You may be stuck at home and wondering if you can actually pop your dry clean only clothes in your washing machine. You may love your fave blazers and dresses but you won't love them if they come out damaged in the wash. 

Your fancy outfits may have special cleaning requirements but some dry cleaning businesses are so busy that you may not get our garments back till a week later. Not ideal for that last-minute Bumble date or weekend brunch. 

I took the time to speak with Rick Rome, CEO and founder of WashClub, who provided us with an explanation about whether or not to wash dry clean only items along with pointers on how to do so, if you decide to wash these garments in the washing machine. Before you get started, you may need to stock up on some laundry room essentials to make the job easier.

Should you wash at home?

Rome explained that dry clean-only clothing often contains delicate fabrics, intricate designs, or materials that are not water-resistant, so he would not recommend attempting to wash dry clean-only clothing in the washing machine.

If you're concerned about the cost of dry cleaning, Rome suggests inquiring about spot-cleaning or less expensive alternatives at your local cleaner. Some garments may also benefit from airing out or using fabric-specific spot cleaners, like this highly-rated Resolve fabric cleaner available on Amazon, for minor stains, but it's crucial to exercise caution and always test on a small, inconspicuous area first.

However, if you’re in a pinch and determined to try it, Rome recommends checking a few things first.

How to wash dry clean only clothes

1. Read the care label

Always start with reading the care instructions because some dry-clean-only items may have specific instructions for handwashing or gentle cleaning. Look for a label usually located inside the neckline or on the inner side seam. They often include symbols and written instructions. 

2. Test a small area

Before attempting to wash the entire garment, test a small, hidden area for colorfastness and fabric reaction to water and detergent. This can help you avoid damaging the whole garment if problems do arise. This is especially helpful for items with mixed fabrics.

3. Use cold water

Using cold water will help minimize the risk of color bleeding and fabric shrinkage. When using a washing machine, turn the item inside out and place it into a mesh bag designed to hold delicates, like these Muchfun mesh laundry bags available on Amazon. To hand wash, just gently agitate the garment in the soapy water, avoiding any rough scrubbing or twisting. For both methods use a mild detergent designed for delicate fabrics or wool. Avoid using regular laundry detergents, which can often be too harsh.

4. Rinse thoroughly

Rinse the garment thoroughly with cold water until all detergent is removed. "Never wring or twist the garment to remove excess water, as this can damage delicate fibers," says Rome. 

Instead, gently press the water out by pressing the garment between clean towels. Excess detergent left in clothing fibers can not only lead to odor and skin sensitivity but also weaken fabrics over time, leading to early wear and tear. Rinsing clothes thoroughly helps maintain their structural integrity and prolongs their lifespan.

5. Lay flat to dry

Never use the dryer with these items as it will likely cause them to shrink and become deformed. 

"You also want to avoid hanging the garment, as this can stretch the fabric or cause it to lose its shape," explains Rome. 

Instead, lay it flat and place it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. You can also speed up the drying process by placing the item in front of a fan.

Can you wash wool in the washing machine?

Yes, you can wash wool in the washing machine, but proceed with caution. According to Cyndi Prince, founder and CEO of LooHoo, which is a brand of wool dryer balls, before washing anything, it’s crucial to read the label. “Wool can be a bit of a mystery and not all types of wool are friends with the washing machine," says Prince. 

"The care instructions are really important, so grab your magnifying glass, find the care tag, and see if it’s a washing machine-friendly wool. Wool can be very sensitive and caring for it will vary depending on the type of wool and whether the fabric is blended with other materials.” 

How to machine wash wool

Whether you’re washing your wool sweaters, blankets, or even socks, do not just put them in with the rest of your clothing, especially towels and bedding. It’s best to wash wool on its own and use the delicate cycle. “Laundry cycles are the heroes of our daily routines. When it’s wool’s turn, treat it like it’s really fragile — with extreme gentleness. Go for the most delicate cycle your washing machine offers, and make it a spa day for your wools,” says Prince.

Alternatively, Poplin laundry pro Laurie Fulford (Poplin is the world’s largest on-demand laundry service), tells me that some newer washing machines have a wool setting. “If your washing machine does not have the setting available, you can choose the delicate cycle and wash in cold water. “

Fulford also recommends turning any wool clothing inside out before you load your washer and setting your washing machine for an extra rinse cycle. 

Best detergent to use

While you might be tempted to use whatever detergent you have on hand, it may not be the best choice for cleaning wool. “Wool wants to be treated royally so regular detergents can be too harsh for your wool garments. Using a very mild detergent is best and we are currently loving Soak laundry soap. It’s like a gentle bubble bath for your woolens,” says Prince. You can stock up on a six-pack laundry detergent set from Soak for $96.

Another really good option is the High-Performance Laundry Detergent from L'Avant Collection because it can be used for both delicates as well as all of your regular laundry. The fresh linen scent also makes your clothing smell good without being overly perfumed. 

Dry cleaning wool

To make things easier, dry cleaning may be the solution for you. “If you’re unable to clean your wool garment using the above methods, then finding an eco-friendly dry cleaner would be a good option. Clothes marked on the care tag as dry clean only or items like suits or formal wear are like VIPs at a fancy gala — best cleaned by the pros to keep them looking sharp and sophisticated,” says Prince.

How to clean a washing machine with vinegar

Step 1: Clean the drum, rubber, and detergent dispenser 

Start by pouring some vinegar into your spray bottle (we're big fans of Heinz's large bottle). Then spray and scrub down every part of your washing machine's interior with your cloth and brush. Pay extra attention to the drum, the rubber seal around the door, and the detergent dispenser, as these are the main spots where you'll find a buildup of hair, dirt, trapped water, and old laundry detergent. If your dispenser can be removed, it's ideal to soak this in some warm water mixed with vinegar before cleaning it.

Tip: No spray bottle? You can also soak your cleaning cloth and dip your brush in vinegar and wipe the surfaces down that way instead.

Step 2: Add vinegar and run a warm cycle

Next, set your washing machine to its heaviest setting and highest water temperature. Start the cycle, and measure out and add a quart (4 cups) of vinegar to your machine.

For top-loading washing machines, you'll want to start the cycle first and add the vinegar while the water is filling up, and for front-loading models, pour the vinegar into the detergent dispenser to incorporate it into the warm water.

Step 3: Clean the exterior

If you're feeling extra motivated by your cleaning playlist while you're waiting for the washing machine's vinegar cycle to finish running, you can work on getting the outside of your machine sparkling. This can be done with the vinegar and spray bottle as well, but you can also use a nicer-smelling bathroom spray or cleaning wipes (which I personally do with the bathroom spray from Method and classic Clorox cleaning wipes from Walmart).

Step 4: Run a second cycle with baking soda

TBH, vinegar is an amazing natural cleaning solution to use all over your home, but the smell? Not a vibe. Neutralize any leftover vinegar scent by running a second washing machine cycle with the exact same settings as the first, but with one cup of baking soda this time. 

Step 5: Final wipe and leave the door open to air dry

Now that your washing machine is super clean and free of odors, you can give the door a final wipe-down with your cleaning cloth. To finish, you'll want to leave the door open to let any water left evaporate naturally. One of the top reasons a washing machine gets stinky is trapped water, which can be easily avoided by making sure you keep the door open after every load of laundry, too.

Okay, confession: I didn't realize how many factors go into doing laundry correctly until I moved into my first apartment, which is blessed with a built-in washer and dryer. 

For example, just like dryers, apparently washing machines have filters (???), and it's important to know how to clean a washing machine filter and do so on a regular basis to keep your laundry in its best shape.

There's so much more to washing your clothing, towels, blankets, and sheets than dumping in the detergent and hitting the start button, like clearing out your dryer lint, cleaning your washing machine, and taking steps to prevent detergent buildup and smells.

Helpful Hints: The hardest part of figuring out how to clean your washing machine filter is finding the filter itself. How to clean a washing machine filter

Step 1: Find your washing machine filter

Grab your washing machine's user manual to figure out where the filter is. Follow the instructions to remove the filter, and set aside to start the cleaning process.

Tip: If you can't find the manual or your landlord never gave it to you, Googling your washing machine's model should give you the same instructions.

Step 2: Remove the lint

Using your dry paper towel or cleaning cloth, gently remove as much lint and dirt as you can from the filter. Dampen the cleaning cloth and wipe the filter down a second time, carefully picking up any larger pieces of lint.

Step 3: Soak the filter

In your sink, mixing bowl, or bucket, make a cleaning solution using hot water and a tiny amount of dish soap (about a teaspoon is perfect). Let the solution bubble up, and soak the filter in it for about 10 minutes, allowing the hot water to start to break down any dirt and detergent buildup.

Step 4: Clean the filter housing

Cleaning your washing machine filter doesn't do much if it's just going back into a dirty space. While you have the filter soaking in your cleaning solution, dip your cleaning cloth into the same solution and wipe down the inside of the filter's housing. 

Tip: If you want to get your washing machine's filter housing super-clean, do a second pass with your favorite bathroom cleaning spray (personally, I use this eucalyptus and mint-scented one from Method, which you can grab from Target). Your washing machine is similar to the material of your shower or bathtub, so using a bathroom spray will work well.

Step 5: Scrub with a soft brush

Carefully remove the washing machine filter from your cleaning solution (don't burn your fingers!) and let it cool off if needed. Use tongs or heat-proof gloves if the water is still steaming. Grab your soft cleaning brush or toothbrush, and gently scrub the outside of the filter and its mesh to dislodge anything stuck and get every element of your filter clean.

Step 6: Replace the filter

Once it's soaked and scrubbed, you can put the filter back in its housing to get your washing machine ready for the hard work it puts in. You don't have to stress about the filter or housing being dry before you replace the filter because they're about to get wet again in the next step anyways.

Step 7: Run a quick cycle

To make sure the filter has been put back into the machine securely, you'll want to run a quick load of laundry on your machine's shortest setting. This will flush out any last bits of lint or debris in your filter and housing, and help you know if the filter is in securely for IRL laundry day.

If you're getting ready for laundry day, and open the washing machine to be hit with a reeaaaal funky smell, you should probably put your clothes back in the hamper and focus on cleaning your washing machine instead.

Between the smell and feeling like your laundry is coming out of the machine dirtier than it went in, a stinky washing machine is not an ideal situation. But WTF is causing that smell, and how do you get rid of it? 

We've broken down five of the most common causes of washing machine smell, and the quick ways to combat and prevent them from stinking up your clothes. But before you start investigating, here are the essentials you need to have on hand.

5 reasons your washing machine might smell

1. A dirty filter

Confession: I didn't even know my washing machine had a filter, let alone that it needed cleaning. I'm pretty on top of cleaning my dryer's filter and removing any lint but didn't know the washing machine had one, too.

You can tell when your filter might need cleaning or replacing when your laundry is coming out less than clean, or with streaks of detergent still on it. The main struggle in figuring out how to clean a washing machine filter is finding out where it is. Once you've done that, it's just a matter of soaking in a dish soap solution and scrubbing the filter down before popping it back into its place.

2. Old detergent buildup

I know for a fact I'm guilty of this one, and it's one of the easiest fixes ever. 

There are some amazing laundry detergent scents out there (like my favorite Method detergent from Walmart), but the funky smell coming from your machine could actually be caused by your detergent building up over time. If you're like me and you're using too much of a good thing because you're obsessed with that fresh laundry smell, it's time to take a step back. 

To prevent buildup and pleasant smells turning nasty, make sure you're using the amount of detergent directed on the bottle, and not anymore. 

3. Trapped water

Another super-common washing machine smell issue is caused by trapped water. In a small space, it's pretty much a reflex to close your machine door as soon as you're finished doing the laundry. However, this can cause water to sit and get stinky instead of evaporating, leaving your home and clothes with some not-so-fun odors.

An easy way to keep this from happening is to leave your washing machine open after use, at least until you know the inside is dry. This way, any leftover water can evaporate right away instead of sitting in a dark and humid space and getting smelly. 

4. Too much work

Let's be honest. Between sweaty gym clothes, smelly sneakers, sheets, towels, and everything else that goes into the laundry, our washing machines are by far some of the hardest-working appliances in our homes. Rather than any specific cause or mistake, it could just be that your machine has just been accumulating the typical amount of hair, dirt, and grime, and needs a little bit of love.

