Hold on! There may be things you can't recycle floating around in your recycling bins. Recycling housewares is a great way to help the environment, but there are a few things to know before you get started.

Certain items you have lying around at home could actually be repurposed instead of thrown in the garbage. Overall, it’s a win-win for everyone involved!

I spoke to an expert, who rounded up some home items that shouldn't be recycled and what to do with them rather than tossing them into the recycling bin.

7 things you can't recycle

While you may have all the best intentions when recycling goods around your house, there are actually some things that don't belong in there. We break down what to do with items you can't recycle, from household essentials to electronics and more.

1. Textiles

Textiles and fabric, whether clothing curtains or duvet covers, can’t be recycled in the curbside recycling system. Curbside recycling systems can only handle paper, plastic, metal, and glass materials. Because textiles are made of totally different materials like cotton, wool, and polyester, they need an entirely specialized channel to recycle. 

Few cities have textile recycling programs today, but New York City and select others are making strides to provide more access. Certain brands like Patagonia, H&M, and Uniqlo offer recycling drop-off programs in-store today and we can always donate usable textile items in the meantime.

When it comes to bedding, natural materials like linen and cotton (like these 100% cotton bedsheets from H&M) tend to be a more eco-friendly choice than synthetic materials like polyester.

2. Electronics

While our homes are chock full of electronics, from our TV remotes to kitchen appliances, they cannot be recycled in US curbside recycling systems. One reason is that they are complex mixes of materials. Electronics use different metals and plastics, as well as rare earth minerals, battery components, and LED screens. 

"Because they are constructed in such a complicated way, they require specialty drop-off programs to be recycled, which can be found at many retailers like Best Buy and Verizon," said Economy Professional and Recycling Expert Charlotte Dreizen.

3. Tanglers

“Tanglers” are really tricky contaminants for recycling facilities. They can be any long, winding product ranging from a garden hose to a computer charger to a strand of string lights to plastic bags. 

"These items wrap around the very first piece of equipment at a recycling facility whose job is to separate the paper from all other materials," explained Dreizen. "When that equipment gets all jammed up with tanglers, recycling facilities have to shut down for workers to cut them out using box cutters, which is dangerous business!"

Most tanglers have to be trashed, but many plastic bags like takeout bags can be brought to store-drop offs at grocery stores and retailers like IKEA, Target, and Walmart. Try to invest in some high-quality products, like these Room Essentials string lights from Target, that you're going to use year after year.

4. Paper towels

"Since we can recycle paper almost universally, many people think they can recycle paper towels because they’re also made from trees," said Dreizen. "But, paper towels can’t be recycled because they are so soft and flimsy that they can’t be sorted in recycling facilities."

We also need our recyclables to be clean and dry, so most paper towels that we’re using to wipe up spills or clean our kitchen counters would be contaminated with food or moisture. Instead, we can recycle paper towels in most composting programs, if you have access to one, as long as they don’t have harsh cleaners on them!

5. Propane tanks

"Now that we’re winding down the season where we’re barbecuing in the backyard, a lot of people have empty propane tanks to contend with," said Dreizen.

Luckily, most communities have opportunities to refill propane tanks at gas stations or hardware stores which help us keep reusing propane tanks for a long time. When a propane tank is ready to be discarded, it’s always best to bring it to your community’s household hazardous waste drop-off. Because they still contain small amounts of fuel, they can be dangerous fire-starters if placed into the recycling system! 

6. Furniture

"The vast majority of furniture can’t be recycled in our curbside system today, either because it’s not made of a material that the recycling system can handle or its size," expressed Dreizen. 

"Our recycling system was designed to handle bottles and jars and boxes and items that are much larger and are simply too big for recycling equipment to handle, no matter what it’s made of."

But, furniture can often be made from a mix of materials like textiles, metal or wood frames, adhesives, and foam, which render it unrecyclable in the curbside system. 

Some communities have dedicated recycling programs established for furniture, but it’s always best to repair or donate when at all possible! 

7. Batteries

Much like propane tanks, many kinds of batteries can also cause fires and explosions in the recycling system. 

Lithium batteries, as well as lithium-ion (otherwise known as rechargeable) batteries, are frequent culprits and should always be brought to dedicated battery recycling or household hazardous waste drop-offs. 

Battery recycling programs can be found at many hardware stores and by searching for your nearest location at call2recycle.org.

Honestly, I did this in the summer and waited a good three days for my duvet to properly dry off. Big mistake. I was left without any covers for a few nights (because I had an all-season option) and a limp duvet that had lost its fluff.

How to dry a comforter 

Good to know

Drying a comforter isn't a quick task you can do when you get a spare min, it will take a little time. Unlike washing your sheets, which requires a quick read of the care label and setting the washer to the correct settings, drying your duvet takes a little more human power. But you'll be pleased to know that you don't have to clean your duvet as often as you have to wash its cover. Washing and drying your duvet about once a month is recommended. 

Note: If you're wanting to dry your duvet in the dryer, make sure the drum is big enough. Comforters can be large and bulky and will need enough room to effectively spin and rinse in your machine. If your at-home machine is small, try taking it to the local laundromat. I'll also be using the terms duvet and comforter interchangeably throughout this step-by-step guide.

1. Check the type of comforter

Before you chuck your comforter into the dryer, make sure to check the type you have. The two most common types of duvets are natural (e.g. feather-filled or made of down) or synthetic, which is typically made of polyester or fiberfill. No matter which comforter you have, you can dry all material types by machine. But be sure to read the laundry symbols on the care label as temperature and spin speed will differ by material — with some high tog options being dry clean only. 

