The brief

To create a large kitchen, utility room and ground-floor cloakroom, plus two new bedrooms and an additional family bathroom.

Jude Tugman of Architect Your Home (architect-yourhome.com) explains how the brief was achieved:

‘The existing garage was converted into a study, and a two-storey extension was built at the rear of the property, extending over the existing single-storey garage. This created enough space upstairs for a bedroom for each of the children and a spacious family bathroom. The corner of the house was replaced with a slender steel column extension, allowing the unusually tall folding-sliding doors to open out to the garden and patio area. For additional impact, an oversized central walnut kitchen unit was included in the design to add further impact to the newly created space.’

In the gallery: A box-style rear extension, with a flush threshold leading to the garden, has created a practical family space.
