But if you hardly want to step foot in there because it feels so cramped and uninviting, we have a problem. A small entryway is easily dealt with, but there is something a little more challenging with a space that is particularly narrow.

Thankfully, this isn't the first time I've scoured the design world for looks to love and that will actually make a difference. So how do you decorate a small entryway so that it looks less narrow?

How to make a narrow entryway look wider

As with lots of small space decorating ideas, making an entryway appear wider is all about tricking the eye (in a nice way). You want to add visual depth in the right places to bring balance and make it more of a pleasure to be in.

1. Keep it styled but understated

Jess of @sundayharris shows us how a pared-back aesthetic can do great things for a narrow entryway. Running the same texture throughout, natural rattan and jute, along with a warm, neutral color scheme makes the space feel open without looking empty and uninviting. 

"For smaller entryways, I like to keep the pattern to a minimum as a busy entryway makes it look even smaller," says designer Amy Youngblood. This doesn't mean that more 'statement' pieces are not allowed in a minimalist entryway, it's all about keeping it subtle with decor and even entryway lighting. 

"However, one trick to enlarge your space is large simple artwork on one of the walls which will give the illusion of greater size," continues Amy. "You can also add an elongated simple overhead fixture that fits the space and adds interest." 2. Include colorful detail

"Also, don’t forget about an appropriate runner that fits well and elongates the space."

Mirrors and small spaces go together like rosé on a Friday. Choose one with an interesting frame for intrigue. "Adding a mirror to a small entryway allows for the practicality of checking yourself before you head out, but it also helps to open up the space visually," says Victoria Holly, principal and founder of LA-based Victoria Holly Interiors. 

"An entryway is a perfect opportunity to include a unique statement mirror that you might not use in a more practical place such as a bathroom. Choosing an asymmetrical mirror or bold material or color is the perfect pop for an entrance without cramming the space." For more impact, you could even consider a full-length mirror.

"Whether it is a small ottoman to add print and texture or a vintage console for history and charm, a gentle suggestion would be positioning your items to one side of the entryway. A mirror is also essential to adding the illusion of a wider space. These minor adjustments can make the change from cramped to cozy."

5. Keep wall colors earthy and refreshing

If you have the opportunity, using the best paint colors for small entryways is a surefire way to change the vibe of the space, making it feel far more open and appealing. Paint can be transformative in a narrow entryway with designers recommending muted tones a lot of the time. "The best type of colors are lighter shades of neutrals or more muted colors," says Amy Youngblood. 

Wallpaper, however, can add a ton of detail, and if you rent, a peel-and-stick option could give a stunning finish, ideal for those with slightly more eclectic taste.
"In compact spaces, you have the opportunity to embrace a more adventurous design, setting a playful tone that resonates throughout your home," continues Maggie from House of Hackney.

Standard storage will not always cut it when you have a lot of shoes and a narrow or awkwardly shaped entryway. Plus, there are lots of small entryway storage mistakes that are ready to trip us up. 

Victoria Holly tells us this is where a lot of her clients stumble first off: "I see a lot of entryway mistakes when it comes to shoe storage," says Victoria. "Many people seek out a storage bench, believing it to be the ultimate solution. However, a more flexible and space-saving practical alternative is a loose basket." We do have a few favorite benches that made the cut into our shoe storage suggestions for smaller entryways.

A narrow entryway doesn't have to feel claustrophobic. With a few simple design trips, you can easily make this space look and feel wider. We'd recommend keeping excess items like shoes, jackets, and umbrellas to a minimum to pull off a minimalist small entryway look. According to professional organizer and home stager Amanda Wiss, founder of Urban Clarity, all it takes is a bit of savvy storage and a sensible organization system and the sky’s the limit — quite literally in this case. 

“Depending on the height of your closet, you can feasibly create an extra three to four feet of usable storage space above your hanging rods by installing metro shelving, or another configurable shelving design. Line it with lidded bins (to prevent dust) and use them to store items you don’t need ready access to,” she says. 

3. Bespoke storage

They tend to be on the pricier side, but custom-made inserts are arguably the best way to make the most of tricker closet spaces. If you're working with a particularly awkward space, like a closet underneath the stairs, some DIY small entryway projects are a great way to tackle it.

