for a while and then decided to add the rest of the filling — it was after this he found it perfect. It's also worth noting that the pillow has two sides, one of which is more soft and the other more firm so you can flip it based on whichever side is more comfortable.

The long and short is that he loves this pillow and quite honestly struggles to sleep without it. He has been testing it in the summer so he might end up switching to a different pillow in the winter, but he says that the pillow never gets warm and he never has to flip it. Another thing he loves about it is the fact it's hypoallergenic as he suffers from allergies so this is a must-have factor in a pillow for him.

The only thing I dislike about it is the washing instructions it comes with. Because we have a dog who loves to get on the bed and cozy up with us, I prefer having a pillow that's washable in the machine. This one is spot clean only which is annoying, though you can wash its cover. He also prefers to use it without a sham as this is when it's most effective. This means that it is a little slippery when used on top of another pillow — it will just slide away from it. It's very much a lone pillow because it's very thick with all of the fill added and it offers great stability.

How to use the Coop Eden Cool+ pillow

As with most adjustable pillows, there are different ways to use them depending on whether you prefer to position yourself on your front, back, or side. This is the same guidance that is given for the Coop Original Pillow, FYI.

Back sleepers should remove about one-quarter of the filling of this pillow.

Front sleepers should remove about a third of the filling of this pillow.

Side sleepers like my husband should try the pillow as it is initially. Then, add or remove filling as needed to get comfy.

Once it's at the thickness you like, use a mirror or get someone to take a photo of you lying on it, in your sleep position. If your neck is tilted upwards, remove some filling. If it's sloping downwards, add some more. Essentially, you want your spine to be fully aligned for the most comfortable sleep.

What I loved about the Coop Eden Cool+ Pillow

It's super cool to the touch — and it stays cool
It's quite hard to believe but this pillow is cold to the touch. Especially when next to your average non-cooling pillow, this is very noticeable. It's less noticeable when there's a sham on top of it, but you can still feel it on your face when snoozing. It also manages to stay cool throughout the night meaning you never have to flip your pillow for coldness again.

It comes in two sizes
Choose from a king or queen size, depending on the size of your bed. If you like a large pillow, go for a king.

It has two sides
There are two sides to this pillow. Thanks to its cover, one side is slightly more firm than the other. This also makes it great for tailoring to your sleep position.

It's designed for all sleepers
Yes, this pillow is designed for all sleepers. It comes with a bunch of extra filling that you can add or remove fill based on how you sleep, but this might take a few tries to get right.

It's non-toxic
Yes, the memory foam that this pillow is stuffed with is non-toxic, so you don't have to stress about what you're breathing in while you sleep. This also means that it comes with certifications — CertiPUR-US and GreenGuard Gold.

What I didn't love about the Coop Eden Cool+ Pillow

It's not the cheapest of pillows
It's a lot more expensive than the brand's original pillow at $139, but to be fair I definitely can justify the price because the technology is quite incredible. So long as it lasts and stays cool for its entire use and even after several cover washes, it's definitely worth the splurge.

It's not washable
You cannot wash the actual pillow, which for some might be a real game-changer. Yes, this is super frustrating but the good thing is that you can wash its cover and it can be spot-cleaned if need be. Just something to bear in mind. I've washed the cover of the pillow several times now and it has come out of the machine looking exactly how it should.

It works best without a sham
Annoyingly, while it does still feel cool inside a sham, it is the most effective without one on. It's not uncomfortable per se, but this isn't the feel that you might be used to. Its cover is washable which is fine, otherwise, we found that it works great with a silk pillowcase as this is naturally quite cool, too.

It's definitely a single pillow
By this, I mean that it's more or less designed to be used as a lone pillow, not on top of any other pillow. Its cooling factor becomes less effective when you wrap it in a sham, so it's much better used with the washable cover it comes with if you're an especially hot sleeper. Doing this means that this pillow if placed on top of another, will just slide away from it.

Good to know

Much like the other Coop pillows I've tested, this pillow came rolled and vacuum-packed in a pretty tiny box. Once you cut the plastic, it will fully inflate. The instructions say to fluff it up by hand and leave it somewhere to fully expand for over 24 hours before sleeping on it.