2. Put the comforter in the dryer

A simple step, yes, but there are some crucial details. When putting your comforter in the dryer, spread out the material as much as possible. As Parima Ijaz, founder of Pure Parima, states "A big concern people have when it comes to cleaning their comforter is losing its fluff and plushness — the whole reason you use a comforter in the first place!" Adding a few dryer balls or tennis balls too will balance the weight and "help to keep the fluff evenly distributed to avoid ending up with a flat comforter that no longer carries volume."

3. Select a low temperature setting

Jonathon Reckles, vice president of marketing at CD One Price Cleaners, and several other experts suggest using a "lower heat setting." Even if your dryer does have a large drum, a big comforter may get stuck. If on a higher temperature setting, the duvet could get too hot, and potentially burn. Reckles notes that using a low heat setting "may take a couple of cycles, but that's okay." You can always check the label if you're unsure as they'll usually have a recommended drying temperature. 

4. Hit pause and shake

This is where drying your comforter can get a little tedious. But trust me: follow this step especially and you'll have a duvet that's clean, dry, and cozy AF. Either set a timer on your phone or the machine itself for 20 to 30 minutes and take out your comforter to give it a physical fluff. Shaking out your comforter by hand will "ensure there's equal distribution of filling for a quick, and balanced dry," says Reckles. 

5. Continue drying on a clothes line

Don't stress if your comforter is taking more than a couple of cycles to get dry. Especially if you have a weighty feather-filled or down comforter, you can expect the drying time to take a while. Once your duvet is almost dry — too damp to put on the bed, but dry enough not to warrant another cycle — then finish the job using a clothesline or laundry drying rack.

I know I'm not the only one who HATES changing my bedding. These handy bags may come with everything you need but there are still a few considerations you'll need to make: 

• Size: It may sound silly but make sure you select the right size! In addition to buying sheets that match bed size — twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, or California king — you will need to take the depth of your mattress into consideration. If you have a different mattress size to your comforter, you'll also need to make sure you look into a bedding-in-a-bag set that you're able to mix and match. 
• Material: Most bedding-in-a-bag bundles are made of microfiber or polyester. This is because they're designed with value in mind. Other fabrics tend to be more expensive and are needed to be bought separately. If you do get a choice in bedding materials, do your research to see which is best for your tastes and needs. If you've found yourself subbing out iced lattes and light jackets for hot drinks and big coats, it's clear that winter is coming, whether you like it or not. While we can deal with umbrellas and boots, switching out summer duvets for enormous winter bed covers, with higher tog ratings, feels a bit extreme.

James Higgins, the CEO of sustainable bedding company Ethical Bedding  has taken a look at temperature stats over the past two years to reveal what he thinks is the best, exact date, to switch to your best duvet for winter this year. But is there any truth in it and what tog should you go for at this time of year? We investigate.

Why and when to change to a winter duvet?

Looking at UK weather reports by Statista, there has been a steady rise in UK average daily temperatures since the 1960s. 

Despite this, when the seasons change, there are still significant drops in temperature, and Higgins notes that the figures for 2021 show that average daily temperatures fell by 25 per cent from August (16.1 degrees Celsius) to October (12.1 degrees Celsius). Whether you sleep hot or cold, that big difference will be noticeable come bed time.

As a result, this year Higgins thinks swapping out your duvet earlier could be wise, 'We would advise that people looking to swap their duvet tog a little earlier in preparation, which would be Sunday 25th September.' 

'The 25th is the ideal date to swap your duvet tog as it's a couple of days before a predicted and historically recorded average temperature drop. As a Sunday it's also a great day to get your house into order before the week ahead and you won't be caught off guard for any large climate changes towards the end of the month.'

'The best two togs to take into the winter months are usually a 7 or a 10.5. The best tog for you entirely depends on the type of sleeper you are. If you are naturally a warm sleeper or have a smaller, cozy, room that retains heat, then a 7 is enough to take you into the colder months. If you have a larger or draughty room then a 10.5 might be the best fit. The difference between the two togs is the thickness of the filing in your duvet and sometimes the material. Polyester is a more breathable material so you may need a higher tog to get the same effect to the likes of down feather which retains heat better, and requires a less intense tog level.'

Need some recommendations?

Outside vs inside temperature

But should we be more focused on the temperature of your actual home, and bedroom more specifically? After all, with the cost of living crisis in our minds, we're all thinking twice about switching the heating on, if at all, which as a result will impact how cool our bedrooms are at night, especially if upgrading home insulation is out of the question.

According to Dormeo, one of Europe's most trusted bedding brands, 'A 13.5 tog winter duvet is perfect for the colder months, depending on how low the temperature drops in your bedroom overnight.'

Dormeo encourages you to maintain a bedroom temperature of 18–21 degrees overnight also and to increase your bedding tog to 15 when your home gets colder.

As for the date of when to do this, if you're trying to reduce energy costs, as Higgins implies, perhaps the earlier the better.

What our bedding expert says

'There is no set rule when it comes to switching your duvet for the season,' says Louise Oliphant, eCommerce writer and sleep expert at Real Homes.

'Aside from basing this on when the weather changes, I’d recommend swapping out your summer bedding for more cold weather-appropriate pieces when you find yourself becoming chillier at night.'

