Trading Boundaries Textiles & Gifts

Trading Boundaries, situated in the heart of the Ashdown Forest in East Sussex, is celebrating its 21st year as an independent retailer of furniture, textiles, gifts and more… specialising in Indian furniture and accessories.

For owners Michael Clifford and Tracy Thomson it’s been an extraordinary journey: “We were both interested in interior design during the mid-1990s and became aware of fabulous Indian furniture arriving into the UK, but it was only available in expensive London boutiques. Michael’s mother was born in India (his grandparents were missionaries out there) and having visited as a teenager he had a real affinity to the country, so we decided he should travel back out to see if he could find these amazing products himself. A trip to India was planned in early 1996 and the rest as they say, is history…” explains Tracy.

Starting their business in a warehouse importing Indian furniture, and then moving a couple of years later to transform a derelict Georgian coaching inn into a retail emporium. “From our simple beginnings, it’s extraordinary to realise how the business has developed over the years”, adds Michael.

Known by many as ‘The Elephant Place’ due to its carved elephants on the front lawn, Trading Boundaries is one of the largest stockists of furniture in the South East.

With regular trips to India and other parts of Asia, the showrooms over two floors are full of hand-sourced items including beautiful cupboards, coffee tables, chests, cabinets, settles and chairs as well as accessories and textiles from India in addition to contemporary ranges including sofas and dining tables. You can also buy online.

Trading Boundaries has expanded over the years, so is not only an amazing shopping experience with its extensive range of Indian furniture, contemporary ranges, textiles, jewellery, homeware, gifts and accessories, but also has a café with a lovely outside area, gallery and independent courtyard boutiques... and as the sun goes down the café transforms into a stunning, magical live music venue hosting acts such as The Brand New Heavies, Greg Lake, Carl Palmer, Steve Hackett from Genesis and many more…

The team is always on hand to welcome you to this unique haven in the countryside or shop online at www.tradingboundaries.com.