It seems wild that we have to wash our washing machines, but running a cycle of baking soda and vinegar or bleach as part of your cleaning routine once a month could be all you need to do to keep unwanted smells and gross buildup from coming anywhere near your favorite outfits.

5. Mold or mildew

If these words make you as nervous as they make me, don't worry. We're in this together. Unfortunately, the dark and damp inside of a washing machine is pretty much prime territory for mold and mildew (yikes). These are caused by pretty much all of the other issues we've run through so far, and can also be found in the rubber seal area of your machine. 

Prevent these as best as you can by regularly wiping down your machine's seal, interior, and exterior with disinfectant wipes. If you do find a mold or musty smell is still coming out, run a cycle using bleach and spot-treat and scrub with a small amount of special mold-removing spray — a bottle of RMR-86 from Amazon will take it out.

As a certified vanilla girl, you'd best believe every pair of sneakers I own are a combination of white, beige, or pastel. They're all adorable, but they get dirty real quick. Can you wash sneakers in the washing machine?

The short answer? Most likely. TBH, a majority of materials are actually washing-machine safe, with the exception of leather and suede. With that being said, designers and manufacturers advise against putting your sneakers in the machine on your next laundry day with all your other items. Any warranty you have on your shoes will most likely be voided by doing this. 

If you're not sure what exactly your sneakers are made of or they're designed using multiple materials (like a suede swoosh or logo), it's best to play it safe and hand-wash.

If you've checked everything and are ready to get your shoes in the washing machine, there are some steps you can take before and while machine-washing your shoes to protect both your sneakers and your washing machine. 

Clean off any loose mud, dirt, and small rocks lodged into the soles by hand first. Pop your sneakers in a laundry bag (these ones from Amazon are perfect) or pillowcase, and opt for a mild detergent and run your shoes on a delicate or gentle setting at a cold temperature with an oxi stain remover (The Pink Stuff has one and you can buy it at The Home Depot) or a cup of baking soda — we always use Arm & Hammer, which you can pick up from Amazon — if you need an extra boost for stains or odors.

Can your shoes go in the dryer? 

Cleaning your sneakers in the washing machine can be a great shortcut, but the dryer is a big no-no.

Most sneakers are constructed with an adhesive, which is why it's crucial to run them at a cooler temperature when they're in the washing machine. The hot air in a dryer will almost definitely melt away the glue holding your fave pair of shoes together, which is the last thing you want. 

Instead of sending your shoes tumbling, lay them out to air-dry. Unless you're cleaning up white shoes, it's best to do this in an area out of direct sunlight, as the sun can have a bleaching effect that will leave more colorful shoes looking washed out. 

I speak from personal experience when I say this: Give your sneakers at least 12 hours to dry to avoid walking out with squishy soles. 

My shoe washing essentials

Whether it's self-care Sunday, errand run Tuesday, food shop Friday — or whatever day of the week you choose to tick off your home to-do list, laundry is likely patiently waiting for you. This week, designate a specific laundry day to get it all done. I'm talking bed sheets, pillowcases, protectors, duvets, AND pillows. Yes, the big bedding refresh. But before you get going and start using your washer and dryer to their full potential, can you wash pillows in the washing machine? 

I spend my time testing a bunch of the best pillows, along with other bedding buys, and they aren't cheap. We all know how an incorrect wash cycle can ruin your fave sweater. The same goes for bedding, but completely avoiding the wash won't do our pillows any favors either when it comes to longevity. 

So I've asked the experts and found out there's more than just a simple yes or no answer (annoying, but it pays to know how to wash your pillows properly). Whether you can wash pillows in the washing machine depends on a couple of things.

Can you wash pillows in the washing machine? 

Just like your duvet, bed sheets, and the rest of your laundry, you can just throw a pillow in the washing machine, too, right? Well, that's what I thought. Whether you can wash a pillow in the washing machine really depends on what it's made of and how big it is.

"You'll want to check and thoroughly read the care label instructions," says vice president of marketing at CD One Price Cleaners Jonathan Reckles. "Most care tags will recommend hand washing or dry cleaning, with some allowing for a machine washing at a low temperature and rinse speed." If you're unsure, Jill Zwarensteyn, editor for Sleep Advisor and a certified sleep science coach recommends "always using a cool and gentle wash pre-set if your machine has one."

And of course, its size will determine whether you can pop it in the wash, or not, too. FYI: Your drum should never be more than three-quarters full — especially when washing bedding, as you'll want enough room for the water and suds to drain as much as possible.

So, let’s be honest, no one wants to have to outlay a ton of money for washing machine installation at the moment, do they?  But is there another option, I hear you ask, it’s pretty technical, isn’t it? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered and you can learn how to install a washing machine yourself with our handy guide below.  

You’ll only need a few tools and an hour or so.

This guide is the same for an integrated or non-integrated washing machine. For an integrated machine, you will need to install the door once you have finished installing the machine. 

Before you start:

You should at this stage have a spot ready for your washing machine, like in your utility room. The kitchen is often where it's kept in smaller UK homes. You should also have the drain, water supply and a power point located.

These are normally already installed in the space. If they aren’t then I’d recommend speaking with a plumber and an electrician about the best place to install your machine before continuing. 

Step 1: Remove the transit bolts and insert the clips

When your washing machine arrives it will usually come packaged up, with four transit bolts installed in each corner.  You don’t need these transit bolts for installation, they’re simply for transit as their name would suggest. They hold the internal contents of the drum in place. This is because inside the machine there is a large piece of concrete, along with some other parts, that helps the washing machine function. If this moves around in transit then there is a risk that it will damage the machine however once the machine is installed, we want it to move around as this allows the suspension to work and ensures that the drum is cushioned. The main point is that the bolts are only for transit then you can recycle them! 

To remove the bolts twist them with a spanner like this one from Jetech, this will reveal a hole under each bolt (there are usually four, one on each corner of the reverse of the machine). You can then insert the clips (which will have come with the machine) into each hole. These will be small clips that slot into the hole and then spring out to expand and fill the gap, usually you simply push them into place.

Step 2: Adjust the leveling bolts

Washing machines usually have four feet and four leveling bolts which control whether the feet are raised or lowered. There are two at the front and two at the back. The purpose of these feet is to help ensure the appliance sits on the ground properly and is level, however, you need to move them out of the way for installation so that the machine can be easily moved around. Usually, the front feet are already raised up into the machine, but the back are lowered. Using a screwdriver, like this one from AMM adjust the leveling bolts so that they raise up and lift the feet up. This will mean that underneath the machine is now flat and easier to maneuver. 

Step 3: connect the hoses

On the back of your washer, you will have two hoses, one for filling the machine, which you connect to the water supply and the other for the drain. 

To connect the filling hose to the water supply, screw it on with your hand and then tighten it with a spanner. Feed the second hose down into the drainpipe. You need to make sure it gets down to the spot just above the u-bend; it must be far down enough so that it doesn’t flip out when water is pumped through it, but not too far into the u-bend that it will obstruct the water from coming out.

You will find a clip like the one shown in the picture below in your installation kit, this is the tube clip that prevents the tube from coming away once water is pumped through.

Once you have found the ideal spot for the hose, attach the clip to the hose, ensuring it is tucked into the pipe.

Step 4: position your machine, level it and switch on 

Once both hoses are installed, plug your machine in and then slide it into the position you want it to be so that the hoses and power cable are behind it.

Make sure that you don’t trap the hoses when sliding it into place as you may damage or restrict the water flow. Lower the feet and then level your machine. 

Place a level like this one from Amazon basics onto both the side and top of the machine, ensuring that it is level and adjusting the feet and position until it is so that it spins properly. Once you’re happy with the position, you can run a short test wash as per the manufacturer's instructions to ensure it is all working properly. 

Of course, if you have any concerns with installation or run into any problems, pause what you're doing and contact your local plumber. Otherwise, by following these steps along with the washing machine manufacturer's instructions you should have your appliance up and running efficiently in no time at all. 

Make sure you take care of your new appliance too. Keeping a washing machine clean will mean it runs efficiently, making laundry a breeze and increasing its longevity. It's a win-win!

How to clean a washing machine

Step 1: Check the manual and cycle settings

As a first step, read your washing machine’s manual for instructions on how to clean it; some manufacturers mention that certain cleaning and descaling products are a major no-no, so better be safe than sorry, bestie! You don't want an angry landlord on your hands. 

Now is also a good time to check the hottest setting you have on your washer and to see how long that cycle is. That'll give you a good idea of how long this process will take as a whole.

Step 2: Clean the detergent drawer

Pop out the drawer where you pour your detergent and rinse it in your sink. Use an old toothbrush to get all of the grime and mold off. If it's still looking gross after this step, leave it to soak in hot soapy water. Clean out the cavity it sits in with a microfiber cloth and toothbrush. This'll ensure mold is removed and doesn't contaminate the drawer again. You'll be surprised how nasty this part of your machine gets!

Step 3: Clean the rubber seals

Despite it constantly getting soaked and covered in soap, the seals around the door and drum of your washing machine can gather a nice little family of mold and mildew. Grab a microfiber cloth and get it damp with vinegar or dip a toothbrush in baking powder to serve as your cleaning tool. Wipe or scrub the seals and gently lift them up to clean underneath. You can also use a toothbrush to get any grime that's stuck on there. Once you've cleaned it, dry it with a fresh microfiber cloth.

Step 4: Run your washing machine's hottest cycle

Once these parts of your washing machine are clean, you can basically leave it to do the rest itself. Find the hottest cycle it has, make sure no clothes are inside, add your washing machine cleaner, like Tide's individually-wrapped powder packets, which you can get on Amazon, and press start. 

Some newer models have a dedicated washing machine cleaning cycle designed to run safely without popping anything in. Just double-check the manual online to decode the washing symbols and make sure you've picked the right setting. 

Step 5 (optional): Disinfect your washing machine

Cleaning a washing machine with bleach isn't as scary as it sounds. It's one of the best cleaning supplies out there and is hard to beat when it comes to blasting bacteria and germs.

It's also best to double-check that your washing machine can be cleaned with solutions like bleach or white vinegar (just read the manual). You don't want to damage anything or void the warranty! 

Step 6: Clean the washing machine filter

If you didn't even realize your washing machine had an accessible filter, you're not alone. It usually sits beneath the drum, almost touching the floor. To clean the washing machine filter, pull it out like the detergent drawer and scrub it down. Feel free to soak it in hot water and use a toothbrush to slough off grime. Be sure to clean out the area it sits in, too.

Check your washing machine's instructions to find out how to remove the cover if it's fixed, and how to remove the filter. The user manual should also explain how to clean the filter. You may need to place a bowl or tray on a towel beneath it to catch leaks from the drain. Replace the cover carefully.

Knowing how to disconnest a washing machine is essential for anyone who owns one. It is not just something that can be left to an engineer for servicing and repair – there are times when every homeowner will have to do it themselves. If you are moving home or buying a replacement, for example.

And although some tradesmen will disconnect the machine for you, others will need you to disconnect it before they come, especially if they'll be taking away your machine. 

Also, even the best washing machines sometimes break down mid-cycle, in which case you'll want to disconnect yours as soon as possible. 

Whatever the reason you need to disconnect your washing machine, here's how to do it quickly and safely. 

How to disconnect a washing machine 

Whatever the reason for you disconnecting your washing machine – it needs to be replaced or is leaking – you'll need arm yourself with a bucket and towels, as you will need to collect the water that will come out of the pipes (don't be alarmed by this, it's normal).  Even a functioning washing machine that has finished pumping out will still have a bit of residual water in the outlets.

1. Switch off the water supply

To properly disconnect your washing machine, you first will need to switch off the water supply. In newer homes, your water supply on/off valve will be in the washer box, which is located either directly above or behind your washing machine. Some modern washers can have an automatic shut-off valve that will cut off the water supply if a leak is detected. 

In other cases, there may be a pipe to the washing machine that has an isolated valve to switch off.

2. Unplug the machine

Now, before you do anything else, make sure you unplug you washing machine from the wall. If your plug is behind the washing machine, you will need to perform step three first.

3. Pull the washing machine out

You will need your bucket and towels at this point. Pull the washer away from th wall, as far as you can without disconnecting it. Place the towels and buckets at the back of the machine, where the hoses are. 

