“With a pergola it’s simple to make the feel even more private by adding billowing outdoor curtains or trailing vines to craft a natural barrier from prying eyes,” says Aaron.

Make sure you choose your fabric carefully though, Aaron suggests using weather-resistant fabrics. Something like Bonzer’s waterproof outdoor curtains (pictured above) should do the job nicely.

Often it's not the big pieces that add value, but rather the smaller details that bring a look together and make it successful. 

"The secret is to consider the space an extension of your home and decorate it as you would any other room in the house. For example, I like to add rugs to a living room or bedroom to give the space texture and color, and an indoor/outdoor rug will do exactly the same to an al fresco area, while also giving the patio a focal point,"  says Sue Jones, creative director at OKA.

1. Japanese Maple

Available in a range of hues spanning bright red, lime green, and deep purple, Japanese maples are one of the best trees to grow in pots if you’re looking for colorful foliage. They are ideal for patios with a Japanese garden influence, and work beautifully alongside a small pond or water feature.

Anna Ohler, the owner of Bright Lane Gardens nursery, says, “For growing Japanese maples in outdoor pots, it is important to choose a container large enough to accommodate the tree's root system and provide stability. A pot with a diameter of at least 18 to 24 inches is recommended for young trees, while more mature specimens may require larger containers. Any pot should have at least three to four holes for adequate drainage.”

Anna recommends placing these trees in dappled shade to prevent leaf scorch. Use a well-draining, acidic potting mix, she says. This should be kept consistently moist, but not waterlogged.

“Citrus trees grown in pots will not grow much larger than the pot can accommodate,” says Diane. “If you wish to have a larger citrus tree, place your tree in a larger pot – and vice versa. At a minimum, I suggest nothing smaller than an 8-to-16-gallon pot to start and eventually moving up to a 20-gallon pot (about half of an oak whiskey barrel).

“Citrus trees make the absolute perfect porch or deck potted tree,” Diane continues. They’re also wonderful when used to flank the entrances of garden areas, driveways, or walking paths, she adds.

She also suggests planting a flowering ground cover (like creeping thyme) at the base of your citrus tree pot. This will help retain moisture and add a beautiful design to your potted plants. “This is one of my favorite things to do with potted trees because I just love the look of pink flowers ‘overflowing’ from the pot,” she says.

3. Olive

Dave Sheridan of Ascension Tree Care recommends the Arbequina olive tree as one of the best trees to grow in pots. They’re cold-tolerant and drought-hardy, he says, plus, they are able to produce viable fruit within two to four years.

These silvery-green-leaved trees are a great match for Mediterranean garden ideas in hardiness zones 8–11. Keep them somewhere sunny and sheltered, and allow the soil to dry out a little between waterings.

They can also be grown indoors year-round if conditions are right: they need plenty of sun, regular watering, and good drainage, Dave says.

4. Dwarf apple

Diane says, “One of my absolute favorite trees to plant in pots is a small dwarf apple tree. To me, there is nothing more fabulous than picking an apple off of a potted tree that is pruned to only about 5 to 6 feet tall. I have a dwarf 'Granny Smith' apple tree that is potted and placed in the middle of my children's play area, but they can also be used as centerpieces of other landscaped areas or even on a large deck or patio.”

Be sure to choose a variety grown on a mini-dwarf rootstock (like M.27 or similar), with good disease resistance, that’s appropriate for your growing zone, Diane says. “You'll also need a fairly large pot (at least a 20-gallon) to accommodate the apple tree’s extensive root system."

For narrow spaces, try a columnar apple tree, such as “Scarlet Sentinel” from Fast Growing Trees. These have an upright growth habit with hardly any branches at all. 

You could also consider the "Cinderella" crab apple, as Dave recommends, which thrives in hardiness zones 4–9 and can reach heights of 8 feet. 

Apples need a good amount of sun to thrive, as well as well-drained soil. Note, too, that many varieties of apple trees need a pollinating partner in order to bear fruit.

5. Bay laurel

Bay laurels, available at Fast Growing Trees, are well-favored for their fragrant, evergreen leaves, which can be used as a cooking spice. They can be grown indoors or out (they make a lovely addition to a herb garden), but need plenty of sun to flourish. Due to their dense canopy, they are good for improving privacy in gardens.

Like olives, they are drought-tolerant. Allow the soil to dry out slightly before watering them again. Proper drainage is crucial – lifting your pot up onto pot feet, available from Amazon, will reduce risks of waterlogging if you’re keeping yours in your yard.

6. Dwarf spruce

Anna recommends dwarf spruces as some of the best trees to grow in pots. “These are compact, slow-growing evergreens that retain their foliage year-round, adding greenery and structure to outdoor spaces,” she says. “They are suitable for small gardens, patios, or balconies and require minimal maintenance.”

Examples include the dwarf Alberta spruce (available at Nature Hills) and the dwarf blue globe spruce, available from Fast Growing Trees.

Anna recommends placing dwarf spruces in a location with partial to full sunlight, depending on the specific variety. “Water regularly, keeping the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.

“Choose a container with a diameter of 18 to 24 inches to provide ample space for the tree's root system. Make sure the pot you choose has good drainage to prevent root rot.”

7. Dwarf hinoki cypress

Dwarf hinoki cypress trees, available from Fast Growing Trees, are another recommendation from Anna, with the same evergreen benefits as dwarf spruces.

Slow-growing, neat and compact (growing up to 6 feet when mature), they look stunning in a pair to flank a front door design. Water regularly during dry periods, and ensure they’re somewhere with full to partial sun for the best results.

Anna highlights that most evergreens are susceptible to salt damage. “If you live in a northern region that gets snow, ensure your potted tree is protected from road spray or plowed snow, as the salt will quickly damage the tree's foliage,” she advises.

8. Magnolia “Stellata”

This is a pretty option with star-shaped, delicate blooms that steal the show in a spring garden. Although it makes a good deciduous small tree for a garden border, it can also be grown in a large container with well-draining soil.

“Royal Star”, available from Nature Hills, flowers slightly later than other varieties which helps it resist frost damage. It’s suitable for USDA hardiness zones 4 through 9. Keep it somewhere sheltered from strong winds, in full or partial sun. 

9. Ornamental Cherry

Ornamental cherry trees also have beautiful springtime blossoms, and some compact varieties, such as “Little Twist® Fuji”, are suitable for container growing in small spaces.

Dave notes that weeping cherries can also be grown this way, however they require a large pot to accommodate their root balls. “It’s also important to understand that these cherries will grow to a fairly large size and will require re-potting,” he adds. “They prefer full to partial sun and require well-drained soil.”

They need repotting every three years or so, until they reach the desired size. At this point, simply trim the rootball and refresh the potting soil instead.

Should you fertilize potted trees?

Most trees in containers will benefit from a feed now and again, to give their potting soil a boost in nutrients. A slow-release fertilizer, such as Osmocote Smart-Release Plant Food Plus from Amazon, applied using packet instructions during the growing season, is often the way to go.

A paver patio doesn't exclude you from the fun of having greenery into your space. 

