‘When we bought this house it was derelict, which meant we were able to tackle a whole house renovation project from scratch. The loft space had planning permission for two bedrooms, but we didn’t need them both and wanted to make the most of the sea views, so we decided to have our living room in the loft.

‘Derek did much of the work himself, including two balconies, which took three weeks to build, plus two sets of french doors and a second dormer window. I chose neutral tones for the décor so that the interior didn’t fight with the views.’

Cost: £24,000-28,000

(Before) The loft space was an empty shell, so it was perfect for converting into a living room; (After) A light solid oak floor from UK Flooring Direct complements the sloped walls which are mainly painted in cream to ensure the space feels light and bright. The storage cupboards under the eaves were built from Magnet kitchen door panels.