'Rather than reaching for your itchy blankets at the back of the cupboard or putting on an extra pair of socks to sleep in, having in a winter duvet should be first on your to-do list.'

Tog talk

Oliphant explains: 'It’s true, thicker duvets of higher tog ratings can make all the difference to keeping you toasty at night. Tog refers to how effectively a duvet can retain heat, so opting for a duvet of around 10.5 tog in the coldest of months will provide the extra insulation you need. So don’t wait until Christmas comes, as soon as you’re not getting your best sleep, invest in one of the best duvets for winter.' 

There are other factors to consider also, such as the size of your room and ventilation. So if you have a small bedroom design, and prefer a warmer room, the snug dimensions could be favorable.

'If you have quite a small room or a room with only one window, it is easier for heat to become trapped overnight meaning you may not need as thick a duvet tog as those with larger, more draughty rooms. In this case, I’d advise sleeping with a tog of 7 instead of 10.5 as it will better help your body control temperatures in a smaller space.' Adds Higgins.

If you're strapped for cash, layering soft throws can be a good stopgap. While, if your budget permits, consider investing in a complete fall bedding set to cozy up your space furthermore. 

Of course, if you're particularly chilly an electric blanket could be a great choice. And keep an eye on the weather and temperature either via an app on your smartphone – or get Alexa (or another smart speaker), to do the work for you!

How to shop for the right tog

When shopping duvets, it can be helpful to know what the different tog ratings mean. The scale ranges from 1 to 15, with 1 being very cool and 15 being the warmest – most duvets start at 4.5 FYI.

Here, Higgins outlines the five most popular tog ratings so you can see which one suits your sleep style.

• 4.5 tog – a 4.5 tog rating is designed to keep you cool at night, and is ideal for anyone who suffers from night sweats.
• 7 tog – a 7.0 tog rating is still on the cooler end, but offers a little more warmth if your room is air-conditioned or you keep a fan on at night. It’s also ideal for when the temperature begins to start fluctuating between seasons and is often chosen for year-round bedding.
• 10.5 tog – slightly warmer, a 10.5 tog rating continues to offer enough insulation to keep you toasty when it’s cold without becoming unbearable in the heat.
• 13.5 tog – 13.5 tog rated duvet is ideal for cold-weather bedding, but might become a little too much when the temperature starts to crank up. Consider buying a cooler quilt that you can swap over for summer.
• 15 tog – 15 is the highest tog duvet rating, and, again, might feel a bit too much in the heat. You should almost definitely consider buying a thinner duvet, so you have a cooler option.

And while cost is the overarching factor when it comes to buying basic essentials, we've considered style and practicality too – basic doesn't have to mean boring. 

The clocks have sprung forward and the sun is out, so it might be a good time to think about switching your best duvet to something a little more spring-appropriate. A bedding expert has revealed the exact date to swap your duvet tog so you can enjoy the best sleep possible.

James Higgins, CEO of sustainable bedding company Ethical Bedding says April 2nd is the ideal time to pack away your winter duvet.

The exact date to change your duvet tog

'Waiting to change your duvet until there’s a heatwave is going to leave you stressed out and probably already a few days short on sleep,' warns James. He says April 2nd is the perfect time to make the switch from a winter thickness of 10.5-15 togs, to a summer one (4.5-7 togs).

Firstly, every year, things hot up significantly as we enter April. James notes that the week moving from March to April shows around a 28% increase in average daily temperatures. 

The 28% increase is based on data on the average daily temperatures from March to April over the last seven years in the UK. So if all of a sudden, the temperature is almost a third higher, it can make a huge difference to the heat retention in your bedroom, particularly in smaller boudoirs. 

Not only are we reaching a much warmer season, but a heatwave is also predicted in the UK, which could last from the 1st until the 15th of April. 'We would advise that people take to swap their bedding on the first weekend of the month, which will be Saturday 2nd April,' says James. 

When it comes to finding ways to sleep better, your mattress, pillows, and duvet are your first port of call. Duvet tog ratings can be a little confusing, but the scale ranges from 1 to 15, with 1 being very cool and 15 being the warmest. Most duvets start at 4.5.

Jo James, Founder & Creative Director of Bedfolk says a common misconception is that tog refers to the thickness of a duvet. 'The tog is actually a scale used to measure how good a duvet is at retaining heat,' Jo explains. 

The Bedfolk founder also agrees that it's a good idea to switch your duvet seasonally. Investing in the best mattress will also make a dramatic difference.

There's nothing worse than getting cozy and then realizing you need to go to the bathroom, but ignoring these physical things like needing the toilet or not being warm enough will prevent your mind from relaxing. Cue overthinking and counting down the hours until your alarm goes off.

It's tempting to layer up when it's cold, sleeping in jumpers and thick socks. But, as bedding expert Jo says, your body heat will actually warm up the duvet and help you to feel cozy.

How to make a bed step by step

Making your bed goes further than just throwing the duvet over the entire thing and putting in that little extra effort really pays off. It doesn't take long to layer your bed properly and a bed well made will set off your bedroom decor instantly also. 

1. Start with a good foundation

A cozy bed starts with a quality foundation so it is very much worth investing in the best mattress you can afford. On average, mattresses last anywhere from seven to ten years so if yours is older than that, you may want to consider looking into a new one. We spend a third of our lives sleeping so making sure you have a mattress that meets your needs should be a priority! 

