Homes and lifestyle journalist Jules Barton-Breck reports back from this season’s press shows with part three of the latest homeware design collections.
Theatrical touches at Wallpaper direct
I loved the key looks introduced by Wallpaper Direct’s founder Melanie Adams for AW14: ‘Going for Gold, with advanced metallic prints for a touch of glamour; Hues of Blue, our new rich neutral collection; Jewel Tones, with more upbeat sparkle; and Winter Whites – crisp, textured whites that work all year round.’ My edit is eclectic but showcases what the company has to offer this season, from contemporary pattern in shades of blue on Painted Squares, to full-on Japanese theatrics in Tokyo and Madame Butterfly, and bold florals in Cosmo Maraschino.
Surprising drama at Laura Ashley
Renowned for its elegant classic schemes and muted colour palette, it’s great to also see directional schemes at Laura Ashley, which has introduced berry and orchid shades that add a luxe feel to its collections. Showcasing this, its recommendations include the Kingham two-seater sofa, a re-colouring of the Berkeley Scroll wallpaper and fabric, and the dramatic purple bedroom furnishings. But not everything is serious and sumptuous. The playful dog design wallpaper reflects the trend for papering the kitchen – which isn’t to everyone’s taste, I agree – but it does make waiting for the kettle to boil a bit more fun!