"One style that's very popular is a checkerboard pattern with grass interspersed," says Rafi Friedman, president of Coastal Luxury Outdoors.

"This works best on flat, level ground, and with pavers that are sunk into the earth a little bit, since it makes for easier mowing," Rafi explains.

"Flexible seating using folding chairs (such as Walmart's Mainstays Greyson steel and sling folding outdoor patio armchair set ) is the way to go. This will let you use the patio as part of the broader yard space when you aren't having smaller gatherings," says Rafi.

"If your space is especially small, my go-to is to use a small café table and chairs as they are spacy-savvy, easy to move and tend to have the broadest use," says Kat. "An alternative to this is to select two space-savvy lounge chairs with a small side table in between," she adds. 

8. Pick a shape

What shaped patio dining table should you go for in a small space? Kat has a few suggestions. "The first is a round dining table with chairs as round tables tend to feel comfortable in tight spaces."

Kat continues, "The second option if the space allows and more people need to be accommodated is a narrow rectangular table (such as the industrial rectangular Ebern Designs outdoor table in 12 colors from Wayfair). With the rectangular dining table you can also use built-in bench seating for one side for small-space friendly approach. Bonus points for incorporating storage into the bench!" 

9. Create atmosphere with lighting

Fairy lights or garden lighting ideas of any kind can really enhance a space, and make it much more suitable for outdoor socialising after dark.

"Incorporating catenary lighting overhead can really pull the whole patio space together," says Cate Singleton, Tilly's director of design. 

Sets of string lights such as these outdoor LED lights from Pottery Barn are easy to install and can elevate a space without breaking the bank. "Be sure they’re mounted at least 8" overhead or else it'll feel too low," advises Kat.

If you can afford it, then built-in lights like the ones pictured above, "add both safety and ambiance", according to Aaron.

"A fire pit is a great way to add a focal point to a patio. You can find affordable DIY paver fire pit kits at many home retail stores, which allow you to easily construct a classic fire pit," says Joe.

The Home Depot's Grand 48 in. Fire Pit Kit is rated 4.5 stars by hundreds of shoppers and comes in three colors.

Rafi agrees. "If you're thinking about having a fire pit on your small patio, it's definitely a good idea to opt for a portable one. This will make the space much more flexible," he says. 

Rafi recommends the Winnerwell flat pack model from Amazon. "It's large enough to get a respectable fire going or even to use for grilling, but it also folds up completely for easy storage."

If you want a more permanent structure, then Kat recommends gas fire pits (such as the Kinzie concrete propane fire pit from Wayfair) for areas with high wind and fire risk. 

She adds, "If your property allows it and has a generous noncombustible patio such as stone or concrete, then a wood burning fire pit is a good option and will provide more warmth."

11. Use side space

To squeeze every inch out of your patio, you may want to consider adding pavers down the side of your house or apartment, if there's room. 

"This paver patio (above) turns a nearly unused side yard into a welcoming space that maximizes the way these homeowners can enjoy their outdoors," says Aaron.

"Outdoor rugs can bring a sense of warmth and help to define the space," says Cate.

"If you’ve got an extra sunny patio, definitely treat yourself to lavender plants, available on Amazon, which will thrive in a container with freely-draining soil. Other herbs do well in pots as well."

 "Small outdoor patios are great secluded places for quiet time by yourself," says Rafi. "We usually think of patios as entertaining spaces, but there's a lot to love about spending time by yourself in nature."

Painting garden furniture is a great way to protect your outdoor furniture from the elements and give it a quick refresh.

Wooden outdoor furniture is especially vulnerable to weather damage, so even if you don't want to paint it a different color, you should apply a protective wood stain. Making sure the paint lasts and holds up against the elements all year round is tricky, but it’s all in the prep work and aftercare. 

As with painting indoor furniture, preparation is key. You want to start by removing any flaking or chipped paint from any wooden furniture, treat any rust spots on metal and patch or glue any cracks in plastic. Giving your paint the perfect base will not only make your paint last longer but give it a professional-looking finish too. 

Gone are the days when exterior wood paint was brown or brown, now you can find almost as many shades as you can for indoors. We love sage greens and blues, which provide the perfect backdrop for plants.

How to paint wooden outdoor furniture

Most wooden outdoor furniture is made from pressure-treated wood, like fences and decking. Though they are designed to hold up in all weathers, they do need treating to protect them from rot. You can stain, oil, or paint wooden outdoor furniture in any shade you want, whether that’s a natural wood shade or something bright and colorful. 

There are many different types of external wood paint you can use, including shed and fence paint which can also be used to paint furniture. Some even have water repellent properties like Cuprinol Ducks Back which causes water to bead and roll straight off. 

A great paint for garden furniture is the Frenchic Al Fresco range (you can grab at Amazon) which has a primer and sealer built-in, as well as being self-leveling. Just give the chair a light sand with 120 grit and use a chalk paint brush to coat it in 2-3 coats. A good primer to use on exterior wood is Zinsser’s Bullseye 123 or Cover Stain. Primer, however, does raise the grain of wood so will need a good sand after priming, then perhaps a second coat of primer to ensure a perfectly smooth finish.

• If your wooden furniture is brand new, then now's the perfect time to apply a coat of paint to protect it from the elements. If your furniture is a year or two old, then have a look at the timber and see what condition it's in. Remove any chipped or dented timber and lumps of existing paint with a stiff wire brush.
• If there are any holes or cracks, use wood filler to repair the damage. With a putty knife, work the filler into any holes or cracks. Then leave to dry and repeat, if necessary.
• Sanding the furniture will give a good base for the paint to stick to. Make sure you pop on a mask to protect you from any dust. Start sanding with a coarse-grain paper, such as 80 grit, and then finish with a finer grain, such as 220 grit, to create a really smooth finish. 
• A sandpaper block is best for tabletops and flat surfaces, but you'll need sheets of sandpaper to get between slats or around legs.
• Sanding the furniture will give a good base for the paint to stick to. Make sure you pop on a mask to protect you from any dust. Start sanding with a coarse-grain paper, such as 80 grit, and then finish with a finer grain, such as 220 grit, to create a really smooth finish. A sandpaper block is best for tabletops and flat surfaces, but you'll need sheets of sandpaper to get between slats or around legs.
• Once you're finished sanding, use a large, clean paintbrush or a vacuum with a brush attachment to clean off any dust. Then, use a detergent, such as sugar soap, to remove any grease from the surface and leave it to air dry. This will help the paint to stick.
• Now it's time to get painting. Try to pick a day that's warm but not too hot as this can stop the paint from drying correctly. Make sure you pop down a dust sheet or old blanket to protect your patio or lawn from any paint spills.
• If the furniture has never been painted before, then it's worth applying a coat of wood primer and leaving this to dry before applying your first coat of paint.
• When you're ready to start painting, stir the paint well and then use a brush to apply it, paying attention to any nooks and crannies.
• Leave the first coat of paint to dry for the time specified by the manufacturer on the tin and then apply your second coat. It's better to apply two thin layers of paint than one thick, gloopy layer. Leave to dry and then sit back and admire your handiwork.
  