2. Mattress pads are a must

Mattress pads are a must as they perform double duties, they help protect your mattress from stains and they also add extra cushion to your mattress. Look for a high-quality mattress pad at places like Downlite Bedding. It’s like sleeping on a cloud and you’ll be so glad you made the investment!

3. Cover those box springs

If you have a platform bed, you don’t have to worry about a bed skirt. But if you have a box spring, hiding it is a must when going for visual appeal. 5. Down comforter or quilt

I suggest going neutral on the comforter or quilt and adding color with some fun throw pillows and blankets. When I was searching for new bedding, I decided to go with a gray duvet with matching pillow cases from Amazon. It was beautiful, affordable, and neutral so I can mix and match other colors whenever I want a new look!

6. All the pillows

Pillows are the icing on the cake of a beautiful bed. I like to start by stacking euro pillows in the back against the headboard. It helps create height and establishes a focal point. I suggest purchasing euro pillow inserts and covers, that way if you want a different look, you just have to purchase new covers which saves money! I found my navy blue euro covers and inserts on Amazon. 

Next, layer pillows with the cases from your sheets and matching quilt or comforter set. If you’re in need of new sleeping pillows, Downlite Bedding is a great place to look for those, too! If your sheet pillow cases aren’t decorative you may opt to store them in a basket by your bed for easy access when you need them later. 

Now you’re ready for some pretty throw pillows! Sometimes matching throw pillows come with your bedding set, but mine didn’t so I found some nice blue pillows at Target to match my euro pillows. I chose blue to go with my neutral gray comforter for a pop of color and also because blue is a soothing and relaxing color. Choose colors that make you look forward to being in your room, colors that feel inviting to you. I recommend choosing assorted sizes to add interest!

7. Don't forget the throw blankets

The finishing touch to layering a beautiful and cozy bed is adding a blanket or two. In the winter I like to place a large blanket at the end of the bed in case we get cold during the night. In the summer months, a light throw blanket is perfect to have on hand just in case. Not only are they practical but it’s another chance for you to add some color and coziness to your bedding!

In terms of testing that is the case, all I can say is I've not woken with an unpleasant sweaty hairline after a hot night's sleep - so it must be working?!

What is it like to sleep on? The design has a zip fastening, as opposed to an envelope folding end to ensure the pillow is perfectly fitted inside, and don't be afraid that a spacesuit-style fabric is any different to that of a regular fabric; it simply has a slightly cool feeling to the touch but you don't feel that once your pillowcase is over the top.

If you've been put off investing in a weighted blanket because of their looks, then you may be impressed by Eve's more traditional-style offering.

Like most of Eve's range, when it came to designing this bedding-of-the-moment, the brand decided to keep things simple. There is one size and weight of weighted balnket available, and instead of opting for glass beads and quilted polyester, it went for a cream ribbed-cotton number that I for one am very happy to have on my bed.  

However, what you gain in good looks you do sacrifice slightly in terms of performance. The thick ribbed-knit looks great, but it does mean this blanket doesn't drape as well as many of its quilted glass-bead counterparts, which means you lose out on some of that all-over hugging sensation. 

You still get a decent 7kg of weight with this blanket, which I definitely felt helped me sleep more soundly, but it wasn't quite as satisfying to drape around your shoulders as some of the very best weighted blankets we've tested, and when it wrinkles the thick fabric means areas of weight are removed from your body completely, so it didn't offer the all-over swaddling sensation that is a large part of a weighted blanket's appeal. 

Is this blanket still worth it because it looks good and offers a good amount of sensory pressure to help you sleep more soundly? Depending on how you balance the scales of aesthetics and performance - and how large your budget is, because this option certainly isn't cheap - then, in our opinion it could well be.

Eve mattresses

It's not every day we say that a mattress suits every kind of sleeper, but the Emma Original Hybrid mattress lives up to this bold claim. You'll especially love it if you're a side sleeper – though it's also extremely comfortable for front and back sleepers, too.

As a hybrid, the Original Hybrid has a combination of memory foam and springs, but the former isn't overwhelming: in fact, it has the pleasant feel of a traditional pocket-sprung mattress, perfect for anyone who's undecided on a foam mattress. It's pretty firm, which we found helped with aches and pains and supported key pressure points. A premium mattress, the eve Premium Hybrid mattress is one to consider if you're looking for next generation, firm pressure relief. It's perfect for those who like/need firm support – great if you have a bad back or achy hips.

A cut above your regular blow-up mattress, the Sleep Away mattress offers guests an 8cm layer of substantial foam to bed down on and transforms into a compact roll when not in use with a handy zipper that ensures it doesn't come unrolled, plus a carry handle if you want to take it out on location. Glamping anyone?

Once unfurled Eve says you should give it 30 minutes to plump up to full volume - far better than half an hour spent inflating a blow-up mattress with a foot pump - although when we tried it we found it was ready to use pretty much instantly.

Inside the sleeping surface is just a simple block of foam (we were kind of expecting some hidden springs) but we tested it overnight and found it was perfectly comfortable for a few nights' sleep, although it is worth noting that without any spring support heavier sleepers will compress the foam more, so may end up sleeping closer to the ground.

The removable grey cover with Eve's distinctive yellow highlights has a nice textural feel and makes things look and feel a lot less basic, plus it can be removed and washed at up at 40 degrees. It was also simple to roll the bedding up, and zip up the fastener so it stays rolled - although potentially you might save more space by keeping it flat and sliding it under a bed when not in use.