As well as maximizing every inch of space, you have the benefit of designing them to suit your particular organizational needs — built-in cubbies to store handbags and shoes, for example. Or perhaps a pull-out rail to make rifling through coats easier.

“This might seem like a small mistake, but the undertones in a color are what give it warmth or coolness,” says Seymen Usta, interior design specialist and founder of Seus Lighting.

He continues, “For instance, a blue with purple undertones will look different than a blue with green undertones.”

She encourages us to think about how hotels make guests feel welcomed and at home with luxurious little touches that make all the difference. “For that hotel feel you need to go the extra mile and bring greenery into the space with a large plant or dried stems in a vase on your console, like this chic Threshold console table from Target. Dried stems are perfect because they rarely need changing so they’re low-effort, too.”

"It makes such an impact that anyone coming over to your place will be instantly wowed, but the mass of color also plays a trick on the eyes. Without seeing certain corners and exactly where parts of the spaces end and begin, the whole area looks much bigger.”

It feels like everyone is installing their own wall paneling right now. A style that used to be reserved only for heritage buildings, we’re now seeing pop up in apartments no matter the period they’re built.

2. Mix and match patterns

If bright and bold colors aren’t your thing but you still want to accomplish a bold design, opt for playing with new sizes and patterns. Principal interior designer Josephina Serra recommends going with a bold, maximalist style. In describing one of their townhouse projects, Serra says “We took a large format tile and had it cut to smaller pieces to make a playful statement”. 

For blogger Femia, it’s all about thinking outside the box. “Mix and match!” he says. “Experiment with a combination of small and large tiles to create a visually engaging mosaic-like design. You can play with different shapes and colors for a unique aesthetic.”

Herringbone, which is a great way to layer tile in a unique yet classic design, is a great way to create a timeless appeal to your entryway. You can even use subway tiles to make the look.

“For a classic and visually appealing look, consider laying the tiles in a herringbone pattern,” Femia advises. “This adds a touch of elegance and can make a small entryway appear more spacious.”

Wading through all the tile options can be a difficult design process which is why Benham recommends going with a timeless option that will last for years to come.

“I have worked in the home remodeling business my whole life, and I can tell you the best tile for entryways that stand the test of time and are durable are natural stones, or at least tile that looks like a natural stone color,” he advises. “Slate has always been a popular option.”

For Femia, natural stone tiles can also make a statement. “If you prefer a rustic or earthy vibe, natural stone tiles like slate or travertine can add a unique charm to your entryway,” he says.

While you may have your shape, color, or type of tile in mind, Benham advises looking into one last element of installing floor tile. 

”The best tip I can offer is not with the type of color of tile you use in your entryway but what you install underneath it,” he says. “An eclectic heated system is a great addition to your tiled entryway. It keeps the tile nice and warm. When you remove your shoes, your toes are treated with a warm floor instead of a cold tile.”

Now, you might not be able to fit a huge mirror in your entryway — I definitely couldn’t! Not only that, but it means you can check your outfit one last time before heading out. Genius. 

4. Add an accent chair

If you’re renting, be sure to check with your landlord before installing any of these.

You don’t necessarily need to install bulky shelves, if you just have a few jackets and items to store in your entryway. “This is a renter-friendly option, as you can use removable adhesive hooks that won't damage the walls,” explains home improvement expert Benjamin Stenson. “I've found that installing hooks or pegs on the wall makes quite a difference as it allows you to hang coats, bags, and even keys, freeing up valuable floor space.”

'Select Material: Due to the different climates of the various regions of the country, different materials fair better in certain areas than in others. There are different types of wood that are well-suited for different climates and of course, poly swings can accommodate any type of climate.'

'Purchase a Swing: with your newly determined measurements,knowledge of material choices, and design preference, select the swing that will best suit your size, type, and style needs. Make sure you include all of the other supplies you may need in your purchase.  For example, hanging chain and/or ropes, swing hanging hooks, chain connectors if needed, and any required tools you may not already have at your disposal, such as a drill and drill bits.'