I was also sent two more of these pillows, which contain the same cooling technology but are different in shape. These are the Eden Cool+ Cut-Out and the Eden Cool+ Crescent. These are both super cooling, adjustable, and spot clean only. The only difference between these two pillows and the Coop Eden Cool+ is the shape.

I was sent all of the pillows you can buy at Coop Home Goods to review, so I am making my way through them (with help from my husband). 

If you’re anything like me, replacing a mattress feels like a monumental task. Thankfully, the Parachute Down Alternative Mattress Topper has saved my butt (literally). I first got my mattress 9 years ago, in a resident-donated “free zone” in my apartment complex. What started as a memory foam heaven recently became a sunken, sad mess with a serious sag from years of starfish sleeping. Alliterative description aside — I was just about to give up on this mattress and start the search for a new one.

My luck turned around when I was given the chance to review this incredibly comfortable mattress topper. Now that I’ve been sleeping on it for a month, I can officially say I’m never going back to a topper-less mattress.

This Parachute mattress topper is made of 100% hypoallergenic microfiber fill — which is perfect for a sniffly, asthmatic like myself — and features a 100% cotton sateen shell. It has a plush 3-inch thickness with baffle box construction to prevent shifting or sliding off the bed. It comes in 6 different sizes, with even a Twin XL option at $199 so all your college dorm-mates will be jealous. And Parachute offers a 60-day return policy just in case you decide you don’t like sleeping on a literal cloud.

Here are my thoughts as I spent four weeks snoozing on top of it, day and night.

TLDR: What I thought of this Parachute Mattress Topper

I’ve never actually owned a mattress topper before, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. As a back sleeper, I prefer a soft but supportive firmness. When I opened the package, I quite literally gasped — I was shocked at how thick and squishy it was. This is definitely on the softer side in terms of support. I think it would pair best with a medium to firm mattress.

After just one night, I was hooked. The sunken part of my mattress suddenly became unnoticeable, and between the topper and my down-filled duvet, I felt like I had slept in a pita pocket made from clouds. Needless to say, I was beyond impressed with both the topper and the straight 9 hours of sleep I had that night.

Like anything fluffy, I was slightly concerned about it being too insulating. I started testing this mattress topper in the peak of Texas summer (one of the hottest on record!), and I’m happy to say I had zero problems with sleeping too warm on it. If it can last for a straight month of 100+ degrees, I’m confident it can handle any climate. 

I can confirm that it's comfortable for back sleepers, and due to its feel it should be fine for side sleepers too, but this will depend on the type of mattress that's underneath it. Front sleepers, though, should probably give this one a miss as it won't be firm enough.

Unboxing the Parachute Down Alternative Mattress Topper

The mattress topper comes in a pretty traditional thick, plastic bag with rope carry handles. I will probably reuse this bag at some point, whether for storing an extra comforter or for moving house, which makes it quite handy. Otherwise, the box it came in was recyclable. The card tucked into the bag has minimal text — the size and material makeup. The only thing I wish it had said was the care directions. I had to stop myself from chucking it in the washer and go to the website to see that it is in fact dry clean only.

Straight out of the package, the topper had zero odor to my surprise. I gave it a quick spritz of the laundry spray I use (helloooo lavender and chamomile!) and laid it out over my mattress. Because of the baffle box construction, the infill is evenly distributed, and I didn’t have to fluff it up at all.

One thing that I wasn’t expecting is that there are no elastic straps on this topper. I solved this by slipping my Amazon mattress pad over the topper to keep it in place. After adding my cotton percale sheets and down-filled duvet, I was feeling pretty good about my sleeping setup. My bed gained some height and looked perfectly inviting. It didn’t move at all throughout the night which surprised me since it doesn’t have straps. That said, I would recommend a mattress protector to keep it in place, especially one that has a terry-cloth material or something that has a bit of friction.

Is the Parachute Down Alternative Mattress Topper comfortable?