Overall it's a useful option to have to hand for sleepovers and impromptu overnight stays.

About my sleep

To relate to my review it's important to know a little about me and my sleep patterns to work out how my experience might compare to your own. For starters, I am a late 30-something female (not willing to admit I'm nearly 40) of average weight and height. Why is this important to know? Size has an impact on how a mattress might feel to each individual – determining the levels of firmness and support needed by different body types.
I've always had the ability to sleep soundly for a solid 8 hours, without anything disturbing me – until this last year when I've found overheating at night frequently waking me, but only to levels of stick-your-leg-out-the-bed-hot. Hence why I've been keen to try the latest tech to maintain a stable body temperature while asleep to prevent this becoming more of a problem, and so far (touch wood) it's been working. 

My sleep stats:

• Sleep position: I'm a Flexi-sleeper (made up that phrase) I sometimes sleep on my side, other times on my back
• Insomnia: no, and if woken I can go back to sleep with ease
• Sleep problems: overheating in recent years
• Average sleep time: minimum 8 hours

One of the key questions you might be asking is what’s the difference between basic bedding and the very best? Well, without wishing to be brusque, the answer is simple: a fair few hundred quid. 

We tested Brook & Wilde’s top-end Hungarian goose-down duvet, pillow, mattress protector, and bedlinen set to see what the fuss is all about. You’ll be spending in excess of £1,000 for this collection, so what exactly do you get for the money?

First, the context
For many years I've been used to the sort of bedding that I’d suspect most people buy. Our go-to bedding is duvets in the sub £100 range, usually Silentnight or similar. Duvet covers are bought for aesthetics and usually cost, again, sub £100. Mattress protectors get very little attention whatsoever and are usually bought at the cheapest price. Pillows are slightly different; I’m a head-and-neck-achey kind of sleeper so have invested various sums over the years and currently use a Simba hybrid pillow.

So could I really be convinced to spend nearly 10x our usual budget on bedding? Brook + Wilde's mattresses are top performers in the Real Homes' best mattress guide, so I was interested to see if the bedding achieved the same standards. Read on to find out my verdict.

Brook + Wilde bedding: reviewed and rated

What do you want out of a duvet? Having endured a variable selection of duvets over the years - from cheap supermarket versions bought in a hurry to ones where a greater investment usually pays back - there are a few things to consider. 

Temperature control
Firstly, temperature control. That works in two ways, firstly you need a duvet that feels like it provides enough insulative performance to keep you warm on a cold winter’s night, and secondly one that’s breathable enough to feel light in summer. 

A duvet's insulative quality is measured by the tog rating, typically 13.5 for winter and a lighter sub-5 rating for summer. That means two duvets, of course. But tog ratings alone aren't the end of the story. The tog is measured on a flat surface and not in real-life scenarios, so to keep warm and snug you need to combine the tog with the ability of the duvet to wrap itself around you. That's why you never feel massively cosy in cheaper duvets which tend to be polyester-filled and suffer from bounceback. Don’t forget, too, that to maintain a pleasant body temperature (and avoid night sweats) the best duvets are moisture-wicking and breathable - which is all down to the air circulation.

Hungarian goose down
With all that in mind, Hungarian goose-down fillings are widely considered to be the best, offering significantly more air circulation than polyester and other synthetics. While people can worry about goose down being allergenic, the science says it’s actually that down tends to attract dust/house mites which in turn set you off sneezing. The way that top-end goose-down duvets deal with this is a high-quality, tightly weaved casing. 

Goose-down can also come with ethical concerns. To help you rest easier, Brook + Wilde's down and feathers are never sourced from live animals, are not associated with animals used in the foie gras industry, and are all retraceable back to the rearing area. Their products have also been awarded the Downpass Certificate which monitors that ethical standards are met.

Weight, drape and comfort
On all counts, the Brook & Wilde Marlowe Goose Down Duvet we tested hit the spot. I was particularly impressed with its feeling of weight and ability to drape while at the same time feeling comfortable and airy. It felt very smooth and silky and the 10.5 tog rating didn’t underperform despite some cold nights. Even in the early June heat, it felt comfortable and light.

The battle of the pillows has a new champion
As previously mentioned, I’m slightly obsessed by pillows, having tried every available type over the years both singularly and in combination. My current go-to choice is the Simba hybrid pillow which is currently ranked as one of the best pillows available to buy by the Real Homes team. I’ve found its flexibility (you can add or remove the memory foam cubes easily) very useful in finding a comfortable balance between firmness and receptiveness to the impact of my head crashing to the pillow after a long day.

The perfect combination
However, after a month with the firm version of the Marlowe pillow (there's also a medium-density option available), I’m hooked. It is by some distance the most comfortable pillow I’ve ever slept on. It has a perfect combination of support and cushioning - it really is the most enjoyable and relaxing pillow to crash down onto. It deflates beautifully on impact, with no bounceback but also a remarkable softness that the Simba can’t match. It’s a whole lot pricier for sure, but if you're willing to invest in a good night's sleep, it’s the answer to my personal search for the world’s best pillow.

Unpicking cotton quality
To understand the appeal of Brook & Wilde’s bedding - and to rank bedding quality in general - it’s important to understand the impact of the cotton used and how it’s measured. This is because the quality of the cotton has a direct impact on how it feels to the touch - the highest quality cotton feels so smooth it's almost silky.