4. Disconnect the hoses

You will see two pipes: the water pipe (usually blue, connected to the wall) and the waste pipe, usually grey and ribbed, connected to the kitchen waste. You'll need a wrench to unscrew the water pipe from the wall. Do this carefully, with the bucket positioned underneath the pipe, as some water will come out. Once you've disconnected it from the wall, pull out the other end from the machine with a bucket or towel below to catch any run off. 

The waste pipe is even easier to remove – simply pull it out of the waste pipe it is inserted in, but again, take care to catch any wastewater that comes out as you do so. Disconnect the other end from the machine. Mop up any excess water on the floor with a towel. That's it, you're ready to remove your old machine.

If your washer is full of water and you can't move it to disconnect it, you'll need to do step five (below) first.

5. If you washer is full of water, drain it first

Jake Romano, of John The Plumber, says that 'if the washing machine is full of water, you might have a hard time moving it.' And if your washing machine is not draining and has locked itself into anti-flood mode, you'll have to empty in manually. Romano has several options for doing this, depending on the type of washing machine you have.

So, if you have a top loader, try the following:

• Use a cup or small bucket to bail the washing machine.
• Use a wet/dry vacuum. If you have a small shopvac, place it in your laundry sink, vacuum out as much water as the vacuum can handle, empty it into the sink, and repeat.
• Use a water pump if you have one. (E.g. a pump used for draining flooded basements or boats or used in hydroponic gardens or fish tanks).
• If you have a long piece of hose, use this to siphon the water from the machine to a sink, bucket, or outside.

If you have a front loader and you need to empty it, you'll need to drain it through the filter at the front, which can be accessed by removing the bottom panel of your washing machine. Removing the bottom panels sometimes requires unscrewing it on older models, but most newer models allow you to remove it quite easily by gently pulling it. 

Then 'there will usually be a screw cap. Unscrew when you're ready to release the water. Put the cap back when it's drained.

'Some machines aren't designed to drain as easily. You may need to turn a knob under the drain pump filter. But the water will drain underneath and it can be messy.' 

The more towels you can use for this job, the better! The filter is pretty low so a bucket will not fit underneath. If you have a shallow tray this will catch some (but probably not all) of the water.

Can one person disconnect a washing machine?

Yes, if you're strong enough to pull the washing machine out. Disconnecting a washing machine is a relatively easy job, and if you can gently slide the washing machine back (some have wheels), you can move it out of the way easily. 

What you shouldn't attempt is moving a disconnected washing machine up/down stairs or loading it onto a vehicle – these are two-person jobs, always.

Do I need to unplug the washing machine before I shut off the water supply?

Romano says: 'It doesn't really matter what you do first, whether you unplug the machine or turn off the water supply. Just make sure you do both!'

How to use a washing machine entails a little more effort than you would think. 

And it's pretty important to get right for the sake of your appliance, clothes, and other bits you want to get bling. Chris Jindra, senior brand manager, Proctor & Gamble explains, 'Loading your washing machine correctly can give you much better washing results, not to mention also help you cut down on waste.'

Don't overload the washing machine

When using a washing machine, our advice begins with a lesson on overstuffing your machine. If you cram clothes too tightly in the machine, water won't have room properly circulate, leading to wrinkles and limited stain removal.

Even if you have a large load, the items shouldn't fill the washer more than three quarters full and the items should be evenly and loosely spread out. 

'Your load may not feel too heavy when it goes into the machine, but just imagine how heavy it will be once it’s soaking wet. Too much weight can unbalance the machine and affect its performance over time. Another reason not to cram.' says Lara Brittain, category director, Currys.

Front loading washing machines should have clothes piled no more than the top of the door. For top-loaders, avoid loading past the agitator. 

If you are washing duvets or other large items like blankets and rugs, put them in separately adding a few towels for proper spinning action.

Iain Starkey, head of brand, Beko explains more. He says:

'A good rule of thumb to follow is to fill the drum to about 80% without compacting items down (this only applies to normal cotton cycles – the amount of laundry you can put in for special programmes will vary, so check your appliance’s user manual).'

'When it comes to actually putting your laundry into the machine, put items in one by one, or at least make sure they’re not tangled.'

Evan Brody, chief marketing officer, Tide also suggests this nifty trick: 'So here’s the palm trick you could try every time to check if you’re machine is overloaded: Just place your hand into the drum – it’s easy as that.'

'If your hand fits between your clothes and the wall of the drum, then you have the perfect load size. If not, it’s best to take something out. If you find you’ve got even more space in there, you can add more clothes to save more water.'

And how to load a washing machine that's top loaded usually differs from front load washing machines. Brody explains:

'Every machine is different when it comes to the load sizes they can handle. Top loaders are usually not as large as front-loading machines, so a full load would be about 12 pounds of laundry.'

'Make sure to check the washer’s capacity recommendation for the exact amount.'

Follow loading order

How to load a washing machine in the correct order? 

Always make sure you check loading instructions for your washer so you prevent excessive detergent suds, potential fabric damage and any other mishaps. 

The most common load order is detergent, then clothes and once you've got everything in, set the correct temperature and cycle to start the machine, stat.

Most front loading machines have a handy detergent dispenser which will dispense the detergent just at the right time.

Add correct detergent (and the right amount of it)

Adding the correct amount of detergent is also key in getting your washing right. 

If you load the clothes in right, but the detergent dosage is wrong, you'll also have semi-unwashed clothes to deal with at the end of the cycle.

The easiest way to add detergent correctly is with the best washing pods as opposed to liquid detergent.

Paying attention to the washing detergent instructions is the key to getting your wash right. 

Liquid detergent can be measured out and can go either in the drum or dispenser, whereas washing powder needs to go in the dispenser.

'Detergent takes a long time to dissolve and using too much makes it harder to wash it out.' says Brittain.

'Fortunately, many washing machines pre-mix the detergent and softener with water before it enters the drum. The detergent is fully dissolved, with the mix getting to work immediately. That means you can go easy on the detergent and still get great results!'

However, there are other factors that need to be considered when choosing the correct dosage, such as how soiled the clothes are and the level of water hardness.

Kate Cecile-Pritchard, user marketing manager, Bosch explains more about how to load a washing machine with detergent. She says: 'Using too much or too little detergent in your washing machine can lead to poor washing results.' 

'When it comes to using the correct dosage of detergent, there are three key facts to consider.'

'The amount of dirt in the washing. The more dirty the clothes are, the more detergent that's needed to remove it.'

'You may not see it, but approximately 70% of dirt on clothes comes from the body, such as skin, sweat, grease and other bodily fluids. Only 30% of dirt on clothes comes from external sources, such as food, mud, grass, lotions and creams.'

'The size of the washing load. Detergent dosage instructions are based upon a washing machine's drum size, and for good reason.' 

'The larger the washing load, the more dirt introduced and therefore the more detergent that's needed to remove it.'

'The water hardness level in your area. Hard water contains a high concentration of minerals which need to be softened and neutralized for more effective cleaning results.'

'It's for this reason that detergent manufacturers recommend using slightly more detergent than normal in hard water areas.'

Know when to use fabric softener (and when to avoid it)

Fabric conditioners (also known as fabric softeners) are a great way to keep your clothes feeling and smelling great. Just as you'd use shampoo to clean your hair, and conditioner to improve the texture of your tresses, you can use this liquid to give garments and homeware a luxury feel. Plus, it can also help to remove creases in your clothes.

However, before you use a cap-sized amount in your wash, note that it should be avoided in some instances. For example, cleanfluencer Lynsey Crombie, aka Lynsey Queen of Clean, says to avoid using this product when washing your microfiber cloths. 

Asia Banger, brand manager, Persil says: 'Any item that is intended to absorb – such as hand and bath towels, tea towels, and microfiber cloths that are designed to absorb water, and quick-dry sportswear which absorbs sweat, should be treated with care. To keep towels soft and fluffy, yet still absorbent – wash alternately with and without fabric conditioner.'

And Brittain warns: 'Fabric softeners aren’t for everyone,'

'They can often contain chemicals that produce allergic reactions in some people. If you have young children or sensitive skin and want to try something a bit more natural, try adding vinegar to your wash – it’s non-toxic and perfume-free, and it will leave your clothes feeling as soft and fluffy as ever.'

So if your family does suffer from dermatological (skin) conditions like eczema or psoriasis, seek medical advice first, but we'd suggest looking for the best eco-friendly washing powders and liquids for a fresh laundry load without the use of toxic chemicals or additives.

Prevent common laundry mistakes 

Need to know how to use a washing machine without making any mistakes? We've got some pointers for you.

Reading the care labels or washing symbols on garments will give you a clear indication on what cycle to use for them and make sure mishaps are avoided. 

If you have time, (we know, we know, you don't) before adding clothes into the washer – give the pockets a quick check. 

There could be a tissue stuffed in one, maybe an electronic car key (which will get damaged) or loose coins which could all not only wreak havoc in your machine but could damage your clothes too.

Another one of our laundry hacks is to prep items by doing up zippers, fastening hooks, unrolling cuffs, tying drawstrings, turning pockets inside out. 

You could go one step further by turning dark clothes, like jeans, inside out to preserve their color and protect other items in the process.

To back our theory up, Brittain says: 'Do you often take dark clothes such as black jeans out of the wash to find them covered in white streaks?'

'This is usually caused by friction inside the washing machine which rubs the dye away. The best way to avoid it? Try turning your clothes inside out before the wash. That way, most of the rubbing will happen to the inside of your garments.

Wash items at the right temperature

Using a washing machine at a high temperature won't necessarily deliver better results and you should be careful with delicate materials, especially if you want to know to how to wash silk pillowcases and your fave designer dresses without racking up an expensive dry cleaning bill.

'Washing at 30º used to mean you compromised on cleaning power – while washing your best bath towels or bed sheets at a cooler temperature were a complete no-no.' says Brittain.

'30 is the new 60 – modern washing machines work wonderfully at lower temperatures. They can even purify water of harsh minerals so that detergent is activated at much lower temperatures. The result? The thing with cleaning your washing machine is that no matter how good the washing machine cleaner you're using, sometimes it's just best to give your machine a good-old manual scrub. This particularly applies to the tray and tray compartment area, the door, and the rubber seal. 

Cleaning these parts of your washing is crucial to keeping your washing machine hygienic. When you read horror stories about washing machines accumulating enough bacteria to potentially make you sick, they're not really talking about the metal drum (although it can, of course, also become unhygienic over time if you don't do hot washes). It's actually the plastic and rubber parts that tend to collect bacteria. 

The inside of the door is also a potentially unhygienic area – if, like we do, you leave your washing machine door open to air out the inside, then it will collect dust and bacteria, especially if your washing machine is anywhere near your kitchen worktops. In hard water areas, bacteria and dust will settle on top of detergent residue, making the problem worse. 

Which is why every month or so, we take our collection of scrubby cloths to our washing machines. We've tried all sorts of things, and microfibre cloths win hands down, every time. The word 'micro' is key here: the small fibres physically pick up dirt and bacteria rather than just moving them around. E-cloth started the whole microfibre cleaning thing, and we still regularly use a classic e-cloth to thoroughly scrub the door, inside the rubber seal, and the tray. 

Never use a kitchen sponge for cleaning your washing machine: all you'll get is a load of foam with the bacteria and grime suspended inside it – very difficult to completely remove that foam from your machine. 

And what about the old toothbrush trick for cleaning the tray? Maybe we're becoming germ-phobic, but if you use it more than a couple of times, then you will have bacteria on that toothbrush. We've started using a silicone bottle brush to reach those washing machine tray corners instead. 

Washing our clothes and other linens in a washing machine is an essential part of running a household. It will keep your favourite garments looking their best at all times and will ensure that you always have fresh bed sheets to snuggle in to, especially during these colder months. And with the children back to school, a quick turn around of lifting persistent grass stains from trousers and ketchup from white school shirts is a must, too.

Given the past, current and future Covid-19 situ, we (Real Homes and I) were incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to put this machine – the first model in the UK – through its paces. And sure, we’re just a two-person house but crumbs do my husband and I create a lot of laundry. Who will the Haier HWD120-B14979 Freestanding Washer Dryer suit? 

This appliance is best suited for busy households who just want to stick a load of washing on, and forget about it on a daily basis. A washer dryer is also a fab choice if you just don't have the space for a washing machine AND tumble dryer – it's a two-in-one machine which, essentially, does your laundry for you.