Like most people who live alone, I talk to myself regularly. As soon as I slipped under the covers, I said out loud, “Oh wow, that’s the stuff.” I felt like I was staying at a five-star luxury resort, minus the room service. 

On the first night of testing, I slept so comfortably that I missed my 7 a.m. alarm and didn’t wake up til 8. A little extra rushing to get ready for work was completely worth it—I hadn’t slept that peacefully in a long time. Oversleeping my alarm soon became a theme with this mattress topper, as it happened four more times during the month. Do with that what you will and maybe set a second alarm (trust me).

I’m a back sleeper and this topper perfectly conformed to my body. I was so excited about it that I made a couple of friends come over and lay on it just to see what kind of paradise I was living in. Even my boyfriend who has trouble sleeping soundly slept through the night on this topper.

Edge support
There isn’t a ton of edge support to this mattress topper by itself. My mattress is a relatively firm memory foam material so when I sit on the edge of the bed, I don’t slide off. The mattress topper had no impact on the edge support, and I think it would largely depend on what your mattress is like.

Motion transfer
Again, I think this largely depends on what type of mattress you have, but on my memory foam, I was able to place a glass a few inches from my body, roll side to side, and not have the glass move at all! Perfect for not disturbing your sleeping partner. 

Is the Parachute Down Alternative Mattress Topper breathable and cool?

Because I live in a hot climate, I typically run warm when I sleep. Although I was hesitant about adding something else to my bed — especially something filled with down alternatives — I had zero issues with sweating or getting overheated. That's not to say that this is a cooling mattress topper, but it definitely did not add heat to my sleep setup, which was great.

I’m no scientist, but I’m guessing the 100% cotton sateen shell is what keeps this topper light and breathable. It was with this mattress topper that I learned cozy does not always equate to warm, and for that I am grateful.

Is the Parachute Down Alternative Mattress Topper right for you?

If you’re dealing with an older mattress or one that maybe isn’t the best quality, I would absolutely recommend the Parachute mattress topper. It adds a plush thickness that feels luxurious and soft to the touch. For a couple hundred bucks, your bed can go from drab to fab without having to shell out for an entirely new mattress. Good sleep, in my opinion, is priceless—or in this case, about $300.

Invest in this mattress topper if:
You want to revamp an old mattress…or make a new mattress even better
You like a soft, fluffy bed and sleep on your side or back
You want something hypoallergenic

Avoid this mattress topper if:
You avoid the dry cleaners
You want something with a trial period
You're a front sleeper — it might be too soft

Confession time: When buying pillows, I haven’t been the kindest to myself. Instead of thinking about what’s going to support me and my tossing and turning best, I usually just go for something feathery and fluffy. These don’t tend to be great for my neck, so I used to wake up with so many aches. That’s all changed now I’ve been using the Purple Harmony Pillow.

I’ve never thought to go for a latex pillow, but I was willing to give it a go. Now, I don’t know if I can look back. I’m awful for tossing and turning when I’m trying to sleep, and I used to spend so much time re-plumping my pillow. The beauty of this latex pillow is that it just stays in shape, so I can move around as much as I like, with no issues.

It comes in two sizes — standard and king. I tried out the king, as I like a longer pillow to sleep on. As well as this, it comes in different heights. I sleep on my side and my back so I chose a medium height one. Purple also offers a low and a tall, which cover stomach sleepers and combination sleepers. So, no matter how you sleep, there’s an option for everyone.

I didn’t think I’d love this cooling pillow as much as I do, but spoiler alert: I’ve never slept better. I’m still using it even beyond reviewing it, and can’t imagine nights without it.

What I thought of the Purple Harmony Pillow

I’ll be totally real — this pillow does take some getting used to. After years of sleeping on feather pillows, the squishy latex felt very unfamiliar. Along with the unusual honeycomb texture, I was in a whole new world. But after just a week or so of testing, I fully relaxed into it.

The medium-sized pillow works really well for me and my broad shoulders. With feather pillows, I've generally found that I sink into them and that they don't offer much support. Instead, with this Purple pillow, it gently cradles my neck and head. This means that I don't wake up with aches or pains, and instead feel like my muscles are fully rested.