The feel of the cotton bedlinen is influenced by two factors: the thread count - this means the number of threads across both width and length per square inch - and the type of cotton, which is usually based on the length of the fibre. The longer the fibre, the smoother the touch. ‘Combed’ cotton refers to the process of combing out the shorter fibres. Most standard linens use fairly short weave cotton. Egyptian cotton has an extra-long weave. So high-quality long-weave cotton, at a high thread count: that’s what you’re after.

For context, your basic-quality supermarket sets tend to have a thread count of around 180-200. That can feel a bit rough to the touch, and you'll be able to see gaps between the threads.

We tested the Sandringham bed linen set from Brook + Wilde which includes a duvet cover and two Oxford pillowcases. The set has an 800 thread count and is made from combed cotton sateen. Sateen is effectively cotton that has been soaked and sealed, giving a smoother touch than regular cotton. The result is a liquid-smooth light touch and an appearance somewhere between matte and shine. The experience is definitely luxurious and reminiscent of boutique hotel quality. 

The details
Both duvet cover and pillowcases are trimmed with an embroidered border in a choice of four colour options; navy, blush pink, silver and teal. The coordinating 800 thread count Chatwsworth fitted sheet and extra pillowcases are available to buy separately.

The duvet cover has a French tail, which is an extra flap at the foot of the cover designed to tuck under the mattress and keep the duvet in position. I could see the appeal of this but equally, I prefer to untuck and wrestle with duvets where possible and as a result, the French tail was left flapping around a bit. I’m not sure I thought it was such a big benefit.

That said, this was a duvet cover that won on two main criteria. Firstly, it felt brilliant. There’s a clear and tangible difference in experience between this bed linen and anything else I’ve ever slept in and it did recall some of the (admittedly very rare) nights in luxury hotels. Secondly, and more importantly, it felt just as good, if not better, after several washes. It’s clearly exceptionally well made, resilient and feels wonderful - it’s difficult to imagine how it could be beaten in the best bedding stakes.

Comfortable cushioning
Brook & Wilde’s Kensington mattress protector was soft to the touch thanks to its cotton percale cover and quite unlike any protector I’ve tried thanks to its hollow-fibre filling. It added real cushioning to the top of the mattress. 

Easy to fit
Another key factor for me in assessing the best mattress protectors on the market is how easy it is to fit, and on this front, the Brook +Wilde protector performed well thanks to its elasticated skirt. 

It’s hard to get too excited about mattress protectors, but it was noticeably a step up from the standard.

Three options of firmness
So, the first thing you need to know about the Brook & Wilde Elite mattress is that you can choose the firmness. This may not sound revolutionary, but in the one-size-fits-all memory foam industry, it’s as rare as hen’s teeth. In fact, we can’t think of another company in this sector that allows for the reality that everybody is different.

Eight layers of hybrid technology
Now to the detail. This is a hybrid mattress, which means that it combines modern memory foam with pocket spring technology. Memory foam shapes the mattress to your body position for a mix of comfort and support, while springs help to add bounce with extra resilience.

Modern mattress companies tend to use the number and complexity of layers as a point of competitive advantage, and the Elite from Brook + Wilde competes well on this front. The Elite has eight layers, consisting of (from the bottom):

• A non-slip base 
• Support base (for underneath the springs) 
• 1,000 large springs (for bounce) 
• 'Wave’ support form (to help with the shaping) 
• 2,500 mini springs 
• High density foam top layer 
• Mattress protector 
• Washable cover 

Most mattresses don’t offer the second layer of springs, and as a result the Elite - especially in the firm build - tends to offer a little bit more push back and bounce than other mattresses. Generally speaking, the smaller the springs higher up the mattress, the more you’ll feel support and more alignment to your body shape. Smaller springs will also more evenly distribute your weight across the mattress.

One of the Elite’s other points of difference is its use of a wave design on the memory foam layers (as opposed to a level foam) which is designed to provide extra depth in the upper areas of the mattress – meaning the upper spine and shoulders should be aligned more naturally with the rest of the body. Additionally, the open cell structure of the memory foam top layer is designed to help regulate body temperature. 

Our verdict
A mattress is one of the most important things you’ll buy for your house - and is definitely an investment piece. You’ll be hoping to get at least five years of service from it, and as a result, want to make sure it’s right. In our opinion, the slightly higher price of the Elite mattress from Brooks + Wilde is justified by its exceptional build quality and innovative features. And as someone who far prefers a firm sleeping surface, I think the ability to tweak the firmness of your mattress construction is a clever idea.

The Elite feels particularly supportive around the neck and shoulders which works well. I’d been concerned that the Elite firm might feel like sleeping on a patio, but there was sufficient support, shape and cushioning to feel encompassed and at ease.

In general, I’ve woken up having enjoyed deeper and more restful sleep as a result of this mattress – heat regulation is a strong point, and it feels like a long-lasting, luxury mattress choice. The best part of £1,000 might feel like a lot of money, but at roughly 50p per night’s sleep (for five years’ use) it’s a very sound investment.

The overall verdict: Is Brook + Wilde bedding worth the money

Depending on your bed size you're likely to be spending well in excess of £1,000 on bedding to buy the Marlowe Hungarian goose-down pillow and duvet, the Sandringham bed linen set and the Kensington mattress protector from Brook & Wilde. Not to mention the cost of the mattress itself if you opt for the Brook +Wilde Elite.