How easy is the Haier HWD120-B14979 Freestanding Washer Dryer to use? 

Like anything new, in particular anything marginally technical, it takes me a while to get used to it so it becomes second nature. And, let’s face it, we need a washing machine to be easy to navigate and quick to respond. Before we get into the nitty gritty it’s worth saying that it’s advised by Haier to run programme “Cotton+90 degrees+600rpm" with no load  and a small amount of detergent in the washing compartment or special machine cleaner, which will remove any chemical or plastic smells that are often found with new machines.

And just like that, after just a few washes and reading the easy-to-follow instructions, I could very easily hop around the programmes and select functions such as stain removal and / or delay start times with confidence. To do this I used a combination of turning the dial and pressing buttons which lit up on the LED touch screen found on the left hand-side of the control panel; the dial is used to select the programmes and the touch screen is used to adjust temperature, spin speed, stain removal and drying levels. As someone who does often have colder hands, however, the touch screen power button needed a few presses from me to switch on. 

My husband had no problem with this, however, but what he did say (because his opinion matters here, too) is that you’ll need to read the instructions BEFORE having a go at putting the washing on. He went to select a programme cold and found the interface confusing to start with, especially since the top panel of the machine is touch screen and the bottom part operated by the dial. This is something which could be a big change for some households, particularly the older generation, so it’s worth having a think about whether or not you would feel comfortable using a touchscreen before investing.

This washer dryer is not smart per-se but, actually, I feel it is smart in its’ own right because it doesn’t make anything complicated whilst still addressing whatever life throws its way. One (of the many) things I was impressed with is the Auto Weight which means that washing time is automatically reduced in some programs – Cotton, Synthetics, Mix, Cotton 20ºC, Eco 40-60ºC – which reduces energy, water and washing time. 

Further to this, there are 14 programmes to choose from which includes Cotton (the one I used the most), Synthetics, Duvet, Wool, Delicates, Wash & Dry and Express 15. There’s also an Auto programme to make life a little easier and, I must say, it did a really good job. When I used this particular setting it was just a matter of powering up the machine, selecting Auto and pressing the ‘play’ button. This was for a wash and touch dry (suitable for wearing dry level) which ran for four hours 15 mins, which isn’t too bad considering that you could wear the clothes straight out of the washing machine, if you wanted to.

On select programmes – Cotton, Synthetic and Mix – you have a Stain Removal function. This was brilliant, if the stain was new. For example, I purposely split some soy sauce, ketchup and red wine (don’t worry, not too much) and let it soak in for a few hours to see what the results would be. You can see from the photograph that there is no evidence of any mishaps and it even did a pretty good job of removing the Biro ink, too. Yet, on some old muddy towels we use to dry our guinea pigs after a bath, the mud remained on the fabric.

Another function which I gave a whirl was i-Refresh. This is to further remove odour, dust, mites and moisture from small amounts of laundry (single items is recommended). I tested this on our king size mattress protector, which I had NOT washed, although it was only laundered a couple of weeks ago. In all honesty, there wasn’t too much difference between the before and after of using this function but it did come out warm and felt a little softer.

Further washing programmes I used were Mix, Fast, Express 15, Synthetic and Wash + Dry which were all just as good as one another and gave some good versatility depending on what it was I needed washing. But, as a side note, the Wash+Dry programme (for example) is not clear how long it will run for, until it has been selected and the machine is running (for ref, it’s 5.47 hours). The good news here is that you can interrupt / cancel wash programmes by pressing the Start/Pause. From here you can then turn off and turn back on the machine, and reselect a more suitable programme.

Now onto the drying of the laundry. Initially I was pretty concerned about our laundry using the dry setting because, as someone who does not own a tumble dryer, this is something which I hadn’t tried out before. As I’ve mentioned earlier, the Cotton programme was one which I used the most and it’s on this programme which I also enabled the drying function. There are three touch dry levels to choose from which, depending on which you choose from, means that your laundry can either be stored, worn or it’s good for ironing. I used the ‘stored’ dry level on our cotton towels which took around four hours. Yep, it’s a long time but it was a godsend when it was raining outside and it was sooo worth the wait because the towels came out of the machine warm, dry and super soft. But. It did have a slight stuffy smell / plastic smell after drying, which may or may not be because it is a new machine but it's something to be aware of. To rid of this slight odour I just shook the laundry to fold away which did the trick, so no biggy. I also noticed that there was some fluff stuck to the inside of the door after using the dryer but this was easily removed by wiping it with a wet cloth.

Anything else?

Essentially there are three settings of noise which I’ve taken into account with this appliance; washing, spinning and drying. The machine can be padded out with some noise reduction pads at the point of installation – more on this later – which will help to keep the noise levels down when in operation. But, although I didn’t see any vibrations, I could certainly hear the machine from one end of the house to the other, especially when on Spin which the spec says is 72dB confirming that it is something which may not go unnoticed. Washing (53dB) and drying (59dB) was comparably quiet, however.

Whilst we're on the subject of noise – and because I’m being extra vigilant due to this review – you can hear the machine filling up with water, and setting the gears in motion as it begins its cycle. Not loud, just something I wanted to point out if you're after a super quiet machine; before AND during the cycles.

Also when you turn the machine on there is a light just inside on the rubber rim which comes on, too. This light stays lit for approx. 30 seconds into the cycle until it automatically switches off. I thought it would be good if this light could either be on all the time or when I wanted to take a peek at the washing (who doesn’t like watching the washing go round?). I couldn’t find anything in the instruction manual with a quick look BUT after turning the dial clockwise when the cycle was on, the light came back on. This was a huge success moment (you’re welcome to this top tip!)

Haier HWD120-B14979 Freestanding Washer Dryer design

To follow suit with a lot of the other newer washing machine models, the Haier HWD120-B14979 is a front loading machine which can be accessed through a large door. You can see the washing through the door which is lit up with the internal light at the start of a wash, and when you choose to activate it again by the turning the dial.

To look at, the machine is deceptively large and the dials on the front is something which we’re all used to seeing on this sort of appliance. As mentioned earlier, though, the LED panel – which takes some getting used to – lights up when the machine is on. The only time when you will not see the panel is when the machine is off. It will automatically go into stand-by if not activated within two minutes before starting a program or ending a programme.

The drum is a pillow drum design which not only looks very nice but the special pillow-shaped pads allow the laundry to gently slip gently over the surface as the drum spins to maintain the quality of clothing. This means that it is super gentle on your delicates, and could be why everything feels so lovely and soft after each wash.

When the washer dryer was delivered to me it was also installed by a pair of engineers, who brought the machine into my home and connected it all up for me. Looking at the instructions – which looks easy enough to follow – you’ll definitely need a couple of people to help prepare the space and unpackage the appliance. It’s worth manoeuvring the appliance into, or close to, where you want it to reside, next to a cold water supply and electrical socket, whilst you unpackage it. It's at this point that you can also install noise reduction pads around the bottom of the machine which attach with some adhesive.

Cleaning and maintaining the Haier HWD120-B14979 Freestanding Washer Dryer 

It may seem like an oddity but our washing machines need a wash, too. If you live in a hard water area then it is advisable to use water softener tablets, such as Calgon washing machine tablets, with each wash which will flush out the pipes and help to protect your machine from limescale damage.

When not in use, a damp cloth is all you need to remove any fluff left over from a dry and remove any build up of gunk in the rubber seal. Regular removable of any items trapped in the rubber seal is also a must. For a more thorough clean then the instruction manual has all this covered – it really is a very comprehensive instruction booklet.

Real Homes verdict

As this is a new washer dryer to the market there are no customer reviews to report on, but our verdict (in a nutshell) after using it ourselves is that the appliance performed well during testing and as expected.

It’s a great option if you want to just put the washing on and forget about it because by the time you come to empty it, your laundry will be fresh and dry. More suitable for every day use, rather than specific laundry days, due to the fact that the cycles can run into a few hours if you opt for a wash AND dry. And, although the touch screen panel is a relatively new thing, compared to our older washing machines, it does take some getting used to so if you prefer just dials and more obvious buttons then it is worth having a good old think if you would be happy to rely on a touchscreen for hopping around the programme settings.

Overall it is a very good washer dryer for busy households who have limited space –inside the home and in the garden – who don't mind doing the laundry every other day, rather than on one set day in the week.

Speed & noise level

The FlexWash features anti-vibration technology that reduces cycle vibration by 40 percent. Plus, the motor that works without a belts or gears. What that means for you: a fairly quiet washing machine, even when it's powering through a spin cycle. Speaking of spin cycles, this one will spin your clothes at up to 1300 rpm.

Additional features

It sounds like stating the obvious, but this washing machine is really good at cleaning clothes. Reviewers note that greasy work uniforms, stains kids clothes, and the stinkiest loads of laundry emerge looking fresh and revived.

One of our favorite features though has to be the stain soak function, which premixes water, detergent, and stain remover, and optimized the wash program based on the type of stain you select.

Other conveniences?

The detergent dispenses accepts both liquid detergent and laundry pods, and it's got interior lighting. Plus, the door reverses so you can adjust it to open to your preferred side. 

If you've got a large family, bigger is better when it comes to your washing machine, and in that case, the LG WM9000HVA is one of the best around. It may be a large machine, but the LG WM9000HVA is still energy efficient. LG's TurboWash® technology also cuts the wash time of large loads by up to 30 minutes.

Speed and noise level

How to find the best front load washing machine

When deciding on the best front-load washing machine for your home, here are a few things you should consider.

Washing machine drum capacity

One of the most important factors to consider is how much laundry your machine will hold. A compact machine, like the Miele or Bosch options featured above, hold just over two cubic feet, making them great picks for singles or couples. Large families, on the other hand, will find that capacity too small. The best washing machines for families will hold at least four cubic feet of laundry, but large families may want to consider five or more cubic feet. 

And remember: just because the clothes can physically fit into a washing machine doesn't mean you should run stuff it full. Most washing machines perform best at about half-full.

Dimensions and fit

Generally speaking, most full-size front load washing machines are around the same size, but where you're tucking an appliance into a tight closet or utility room, it's a good idea to get an exact measurement of the space you're working with. That way you'll be 100 percent sure your washer fits when you get it home.

Owners of Hotpoint washing machines will be dismayed to learn that the Whirlpool washing machine recall has just been extended to a further 21 models. The recall, which has been rolled out over recent months, has involved Hotpoint and Indesit washing machines. A fault in the door mechanism has caused some washing machine doors to overheat, causing as many as 79 fires in people's homes.

As of 29th April, Whirlpool have added a whopping 21 further models to the list of machines that should not be used and will need repairing or replacing. Owners of Hotpoint machines who previously wouldn't been reassured that their appliance is safe will now need to consult the Whirlpool recall website again with their washing machine model and serial number.

It is being advised by Whirlpool that if you own any of these three additional models, or any other models on the list, to call 0800 316 1442. If your washing machine is among those being recalled you will have the option to receive either a comparable replacement or an in-home repair of your appliance – free of charge.

The Hotpoint washing machine recall is still being rolled out by Whirlpool. So far, they have dealt with approximately 30 per cent of appliances that put their owners at a fire risk, following their announcement just before Christmas that dozens of Hotpoint (and several Indesit) models were unsafe to use. 

A problem with the door mechanism means that the door may overheat and catch fire, with several people having reported melting doors and doors emitting smoke. So, it's worth checking that your machine is definitely safe, rather than taking a risk by continuing to use it.

The recall has only begun properly this month – and now Whirlpool have added three more models to the affected models list – WMAQC641PUK, WMAQG741PUK, and WMFG741GUK, following further tests. 

The addition of three more models to the fire risk list follows a tide of complaints that began in December 2019, when affected customers couldn't get through to the Whirlpool helpline, and their website crashed following the sharp increase in visitors. Furthermore, Whirlpool have been criticised for not offering any refunds and putting people on a waiting list for repair or replacement. Whirlpool have defended their decision as a way to ensure that no unsafe appliances find their way to the resale market.

When was the last time you cleaned your washing machine? If the answer is 'not for a while' or 'err... never', it's likey to smell or at least be a little grimy. If you notice bad odours, this means mould or bacteria may be building up inside, while washing muddy clothes worn by active children on dirty dog walks will take its toll on any machine, which will also result in poorer washing results all round. 