I have also found that ventilated latex material helps me stay cool all night. Have you seen that Family Guy meme where it says “Welcome to the cool side of the pillow?” I don't need to flip the Purple Harmony over, as even on the hottest nights it stays at the perfect temperature. The cover is also moisture-wicking, which is amazing for me as a sweaty sleeper (sorry, TMI). I haven't woken up once in a hot mess, which is totally game-changing.

For me, the main negative is that you can only spot-clean the core. AKA, in order to get rid of marks on the pillow itself, you can’t put it in the washing machine. That being said, this isn’t a huge issue for me, as the cover is machine-washable, and I’m always ready to use my Tide pen.

What I loved about the Purple Harmony Pillow

It’s a dream to sink into
When you hop into bed at the end of the day, you want to have a pillow that feels amazing to lie back on. This pillow does that brilliantly, and the feeling never gets old either.

It keeps its shape
Because of the core being made from latex, the filling doesn’t move around. For me as a side and combination sleeper who switches positions loads, this is incredible, as I don’t have to keep re-adjusting it in the night like I used to do with feather ones. It also makes making the bed in the morning very easy.

What I didn't love about the Purple Harmony Pillow

It takes some getting used to
As someone who has only used traditional feather pillows in the past, I did find the latex material hard to adjust to at first. After a week or so, I got used to it and started to really enjoy the squishy but firm material.

The pillow itself can only be spot-cleaned
If you’re like me and are used to being able to machine-wash your pillows, this could be a negative. However, being able to wash the cover has stopped this being a problem for me.

It is an investment
At $159 for the standard pillow and $191 for the king, it isn’t the most budget-friendly choice. That being said, I think it’s very much worth the price tag. I’m now a firm believer in investing that bit extra in my bedding.

The latex core makes it unusable for some people
If you’re allergic to latex, this definitely wouldn’t be a good choice for you.

Good to know

Take it from me: I'm one of those girls who loves cozying/cuddling up to a cushion. Quite literally, the sky is the limit for scatter cushions and plump pillows... even if my husband says otherwise!

POV: You step inside your college dorm room and instantly realize you need more space. As to be expected from a classic college experience, your room is probably going to be super tiny and look as if there just isn’t enough space for what you need. 

The good news is that there’s a simple (and cost-effective) answer to getting more space for organizing your dorm. See: lofting your dorm bed. This will give you plenty of room for storage or to turn it into a cozy area for studying or chilling with friends. 

I’ll level with you here, if you’ve never lofted a dorm bed before it can seem a li'l overwhelming but, honestly, it’s not too bad. The whole process is quick, easy, and actually fairly simple. 

Wondering what steps you need to take in order to (safely) loft your dorm bed? Don’t panic, because we’ve got the lowdown. 

Good to know

Time: 1 hour (this includes the whole process from removing the mattress to putting it back after the bed has been lofted)

Difficulty: Intermediate. (Don't panic, this is only ranked as being harder because you'll have to remove your mattress)

Helpful hint: Ask a friend or your roommate to give you a hand, as this will make the process far quicker, easier, and safer.

You'll want to choose one of the following kits based on the type of lofted bed you're after. Check in with your college to see if they provide kits or if you're allowed to bring your own risers or frame.

How to loft a dorm bed

 Step 1: Get a lofting kit 

The first step is to get your hands on a lofting kit. You can either ask for one from the college housing office (most colleges offer these but some come with an additional charge) or you can opt to buy one online. Just make sure it's allowed and you select the right choice that'll work with your bed.

Step 2: Remove your mattress

The next step is to slide your mattress off your bed and move it out of the way (try leaning it against a wall). Ask your roommate, a parent,  your resident assistant, or a friend for some help. You definitely don't want to do this on your own.  

Step 3: Turn the bed frame onto its side or lift the legs

Before you can get to work, you need to turn your bed onto its side, so that you have easy access to all four feet. This is another two-person job, and don't try to do it alone! 

If you're using bed risers, you won't need to do this. Simply lift up each corner of the frame in order to slide the risers beneath.

