Sally Chamley

‘Gold is replacing silver in the accessories market,’ says Sally Chamley (right), Black Orchid London’ founder. ‘It won’t be long before muted or burnt gold is a trend in furniture.’

Why it works

Using black with mirrored surfaces and metallics creates a glamorous Art Deco style – an on-trend look inspired by the film The Great Gatsby.

Make it work in your home

The key to a successful gold and black scheme, according to Sally, is to keep the gold to a minimum, using it on one accent wall and on fabrics and soft furnishings. ‘Imitation gold leaf applied to wallpaper looks rich in a burnt gold finish,’ she says. ‘Team this with black accessories and mirrored finishes. Gold leaf in a darker tone contrasts beautifully with high-gloss chocolate tones and black matt finishes.

‘Ebony Macassar is a striking choice of veneer if you like the characteristic warm-coloured stripe in this grain of ebony or dark-chocolate wood, which is finished in a high gloss. It looks beautiful against gold and works well in an Art Deco-style room.’