Before you start, always read your washing machine’s manual for instructions on how to clean it – it's not worth invalidating your warranty if the manufacturer discourages certain methods.

1. Clean a washing machine's detergent drawer

The washing machine detergent drawer gets surprisingly dirty for an area that's designed to hold detergent. You'll find that mould and mildew – and just general gunk – can quickly build up, and with it, bacteria. Not a great place to start your wash, right? 

Now: To begin cleaning your washing machine, remove the detergent drawer at the front of the machine (check your manual if you need advice for how to fully remove it). Soak the drawer in hot, soapy water and, using an old toothbrush, scrub away any soap build up or mould. Rinse thoroughly, and dry with a tea towel. Before you put it back, clean out the cavity – it's likely there's some hidden mould there, too.

Later: Leave the detergent drawer open in between wash cycles, to prevent mould growing in there. Use only as much detergent as is necessary, following the guidelines on the packaging; overloading detergent will create a build up inside the machine.

2. Clean a washing machine with vinegar

Cleaning your washing machine once a month is a wise move. It will help keep your whites whiter and ensure a sweet-smelling pile of laundry. 

Now: Set your machine on its hottest cycle (or a minimum of 60ºC) and pour 230ml of white vinegar directly into to the drum. The vinegar is the perfect solution to help to purify your machine – it's an excellent, natural way to kill bacteria, and the smell will disappear during the rinse cycle. 

Later: Keep a bottle of white vinegar handy near your washing machine – perhaps alongside your washing powder. That way, you'll easily remember to keep up the cleaning routine.

3. Clean a washing machine with bicarbonate of soda or baking soda

Using bicarbonate of soda is one of our very favourite cleaning hacks. It'll tackle washing machines with ease, but you can use it to clean everything from fridges to carpets, too, so having some handy is useful.

Now: Add two tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda into the detergent drawer, this will be acting as the soap. The soda and vinegar work together to naturally break through dirt and remove mould while cleansing and refreshing your washing machine. Start the hot cycle. 

Later: Once a month run an empty hot wash to eliminate any build-up and smells, adding the bicarbonate of soda or vinegar as an extra precaution. 

4. Clean a washing machine with bleach

If you're a fan of cleaning with bleach, you won't baulk at using it to clean a washing machine. It is, obviously, very effective at cleaning dirt and mould from both the drum and detergent drawer of the washing machine, and also the exterior.  

Now: Add half a cup of bleach directly into your washing machine's drum, and half into your detergent drawer. Run an empty hot wash. If you can pause your wash once the machine has filled with water, do so for a good hour. Then start the cycle again. Run an extra rinse cycle to ensure all the bleach has been removed. Once it's finished, wipe down the inside of the door and dry out the seals. 

Later: Next time you put on a wash, ensure it's a white one that might benefit rather than be damaged by any bleach residue left in the washing machine.

5. Leave the washing machine to dry

Cleaning a washing machine doesn't just involve cleaning – allowing it to dry properly is a must to prevent mould build-up in the first place. 

Now: Let the cycle come to a natural finish and open the door letting the inside of the drum air-dry. If any bad smells or excess grime are lingering repeat the process again.

Later: In between washes leave the door open, or at least until the interior and drum has dried out. This reduces the chance of mould and bacteria growing inside.

The Whirpool washing machine recall could affect as many as half a million people in the UK who own either a Hotpoint or an Indesit washing machine. Whirpool announced the recall following a fire hazard discovered by people whose washing machine doors began overheating.

Following reports of washing machine doors that have been smoking, emitting a burning smell, and even melting, Whirpool said it would offer everyone affected a replacement like-for-like machine, or a no-cost fix.

Unfortunately (and very inconveniently for owners of these machines), the recall won't be rolled out before January, with people claiming they haven't been told how long exactly they'd have to wait for their washing machine to be fixed or replaced. 

Whirpool will not refund owners of faulty machines, and will not accept repairs by anyone but a Whirlpool-registered engineer, which will leave lots of people without a washing machine for weeks. 

However, Whirpool have advised that owners of these machines may be able to continue using them in the meantime if they do all their laundry on the coldest, 20ºC programme. This may well suit some people, but busy families with young children in particular will struggle, given the importance of hot cycles for disinfecting towels and clothes. 

If you think you may be affected, the BBC have a handy list of models that are being recalled. The Whirpool website crashed following people trying to find out whether their washing machine was among the affected ones, but are promising to get it up and running as soon as possible.

Anyone else notice the arrival of the new Ikea washing machine to their kitchen and appliances range? We spotted it recently and thought we'd delve to find out a bit more about it. After all, if you're on the hunt for the best washing machine to go with your new kitchen (from Ikea or otherwise), you might be wondering... is it any good? And is it worth the money (it costs £479)? 

After all, it really is the mechanics and functionality – plus the affordability – of your washing machine that matter the most when it comes to keeping your clothes looking their best, and there's no point shopping for Ikea's washing machine if you can get better elsewhere.

There's another aspect to washing machines that many of us are increasingly concerned about – their water and energy consumption and the resulting impact on the environment. And, of course, the more energy efficient your washing machine, the more you'll be saving on your energy bill.

It turns out that the Ikea Tvattad integrated washing machine fits the bill on all fronts – a valiant effort by Ikea that makes this machine well worth the £479. This is one clever device that manages to resolve a lot of the common issues people have with washing machines. 

Firstly, the Tvattad senses exactly how much laundry has been put into the machine, so it will use just enough water for that load, rather than just using the standard amount of water. It is also able to redistribute the weight of load inside the machine and adjust the spinning speed – something lots of washing machines can't do, which results in the washing machine refusing to spin. 

Next – and this is a godsend for those of us who have a tendency to put in too much detergent – the anti-foam technology in this machine automatically increases the number of spin cycles if too much detergent has been used. It also has an anti-flooding device that will cut off the water supply to the machine if it's overflowing. 

And finally (this is our favourite feature) – the Tvattad has a steam function for decreasing and freshening up clothes without having to wash them at all. Perfect for those 'dry-clean only' items that you'd rather not take to the dry cleaners. 

The catch? This is an integrated model – you can see more in our buyer's guide to integrated washing machines. Our verdict? The price is good and it's had good reviews. It's a handy buy if you're shopping for an Ikea kitchen, particularly for small or open plan kitchens, or for a utility room. 

The Miele W1 washing machine range is the laundry world’s equivalent of a Rolls Royce fleet. For over 100 years, the German home appliance company’s mantra of ‘always better’ has seen it pick up awards for design innovation and sustainability. Naturally, that prowess doesn’t come cheap to the consumer, but then, with many of Miele’s products coming with life-time guarantees, some consider that a price worth paying.

There are 28 different machines in the W1 range, from £699 to £2,199. All of them are based on the Miele’s unique, fabric-protecting honeycomb drum and automatic load control technology which senses the amount of laundry in each wash and adjusts the water usage and electricity consumption accordingly. They also all go well beyond A+++ standards of energy saving.

What divides each model are factors such as drum size, finish colour, maximum spin speed and the odd special program which is worth looking out for. In terms of core washing performance, though, they should all produce similar results to what you read in this review.

We were lucky enough to get hold of the Miele WCR 860 WPS, one of the upper models, which means we could try out all the features which you’ll find throughout the rest of the W1 range. At £1,499, it’s not going to be in everyone’s budget but we should be able to give you an idea of which of its functions will suit you best. Then you can save yourself some money and pick a model that only has the things that you need.

With smart control, power washes, automatic detergent dispensing and full menu of programmes to test out, we sent it to one of our trickiest households to try. Miele W1, meet a family of four outdoor sporty types, two cats (mid-litter training), and loads and loads of mud.

Miele W1 washing machine design

The Miele W1 washing machines are pretty unassuming white cubes until you switch one on and its MTouch, full colour LCD display springs to life. Other than on/off, there are no other on-machine buttons. Everything is controlled from the touchscreen which is simple to understand, easy to use and very response. Full marks there.

Open the door to the 9kg drum and some very tasteful LED lighting springs to life to give you a full, gleaming view of the Miele’s honeycomb drum. Miele says that the design creates a film of water between the highly-polished drum and your fabrics. The idea is that clothes glide on a plane of water instead of getting roughed up by the metal and it’s supposed to prevent bobbling and laddering. And because the draining holes are very small, foreign objects in your wash don’t end up getting stuck inside the drain pump.

In fact, the whole machine is designed to last. Miele’s idea is that each one should be able to run over 10,000 hours without a problem. That’s the equivalent of 5 x 2-hour programmes every week for 20 years. So, sure the W1 is expensive at the outset but there’s definitely savings to be made in the long term.

It also has incredibly low annual energy costs thanks to its quiet and efficient ProfiEco motor and the TwinDos cartridges which dispense the exact amount of liquid detergent required for each different wash programme precisely when needed. The downside is that you can only get new ones from Miele and a 6-month supply comes in at £65 which is quite pricey compared to the equivalent of most other brand’s washing capsules. If you can’t stomach that, then you’ll be relieved to hear that there’s a separate drawer where you can use your own detergent of choice.

You should easily be able to negotiate the installation of your washer — and the disposal of your old one — for free when buying a machine at this level. If your retailer isn’t playing ball then it’s worth shopping elsewhere. Self installation is easy enough if that’s how it ends up, however.

Whoever ends up installing it, make sure that they’re careful not to destroy your flooring as they do so. Sliding a washer across a hard floor can leave scratches. Buy a pack of sticky felt sliders and attach them to the machine’s four feet first. They’ll protect your wood or tiles and make the unit much easier to shift too.

As with most modern washing machines, the Miele W1 is a two hose-affair — one for the water coming in and the other for the waste water going out. The inlet hose comes with a clever double solenoid valve attached at the end. If it senses a leak, it stops the water at your mains stopcock to prevent any further damage and, if that water protection system fails, then Miele will bear the costs. Attach the inlet hose to your copper water pipe and feed the ribbed waste pipe into the open-ended soil pipe at your installation site. Then plug in your washer and away you go. If you’re unsure about any of this, then YouTube is well worth a quick watch.

The Miele W1 series are mostly Wi-Fi-enabled. Get your phone out when next to your installed machine and check that you’re still on your home wireless network. If your phone appears to be on mobile broadband instead, or if the signal is weak, then you might want to consider getting a Wi-Fi extender from the likes of Devolo or TP-Link. That’ll make sure that you can use all the smart functions of your new machine.

The Miele@mobile app is a platform for all of Miele’s smart home devices. From ovens to coffee machines, if it’s made by Miele and Wi-Fi-enabled, then you can add it to your mobile life here and get notifications about what it’s up to as well as a little remote control too.

As with many smart washing machines, the best part of that is the Wash Assistant wizard which helps you select the right programme for your load. First it asks you to select the kind of items which you’ve got inside and the list is utterly exhausted. Woollens, jeans, blouses, jackets, bathrobes, table cloths, pillows, duvets, shower curtains, trainers — only the Hoover AXI system offers more with the likes of ski gear. Then you pick what colours you’ve got, how robust and how dirty they are and, hey presto, up pops a choice of a few programmes.

Not only does it tell you the temperature and spin speed — both of which you can customise — but it also tells you the finish time and allows you to delay the start up to 24 hours. Plus, you get a reading of how much water each cycle uses and how much energy it consumes too which is perfect for those both environment and wallet-conscious. There’s also an update of how much detergent you have left in the TwinDos tanks. 

There’s little beyond in terms of smart functionality but it’s enough to be useful and, more importantly, it all works reliably.

Miele W1 washing machine performance

Our Miele WCR 860 WPS was, frankly, breathtaking for performance. It removed every fresh stain we couldn throw and it even turned an embarrassingly yellowed mattress protector whiter than it’s been for years.

Miele’s CapDosing system offers an extra boost for more ground in issues. They’re small detergent packs which you can add into the drawer before each cycle. They come in flavours like DownCare, SportCare, WoollenCare, CottonCare and more, and they’re designed as both special detergents and softeners depending on your fabrics and needs. They’re a bit like using home coffee machine pods and they cost about a pound each time you use one. While they’re definitely handy for the odd situation, we certainly wouldn’t recommend you use them for every wash.

There are 24 programmes to choose from with plenty of options for delicates, sportswear and down-filled items. Our stock choices were mostly Cottons or Minimum Iron and these performed admirably no matter the temperature we set them to.