How to paint plastic furniture 

Painting plastic outdoor furniture is one of the easiest materials to paint as it’s already smooth. 

Like with anything you paint, you want to ensure the surface is completely clean and dry. If your furniture is old, it may not have the smoothest surface, so you’ll want to give it a sand with a 220 grit. 

For newer furniture, you can still do this step to create a key for the paint if the surface is high gloss. 

• Prime the surface with a plastic (latex-based) primer paint, usually in a can. I really like Rustoleum’s Plastic Primer. Priming increases your paint’s durability and creates a great surface for painting. 
• Rustoleum also do a good Direct to Plastic spray paint which doesn’t require a primer, but in personal experience, I never skip a primer, even for paints that claim not to need one. Once dry, you can go in with your color paint.
• Satin or gloss finish is best for plastic furniture, so once you’ve chosen your color spray paint (easiest with these surfaces), shake the can for 60 seconds, keep the can upright and spray 25-30cm away from the piece of furniture and keep the can moving from side to side slowly and evenly coat the surface in a light coat. 
• Allow the full dry time and repeat with another 1-2 coats until fully opaque. Aiming for full coverage in the first coat or spraying too close can put your surface at risk of drip marks you’ll then need to sand off and re-paint.
• You should not need to seal this surface, but Rustoleum’s Crystal Clear lacquer is a great protector for all surfaces and make your paint last longer outdoors.

How to paint metal garden furniture

Metal requires a little extra prep work as it’s prone to rust. You will need to remove any rust or flaking areas, which can be done with a wire brush or sandpaper with 120 grit. If the furniture doesn’t require de-rusting, you can go straight in with 240-grit sandpaper to key the surface for painting. Next, you’ll want to clean or degrease the surface and leave to dry fully.

The primer you’ll want to use for metal should have anti-rust properties, so something like Hammerite’s No1 Rust Beater Primer & Undercoat. 

Going for a grey primer is great if you’re going to paint it a darker color, or in white, if painting a lighter color as it will make the color more vibrant and help cover any existing paint color. You can just brush this on, ensuring your paint in the same direction for even coverage and low brush marks.

• To paint, you can go in with a spray paint like Hammerite Metal Paint which also comes in a tin. 
• Many wood paints can also be used on metal so make sure to read the label to find out what surfaces your paint can be used on. There are three different finishes you can get with metal paint – Gloss, Satin, or Matt. 
• Once you’ve decided what type of paint you want to use, either brush it on in thin, even layers, allowing for adequate dry time in between each coat, or spray it on, again in light coats, keeping the spray moving and at a steady speed.
• You shouldn’t need to seal this paint either, so once you’ve done your final coat, you’re ready to use your newly spruced-up bistro set.

Like many of us, I am obsessed with achieving the perfect garden space to relax and unwind in. Outdoor furniture is an important part of creating that cosy place but like many, I find it hard to maintain it because they often take a battering from the external conditions they are subject to.

One of the first pieces of outdoor furniture I ever bought was a pair of SKARPÖ plastic tub chairs from Ikea. These are lightweight, affordable, and surprisingly comfortable to lounge around in. Plus, they were ideal for the terrace I had at the time. 

Initiailly, I purchased the white version of the chairs as I thought they looked very chic. And, as they are plastic, I figured they would be pretty durable and wouldn't face the same issues with water as a lot of wooden furniture does...

Project inspiration

When I moved to a house with a large garden with mature trees I placed the chairs I had at the end, under the shade of said trees (one of my favourite places to sit). 

After my first winter there though it became apparent that my positioning of these chairs wasn’t the greatest idea. The debris from the pine tree above had left my stylish white chairs looking a bit grubby. Of course, I shouldn’t have left them out all winter but I did and it meant that no matter how hard I tried to bring them back to white – after previous successes when cleaning patio furniture – I couldn't get them back to the perfect white. 

I decided my only remedy was to paint them. I was a little bit concerned because I wasn’t sure what type of paint to use to cope with the outdoor conditions whilst also being durable enough to cope with the friction of someone sitting in it. It did however create a fun DIY project opportunity to completely change the colour of the chairs.

How to paint IKEA SKARPÖ chairs step-by-step

I had recently painted a fence and shed using Rustoleum’s Garden paint and noticed that the label said it was for “Rigid Plastic”. As I had some leftover, I thought I would give it a go. The thing I love about their garden paint is that it comes in 110 shades in a chalky finish. Most outdoor paints have a limited colour range in my experience and this has the benefits of a matt finish and no priming necessary.

I had a leftover tin of a colour called “Pink Champagne” which is a lovely pale tone and I thought was perfect for the chairs.

1. Hose the chairs down

First of all, make sure your chairs are clean from debris and dirt. I did this by hosing off the chairs to get rid of any excess then used a household multi-surface cleanser to wipe off any remaining residue. Before I added any paint I made sure the surface was dry by using a dish or microfiber cloth.

2. Apply the paint

To apply the paint I used a simple roller but a brush is fine also. The paint is quite thick in consistency which is common with many outdoor paints. Mix the paint inside the tin before applying and pour into a paint tray or container. Be careful of drips falling from the paint roller/brush, it’s a hard paint to remove if you get it somewhere unintended.

3. Give them a second coat

Lay down a dust sheet and place the chair on top of it to protect the ground. The chair is quite textured so use short strokes of the brush to make sure you get all of the surface. You want to apply the paint quite thinly so it doesn’t clump up in any places. Take your time covering the entire area, taking care to do the legs fully as well. 

The coverage is really good, I have barely used any of my 750ml tin to paint 2 chairs with 2 coats each. The 2nd coat wasn’t completely necessary but because of the textured finish on the chair I had noticed some small white spots coming through that I missed the first time.

The results: 

How have the chairs held up?

Short answer is, really well. I was expecting some flaking over time but didn’t get any and the chairs were well used. The refreshed IKEA SKARPÖ chairs have been outside for over a year and the paint did not disappoint. The only problem I had was I left them under a tree again for another year so they got very dirty... I have to stop doing that! 

I did clean them and they came up pretty well but I decided to paint them again (using the same tin of paint from the previous year) and they came up good as new.

What is composite decking?

'Composite decking is a composite material that contains both wood and plastic.' explains Allan Jeffrey, managing director of Ultra Decking.

'These two materials are what make up the composite decking board. Wood-plastic decking boards are visually more appealing than wood and often need less maintenance.'

'Composite decking material tends to last longer because it is less prone to damage. A wood-plastic deck will not crack and splinter like wood and is resistant to insects that cause damage to wood. This means that termites cannot damage a composite board. This means a composite board can span up to 30 years and above.'

What are the different types of composite decking?

Composite decking uses a mix of recycled wood and plastic so you get the best of both worlds. Benefitting from both the durability of plastic and the natural look of wood, it's perfect for flooring projects inside and outside of the home.

'When it comes to decking construction, your budget and project type can help you decide on the best type of composite for you.' advises Jeffrey.

Here he lays out the advantages of each material type so you can see which composite decking is best suited for your outdoor space.

