Simply add a few drops of dish soap to the stained food container, add one folded paper towel, and fill it with hot water. 

Secure the lid back on the container, making sure it's secure so you don't end up with a soapy mess. Then shake it all up! 

The friction from the paper towel will help loosen those food particles, removing the stain. The agitation from the shaking will help grease and oil release from the plastic, being absorbed into the paper towel. 

For such a simple material, it sure gets the job done. Who knew washing dishes by hand could be this easy?

"The key thing to remember with this trend is that it is quirky and playful," she tells Real Homes. The recent BlendJet 2 recall in conjunction with the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has prompted many questions about blenders and kitchen safety. We'll help you determine if your model has been affected in this guide, and how to secure a replacement if your blender is a safety risk.

BlendJet 2 recall — what you need to know

On Thursday, December 28, 2023, BlendJet and the CPSC revealed BlendJet 2 Portable Blenders had been recalled. The small kitchen appliances in question have been found to be at risk of overheating or catching fire, potentially causing the metal blades to break off. 

Roughly 4.8 million products in the United States and 117,000 in Canada have been affected. This includes a variety of colors and styles of the BlendJet 2 sold across various retailers, including Costco, Target and Walmart. 

Which BlendJet 2 products are affected?

According to the CPSC, the blenders that have serial numbers beginning with four numbers between 5201 and 5542 are subject to the recall. This affects several colors and styles, so you'll want to scan your small kitchen cabinets and check your BlendJet 2 portable blender serial number.

You can also check if your product is one of those at risk by using the nifty "Is my BlendJet 2 Recalled?" tool on the brand's website. If you wish to speak to a representative about your product, the BlendJet toll-free number to dial is 844-334-0562, with lines open from 8am to 10pm ET, Monday through Friday .

BlendJet has revealed no BlendJet 2 Portable Blenders currently available for purchase on the brand's website, or across its retailers are affected by the recall, which includes the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Happy Viking, and the Disney Princess lines. Those purchased online or at Target, Walmart, and Costco from October 2020 through November 2023 are the ones involved in the voluntary recall.

What happened to those affected by the BlendJet 2 recall?

According to the CPSC, there have been 329 reports of the blades breaking while in use, 17 reports of overheating or fires resulting in property damage claims of roughly $150,000, 49 reports of minor burns, and one report of a laceration injury.

In a statement, BlendJet said, “While none of the reported incidents resulted in serious injury or significant property damage, out of an abundance of caution, our company updated the base of the BlendJet 2 to feature thicker blades and an improved electrical configuration. These updates were incorporated many months ago into all BlendJet 2 devices manufactured by the company."

How do you find your BlendJet 2 serial number?

According to the CPSC, you can find the serial numbers on the base of your blender, along with "Blendjet2" and "The Original Portable Blender."

What should you do if your BlendJet 2 is affected

Customers who have been affected by the recall will be able to request a replacement base for the BlendJet 2, which will be provided free of charge by the brand. If you've realized while decluttering your small kitchen that your products are potentially hazardous, stop using them immediately. 

To get your free replacement, remove and cut the rubber seal from the base of the recalled BlendJet 2 into three or more pieces and send a photo of the serial number and its rubber seal in pieces to BlendJet, the brand notes. But thankfully, this device now means I can live my best life, creating a dreamy, creamy, concoction any time I want from the comfort of my own kitchen. No waiting in line, and no paper spoons from drive-thrus making my hair stand on end. 

The icecream-loving kid inside me was screaming when Cuisinart asked if I wanted to review this ice cream maker. As an ice cream aficionado who books my vacation spots based on the quality of the Gelatarias nearby, this review was slated to be an easy-freezy breeze.

What I thought of the Cuisinart Soft Serve Ice Cream Maker

I recently read a book called Ultra Processed People by Chris Van Tulken (available on Amazon) and was shocked to find the expensive Gelatos I love to buy often has unnecessary nasties in the ingredients list (what's guar gum?). 

Since then, I've been on a quest to make my own frozen treats so when Cuisinart approached me to review this small kitchen appliance, just after I'd seen TV commercials promoting it, it felt very serendipitous.