You can pimp out any of the 24 programmes with a long list of extras from the Options menu in the app with settings like Eco, Rinse Plus, Intensive etc. You could spend months getting to know it all.

There was no steam function in our model — this is available in the SteamCare models — but the non-iron option did a brilliant job on the kids’ school shirts on their own.

The quickest wash available is the 3.5kg Express 20 and we really like the QuickPowerWash cycle for when we were in a real hurry. It allows you to do a full load of laundry in under an hour. The energy rating drops to an A for that cycle, so you do pay for the privilege but it’s excellent if you’re in a pinch. Thankfully, the rest of the time, Miele claims its PowerWash 2.0 system is 40 per cent more efficient than even A+++ requirements.

Whatever you choose to do with this machine, it’s very easy to forget it’s there. It’s absurdly quiet with just a few quiet swishes every now and then. While it may be quiet, though, that top spin speed is seriously powerful. If you don’t have the Miele W1 well fitted between other units, it will shift its way across the floor.

Our verdict

You get what you pay for with the Miele W1 and, if you can pay for one, you should most definitely should.

These are the best performing smart washers we’ve tested. They cost a lot compared to the Samsungs and LGs of this world but Miele’s cleaning is incredible and their eco-credentials might just help make some of your pennies back if you do your washing wisely.

How does it rate online?

Taking the Miele WCR860 WPS specifically, there is a smattering of reviews around the web on sites such as Amazon.de and Idealo but mostly on Miela’s site itself. It’s very much a five-star affair with reviewers praising its quality touchscreen, its ease of use, its great array of programmes and the efficiency of the TwinDos system. The only negatives were from customers who had received models with faulty software.

How does it rate against similar washing machines?

Miele is very much a high-end brand across kitchen appliances. It only has LG, Siemens and the odd top of the range Bosch or AEG washer to compare with. There’s plenty of quality from this competition but none of them attack the space with the same focus and number of models as Miele. You can be confident that if you’re buying Miele, you’re buying a product for life.

The Grundig GWN washing machines are the German manufacturer’s current crop of domestic laundry specialists. They occupy a solid midrange band running from £349 up to £799 for the top spec model and they’re going down an absolute storm with consumers in the UK and Europe.

We were lucky enough to get the top-end Grundig GWN59650CHB into our utility room and serve it up a never-ending flow of family laundry over the course of a few months. Like all the washers in the range, the super silent and economic Grundig inverter motor sits at its core. They all also feature automatic load sensing, which cuts down water consumption, as well as Grundig’s gentle wave wash system which is less abrasive on your clothing.

Naturally, the Grundig GWN59650CHB has a few little handy optional extras too — not least of which is the fact that it’s Wi-Fi and app-enabled — but even if you don’t want to shell out the full amount, it’s worth knowing which technologies to look out for in the rest of the range.

Grundig GWN washing machine design

With a brushed chrome trim and an extra large porthole door to show off their gleaming, diamond-cut drum, the Grundig GWN series are a very classy range of washers. They ooze a high-tech chic with a lovely, clear LCD panel strip and a front and centre programme selector wheel that looks and feels like the volume knob on a ghetto blaster

Very clearly labelled touch sensitive controls allow you to tweak each programme and it’s got some very friendly bleeps and chirps each time you touch them. You can also control the Grundig GWN59650CHB with a smartphone app, if your prefer, but this machine is not all about flashy looks and whizzy functions. The inverter motor and ProDosing technology are dead handy for keeping your spins nice and quiet and making sure you never use more detergent and softener than you need.

Our model came with a sizeable 9kg drum, which can cope with up to 45 shirts in one go or a king size duvet, and felt big enough for a family of four, but 10kg, 8kg and 7kg models are also available in the Grundig GWN range.

Grundig GWN installation

Plumbing in a washer is not as difficult as it’s made out to be. If your retailer hasn’t included installation, then there’s no need to go spending on a professional and their costly call out fee. The ribbed waste pipe just hangs loose into an opened up u-bend and the water hose connects to a copper water feed pipe with a little white tap on it. If you’re not sure what you’re looking for, then a quick glance at YouTube will see you right.

The harder part is often shifting the machine into the right place to begin with. Ideally, you’ll need another pair of hands. To save on the heavy lifting and to protect your nice kitchen flooring, get some sticky felt pads from online or a hardware shop. Put one on each of the washer’s feet and then you can just slide the machine into position.

Once installed, download the HomeWhiz app for either iOS or Android. You’ll need to set up a user account but it’s free and quick to do. Then it’s a case of adding your device by entering the product ID which you’ll find on the label by the door. The app guides you through it all.

You’ll need to make sure that your machine is within range of your home Wi-Fi network if you want to use the smart features and app. If it’s not, then you can add a Wi-Fi extender such as those made by Devolo and TP-Link.

Given how slick this washing machine is, we’re surprised that Grundig hasn't been a little more adventurous with the smart home features of its GWN machines. The app is definitely good — it’s easy to use, clear and it helps you choose the right program — but there’s not an awful lot beyond.

The only obvious money saving that it can offer is that, if you use an Economy 7 electrical meter, you can set the washer to work only during hours where your electricity is cheaper. 

Instead the app is more tailored to helping you get better results from your wash, and that’s certainly no bad thing. It does this with the ‘Wizard’ section of the app which is a three-step questionnaire where you select laundry type, what colour it is, how heavily soiled and then it’ll give you the choice of three different programmes you can use, indicating which one it feels is best.

It certainly works and we were pleased to see that the results always included both the most intensive and the most energy efficient possibilities but compared to the same function on the Hoover AXI machines, the selection of laundry types is limited. There are the usual woolens, cottons, etc, and we were pleased to see curtains, bedding and jeans all represented but where are the likes of jackets, shoes and ski wear and all the other wonderful possibilities we saw in the Hoover AXI app system?

To do Grundig its dues, however, HomeWhiz is far more reliable than the Hoover Wizard app but we do hope to see some more intelligent and interesting features in the future. Hoover’s integration with weather forecasting, to make sure it’s not raining when it’s time to put your clothes on the line, is the kind of direction we’re thinking.

Grundig GWN performance

Yes, it could be a little smarter but, wow, we are so impressed by the performance of this machine.

The Grundig GWN series keeps it pretty simple. There are just 14 wash programmes to choose from. You can tweak the spin speed, the temperature and add an extra rinse but, largely, what you see is what you get, but none of that matters because it’s the core functions that are so impressive.

Look out for the machines in this range which feature ProDose and MultiSense technology. These are the big wins. The liquid detergent and conditioner reservoirs can store enough of each to last about 20 washes before you need to refill them. Just tank them up once a month and keep going until they tell you to add more. ProDose then ensures that the machine adds just the right amount of each according to the programme you’ve selected.. That way, you’re never adding too little to get everything clean and soft, nor wasting any by chucking in so much that it just ends up down the waste pipe.

Using the MultiSense programme takes things to the next level. MultiSense weighs your load, detects the fabric types and the dirt level as it fills and turns, and then adds an even more carefully measured ProDrose amount according to precisely what you’ve put in there. We got fantastic results here and used Multisense whenever we didn’t have anything more specialised to wash.

Just as impressive as all of this is the spinning skills of these machines. Not only does the inverter motor keep things nice and quiet but it’s very, very effective. Combined with the diamond-cut drum, we found our laundry came out not a long way off dry. If you still find it too noisy, then there is a silent mode but your garments will come out considerably soggier. 

There are two quickwash programmes. One is an excellent 40-minute, full load wash and the other a 14-minute run for a targeted 2kg collection of items, which is very handy but doesn’t have such a comprehensive spin. There are a good selection of delicate wash cycles including a hand wash option which didn’t ruin woolly jumpers. There’s also an Allergy UK certified Anti-Allergy wash and a steam cycle which meant we didn’t have iron the kids’ school shirts. Huzzah!

Other features worth noting include a child lock, an up to 24-hour start delay, a Machine Care cycle to keep your Grundig from getting grimey and a very handy 5-year guarantee.

 How does it rate online?

Scan the internet and all you’ll find for these machines are ratings between four and five stars. The main Grundig GWN washing machine page features over 600 such reviews for the eight devices in the range. Head over to Currys and you’ll see very much the same with particular praise all round for their super quiet running, the great smelling results and a good choice of programmes. Some have said that the machine has longer than usual programmes but there’s no real consistent complaints. 

How does it rate against similar washing machines?

Grundig occupies an excellent niche with its GWN washing machines. In terms of style and  function, they are a class ahead of the likes of Hoover, Candy and Beko. Instead, they’re more in competition with the increasingly popular Samsung and LG machines. The difference is that Grundig gives you more of the top money-saving and performance features without having to pay so much of a premium for the top-end models.

Best features?
It’s a smart machine, so you can turn it on from wherever you are with the app. That’s washing done ready for when you get home. It also recognizes and targets specific stains like red wine and oil, so you don’t have to worry about pre-washing and special detergents. The LED display makes selecting the right program easy, and will let you keep track of wash progress.

The verdicts
We think this is the best smart washing machine around right now. There’s a great selection of programs to keep clothes looking new for longer, and to sort other tasks like washing curtains. We also like the fact that there’s a Drum Clean program with a reminder to take care of the inside of your machine.

On the Bosch site, this machine gets an admirable 4.9 out of five stars with the range of functions, noise and washing results scoring highest. Users found it easy to use, especially with the app. They found the machine quiet and liked the large capacity. 

Buyers of this model via AO.com were equally pleased with the same 4.9 out of five stars overall. Customers appreciated the possibility to run a program of just 15 minutes, and the selection of cycles available. The light inside the drum that prevents stray socks being left inside was also applauded.

The Bosch WAW28750GB freestanding washing machine is an energy-efficient appliance that's really worth considering. 

Best features?
An ActiveOxygen function on this machine can be activated with most of the low temperature wash programs to remove bacteria even when you’re washing at 20°C. Also handy is the reload option, which lets you add in the bit of clothing you mistakenly left in the washing basket (although you can’t do this when the water level is too high, or the suds temperature greater than 50°C). You can also choose to save time on a cycle if you’re in a hurry, or favor maximum energy efficiency.

The verdicts
We reckon this machine is a great option if you have baby clothes to wash, a lot of sportswear to clean, or a wardrobe full of clothes with labels that demand washes at low temperatures, as you can still be sure that they’re thoroughly clean. There’s a great range of washes, a big drum, and a child lock, so it’s a top choice for a busy family home. 

Bosch customers are happy with their selection of this model, awarding it five stars out of five, and giving both its range of functions and washing results a perfect score. Highlights for these buyers? The fact that the washing machine is intuitive to use, the savings on energy and water compared to a previous machine, and its performance on woollens and whites.

This model scores an almost perfect 9.6 out of 10 on the Currys site. Noise (we’re assuming the lack of, really), and build quality got the highest marks from these reviewers. Customers were fans of the visual display, liked the results with the ActiveOxygen button (see above), and appreciated its versatility.

On a tight budget? The Bosch WAN24108GB freestanding washing machine is a good bet at a great price.

Best features?
After 20 cycles at under 40C, this model will prompt you to use the DrumClean program to keep the interior of the machine clear of residues, limescale and more. An anti-vibration design will damp the noise down, especially when the machine’s spinning. Like other Bosch machines, this washer offers the reload feature that allows you to add in the item of clothing you spotted as soon as you pressed start.

The verdict
Pay top dollar and you’ll get a smart washing machine, higher spin speed, and less noise – but none of that is to say that you won’t get a washer that’s easy to use, efficient, and not noisy if you choose to spend less. In fact, we reckon if you want to limit your spend, you’ll be more than satisfied with this machine’s performance.

Buyers on the Bosch site were certainly happy with their choice with a solid 4.6 out of five the average verdict for this model. The users pronounced the washer as quiet, and able to get good results on all sorts of loads. They also found it easy to operate.

Those who’d shopped at John Lewis for this Bosch washing machine were also pleased, with four out of five the overall score here. There was agreement that this model was quiet, and that the washing results were good.

Great usability makes the Bosch WAT286H0GB freestanding washing machine a real winner for us. Here's what you need to know about this choice – one of the best Bosch washing machines around.

Best features?
This machine can do a lot of the thinking for you. It has automatic dosing for liquid detergent, which it adjusts according to how much you’re washing, fabric type and how dirty it is. The benefit? You don’t need to measure out capfuls or guesstimate, and the detergent residues of too much laundry liquid or the poor results of too little should be avoided. There’s also an auto function that adjusts water temperature and speed according to load weight, fabric and dirtiness. You can connect this machine via an app on tablet or smartphone, too.