• Solid composite decking: Solid composite decking boards are the easiest composite decking boards to manufacture. They are strong, durable, long-lasting, and look like real wood. Solid composite boards are a great choice; however, they do have some disadvantages. They are considerably more expensive, heavier, and harder to work with, and are also more prone to shrinking, expanding, and warping due to moisture.
• Hollow composite decking: Hollow composite decking, unlike solid boards, are lightweight - making them cheaper and easier to work with, whilst still being a sturdy choice. As the name suggests, they are manufactured with hollowed portions within the boards, making them perfect for installing cables and wires. Hollow boards are also less susceptible to shrinkage or expansion caused by different weather conditions.  However, they can look less like wood, and may be more prone to damage from heavier impact. With that said, new machine technology borrowed from the aerospace and car industries has improved strength, durability, and appearance.  
• Uncapped vs capped composites: Uncapped composites are typically first-generation boards, which, despite being strong and durable, are more vulnerable to damage from mold and mildew, meaning they need to be maintained regularly to prevent damage.  Sales for this type of composite board are decreasing in favor of capped composite decking, which has a special coating that helps to prevent damage from mold, mildew, staining, and UV fading. This makes them easier to clean and maintain and can provide a dual-color design, with differing surface colors and patterns on each site, allowing buyers to reverse the boards after years of use. 

What should I look for when buying composite decking?

Balance quality and cost

Let's get things straight – decking isn't exactly the cheapest of garden ideas. But one of the biggest decking mistakes homeowners can make is compromising quality over price.

'It can be tempting to use low-priced materials, even if they are low-quality. However, you will eventually spend more money if you prioritize getting lower prices over quality,' warns Jeffrey.

'Likewise, buying expensive composite decking may not all be worth it to some people. Not everyone has a big budget to spend. Consider balancing quality over cost to get the most out of your money. Is the price reasonable for its features? If expensive, do they have advantages that other composite decking boards lack? If you are on a budget and choosing cheaper options, is the quality good enough for the price?'

'To get the best composite decking, look for composites of a superior make. Go with capped composite decking boards. Opting for anti-slip, fade-resistant and stain-free decking boards is very much worth it.'

'Composite decking is resistant to moisture, which is the worst enemy of wooden decking. When wooden boards absorb water, it expands. It shrinks back to its original size as it drains or releases moisture, causing boards to expand or shrink faster than others and warp, bend, and crack. While composites still shrink and expand due to the wood fibers in their makeup, the rate of expansion and contraction is more uniform throughout the board. The plastic fibers also help to keep the shape intact, making composites resistant to warping and bending.'

'Composites also can withstand mold growth and rot. When mold and mildew grow on the surface of wooden decking, it's only a matter of time before wooden boards begin to rot. While fungi don't necessarily cause decay, they will increase the ability of wood to absorb moisture, which leads to rotting. As composite decking is impervious to these kinds of damage, it has a far superior lifespan.'

'Lastly, composites age differently compared to wood and plastic, especially when exposed to harmful UV rays from the sun. Constant exposure to UV rays causes wood to lose its color and turn grey. Composite decking still fades, but is only slightly lightened in color compared to plastic which fades at a much faster rate.'

Some manufacturers and suppliers offer composite boards at various price points, giving you the freedom to choose how much to spend on materials. Choose a brand that has high resistance to fading, staining, and slips. You also have a choice of colors and designs. Look out for occasional discounts, special offers, and limited-time deals.

Composite decking vs. wood

Alternatives to composite decking: PVC decking

If you're not fussed about a wood-plastic hybrid mix, consider PVC decking. Do note, however, that it is a more costly choice, but Jeffrey explains why you may or may not want to go forward with this material.

He says: 'PVC decking is similar to composite decking. But it differs from composite in that it contains only plastic. Similar to composite, PVC decking is also durable and long-lasting, but it is often more expensive than composite decking. In addition, PVC decking is synthetic and doesn’t have the aesthetics of natural wood or quality composite.'

What is the most durable decking material?

When it comes to how to install a deck, you want to use the most durable and longest-lasting materials available. Durability can mean a couple of things. First, it can pertain to the ability of a material to resist or withstand damage. It can also determine how long a deck would last. For this reason, the jury's out when it comes to deciding which composite decking is best.

Some of the commonly used materials for decking are softwood, hardwood, pressure-treated wood, plastic, composites and aluminium. 

To help you decide which one to use, let's go over how durable each material is. 

Aluminium: Aluminium decking is the least used material for residential decking and is more common in industrial settings. However, aluminium decking is best suited near your above-ground pool design (as part of a pool deck idea) or if you own a hot tub. This is because they are resistant to most types of damage including rust, which can happen in wet areas. 

Despite what it seems, aluminium decking stays cool even in the hottest weather. The downside is that aluminium decking is significantly more expensive than all other decking options. Regarding their appearance, aluminium is not something that most homeowners prefer. 

Aluminium decking can last for a lifetime. However, very few people build decks using aluminium due to their appearance and high cost. Without a doubt, aluminium decking is the most durable decking material. However, it's not for everyone. Alternatively, you can use composite decking materials lasting for 30-50 years with the advantage of plastic without losing its wood-like appearance. 

Softwoods: Softwoods are the cheapest and most common decking material. They are the least durable decking material since they are less dense and weaker than the other available decking options. Wood is also susceptible to mold growth, weather damage, splitting, and splintering. In addition, they are the least fire-resistant.

A softwood deck can last for 10-15 years if maintained properly. Maintenance includes regular cleaning, staining, sealing, and painting. If not taken care of properly, the service life of softwoods is significantly reduced.

Hardwoods: Hardwoods are a step up above softwoods. They are denser and more durable than softwood. They come from slow-growing, deciduous trees. Due to their density, they are more resistant to moisture, fire and insect damage. They are still prone to fading from UV exposure and other problems attributed to wood. 

Since hardwoods are thicker, they are harder to work with and more expensive than softwoods. Hardwoods last exceptionally longer than softwoods. They can last for at least 25 years with regular maintenance including cleaning, oiling your deck (using the best decking oil) and refinishing it every few years.

Pressure-treated woods: pressure-treated (PT) woods are covered with chemicals to add more protection. They are more resistant to rotting, weather and insect damage. However, because of the chemical coating, burning them can be toxic. PT woods last slightly longer than their non-pressure-treated counterparts. This means that depending on the quality of the timber; it can last for more than 25 years, again with proper care and maintenance.

Plastic: plastic decking is produced with various types of polymers and synthetic materials making them resistant to most types of damage. A big problem with plastic is that it can heat up quite fast in hot weather and can be very slippery when wet. On top of that, they don't look very natural. As for longevity, plastic decks can last for about 25-30 years and are also low maintenance. 

Composites: Composite decking materials are produced with recycled plastic and wood fibers often called wood-plastic composites (WPC). They combine the best attributes of the two materials. They are more resistant to mould growth, splitting, splintering, UV fading, and weather damage due to their plastic fibers. And the best thing is that have the beauty and appearance of real wood.

Composite decking can last for more than 25 years. Some manufacturers even claim that they can last for 50 years. They are also low maintenance, requiring only regular cleaning.