Step 4: Add the attachments to the legs of the bed 

Start by adding the pegs to the legs. Most bed lofting kits come with pegs to add to the base of the legs that can then be used to attach the leg extensions safely onto the bed frame. They should fit easily into the bottom of each leg. When fitting these, it’s important to make sure that everything comes together perfectly and that the pegs and the additional legs fit snugly onto the bed frame. If you're using bed risers, slide these under each leg. 

Step 5: Check the frame and replace your mattress

Get your frame back on its feet or back into position and replace the mattress. Just like that and you have a new and improved bed to get you through the semester!

How do I sleep? I'm currently pregnant, so while I used to be a front sleeper, that's now out of the window. I now only sleep on my side because it's safest, so I found that I needed to add all of the extra filling to this pillow to get comfortable. That being said, it's thick enough to serve as my only pillow (aside from my pregnancy pillow that sits in between my legs, IYKYK). What I thought of the Coop Home Goods Original Adjustable Pillow

I really enjoyed sleeping on this pillow. Although it didn't absolutely blow my socks off, it's a good option for anyone who changes sleeping positions or for a spare room. I tested the larger size of this pillow and appreciated the mega surface area it offered. I also really like that you can wash the whole thing, which will definitely come in handy when I inevitably have a milk spill in the middle of the night in a few months' time. I also share my bed with a hairy dog. While I don't have any allergies, it's important that I have a hypoallergenic pillow as my husband does suffer and it would def affect him if it wasn't. 

If you like your pillows real thick, you might want to squeeze another one beneath the Coop pick. Even with all the filling, your head sinks down. It's also not great at keeping you cool — the Coop Home Goods Eden Cool+ Pillow (review coming soon) is the best cooling pillow. This didn't bother me, but it might be non-negotiable for some.

How to use this Coop Home Goods Pillow

As with most adjustable pillows, there are different ways to use them, all depending on whether you prefer to position yourself on your front, back, or side.

Back sleepers should remove about one-quarter of the filling of this pillow.

Front sleepers should remove about a third of the filling of this pillow.

Side sleepers like me should try the pillow as it is initially. Then, add or remove filling as needed to get comfy.

Once it's at the thickness you like, use a mirror or get someone to take a photo of you laying on it, in your sleep position. If your neck is tilted upwards, remove some filling. If it's sloping downwards, add some more. Essentially, you want your spine to be fully aligned for the most comfortable sleep.

What I loved about the Coop Home Goods Original Adjustable Pillow

It's totally washable
You can throw this entire pillow in your washing machine, which is a total game changer because it actually grosses me out how much bacteria could live inside our pillows. Its cover is also thick yet soft, and this can be washed too. It can all be tumble dried on low as well.

It's designed for all sleepers
Yes, this pillow is designed for all sleepers, except hot ones. You get a piece of cardboard included in the box with your pillow that explains how to use it. Essentially, you need to add or remove fill based on how you sleep, but this might take a few tries to get right.

Its cover is made from bamboo
The pillow has a 100% polyester liner and it's wrapped in a breathable but cozy (and super soft) fabric that's made from 60% polyester and 40% bamboo-derived viscose rayon. I know this doesn't make it super eco-friendly but it's a decent start at a good price.

It's non-toxic
Yes, the memory foam that this pillow is stuffed with is non-toxic, so you don't have to stress about what you're breathing in while you sleep. This also means that it comes with certifications — CertiPUR-US and GreenGuard Gold.

It's hypoallergenic
Its cross-cut memory foam is indeed hypoallergenic, which is great if your partner or roommate has allergies.

What I didn't love about the Coop Home Goods Original Adjustable Pillow

It's not the cheapest of pillows
Yes, it's only $72, which isn't too bad when you hear about those fancy $150 pillows. That being said, if you need to buy enough pillows for your entire bed, then we say to just get two of these and then two slightly more basic ones to sit underneath them. The more you buy direct, the bigger saving you get, FYI.

It's not the densest pillow
I've already mentioned it, but this is not the densest pillow out there. If you're someone who really likes a full pillow and sleeps with two or three, this might not be your best bet TBH. With all of the filling added, it measured around 6.5 inches in height, but your head will sink into that fast.