It’s not difficult to spend more on bedding - up to 3-4 times the price in fact at some very exclusive brands - but it’s a lot easier to spend a lot less. So is it worth it? 

It depends on your approach to the quality of the eight hours you get each night. 

Simply put, I have never experienced comfort in bed as experienced with this range. A good quality sleep and a relaxing sleep experience is increasingly important to me, and, for this reviewer, being well-rested is linked to being more effective at work and an overall better quality of life. 

The feeling of top-end luxury bedding is worth the investment, and in my opinion - as long as you're not looking for a vegan option - this Brook & Wilde range is as good as it gets.

About my sleep

In order to understand how my review relates to you, you need to know a bit about me - it affects the experience of the mattress. I'm in my mid-40s, 6ft, and 11 and a half stone - depending on the balance of the number of fish and chip meals I've eaten vs how many times I run each week. I have to sleep with a mattress over my ears for some weird reason and sleep on my side or stomach.

My sleep stats:

• Sleep position: stomach/side
• Insomnia: nope
• Sleep problems: occasionally get too hot, very sensitive to noise and light
• Average sleep time: 7 hours

Partially exacerbated by working from home in a variety of positions, I endure occasional shoulder, neck and lower back pain and as a result need extra firmness in a mattress. My partner suffers with lower back pain thanks to a childhood skiing accident - handy, really, because it means we’re both equally attuned to the benefits of a firm mattress.

Putting the sheet, duvet cover and pillowcases in the washing machine is the easy part of getting bed linens clean. But there’s the duvet inside the cover to think about as well, and you might be wondering just how to wash a duvet. After all, this element of your bedding is bulky and comes with a variety of fillings that seem challenging to clean.

Getting to grips with the job is a must, though. When we sleep we lose half a pint of fluid each night and, in the course of a year, we shed a pound of dead skin cells, according to the Sleep Charity – and there’s only the cover to protect the duvet beneath from this onslaught.

That‘s not all, of course. There’s plenty more on the list of things that mean you definitely will want to clean a duvet in addition to its cover. Think tea or coffee spills, bodily fluids, and the fact that many of us let pets on to the bed, adding their own contribution to the (unhygienic) party. How to wash a duvet or down comforter in a washing machine

Your first instinct when thinking about how to wash a duvet is to pop it in the washing machine. It’s a good one, too, but there are a few things to bear in mind before you stuff the duvet into the drum and push the button.

First of all, check the duvet’s care label. Does it say it can be washed? If not, you’ll need to follow the instructions – likely to recommend taking it to a professional dry cleaner – to avoid unfortunate results. Duvets with synthetic fillings are often washable in a home washing machine, while those containing feather or down more frequently require dry cleaning. 

Is it possible to wash your down comforter in the washer? Well, you absolutely can but we recommend using a front loading washing machine, like the ones you'd find at a laundromat.

If the label does say that your duvet is machine washable, the next question is whether the washing machine’s drum is large enough to fit it. It’s important that the duvet can move around freely during the washing cycle. A washing machine with a 7kg drum capacity should be able to accommodate a double duvet but be aware that the tog rating also counts. If yours is a warm, high tog duvet, it may not be able to go into your home machine. The best course of action? Check your washing machine’s instructions.

• Follow the instructions on the care label including when it comes to the temperature of the washing cycle.
• Use as high a temperature as the label recommends: at 60ºC dust mites are killed and this is particularly crucial for asthma and allergy sufferers.
• For a synthetic filling, use your usual detergent or as stipulated by the care label. Got a feather or down duvet/comforter? Go for a non-bio detergent.
• When the washing cycle has finished, make sure you shake the duvet out so the filling is distributed evenly.
• After that you’ll need to leave the duvet to dry thoroughly and completely before you put it back into a cover and on to the bed.
• You might be able to put it into the tumble dryer as an alternative, but always follow the instructions on the care label.

How to wash a duvet or down comforter without a washing machine

If your duvet is too large for your home washing machine but is machine-washable, you can take it to a laundromat with larger capacity machines. Some dry cleaners also offer a duvet-washing service along with dry cleaning for those duvets that can’t go into the machine.

What about other alternatives? Wondering how to wash a duvet in the bath? It’s not our recommended method, but it is possible. There’s a big BUT here, though. If your duvet’s care label says dry clean only, don’t try this method. 

Without further ado, here's how to wash your duvet or down comforter without using a washer.

• You’ll need to fill the tub to around half way with warm water, then add detergent and agitate the water to mix it in.
• Remember to check the care label for the type of detergent that’s recommended for your duvet.
• Put the duvet into the water, then work the soapy water into it, making sure you’ve tackled every area.
• Some people recommend using (clean) feet to do this to avoid awkward bending over the bath. 
• When you’re done, release the soapy water from the bath, and then rinse the duvet in clean water. 
• You’ll need to repeat this until there’s no detergent remaining. 
• After that, gently squeeze the water out, shake to distribute the filling evenly, and hang the duvet until it’s completely dry.

How often should you wash a duvet or down comforter?

Your duvet doesn’t need washing as regularly as your bed linen because it is protected by the cover. However, you should do it at least on an annual basis, and every six months is probably better especially for a duvet owner who has asthma or allergies.

Martha Stewart suggests, 'Besides a cover, a duvet comes with the all-important insert, which can be filled with feathers, wool, fibers that are sustainably grown, or synthetic fibers. Though some inserts can be machine-washed, it'll last longer if you get it professionally laundered once or twice a year.'