The verdicts
Our opinion? This machine is big on useful features at a price many will think is well worth it. The large drum can cope with the loads a family will throw at it, and it’s pretty quiet, too, so it shouldn’t disturb your household even if you have to get a wash on before everyone’s up. The control dial won’t make choosing a wash complicated, either.

The scores from those who parted with their hard-earned pounds for this machine on the Bosch website? It’s a satisfied 4.6 out of five overall. Super-quiet spinning and automatic dosing were picked out as top features, as was the connectivity via the app.

Those who bought on Appliances Direct gave a combined 9.2 out of 10 with features, build quality and noise most highly rated of its attributes. Purchasers commented on the benefits of connecting it to a phone, its detergent economy, and how easy it was to select and also modify programs as desired. Beyond the wrapping, moreover, is a model with the capacity and features families need, plus welcome energy efficiency, and all that at a good price point. Being able to speed up washes when necessary also gets a big thumbs-up from us. 

Those who bought on the Bosch site awarded an overall 4.6 out of five for this model. Operating noise and washing results received the best scores. Reviewers praised the feedback on maximum wash weight via the display panel, the lack of noise and the machine’s efficiency.

On AO.com, it’s an even more convinced 4.8 out of five from purchasers. The flexibility of the program, a drum that was up to the needs of a family of five, and the stylish finish were among the factors users liked about this machine.

While non-smart washing machines are loaded with plenty of clever features, the smart washing machines we’re talking about here are the ones that can specifically connect to your home's Wi-Fi in order to enjoy certain features. These can:

What smart washing machine features do you need?

Are smart washing machines a real bonus for the extra cost or can you do without their smart features? Read on to find out.

1. Remote control

If you’ve ever put a load into the washing machine but not wanted to set it going there and then, a smart washing machine has you covered. 

Perhaps you’re going out, want the washing done for when you return but don’t want a load of wet washing hanging around inside the drum for too long – you can check in with your washer via the companion app and set it going at a time that suits you best, as well as select the mode and any special features.

You can also pause a current wash, if you’ve got delayed somewhere and want to put it on hold.

Do I need it?

There are a handful of times when the ability to start or pause a cycle from afar would be useful, but most of the time you’re going to load your washing and set the washing machine going straight away – even if you’re going out, a few hours sitting in a well-maintained drum won’t be a huge problem. 

Now, if we can get a washing machine that autonomously sorts a load, loads it and then sets a cycle going, that’s something we can get on board with…

2. Monitor your washing

Ever wondered if your partner put the washing on like they promised? With a smart washing machine you can find out by checking in on your wash, via your smartphone, to see how long is left and an estimated finish time. You can also receive a notification when the wash load has finished, or when your auto-dose detergent is running low.

Aside from catching a lazy family member out, this could also be handy for knowing when you need to be home to get a wash load out, or for planning your day after a wash load has finished.

Do I need it?

You know that saying about watching paint dry…? Watching a washing cycle isn’t much better. And there’s really very little use for it, when you really think about it. 

If you’re a busy household with lots of wash loads going on, it can be handy to know how long one has got left before you can put another one on, but popping downstairs to have a look at the display will give you that information. 

We can’t see a whole lot of use for checking it from outside of the house though, unless you plan your days by wash loads, which let’s be honest, very few of us do.

The auto-dose and wash finish reminders might be helpful for the forgetful among us, but you’ll usually get a notification from the washing machine itself when in the house – either a beep or a light. And if you’re not in the house, you’ll probably forget by the time you get home anyway…

3. Adding it to your smart home

Several washing machine manufacturers now offer Alexa and/or Google Assistant compatibility, which will allow you to use a compatible device (like an Amazon Echo or Google Home Mini) to control your washing machine using your voice (rather than having a smart assistant built into the machine itself, currently). This includes washers from Samsung, LG, Bosch, Hoover and Whirlpool, among others.

Having smart home connectivity also means you can factor it into a smart home 'routine', which allows you trigger a whole host of actions with one verbal command. For example, giving your smart assistant the command 'good night' could lock the doors, turn off the lights, lower the thermostat and switch a wash load on. Futuristic or what?

Do I need it?

While it’s fun to control appliances with your voice, the fact remains that you still need to load the washer yourself and add the detergent – so it seems sensible, and indeed more likely, that you would just set it going there and then. 

The same goes for factoring it into any smart home routine. Unless you particularly want a wash load to run as part of a string of events as you’re going to bed or waking up (not forgetting it still needs to be filled and ready to go), it may not end up being particularly practical – as futuristic as it might seem the first couple of times you do it.

4. Fixing your washing machine

If you’ve ever called a plumber out at an extortionate fee to discover it was something you really could’ve done yourself, a smart washing machine could save you time and cash.

When something goes wrong, the companion app for your washer may be able to help you to self-diagnose the issue (or equally, let you know when to leave it to the professionals). Most have troubleshooting tips built into the app, and some can even walk you through a fix step by step. 

Do I need it? 

Being notified of an issue, such as a blocked filter, before it gets any worse is a pretty handy feature, as are the troubleshooting tips to help you rectify the issue yourself.

That said, most washing machines come with a physical or digital manual, which will likely offer similar guidance, and a quick Google of any error codes will usually point you in the right direction of a fix.

Should I buy a smart washing machine?

While you’ll notice that the extra features a smart washing machine offers aren’t likely to offer much in the way of real benefits to your life, smart features are being introduced lower and lower down in ranges now, and come in at very little extra cost. So even if you’re looking at an entry level washer, you might not be able to avoid it.

For example, Samsung includes some smart functionality in their washing machines from the Samsung ecobubble WW70J5555FX at £379, all the way up to their £1,219 Samsung QuickDrive + AddWash WW10M86DQOO, which comes with every smart bell and whistle going. Other manufacturers are doing the same, so it’s worth checking what smart functionality is included if it is important to you.

If you don’t have to pay a premium to get the extra features, you might find them useful every once in a while, but at this stage, we wouldn’t recommend going looking for them as a must-have on your shopping list. Instead, we’d recommend looking at more traditional features first, which you might find more useful – quick cycles and programmes for specific fabric types, not to mention the size of the drum and spin speeds. Capacity & efficiency

A massive 12kg washing machine, this LG Steam FH4G1BCS2 should do the job for the largest of families and of course comes with the most efficient A+++ energy rating for peace of mind.

Speed & noise level

This machine will spin your clothes at 1400 rpm, with a noise level of 71dB on a spin and 52dB during a wash – a pretty average noise level, all things considered.

Features

This washer features LG’s Turbowash, which sprays jets of water onto your clothes for easier rinsing and faster wash times of as little as 49 minutes, and LG’s TrueSteam technology, which is great for allergy sufferers and those with sensitive skin. There’s also a function called 'Pause & Add Items', which will release the door within three seconds, so you can add to the wash through the main door. Odd sock on the floor, sorted.

With a 9kg drum, the Serie 8 WAW285H0GB from Bosch should do the job for most medium-sized households, and its A+++ energy rating means it should do its bit to keeping the household bills down too.

Speed & noise level

It offers a 1400 rpm spin, and a noise level of 71dB when at its loudest. That’s relatively quiet at this price. 

Features

There are 11 washing programmes to choose from and features that include an Auto Stain remover, which targets 16 of the most stubborn household stains, adjusting the temperature and drum movement for the best results. 

From a smart perspective, the Serie 8 washer uses the Bosch Home Connect app, allowing you to control and monitor your washing machine from your smartphone, as well as get push notifications on its progress.

3. Samsung QuickDrive WW90M645OPO

Capacity & efficiency

Samsung does some pretty huge drums for the largest families, but 9kg is likely to be enough for most, and this Samsung QuickDrive WW90M645OPO comes with an A+++ rating for keeping energy costs as low as possible. 

Speed & noise level

It spins at 1400 rpm, with a maximum noise level of 73dB. That is about the same level as a vacuum cleaner on max power, but it runs much quieter (49dB) while washing. 

Features

This washing machine features Samsung’s QuickDrive technology, which claims to reduce washing time by up to 50 per cent, plus it comes with its AddWash feature, allowing you to add items to the wash through a small door in the drum once the wash has started. Handy.

Smart controls here allow you to control your wash from your smartphone, as well as identify any issues and troubleshoot them from your phone.

4. Hoover AXI AWMPD610LH8R

Capacity & efficiency

This mid-range Hoover AXI AWMPD610LH8R is a great choice for larger families on a budget, with a 10kg drum and that all important A+++ energy rating.

Speed & noise level

It’ll also get to a maximum spin speed of 1600 rpm so your washing shouldn’t take too long to dry once you’ve unloaded it. It means the noise level is a bit higher at its loudest, at 80dB, but its wash level is average at 51dB.

Features

There are a couple of clever features in this reasonably priced washing machine, including an auto-dose system, which will automatically dispense the right amount of detergent for your wash, and Hoover’s Total Care programme, which allows you to mix different fabrics and colours and whites in one wash. 

As an AXI machine, it’s one of Hoover’s smartest washing machines, and includes features that let you to monitor the wash from your phone and will even suggest a good time to start a wash based on the weather. You can also use the Hoover Talks app to control your washing machine by voice or ask for advice on the best programme to use for your load, plus it is compatible with both Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.

How to buy the best top loading washing machine

Wondering how to repair a washing machine that's not working as well as it once did? Laundry comes out badly washed, smelling musty or a different size or colour? It's easy to blame the machine, we know, but the problem could actually be how you are using it. 

Did you know, for example, that there's an actual technique to checking you've loaded the right amount of clothing into your washing machine? Or that using too much detergent can make your washing smell worse, not better? Nope, us neither. So, we've delved into the reasons why your washing machine does a bad job, and come up with the advice below. Bye bye musty stains, hello gleaming whites.

You're washing machine is doing a bad job because...

How many will you score out of 10 on the your fault/its fault test?

1. You're not loading the washing machine properly

Yup, there's actually a proper way to do this, and it mostly involves checking you haven't overloaded the washing machine. If you do, you'll end up with dirty clothing at the end of your wash. What's more, overloading will leave detergent deposits on your clothes and in the bottom of the drum because the water won't be able to reach it to dissolve it, the appliance won't spin well, and overloading will eventually damage your washing machine. 

So, here's how to check you've got it right. Place your dirty laundry into the drum, then slide your hand on to the top of the wash load. If you can easily fit your hand between the top of the washing and the top of the drum (or the door if it's a top-loader), the machine isn't overloaded. If you can't, it is and you'll need to take some items out. Ideally, your washing machine should only ever be three quarters full.

2. You're not being selective enough with what to you wash 

We get that it's easy to just shove everything into the washing machine without really checking what you are putting in, but that does mean stuff that shouldn't go in the washing machine can slip through. Belts, keys, coins, all of these can be really damaging to your appliance, not to mention the clothes you are washing them with. Even underwired bras can cause damage (if the wire dislodges and works its way through the drum you might as well give up and get a new machine), so either hand wash them or invest in a special washing bag for your bra. Your underwear and your washing machine (and wallet) will thank you. 

3. You’re not getting the washing detergent dose right

Why aim to get the dose right? It'll mean your clothes come out fresher, with no detergent stains and no musty smell. How to? Easy. Start by checking the instructions on your detergent’s packaging – there should be some indication there about how much to use for each wash load type. Next, bear in mind that the amount of detergent you'll need is determined by various factors: for example, you'll need more if your clothes are really dirty or stained, if the washing machine is fuller rather than half empty, or if you live in an area that has hard water. 

Can you ever have too much washing powder? Yup, and if you do, you'll create a drum full of foam that won't rinse out – or, if you've got a good quality modern washing machine that has a sensor to monitor soap levels, it'll add on extra rinses until the wash is sud-free. Environmentally friendly? Not very...

Too much detergent foam can also stop the washing machine from emptying properly. Plus, too much foam stops clothes rubbing together, which is one of the actions your washing machine uses to wash your clothes.

The solution if you're faced with a foamy wash RIGHT NOW? Add a cap full of fabric conditioner in time for the next rinse cycle.

4. You're not using the right amount of fabric conditioner

Sounds like a small thing, right? But if you don't add the right amount of fabric conditioner to the drawer it will either a) have no effect at all if there's not enough or b) not dispense at all if it's over-full. 