King's 5-step guide to hanging a porch swing

1. Attach swing hangers to support beams: In order to know where to attach the swing hangers, measure the swing from side to side (use the distance between the hanging hardware on the swing). Mark this distance on the overhead support beam with a pen/pencil being sure to center the marks if desired, and to accommodate the needed clearance of 2 feet on either end of the swing. Drill pilot holes into the marks using a drill bit one size smaller than your hanging hardware (i.e. if your hanging hardware is 3/8” you will use a 5/16” drill bit for the pilot holes). Screw the hanging hardware into the pilot holes until they are secure.
2. Attach chain or rope to swing: If your swing came with the hanging assembly pre-attached, you can skip ahead.  Otherwise, you will need to attach the chain/rope to the swing using the instructions provided with your swing. Different swings will have different assembly instructions for this step depending upon the hardware used in both the construction of your swing, as well as the hanging assembly you chose. Attaching the chain/rope to most swings is an easy process.
3. Connect chain/rope to overhead support hangers: This step will often require multiple people in order to ensure the swing is level once in place, as well as keeping both yourself and the swing safe and sound during installation. One person will need to stand on a sturdy step ladder as the other lifts the swing up for them to attach the chain/rope to the hanger now firmly attached to the support beam. If having an extra set of hands is not an option, you can hang the swing alone; however, extra care will need to be taken.  Simply place the swing on a level surface such as a table, saw horses, five-gallon buckets, etc., then use the step ladder to attach the chain/rope to the hanger on the support beam.
4. Check your work: Once the chain/rope on either side is attached to the hanger in the support beam, check the swing to make sure it is level. If the swing is not completely level, you may need to adjust the chain/rope length on either side accordingly.  The ideal distance between the bottom of the porch swing and the ground is between 17 and 19 inches. This leg-swinging height can be lengthened or shortened based upon the swing user’s preference/height.  For instance, taller individuals may want to hang their swing a bit higher in order to give more legroom.
5. Porch swing trial: Your swing should glide smoothly back and forth when pushed gently.  If not, you may need to check your chain to make sure there are not any kinks in the chain, or the chain could be hung at either the top or bottom connection point.  If your swing glides smoothly when pushed, sit down carefully, applying a little bit of weight at a time.  Once you’re fully seated, try a few swings back and forth. You should glide smoothly to and fro; if not, check your chain/rope connection points again.

Now that (one hopes) the threat of lockdowns and stay-at-home orders are a thing of the past, guaranteeing that someone will be in when a delivery arrives at your door can be a tricky ask. Delivery services can be wildly different too, with some conscientious couriers leaving your packages in the safe hands of a good neighbor, while others 'deposit' them on your doorstep for all to see (and possibly even help themselves to).

The Yale Smart Delivery Box aims to solve all of these issues by providing homes with a dedicated safe place for couriers to leave packages so you don't need to worry about deliveries when you're out again.

Seeing as I hate being stuck indoors at the weekend and now that school and office life is the norm on weekdays, I decided to test out the Yale Smart Delivery Box to see if it made my life easier and gave my very kind neighbors a rest from accepting packages on our behalf.

When it arrived, straight away I could tell that the Yale smart delivery box meant business. It may be called a 'box' but in reality, it's more like a heavy-duty safe, with a sturdy all-weather metal construction that weighs in at almost 20kg when empty. I figure even if a thief did manage to wrench it away from its secure fixings, they wouldn't be able to travel far with this big boy in tow.

The box comes with a pack of fixing bolts to help you to secure it to either an external wall or pavement. Also included is a special key tag (or fob), a Yale key card, a decal that you place on the front of your property for delivery drivers, batteries, and full instructions.

Installation is a two-fold process. First, you need to set up the box with an access code or PIN. The box takes four AA batteries and once installed, you can change the standard master code to something you will easily remember. 

The instructions take you through every step of the way, even confirming how many beeps the box responds with, which is just as well because the whole process isn't very intuitive. Note to self - make sure to never lose the instructions.

The security code is your unique PIN and it shouldn't be shared. You can set one-off codes between four and ten digits long for delivery drivers.

Once I had set a new security code (and Yale recommends you do this before anything else for obvious reasons) It was time to tackle the second part of the installation.

As per the instructions, you'll need an 8mm masonry drill bit, a hammer drill, a torque wrench, a hammer, and a marker pen (to mark out holes when the box is in position). It feels like an awful lot of faff at the start but once it's secured in place, you need not worry about it again.

How does the Yale Smart Delivery Box work?