How to wash a duvet naturally

We’d always recommend using a laundry detergent for cleaning your duvet and not creating your own recipe at home. But you can definitely use a natural detergent to get your bedding hygienic. 

Natural laundry detergents include plant-based ingredients, but the best still deliver the cleaning results you expect. As well as being eco-friendly, you could find they avoid the skin irritation other products may cause.  

Getting enough sleep, and getting enough quality sleep, is mighty important for our health and well being. It’s one of the most essential things we crave day-to-day and having a good sleep space to drift away on can make or break the cycle.

According to the Sleep Council, 40 percent of the UK population suffer with sleep issues which could be down to a multitude of reasons. For example, your lifestyle may be keeping you awake at night, your duvet is making you hot or your bed isn’t quite up to scratch so it doesn’t give your body the support it needs. And, with the warmer weather now upon us, you may have noticed these issues have become more prevalent than ever.

To help address these concerns, we’ve teamed up with U2 Sleep who have spent the past three years developing their own bedding innovations to ensure we get an undisturbed night’s rest. We get the lowdown on how to improve the quality of sleep and how to sleep more comfortably.

1. Make sure your head is correctly supported 

Sleeping on a pillow which is too flat, too tall, too soft or too hard is pretty common amongst households, and is something which certainly isn’t a one-size-fits-all. On average, we keep using our pillows for a little over three years, which is a long time if it’s not quite right for you. Imagine how much stress and discomfort that puts your neck under, too, not to mention the increased likelihood of mites and other gremlins living in there.

For a summer duvet, you’ll need an option between 1–4 tog; for a winter duvet, you’ll want to look out for 10.5–15 tog. Or, you can opt for an all-seasons duvet, to keep it nice and simple. 

5. Sleep comfortably when you're on the move

If you find yourself falling asleep on long distance journeys in the car, on the train or on a plane then your body will thank you for the gift of a cradling pillow which supports your heavy head. Travelling can put a tremendous amount of strain on the body because not only is there a lot of take in in quick succession, but you could also be sat down hunched up for long spells.

Your home is likely to be full of germs after the summer, and they're all waiting for your immune system to weaken in winter – so, prepping your home for winter now should avoid infections later in the year. 

These tricks should your house clean and you free of illness.

Giving your house a deep clean can kill fleas

It may be tedious and time-consuming, but a deep clean really pays off come winter. This especially applies to homes with carpets, notorious breeding grounds for bacteria and parasites. Got pets? Still more reason to get that carpet deep cleaned, for their sake as well as yours, since any fleas that may lie dormant in your carpet will awaken come central heating season. If you really don't want to do it yourself, book a professional carpet cleaner.  

The fridge also needs your attention – throw away all out-of-date food (that jar of mayo that's nine months old, anyone?), clean and disinfect all shelves and drawers.

Cleaning the radiators should improve your allergies

Central heating can make you ill, and that's a fact. The dry air itself is not  great for our respiratory systems and complexions, but the accumulation of of dust in your radiators can aggravate asthma and allergies. So wipe them thoroughly with a damp cloth before turning on. 

Cleaning all bedding will kill dust mites

The 'all' is key here; it's not just your sheets that need regular cleaning – all bedding, including pillows, duvet, and mattress topper, need a regular clean, especially if you prefer natural materials such as feather and down. If you need convincing, wash just one of your pillows first, then compare it with the one you haven't washed. Feel the difference in weight? That's the dust mites and dead skin cells.

Decluttering is good for your mental health (and charities)

Everyone instinctively knows that a serene and tidy room is better for our mental and physical health than a messy one, so go on and chuck the stuff you no longer want. Or, better still, give it to a charity.

Should you change your duvet?

If you are too hot or too cold during the night – a common complaint – your bedding could be the culprit. That down duvet may be lovely and fluffy, but it could be keeping your body too hot, so opt for natural, moisture-regulating materials such as wool, or high-tech synthetics. 

Neuroscientist Dr Penny Lewis who runs the sleep lab at Manchester University advises that 'a good duvet can help us to maintain a comfortable body temperature while we sleep even if the room is a bit too warm or too cold.  If it is highly breathable, for example with natural or technically innovative synthetic fillings, it can also prevent moisture from accumulating.' The tog count, or weight, of your duvet is also important: investing in different duvets for different seasons is a worthwhile investment, particularly if you tend to overheat during the night. 

Choose the best pillows for your sleeping position

If you wake with a stiff neck or shoulders, your pillow could be the culprit. As a rule of thumb, if you are a back or stomach sleeper, go for a softer pillow; if you tend to sleep on your side, you're likely to need a bit more support. The material of your pillow may be less important than the quality of its construction, so it's not all about buying the most expensive one you can afford. Always test your pillow before purchasing if possible. 

Take hygiene seriously 

Washing your bedsheets regularly may seem obvious, but how often do you wash your duvet and pillows? Bedding that isn't cleaned regularly can be responsible for allergies and can worsen conditions such as asthma and eczema. So pop your bedding in the wash every two to three months.

The Fine Bedding Company's spokesperson, Helen Johnson, concludes, 'We like to compare the importance of good quality filled beddings to the importance of good underwear. Even the most sophisticated dress won’t look great if your underwear isn’t doing its job right – and it’s the same with bedding. If the bits beneath the sheets aren’t performing then, no matter how pretty it looks, the cover or mattress won’t make a difference.'