What are the disadvantages of composite decking?

Composites can't be painted: If you are a person who loves redecorating and repainting decking, composites may not be the best for you. Unlike wood, painting a composite decking can do more harm than good, as most paint won't adhere to the surface of most composite boards. To paint decking like a pro, you will need to sand the boards, which will damage the capping and remove all its protection from moisture and molds. 

Composite decking may get hot: Because composites have plastic fibers, they can get hotter faster than wooden decking. For this reason, you may want to prepare decking cooling methods if you do prefer to use composites. You can use outdoor rugs, garden parasols, and even your best portable air conditioning units to cool your decking. Compared to pure plastic decking, however, composites are much more heat resistant. PVC decking tends to warp due to high temperatures, whereas composite decking retains its shape better.

Composites may become slippery: As with other synthetic decking, composite decking can be slippery. However, for a better and safer choice, you may opt to use wood grain or textured boards for added friction. You can also install non-slip decking strips to make it safer. 

While resistant to molds, fungi can grow on dirt and debris on your decking. These, too, can make any decking, whether it's plastic, wood, or composites, more slippery. For this reason, composites also need regular cleaning. 

Generally, composite decking materials are not as slippy when compared to PVC and wood. In some cases, it may become slippery if fallen leaves and debris accumulate, and older generations of composite materials may also absorb more moisture causing mold and moss that can make a deck more slippery. 

Ways to help prevent your deck from becoming slippery: Always keep your composite decking clean. Remove fallen leaves, pollen, dirt, and debris from your deck. These can cause the growth of mold and fungi. If you observe spots or stains, immediately scrub them. 

Although composite decking does not absorb moisture, any surface water can still be a breeding ground for mold and algae. Keep composite dry during winter, and allow for proper drainage of rainfall. Keep the gaps or spaces between the boards clean to allow water to flow to the ground easily. Boards with grains or grooves can also improve slip resistance.

Patio decorating mistakes poo-pooing your plans? Let's face it, there's nothing better than soaking up some sun or enjoying a little alfresco dining on your paved space. But if your outdoor living area is clearly in need of some love, could it be that you're making some of the most common decorating faux-pas?

The heart of every backyard, your patio has so much potential and a well-designed space can go a long way to make even a tiny spot feel welcoming and cozy. So, before you dive into the best patio ideas, listen to the experts and make sure you are aware of the errors that can derail your outdoor project.

The worst patio decorating mistakes, according to experts

A poorly-designed patio can make you reluctant to use this space for your best grills, relaxing and the like, making it appear smaller than it is, or even worse, resulting in you having to redo your patio hardscaping... Take note for a super stylish outdoor space this year and beyond.

1. Not spending enough on outdoor furnishings

The first – and probably most common – patio decorating mistake is scrimping on outdoor furnishings. Or, if you do opt for budget garden ideas, not treating them as well as you do your interior items, according to garden designer Chris Harrington.

We've all seen the highly stylized patio areas that look great on Pinterest – outdoor living spaces are all the rage right now. But if that's the look you're going for, Harrington warns against buying cheap decor. 'Anyone can get stuff for a photo shoot and make it look nice,' he comments. But do these garden rooms continue to look good in the reality of daily life?

According to Harrington, 'the reality of those cheaper products is that if you leave them outside for any length of time, they're going to deteriorate. If you're going to dress everything to the nth degree, acknowledge that you've got to take everything in, or you've got to invest in proper external stuff.'

The HarringtonPorter creative director also argues that many of the outdoor furnishings that pop up on Google aren't really fit for purpose: 'It's fine for a few months, but give it six months outside and all these garden lighting ideas will rust, the rugs will deteriorate, and the cushions will fill with water through the zips.'

This doesn't mean you have to spend a fortune on outdoor furnishings, but investing in items from a trusted outdoor furnishings retailer will save you money in the long run.

2. Forgetting outdoor storage

Harrington also reminds us of the importance of outdoor storage. 'You can dress your patio like you dress an indoor space, but make sure to have storage in your garden to put everything away,' he says.

'Be prepared that you can't leave throws and outdoor cushions that are making these desirable photos outside. Having storage outside is a really good idea, just don't build them into your garden bench,' he adds. Well-planned garden storage ideas will make a huge difference to your patio. 

3. Botched DIY jobs

Laying patio pavers – easy, right? Adding drainage – just watch a YouTube video! Well, it's important to be realistic about your DIY skills. 

Calum Maddock from HomeHow warns that 'if you’re no good at DIY, don’t try and botch a job of repairing or laying a brick patio; hire a professional. It will look better, last longer, and save you money in the long run.'

Trust us, you don't want to DIY a patio only to discover a year later that the pavers have moved...

4. Failing to plan the space

Interior designer and co-founder of La Di Da Interiors, Steph Briggs, told us that not planning out a space before filling it with furniture is one of the worst patio decorating mistakes you can make. 'If you are going to create an area on your patio for socializing or alfresco dining, think about the flow through and into the house,' she says. 

'You don't want to be stepping over people or furniture to gain access to the kitchen! If you are shopping for furniture, layout boxes or mats to the size and shape of the furniture to get an idea of scale and setting before you buy.' Even the best patio furniture will not look good if you haven't thought through the layout. 

5. Using indoor cushions on outdoor furniture 

This patio decorating mistake is similar to the first one. Even if you do invest in expensive furnishings from a great brand, if they're indoor-only – you're in trouble. Jamie Penney, who runs and operates thebackyardpros.com, has plenty of experience designing patios and outdoor living spaces for clients. 

One of the most common patio mistakes she's seen is 'using indoor cushions on
outdoor furniture. This is a no-no. These cushions accumulate water and get
moldy quickly. Always use outdoor rated cushions for outdoor furniture.'

You don't have to use the ones your furniture came with, but you do need to always check that your cushions can withstand the elements. It helps to be sure that you can clean your outdoor cushions properly, too.  FYI, most pillow liners can be popped into the washing machine on your usual laundry setting.

Likewise don't go using your very expensive vintage area mat outside. There are plenty of good outdoor rugs out there including beautiful options from Ruggable (available to buy on Amazon).

6. Not watching what your dog does in your backyard

It's completely understandable to want to enjoy your backyard with your pooch. However, not training them to pee only in a designated area (away from your expertly-designed patio) can have dire consequences. Depending on what your pavers are made from, dog urine can leave marks that are hard to remove even with the best patio cleaner and/or pressure washer.

Penney also urges pet owners to prevent their dogs from 'urinating on your wooden deck. This causes severe discoloration on the deck requiring power washing and sanding. It also can damage the wood, causing rot.' If you can afford to, introduce a  deck railing idea to fence off the space from your furry friend. It's not guaranteed to keep them away, but it is a physical barrier to deter your dog from doing its business nearby.

Alternatively, grabbing some Amazon Basics puppy pads can help to direct your doggo to the toilet (relieving you from cleaning the deck frequently). And of course, good behavior needs to be rewarded, so pop some dog treats in the basket too!