As previously mentioned, you can set one-off codes for delivery drivers. You can activate up to 20 codes at once (keeping one for each brand that you order from regularly) or add an extra level of security by setting codes that are only live for 24 hours.

You add instructions on how to use the box and the code to your order so when the delivery person arrives, they can follow the steps to open the box.

Once I had fitted the box securely in place right beside my front door, it was time to put it to the test. My son's birthday was coming up so I ordered a present for him online. Delivery was set for the following day - a Saturday - when I knew we'd be out.

When prompted to 'Deliver to a safe place’ on my order, I added a note to the order to say that the Yale Smart Delivery Box was where I'd like them to leave my package and I included the temporary code that I had set for the driver to access the box.

I'll be honest with you, I didn't have high hopes. However, when I returned later in the day and opened the box, my package had arrived and was safely stashed in the delivery box.

There are a number of ways you can collect your packages - the most basic way is to type in the security code you originally set. Alternatively - and arguably, more convenient - are to use the key card or fob instead. These need to be linked to the box beforehand but, when done, you need just tap either on the front of the keypad and the door will open. 

Better still, if you invest in the Yale Access Module (RRP £99.98) which is a WiFi bridge that links any Yale lock or alarm system to the Yale smartphone app - this turns your phone into a key.

Pleased with how my first experience was, I continued to test the Yale Smart Delivery Box out for several weeks. The results were mixed for a variety of reasons. 

Firstly, the size of the box. It's not huge (which is just as well, who would want an enormous locker at the front of their property?). But this can create issues with some deliveries. 

If you know that the item that you're ordering will fit in the box, that's great. But you're also at the mercy of a company's packaging. Ever order something small and it arrives in an enormous box with reams of the packaging within? Yes, that. 

This happened twice over the period I was testing the box. A small bag of dry cat food arrived in a cardboard box far too large to fit in the delivery box so was (thankfully) left with my neighbor instead. 

The other issue I found is that occasionally a delivery driver either completely ignored the delivery instructions that I had left on my order, or they just didn't want the bother of dealing with the box. 

I suspect this is because delivery boxes like this one are still quite new and they haven't come across many before. I imagine as they become more popular this will no longer be an issue but for now, it did confuse some. 

Yale Smart Delivery Box : Our verdict

There is a number of reasons why I believe that the Yale Smart delivery Box would be useful to some. If you tend to be away from home a lot during the day or if you don't know your neighbors well enough to have them accept deliveries on your behalf, then this would be a big help. 

It'd be useful as a key safe too if, for instance, you had to leave your house keys for someone to gain access to your home when you're out. I did experience some issues in that a couple of delivery drivers didn't use the box despite my leaving instructions on my order, while larger packages just won't fit in the box. 

Though I do think that these issues are simply teething problems and the more companies become accustomed to delivering packages to domestic delivery boxes like this one, I expect these issues will disappear. 

So is the Yale Smart Delivery Box worth it? It certainly made my life (and my neighbors' lives) a lot more straightforward and ensured I didn't arrive home to a rain-sodden package delivery again. I'd certainly recommend anyone invest in one if you could do with a mini concierge on your doorstep.

If you want to use the staircase you have but it’s currently covered in carpet and painted then there are several things you can do. Firstly, remove the carpet and check out the condition of the wood underneath. If there’s paint on it you can remove it, if not, and the wood’s in good condition then it might simply need a wood stain to give it a new look. You can add lights too and a new handrail.

It's certainly a bit of motivation to get into bed a couples of hours earlier, and to break away from our usual blue light-emitting tech devices.

Whether you're on a tight budget, want a weekend project or are renting but looking to upscale your decor, updating risers with stair stickers is a great option.

'Beyond simply carpeting, the easiest thing that you can do is jazz up your stairs with some paint or some wallpaper,' says Iain Aitch, contributing writer for Rated People.

'If your stairs are good enough to show off without carpeting, you can sand the wood and give them a splash of brightly-colored paint. You can afford to be bold on stairs, especially if they're not part of a room.'

'Lining the risers with wallpaper is a great way to use up all those lovely samples you have been hoarding for something and a mish-mash of different colors and designs can work really well if you work with a neutral color for the rest of the staircase.'

'The staircase layout and proportion should be designed in relation to the space you have available. The last thing you want is to walk into your front door and trip over the bottom step.' says Richard McLane, founder and design director, Bisca.