While the preparation and churn process might take 20 minutes or so, you should manage your expectations on the four-hour freezing process, and the size of the machine and bowl. It is a big product for something quite novel and if you don't have a large freezer, you'll struggle to get past the first hurdle of freezing the bowl.

If you live in a household where dessert is mandatory and have been spending a few too many bucks on Ben & Jerry's, it's worth having this bit of kit in your arsenal. You'll be surprised how good the simple combination of milk, sugar, and cream tastes. 

If priority is your convenience, you can cut some of the prep by using a pre-made ice cream mix — the same stuff your neighborhood ice cream truck uses. The Junket bundle on Amazon contains two boxes of chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry for under $30, and is highly rated by customers.

My two biggest disappointments were not being able to use the ice cream bowl to store my finished product, and even in an airtight container I found the ice cream lost its soft consistency. If you want fluffy, whipped results, you won’t be able to make it in advance. It's usually why mass producers of ice cream add those unfamiliar ingredients: to retain that freshly-made texture.

Unboxing and setting up the Cuisinart Soft Serve Ice Cream Maker

Unboxing

On first impression, it's quite a large box but weighs just shy of 15 lbs. Upon opening, there were three pieces of styrofoam packaging molded around the product. Usually, this would annoy me, but it did protect the plastic machine from knocks and bumps in transit.

One thing I will say is Cuisinart may have gone a little overboard with the individually wrapped parts. I counted seven plastic bags, each with a suffocation warning, on a product marketed for kids to enjoy using, too.

Setup

As with any kitchen appliance fresh out of the box, you'll want to give it a clean. Cuisinart specifically instructs you not to use anything abrasive or hard.

However, you can't dump this in the sink for a rinse. I used a damp microfiber cloth and washed the lid, freezer bowl, mixing arm, topping containers, topping chute, and drip tray by hand, using a little dish soap, warm water, and my trusty Dishmatic washing up brush (you can grab these on Amazon). 

One of the downsides to this machine is needing to forward-plan by a day. In fact, the first ice cream making step is to freeze the bowl on a flat surface, in an upright position for at least 24 hours. Note, it might take a little longer if your refrigerator isn't that cold. Ideally, it should be around -0.4°F.

Cuisinart instructs you to wrap the large bowl in a plastic bag to prevent freezer burn, but that was the least of my problems. As an avid user of my small air fryer, I usually have a few convenience foods in my refrigerator, so fitting the bowl into it, became a game of fridge Tetris. 

Luckily, I have an average-sized appliance, but you might struggle if your drawers are small. You'll see here that I had to remove one entirely. If you do have the luxury of space, the brand advises that you leave the bowl in the freezer at all times. But I don't think this would be practical for most busy families.

Assembling the Soft Serve Ice Cream Maker

You can put the machine together in five relatively-simple steps. I timed myself and and it took me less than five minutes to complete the setup.

1. Remove the bowl from the freezer and place it into the main housing of the ice cream maker. Align the mixing paddle into the hole on the underside of the lid. Push it into place until it clicks and locks into place.
2. Slide the topping containers into the indent on the side of the ice cream maker. Place the lids over the top.
3. Attach the dispensing arm with the handle. Place it so that it sits right underneath the product, but at a 45-degree angle, to the front of the unit. Align the hole in the handle and turn clockwise towards you until it's in position.
4. Slide the toppings chute into the space provided underneath the toppings containers. Be sure to slide it all the way in until it stops.
5. Place the drip tray on the base, under the dispenser. Put the lid, with the mixing paddle, over the ice cream bowl and push down until it clicks securely into place.

Making ice cream

The Cuisinart Soft Serve Ice Cream & Slushy Maker comes with an eight-recipe booklet that includes instructions to make 0.8-0.9 liters of basic soft serve, plant-based ice creams, berry and peach sorbet, and dairy-free vanilla.

Preparation time ranges from five to 15 minutes, churning time around 20 minutes, and you'll need to chill your mix for a minimum of four hours. All is good and well for patient adults, but you might need to manage the kid's expectations.