Aside from the strong ammonia-heavy scent, if you like eating outside, it's incredibly unhygienic to have your outdoor dining ideas next to your dog's squat spot.

7. Growing incorrect plants for your climate zone

Penney recalls once visiting a backyard where 'all the plants were in rough condition, some were completely dead. The reason was the owner had planted plants that were NOT to be planted in this zone/climate.'

Not even the best-designed patio will look good with dead plants all around it, so 'knowing what plants you are growing in your garden will make or break its appearance. Discuss with a local garden expert before you get started.'

If you're blessed with regular warm weather, then opt for full sun plants to add color and interest around your patio. On the flip side, if you're an amateur gardener go down the container gardening route instead.

If you don't succeed with your first set of flowers, you can take the wilted foliage out of your pots and planters and replace it with something new (read: easier to look after).

8. Using too much patio furniture

We get it. Patio furniture comes in handy when you have lots of family and friends around, so many people think that you need extra patio furniture to make those garden party ideas a reality. 

However, the truth is that cramming your backyard with patio furniture is likely to backfire. Lindsey Hyland, gardening expert and founder of Urban Organic Yield, calls using too much patio furniture one of the worst patio decorating mistakes she's encountered: 'It's really important to remember that less is more, and you want to leave plenty of open space for people to move around comfortably.'

This is especially the case if new acquaintances aren't familiar with your backyard arrangement. A simple garden paving idea can help visitors navigate around the external area much more easily. And, a creative design can keep kids entertained for hours (not to mention keep them away from digging up the flower bed you've been working on!)

Size matters when you're searching for a patio dining set too. You want something that'll accommodate all your guests but at the same time, they shouldn't be sitting elbow-to-elbow.

9. Using busy, clashing prints

Again, social media is a little to blame for this common patio decorating mistake. Filtered images can make even the wildest graphic prints look cool. The reality, though, is that going for very bold, clashing patterns and prints 'can be really jarring against the natural backdrop of your garden', according to Hyland. Instead, 'try sticking to solid colors or simple stripes, and avoid mixing too many different textures together.'

Remember backyard trends go in and out of fashion, so if in doubt keep it classic, especially if you're looking for ideas for a small garden as too many contrasting designs can make your external space feel teeny.

This one goes beyond a simple design mistake – get this wrong, and your whole patio could go up in flames. While a great BBQ or the best pizza oven can make a backyard party a lot of fun, you need to be sensible about where you place any equipment with open flames. 

Tansy Millard, a designer at Floorlampstyle recalls a real horror story involving a homeowner placing their BBQ directly under a patio roof: 'When her husband fired up the barbecue, the plastic netting under the roof caught light. This caused the husband and guests to attempt to extinguish the blaze. Sparks flew around, and (inevitably, some would say) sparks landed on the delicate paper lampshade that the lady of the house had dragged out of the house to light up the rather gloomy patio area. An anxious guest threw a bucket of ice over the lamp, completely ruining it. What a mess!' 

The moral of the story? 'Be sensitive about placing BBQ area ideas, pizza ovens, and firepits or the like, on or near patios. And avoid placing flammable textiles on a patio, where the wind blows and sparks fly.'

And be sensible with where you put your patio heater. While it'll keep you warm in winter, sudden rain and thunder can be dangerous to those sitting next to it, even if it's not an open-flame design. Water and electricity do not mix people.

If you're in the market for a new BBQ but are searching for something small yet mighty, then the Weber Smokey Joe might be what you are after. We've been working hard to test a range of BBQs, from gas models to charcoal grills and even hybrid options, so how could we forget the undoubtedly handy portable BBQ? For those of us who have smaller gardens or yards, or for the people who only use their grill a handful of times a year, a portable model is a great alternative.

The Weber Smokey Joe is compact, as well as easy to use. We used it to test a huge range of food, from burgers to chicken wings and even an entire Tomahawk steak. And it's safe for us to say that everything we cooked on this BBQ tasted like perfection. It performs just as well as a regular-size BBQ, but with the convenience of taking up zero floor space. What's not to love?

I've been testing lots of portable BBQs, from practical options to design-savvy buys. Namely, I've tested Heston Blumenthal's The Cube, I'm currently testing another Weber BBQ and I have the popular BergHOFF portable BBQ on the go, too. I'll be comparing all of these BBQs once I've made my verdict, but so far the Smokey Joe is my favorite.

Unboxing the Weber Smokey Joe

Whilst we admittedly forgot to take a photo of this BBQ in its box, it did arrive in a compact package that's easy enough for one person to carry. It's easy to put together and you only have to attach the legs and the handles. Just don't screw them on too tight or you might risk damaging it.

Parts of the grill came wrapped in plastic, but it wasn't a huge amount. The waste to dispose of wasn't a crazy amount, either. Especially in comparison to other BBQs we have tested.

Our first impressions of this BBQ were that it's quite simple to use, and also sturdy when in use. We weren't so keen on the tuck-n-carry lid at first as it didn't seem that secure. We didn't really know what to expect until we started cooking.

Ease of use

First of all: don't forget to open the side vents and the lid vents before you light your BBQ. This allows air to flow through the grill and ensures better cooking results. How long it took until it was ready to cook on changed each time we lit this BBQ, depending on the actual charcoal we used, but it was ready within roughly 15–20 minutes. 

The first time you light the BBQ, it's recommended to keep it lit for at least 30 minutes before cooking anything. This is to burn off any residue from the manufacturing process.

How to know the quantity of charcoal to use? This BBQ comes with a handy charcoal cup to help you measure.

We tested this BBQ in a number of locations (as it is a portable BBQ after all), and in a number of situations. First of all, I tested it at home on my terrace, cooking for just me and my partner. We started off simple with some pork and corn on the cobs. 

Then, I took this BBQ to my parents' house, as they were hosting a garden party and wanted to cook their guests burgers. We used this BBQ to cook burgers for around 20 people, in batches, and both the first and the last burger (and all burgers in between) were perfectly cooked, with compliments from guests. The third time we used this BBQ we tested it cooking a range of meats, from kebabs to lamb and also a Tomahawk steak.

Overall, our experience with this BBQ was nothing but positive. It's super convenient and fuss-free and it essentially does exactly what it says on the tin. It's the ultimate BBQ if you want something that can simply just cook your food, and well at that.

Cooking burgers and small cuts of meat
We tested this burger with several small cuts of meat, from pork to lamb, and also with chicken skewers and your average beef burger. We noticed it cooks quite fast with its lid on, as you'd expect, and its cooking area is plenty enough to fit quite a few items of food on there at one time. You could easily fit eight burgers on this grill at any time. It also has a hinged lid that you can make use of when there's a breeze, to prevent your BBQ from going out, or to keep the heat in on one side of it.

Burgers took around 15 minutes to cook, max. The lid also concealed the smoke to give these burgers a great smokey taste, and to help melt the cheese fast. 

Cooking a larger joint of meat
We used this portable BBQ to cook a sizeable Tomahawk steak, to test its cooking abilities. When cooking the Tomahawk steak, we let it sit on the BBQ for around 12 minutes on either side. Then, we took it off and wrapped it in foil to allow it to cook a little more on standing. We were very impressed that a BBQ this size, and with such basic features, managed to cook this large joint so well. Not only was it cooked to perfection, but the outer layer of this joint had so much flavor. It really was impressive.