5. You’re choosing the wrong wash cycle

If you're anything like the Realhomes.com team (quick survey done), you stick to just one or two programmes for all your washing and rarely venture to choose other cycles that might be more suitable for your laundry. 

So, it might be time to revisit the manual or, if you've lost it (guilty), look up your washing machine's functions online. It'll only take five minutes and it could transform how well your washing machine does your laundry. 

For example, put a brightly coloured, synthetic T-shirt on a cycle for cottons and you'll notice it begins to fade after a few washes. Or pick that eco setting for heavily stained clothing and you may find that the low temperature doesn't do the job. Or pick a cotton setting for hand wash items and you'll find them stretched or ripped. Combine this with the wrong detergent dose and you're looking at a #laundryfail.

You can use the items' care labels to find out which cycle to pick, but if in doubt – or you've removed the label – here's a quick guide to picking the right cycle (note: temperatures are tackled next): 

Cottons need a high agitation wash and a high-speed spin; both these functions clean cottons well but won't suit more delicate fabrics.

Delicates (whether woolly jumpers, silk blouses or lacy underwear) need a low agitation wash and a lower speed spin.

Handwash items (clothes marked ‘handwash only’) need a low agitation wash and a low speed spin.

Quick wash (we all use this one most, right?) has a high spin speed, so it really is just for lightly soiled clothes but not delicate or handwash only.  

Synthetics need a medium agitation wash and, ideally, a low speed spin.

6. You're choosing the wrong wash temperature

First port of call: fabric care labels to check the preferred temperature setting. Got a mixed load (that'll be every single time you do a wash load, we know)? Choose the lowest temperature of all the items and set it at that. Bear in mind that modern washing machines and detergents can perform really well at lower (even cold) temperatures. 

Label offering a range of temperatures? Use these temperature settings as a guide, assuming the fabric can take it; otherwise wash at a cooler temperature to be more environmentally-friendly:

Hot wash (60°C and above) will tackle tough stains or bacteria-laden items (think pillowcases someone with a cold has laid their head upon, tea towels, the dog's favourite blanket).  

Warm wash (40°C) is ideal for items that touch your body directly: think underwear, T-shirts, leggings and the like. 

Cold wash (15-30°C) can be used for lightly soiled and brightly coloured items. 

7. You’re choosing the wrong spin cycle

As we said above, generally delicates need a slower spin cycle, synthetics can take a medium spin speed, and cottons and the like can cope with a faster cycle. However, it's worth bearing in mind (if you can customise  your wash cycle) that: 

Faster spin cycles mean more agitation which means better stain removal and fabric cleaning. However, your fabrics might suffer. 

Lower spin cycles mean less agitation, which is better for your fabrics. However, you might find that stain removal and cleaning are disappointing. 

8. You’re not emptying the washing machine quickly enough

It's all very well putting a wash on and going off to work or – if you're like us – forgetting that you ever put the wash on in the first place and discovering it the next morning. But if you don't empty your wash load quickly (and we mean within a couple of hours of the programme ending), you'll find that you need to work harder at the ironing and the washing won't smell as fresh as that emptied quickly.

9. Your detergent tray has a build up

If you're a washing powder user, you might notice lumps of detergent building up in the detergent tray. And if there are visible lumps, there are almost certainly more further down the line, between the tray and the drum. All of which means your detergent's blocked from reaching your wash. 

The solution? Use less detergent and clean the tray regularly – just removing it and standing it in hot water for a while before giving it a quick scrub with an old toothbrush, drying and replacing it will solve the problem. More on cleaning a washing machine below. 

Or, if that seems like a job you could do without, put the detergent into the drum directly on top of your clothes. We think liquid detergent or capsules will make a better job of this than powder.

10. Your washing machine is dirty 

Hardly surprising is it? Your washing machine not only has to cope with dirty clothing, bedding, towels, dog beds and, occasionally, shoes, it's also a damp, warm place that's perfect for breeding bacteria. 

Cleaning a washing machine is really simple (use our guide to find out how), but it's worthwhile knowing that some washing machine warranties will be invalidated if you use a washing machine cleaner or descaling product, so check the manual first. We tend to favour using white vinegar and putting the empty machine on a hot wash; wiping rubber seals and crevices is a must, too.

11. You're not letting your washing machine air

Just to keep things as clean and hygienic as possible, it's a good idea to leave your washing machine door open slightly after each wash. This will allow any moisture to escape and prevent the build up of the previously mentioned breeding bacteria and the smells that go with them. Wipe down the inside of the door and the rim after every wash too, to get rid of any water droplets. 

12. Washing machine not draining? There could be a blockage

If your washing machine isn't draining excess water it could be because there is a blockage or the pump is broken. You can check which one looks more likely by listening to your washing machine throughout the cycle, if you can hear that the pump is running but the water isn't draining then it's a blockage; if you can't hear the pump at all that more likely than not, it's broken.

You can usually clear a washing machine blockage yourself. First turn off the washing machine at the plug, and lay down some towels as it will probably leak. Next, check the pump filter, which is usually situated at the bottom of the machine and clear it of any debris.

Then, inspect the drain hose. Typically attached to the U-bend under the sink, the drain hose will be connected via a spigot. Unscrew the spigot and empty any excess water from the hose into a bucket or sink. Look in the hose and the U-bend for blockages and remove anything hiding in there.

This Hoover AXI review takes a look at Hoover’s first range of smart washing machines. Specifically, it was the Hoover AXI AWMPD610LH8R washing machine which we thoroughly tested, but the built-in Wi-Fi, app controls and features described here are the same across the range.

We tested the AXI along with a series of the best smart washing machines from other manufacturers. Each went through cycle upon cycle of our test family’s clothing over a period of weeks. We took them from quick wash to boil, from whites to woolens, all the way up to 1600rpm and back again, until we’d formed our opinions on their performance.

Hoover AXI design and functionality

The Hoover AXI is definitely at the budget end of smart washing machines and it really looks it, too. The finish is a plastic that gives a little too much to the touch, and the soft touch/touch sensitive buttons are not easy to press. There are also so many different wash options that you need a PhD in hieroglyphics to tell what you’ve selected on the fairly rudimentary screen.

Thankfully, the app makes up for some of these short-comings and whatever the AXI may lack in style it certainly delivers in functionality, performance and value for money. Its 10kg drum is a very decent size for a family and there are settings to wash just about anything you’ll find in your household.

How does the Hoover AXI perform?

It may not be the best washer for usability but its bang on with the laundry results. With all those different variations on each cycle and so many special care washes, there’s very much a programme for all occasions. The headline 14-minute quick wash is a bit of a cheat because it can only manage a 1.5kg wash. Fortunately, you can up that to 30 mins for a quarter load, 44 mins for a third of a load and 59 minutes will quick wash the full 10kg capacity, so long as it’s only lightly soiled.

We managed to get through a fair bit of laundry with just the four of those quick washes when the kids needed clean sports kits or to get through the last few emergency washes before our summer holiday, and the results never disappointed. Clothes always came out clean, fresh smelling and never utterly sodden; a proper time-saving performance.

Of course, with the luxury of time (when does that happen again?) it’s important to save the planet and a few pennies and the Eco 20 mode is particularly good here. It’s a two-hour, full-load programme where you can mix whatever fabrics you like. For us it was a very decent blend of time and money-saving.

For those who need higher temperature programmes, then the Hygiene 60 and Baby 60 are ready for the heavy artillery, and you can always add steam for a little sterilising boost.

If you’re not sure of the environmental impact of your programme choice, then the app is a brilliant place to get an idea of how eco-conscious each of the cycles is. There’s a five leaf (not star) system. The more leaves, the greener the programme, and it definitely helps when it comes to making an informed choice about your wash. It’s all very well that the labelling says the machine is A+++ rated but, if you’re washing at 90 degrees every time, then you’re still not doing much either for your pocket or the planet.

Hoover AXI app and smart control

The soft touch buttons on the machine itself can be a tad unresponsive. For that reason alone we prefer using the app to choose the programmes and start the cycles but there are still plenty of other benefits. You need to press the Wi-Fi button on the machine every time you want to connect with the app, which is a touch annoying, but, once the wash is underway, you can get progress updates whether you’re at home or away.

The AXI offers 13 main wash programmes but it works out more like 40 given that you can customise each of those by changing the temperature, spin speed, dirt levels, steam, the number of rinses, hygiene levels and many more. The app lists the standard cycles and then you change those options as you see fit. What we really like, though, is that you don’t necessarily have to know your EcoSmart from your Hygiene 60.

If the names don’t make sense to you, or if you have something specific to wash, then the Hoover Wizard app has a list of certain pre-customised combinations to give what it calls Special Care and Home Care cycles. These include curtains, duvets, tablecloths, down jackets, cashmere, denim, diving suits (!) and more, plus the all-important baby sanitiser and cuddly toy modes.

The app is also handy for keeping tabs on the life of your machine. It gathers statistics on your washes about how many cycles it has performed, which type and will even suggest when it needs to perform maintenance cycles. It’s even connected to your local weather service and will warn you if the wash you’re about to put on is going to coincide with the kind of weather that won’t do much for drying your laundry on the line. Believe us, that can save plenty of time and effort and avoid dreaded rewashes.

There's also the space to talk to the Hoover Talks chatbot but it’s not very helpful. Don’t waste your time there. In fact, there is a general issue with all this clever smart control and information. The app, and the connection between your phone and the washer can be a bit buggy. It’s particularly intermittent on Android but even with iPhone the machine can take a few tries and a bit of turning on and off again before it realises that you’re trying to tell it something. It’s a guaranteed source of frustration if you’re not particularly techie.

Hoover AXI installation

It’s always worth getting your retailer to install your washer if it’s free, but a self-install is an easy way to save a few pennies if not. Like most washers these days, there are only two pipes and plug to worry about. So long as you can shift the AXI into place without scratching your flooring, and you can dispose of your old machine without a problem, then it really is a doddle.

Once plumbed, download the Hoover Wizard app for either iOS or Android. The set-up process to register your AXI machine inside the app is simple enough. You register your details for a free account, enter the machine’s 16-digit number (found inside the door) and then add your home Wi-Fi password when prompted. The app leads you through the process.

The only trouble you might have — and we certainly had it initially — is that your AXI needs to be in good reach of your home Wi-Fi signal. Anything less than two bars of Wi-Fi reception on your mobile and you’ll find the smart controls become patchy. If this is the case, you’ll either need to move your router closer or buy a Wi-Fi extender of some sort.

HOW DOES THE HOOVER AXI RATE ONLINE?

There are no reviews on the Hoover site but the bulk of the feedback is on Argos and AO.com where there a total of 44 reviews. The machine scores mostly five stars with a large amount of fours. Customer generally praise the machine's washing results and high drum capacity. Its auto-dosing system also wins plaudits. Quite rightly, even some of these positive scores comment on the app’s patchy performance and the few who have totally panned the machine seem to level criticism at the same connected features.

HOW DOES THE HOOVER AXI RATE AGAINST SIMILAR WASHING MACHINES?

There are cheaper smart washing machines out there but they’re only made by Hoover or Candy, both of which belong to the same parent company. The smart experience across these brands and models is very similar, so it’s really only the washing performance that keeps this AXI ahead with its wealth and flexibility of programmes. If you can step up to the LGs, Samsungs, Mieles and Grundigs of this world, however, you’ll get far better connected consistency.

In news more pressing than anything we've covered of late, Kirstie Allsopp has revealed – somewhat controversially – that the washing machine does not belong in the kitchen. Mind. Blown.

So, 'where does it belong?' we hear you ask. Well, according to Allsopp (and a large percentage of Twitter followers), in the bathroom or a separate utility room, as is common throughout America and much of the rest of Europe. 

In fact, so divisive is this issue that Allsopp went as far as to describe keeping a washing machine in the kitchen as 'disgusting,' as seen in her post below.

But what are our thoughts on the matter? Well, we'd like to think we're a little more in touch with the realities of the average home. After all, having space in the bathroom to store your washing machine – or for a separate utility room – is a privilege that not many of us enjoy. 

That said, the washing machines we've come across in holiday-let bathrooms that purpose-built for the appliance seem pretty well placed. A chance for new build designers to rethink where this vital home appliance goes?