Vanilla soft serve

Out of all of the recipes provided, this four-ingredient soft serve using regular whole milk, sugar, heavy cream, and vanilla extract seemed the easiest, so I started with this. I combined all the ingredients and chilled the mix for four hours (but you can leave it overnight).

Once the four hours were up, I added the frozen freezer bowl to the machine, turned it on, and poured in the chilled ingredients. The churning process took just under half an hour, though I set a timer on my phone for 15 minutes to check the consistency. It was still runny, even after 25 minutes, but just shy of the half-hour mark, it was ready.

And this is where the real magic happens, kids. Unlocking a core memory of attending many McDonald's birthday parties as a kid, I positioned my bowl and pulled the arm, releasing continuous thick ribbons of smooth soft serve vanilla. This can take some trial and error, so if it is a little viscous, just pop the mix back into the frozen bowl and be patient.

There is a cone holder that accepts flat-bottomed and pointed cones, but I always opt for a cup at my local scoop shop, so I used my La Redoute Gogain snack bowl. 

Rather than spooning toppings on, I used this as the perfect opportunity to try the toppings chute. Cuisinart warns that the knob may be hard to turn if the toppings are too sugary and it should not be left in the containers as moisture can get into them. I think the best thing to do in this instance is to anticipate how much you will use per session, and run it down in one go.

The brand recommends crushed M&Ms (available at Amazon), crushed chocolate chips, sprinkles, crushed nuts, or finely crushed cookies (I buy both Oreos and Biscoff in bulk from the Lotus Store at Amazon). Whole candy or chocolate is too big to dispense and may jam the machine, so don't put these in straight from the package.

When turning the knob, you'll need to place your bowl quite close to the chute. Otherwise, be prepared for flying toppings all over your worktop.

Berry sorbet

My husband calls me a fruit bat because of my love of fresh produce. So seeing as we had a few punnets of berries in the house, I decided to try a red fruit sorbet next. This involved making a sugar syrup mixed with blitzed berries, water, and a generous squeeze of lemon juice.

All in all, the extra legwork does mean boiling the kettle, using my handheld blender (and then cleaning the blender). But the resulting sherbert is refreshing and makes a great palette cleanser after dinner. Note that when it came to churning, the dairy-free mix took half the time of the cream-based recipe, and was less sweet using 30% less sugar.

Using the keep warm plate

I love a hot fudge sundae, but hated that until now, I'd have to drive to my local fast-food restaurant to get one. With this kitchen item, I can spoon warm caramel or chocolate onto my ice cream for that dreamy hot-cold sensation. I noticed, however, that Cuisinart kindly instructs you not to use it to melt chocolate or warm up sauces — it's only meant for retaining the heat of pre-warmed liquid toppings.

I tested this feature by microwaving a few squares of milk chocolate and reviewing the consistency of the melted confectionery. The good news is the warmer itself isn't hot to the touch, but does keep the contents liquid.

Cleaning and maintaining the Cuisinart Soft Serve Ice Cream Maker

Keeping the ice cream maker clean is relatively simple. Of course, before any of your best cleaning supplies touch your appliance, you'll want to switch it off from the main power unit.

To clean the exterior and base, I used a damp microfiber towel (I like these Amazon Basics cleaning cloths). The ice cream bowl, lid, and handle are unfortunately not dishwasher safe, so I used a little Gain dish soap (available from Amazon) with my Dishmatic.

The mixing paddle, topping containers, topping chute, and drip tray are all dishwasher safe, but on top rack only. However, seeing as I already had my faucet running, I cleaned all of these in the same washing-up session.

After 12 months, an after-sales service team will repair or replace the product. If you have a young family or live with two or three other people who love ice cream as much as I do — the Cuisinart Soft Serve Ice Cream Maker is a great (albeit novel) kitchen appliance. It's a great eco-friendly alternative to driving to a fast food restaurant, idling in a queue, and then driving home. That carbon footprint for an ice cream doesn’t seem worth it. Plus, at home, you can customize your order, and know exactly what's gone into it.