We should note that we cooked this joint after cooking smaller bits of meat, so the BBQ had slightly cooled down already. We probably wouldn't suggest putting it on the BBQ first as it might burn with the BBQ being too hot. Otherwise, you can indirectly cook a joint this size on this BBQ, by arranging the coals to sit on either side of the bbq, leaving the middle of the grill coal-less.

Cooking veggies and skewers
We managed to cook corn on the cobs on this BBQ whilst testing it, and also chicken skewers, too.

Both cooked well, with nothing much else to report other than they took as long as we'd imagine. We, of course, wrapped the corn on the cobs in foil. And with the skewers, we placed the sticks hanging off the side of the BBQ. You can fit quite a few skewers on this BBQ at one time, handily enough.

Cleaning the Weber Smokey Joe

Once you've finished cooking on this BBQ, you can close all of the vents to distinguish it faster.

Since this grill is nice and portable, it's very easy to clean. It stays hot for quite a while, so you're best to leave it overnight and clean it the next day. Just remove and soak the grates, and then empty the ash and leftover charcoal. Give it a wipe-down all around, inside and out.

Since we tested the black version of this BBQ, we cannot comment on whether the other colors stain after use. But rest assured we didn't notice any cosmetic blemishes after cooking on the black version of this BBQ several times. Something to bear in mind! 

Storage and maintenance

The Weber Smokey Joe is easy to store, inside or out, and since it's compact you can simply just carry it into your garage or tuck it underneath furniture outside, after cleaning.

A great feature of this BBQ is its tuck-n-carry lock lid. Essentially, the stand that you use to put the lid on a hinge whilst cooking can also be used to neatly pack this grill away. And to carry it from destination A to destination B. The only thing we will say about this feature is that as great as it is, it doesn't feel the most secure. If you've been out BBQing at the beach or at someone's house and your grill is full of ash, then you might want to put it in a bag to avoid possible spillage whilst driving. So, while it is portable, we wouldn't recommend putting it on the back of a bike or walking it somewhere as it's quite uncomfortable to hold for long amounts of time, and as previously mentioned, it's not the most secure. 

If you are searching for a secure BBQ that's super portable, the Everdure Cube is brilliant but it doesn't come with a lid. Otherwise, the Weber Go Anywhere is portable, a little larger and it has a lid.

How does the Weber Smokey Joe rate online?

Simply enough (and unsurprisingly) this portable grill rates positively online. The only negative reviews claim that the enamel on their BBQs lid had cracked. This doesn't impact cooking but cosmetically, it obviously doesn't look great. We've not had this experience with our Smokey Joe. Other negative comments say it's not the most secure when the tuck-n-carry lock lid is put to use. 

Reviewers on Amazon give this BBQ 4.3-stars out of 5. The majority of people love this BBQ and comment on how easy and convenient it is to use, as well as its compact size. 

Customers from John Lewis & Partners rate the Weber Smokey Joe 4.6 stars out of 5. They say it's excellent quality and great value, with comments on its portability, how easy it is to clean, and its compact size.

Over at Walmart, this grill boasts a 4.7-star rating out of 5 with reviewers questioning how they ever lived without it. Lots of people commented on how it's an ideal camping BBQ.

How does it compare to similar models and its predecessors?

Weber sells two portable BBQs, this one and the Weber Go Anywhere. Luckily, we've tested both of these grills so can offer a comparison below.

The Weber Smokey Joe is your best bet if you're looking for something small, for use mostly at home and to feed around two to four people at one time. The Go Anywhere, however, neatly tucks away to travel anywhere with you (hence the name) and it offers a larger cooking space. It can be used to cook for more people with its rectangular cooking space. 

These two BBQs are admittedly quite similar, but they differ in price with the Smokey Joe coming in at £99.99, and the Go Anywhere at £109.99. The Go Anywhere also comes in a gas version.

Should you buy the Weber Smokey Joe?

In one word: yes. We love this grill due to how versatile it is, and because it's so easy to use and store. If you're tempted to buy a BBQ but don't want something you have to wheel in and out of your garage, cover when not in use, or even if buying and storing a gas bottle for a gas BBQ is putting you off, then this is a great pick. It also takes up zero floor space, you can use it atop an outdoor table to cook your food. It's fuss-free and totally worth your money when it comes to quality.

For me, it is the perfect little BBQ. I have a small amount of outside space in my garden that's only protected by a short gate. So, this portable BBQ is ideal for bringing inside after use. We also rarely cook for more than four people, but to know that this BBQ can cope with that is great. 

 About this review, and the reviewer

Annie tested the Weber Smokey Joe over a few months, and she used it a total of 4 times. Once it was used just to cook for two people, but the other times it cooked for more than eight people at a time and it still managed to do a good job.

To avoid making these disastrous decking mistakes you'll need to be cautious about your approach, especially if you're trying your hand at decking to save some money.

Decking your backyard out with a stable foundation is a fine way to finish your external scheme. However big or small your deck ideas are, paying your due diligence is a fundamental part of the process. From buying your boards to deciding on the space you want to cover, pest control, and futureproofing your outdoor floor, there are some crucial considerations to make if you're thinking about trying out this garden project.

So, we have spoken to the experts to find out what not to do...

1. You're installing it the wrong side up

Thought it was 'groovy' to have the textured side on top?

Despite the common belief that you should lay deck boards with the groove side up, it’s actually more effective to have the smooth side showing. This is because the grooves encourage air circulation beneath the deck which stops it from rotting. There’s no real extra grip achieved through having the ridges up and they can increase the difficulty of cleaning your deck.

'Laying your own decking may seem simple especially if you’re an experienced DIY-er but it doesn’t come without its difficulties,' says Harry Patte-Dobbs, garden expert at GardenBuildingsDirect.co.uk

'The most surprising thing people find they’re getting wrong is installing the decking with the grooves facing up. These grooves might only help with water runoff if built on an angle, so if you want your decking to last a long time it’s best to have the smooth side facing upwards.'

2. You've gone overboard with coverage

Make sure you carefully plan how much of your garden you want to cover with decking. Too little and you won’t have enough space to fit garden furniture and your deck planter ideas on. But too much and you can lose the natural feel of the garden - leaving no space for wildlife to flourish.

Whether you're planning for a large or small deck idea, getting your proportions right is essential for an attractive external aesthetic.

3. You've not allowed for gaps

As wood is a natural material it will expand and contract under different conditions. When humid, wooden decking can expand, and when it's cold can contract.

Composite decking won’t warp like real wood. However, it can change size depending on the climate. So it’s important to leave a gap between the boards, as it gives your deck adequate space to change without damaging the structural integrity

4. You're using poor-quality wood

They say a man is only as good as his tools, and the same could be said for building materials too. If you want durable decking, then it’s worth investing in good-quality hardwood or opting for composite decking instead of softwood. 