Good to know

This pillow came rolled and vacuum-packed in a pretty tiny box. Once you cut the plastic, it will fully inflate. The instructions say to put it in your dryer on low for 10 to 15 minutes to fluff it up. It says to use dryer sheets but I didn't have any. If you don't have a dryer, you need to shake it out and leave it somewhere to fully expand for over 24 hours.

How we reviewed this Coop Home Goods Pillow

As with everything we review, we make sure to pair our reviewer and the product we need to review to ensure they work well together. I chose to review this adjustable pillow as I am pregnant right now, so have to sleep on my side, but when I am no longer pregnant I will go back to sleeping in my default position — on my front. I'll update this review to say whether it's comfortable for front sleepers once I try it out. What I loved about the Sweet Zzz White Noise Machine

It has a 12-hour battery life
Always a perk when it comes to any type of electronic. I've had this plugged into a wall socket, but once you have enough juice, you can disconnect the cord and use it as a portable white noise machine. While it's charging, the indicator light will show solid red. Once it's reached 100%, it'll go green.

It can memorize your favorite settings
Sort of like a last dialed feature on your phone, the machine remembers what setting you used before.

It has a timer option
With the Sweet Zzz white noise machine, you can choose between 30, 60, and 90 minutes of play or freestyle with continuous play. I think the half-hour option is more than enough, but I have used the "a la carte" option over the set menu sitch.

You can use headphones
Sometimes your college roomy or BF/GF might not need a li'l extra help counting sheep. And, you've got to respect that, right? Thankfully, you can plug in some wired headphones and enjoy this sound bath, solo. It would be great if, in the next iteration of the product, Sweet Zzz could introduce a Bluetooth hook-up so that I could use my Apple AirPods (or any other wireless accessories).

The soothing night lights
I was one of those kids who begged their mom for glow-in-the-dark stars and decals on the wall, but this is a nice (less permanent) solution that you can switch off. My favorite is the light amber option (top row, third in) as my gray decor can feel a little glum at times. You can alter the brightness by holding down the button, too!

It's ROHS Certified
Whether or not you have children, the fact that this gets the green light from the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive 2002/95/EC is a good sign. In simple terms, this bit of legislation limits the amount of hazardous chemicals in electronics.

It has variable levels of volume
I trialed this by using the speaker icons and found that the maximum volume is a little too loud for my liking. It does "ding" when it has reached the top level.

It has a cute string for hanging
Personally, I placed mine on my mirrored bedside table, but if you don't have small bedroom furniture by your bed, you can hang this where appropriate.

It's lightweight (but durable)
Though it weighs less than a pound, I've knocked it off the side of my bedside table a couple of times. My bedroom floor is carpeted, but I'd guess that it'll still work if you accidentally knocked it on hard flooring. Don't hold me to that, obvi, as I haven't "tested" this, but it does have a one-year warranty in case you genuinely break it.

Most of the sounds are great

Bird song
I happen to live in the suburbs, so I see and hear various birds (including parakeets). Anyone whose most exotic neighborhood species is a pigeon — this one is for you. The audio is sweet and flute-like. Even when I'm not sleeping, I might just pop this on when I'm working from home or in the bath for a fast track to a spa-like experience.

Crickets
IDK why, but the sound of crickets chirping just reminds me of warm balmy vacations in Europe. To me, it's such a soothing sound (if you can get past the fact that they make it by rubbing their leathery front wings together. Gross.

Fireplace
Ahhh, autumnal nights. Why do we have to wait half the year to enjoy the sound of hot embers? Sure, there's no warmth or glistening, but if you want crackling audio without the fire risk, this setting is hot stuff.

Thunder and rain
Now unless you need your thunder buddy (like the cuddly bear from Ted), this could be quite relaxing. The trickling rain does legit make you want to snuggle under the covers, but the occasional roar could wake you just as you've secured your first-class ticket to dream world.

Waves
I love playing with water on the beach and hearing waves crashing, but if you need to pee — don't do it. This sound will only make a full bladder feel uncomfortable IMO. Same with the stream.