They're also less likely to become a safety hazard which will be top of mind if you like hosting and/or have a young family.

5. You're providing shelter for pests

Underneath the deck can become a rat’s new home if you don’t make sure there aren’t any gaps for them to crawl into. You can do this by filling in the deck frame with hardcore, soil, or any other available material.

If you want to be extra cautious, you can put chicken wire (easily found on Amazon) or mesh around the edge of the decking, although this may affect the overall aesthetic.

6. You're overcomplicating the design

As with most interior and exterior design: less is more. Especially when you’re doing a DIY job. Adding garden benches, backyard lighting ideas, and even your own DIY alternative planter designs are all ways to zhuzh up your decking but do these things separately. Adding too many deck decorating ideas can make it look cluttered and lead to mistakes when cutting and installing.

Having lots of stuff on your deck makes it harder to clean too. Dirt, moss, and algae can all ruin your decking, so it's important to use a deck cleaner to stop these things from degrading it.  

7. You're not sealing the deck straight away

If you don't want your deck to get destroyed by Mother Nature: seal it ASAP. Newly-installed wood is in the best condition to be coated and sealant is easy to come by. It can be found in most home improvement stores, and even online on Amazon.

The best decking oils can protect your outdoor floor from rain and UV sun damage and oiling a deck isn't as scary (or slippery) as it seems. If you want to add a splash of color, even quick-drying exterior wood paints and decking paints have weatherproofing properties in the formula. 

If you're lucky enough to have an outdoor pool, the right pool furniture will ensure you curate the perfect outdoor area.

1. Sweep the deck

It’s important to remove any loose debris and clean the decking before you start scrubbing as grit and sand can damage the decking boards and make it a lot harder to clean. Kids’ play sand and dirt can get stuck in the grooves so sweep from one end of the deck to the other going in the same direction as the boards.

2. Hose down

Once you’ve removed all the loose dirt and debris it's time to hose off the deck. A pressure washer is ideal if you have one, but take care not to hold the nozzle too close to the timber as this can cause splintering and damage. Use a decking cleaning attachment if possible.

3. Scrub

Once the boards are wet it’s time to get scrubbing. You can use a decking cleaning and restoring solution, alternatively, diluted dish soap works well. The more effort you put in here the better the end result will be, so it’s worth taking the time to get the boards and grooves clean. Keep a bucket of clean water close at hand to wash your scrubbing brush in. You should see the dirt lifting as you scrub, if not add more water and cleaning solution and leave to soak for a few minutes before trying again. The key to success is applying even pressure with the brush, covering every visible part of the boards, and not scrubbing too hard that you damage the surface.

Top Tip: Use a kneeling pad if scrubbing with a small hand brush, your knees will thank you!

4. Rinse

Once the deck has been thoroughly scrubbed, rinse again with the hose or pressure washer and check the results. Repeat the scrubbing on any areas which haven’t come up clean, as patches will ruin the end result.

5. Repair

Now the deck is clean, it’s time to repair any cracks or minor damage by sanding down and using wood filler. Broken or rotten boards should be replaced completely so we are only talking about superficial damage here.

6. Oil

So, you’ve done the hard bits, you’ve scrubbed and scrubbed, taken layers of dirt off, given the whole deck a new lease of life, (and promised yourself that you won’t let it get that bad again – or was that just me?!) so now comes the fun bit, applying your chosen decking oil. I used Ronseal's in natural which you can find on Amazon. Refer to the manufacturer’s guidelines for specific application instructions but here are my general tips.

7. Avoid splash marks

When you pour the oil out, don’t place your container on the deck as the oil can splash out and leave marks on the boards which are hard to cover.

8. Line the container

I don’t like to wash any oil (or paint for that matter) down the drain, so I only pour small amounts out at a time and I place a bag over the container holding the oil. That way when I’m finished I allow the last of the residue to dry on the bag ready to take it off and place it in the bin with no washing required.

9. Use a brush

Using a soft-bristled brush (I got mine from a set) makes light work of oiling grooved decking boards. Wipe excess oil off the brush first to prevent an uneven finish.

10. Patch test first

Test the oil in a discrete place before applying it widely to the deck, to ensure the color is as expected.

11. Make a plan

Don't get trapped in a corner! If your deck is raised or has balustrades or dancing around it, plan the order in which you apply the oil to the decking boards and work towards the entrance/exit, so you don’t end up trapped in a corner meaning you have to walk over the boards you’ve just oiled to leave the deck...

12. Don't overlap

Apply the oil to a few boards at a time and work from one end to the other to avoid lines or overlap which will result in a patchy, uneven finish.

When Jessica Nickerson of House Homemade wanted to spruce up her front yard space, she wanted a simple edit that wasn't going to be costly or time-consuming. 

Nickerson says 'I’ve been picturing a table and chairs in the mulch, under our live oak out front for a while. I wanted somewhere for more people to gather. Somewhere my two girls could have a snack with friends or we could sit with paperwork or a book.'

Finding the patio set to upgrade

Nickerson started by scouring Facebook Marketplace and found the perfect contender for a cheap DIY project that was going to deliver both aesthetically and functionally.

'I had been looking on and off for a few months. I wanted a simple style but something heavy and long lasting with a decent price tag and relatively close to home.'

I found the perfect set on Facebook Marketplace for $150, and bonus – the people happened to live IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD!!' A rare case I'm sure many of us agree.

Nickerson adds 'I didn't want to make this patio space fussy. It's a table sitting in mulch. I don’t want to buy cushions or bring out throw blankets or pillows. I want it to be an easy, unstyled but beautiful spot that adds to our life, not our workload. It'll withstand the elements and need paint touch-ups every now and then; that amount of maintenance sounds like a breath of fresh air.'

Prep and spray painting

As when you're painting any type of metal outdoor furniture, prep is key for a good finish. Try to remove any visible flakes and scrub/hose down the pieces as Nickerson did. If your set is particularly dirty, use a little detergent with hot water and ensure they dry off before you start your paint job.

Selecting the right tools

As Nickerson says, using spray paint will make this so simple and the colors and finishes available now will help you create a patio set sure to compete with even the best metal garden furniture picks out there... Nickerson used Fusion all in one paint in gray, but there are alternatives also to suit your preference.

'I bought four cans of paint' says Nickerson. 'A good estimate is to buy one can per chair. You can always return the extra.'

Spray painting technique

Nickerson adds 'This is a great kind of spray paint project for beginners. With exception to the frames, there aren’t any solid surfaces so you don’t have to worry as much about an uneven finish. Just make sure you spray the lattice mesh parts from all sides and the bottom. This way bits of the old color don't peek through from certain angles.'

Nickerson went for a warm gray color. 'I wanted them to be neutral next to our light colored house and green shutters.' She adds.

The results: 

'As soon as they were dry I hauled them around front and enjoyed the cottagey charm they add to the yard. I'll list the chairs that were previously there on Facebook Marketplace, so the whole project will have cost about $125 including the spray paint.' Says Nickerson.

If you’re a backyard enthusiast, ready to soak up some rays (but not too many) it’s time to get yourself a trusty patio umbrella.