The downside with testing alone is I had to make a 0.9-liter tub of soft serve, and was left to eat as much as I could so it wouldn't go to waste. Of course, I could have made less, but we don't do things in halves here, so I gave it my best in true Bruce Bogtrotter style! 

On the contrary, if you're more of the sorbet type, you can decant it from the bowl and keep your frozen fruit mix in the freezer compartment of your refrigerator.

Size-wise, there is enough counter clearance (if you're wondering where to store appliances in a small kitchen), but it does feel quite large in my galley-style cook space. But if you are looking for something a little slicker, the Ninja Creami (available on Amazon) might be a better option. Our former head of reviews reviewed the Ninja Creami and awarded it 4 out of 5 stars.

How we test ice cream makers

I was sent this Cuisinart Soft Serve Ice Cream Maker by the brand for free, and used it over the course of one week in my two-bedroom apartment. Here are some of the things I scored the appliance on.

Packaging: How well are the machine and accessories protected in transit? Do the parts come wrapped in unnecessary amounts of plastic?

Weight: How easy is it to carry from my front door to the kitchen?

Setup: How easy is it to assemble the machine (if applicable) and make ice cream? How long does this process take? Does it require instructions?

Recipe and performance: I sampled a few of the recipes from the booklet, assessed the ease of preparation, and evaluated the consistency and flavor. 

Noise levels: Is this machine quiet enough to make ice cream on demand, without disturbing co-habitants and neighbors?

Size: Can the machine be used in a small kitchen? How tall is the machine and is there adequate counter clearance for it to sit underneath cupboards?

Features: Are the programmable settings helpful? Does the keep-warm plate keep sauces liquid?

Cleaning: How easy is it to maintain this machine? Are milk and chocolate stains wipeable? Can the drip tray and waste bin be removed easily? Which parts are hand-washable or dishwasher-safe? How easy is it to deep clean this ice cream maker?

"Copper metal reads as a warm neutral and pairs with a variety of color schemes," Cullum says. "Unlike your stainless steel appliances, pots, and pans, copper can be left out as a decorative element that adds rather than subtracts from your kitchen decor."

Adding to that, designer Artem Kropovinsky insists on pairing natural looks when working with copper. "The fashionable feel is created using neutral colors and combining them with raw materials like stone," he notes. 

And though it's fairly low-maintenance, there are a few things to know about copper if you want it to look brand new or embrace the patina.

"Copper appliances and cookware look better and more unique over time because they naturally patina with wear," Cullum notes. "If you want a sparkling copper look, you can easily polish it back to its original shine." It's also easy to clean copper, and you really only need soap and warm water to keep your kettle looking spotless.

Christina also loves the fact you can use metal utensils on it and even clean it with a metal scourer, adding, “if this makes you shudder, it's dishwasher safe too.”

Before she got started with cooking in the video, Cameron measured out all the ingredients carefully. “Her blue and white bowls are the perfect combination of vintage, Mediterranean, and chinoiserie,” says Christina. 

The navy and white provide a great contrast to the warm spices and orange persimmon fruit she uses in her recipe, making it easy for her to see where each spice is.

You can also make a delicious Thanksgiving sandwich in one of our favorite toasters — some even come with a toaster oven setting which works very similarly. Popping your sandwich in a small air fryer is also a great idea as you'll get a super crispy finish in no time.

Investing in a panini press can be a genius move over the holiday season. You can set up a panini station for the whole family to use up leftovers with all the toppings and condiments for a make-your-own sandwich buffet. 

Just make sure while you're working that you're keeping your grill clean as gunk can build up pretty quickly if you're not careful. In fact, you'll probably be giving your whole kitchen a deep clean before guests arrive so remember to throw those grill plates in the dishwasher while you're getting down to business. Beginner chefs rejoice, fan-favorite brand Our Place has just released the Better Bowl Set with everything you need for day-to-day cooking. I'll be honest, I've fallen out of love with cooking lately as I've gotten so busy but this set might be enough to get me back in the kitchen.

I really love meal prepping to make weeknights easier and these new mixing bowls will make the process so much better, plus they come with a salad spinner, a grater, and a juicer. Genius!

But is this nine-piece set a little too good to be true? I break down if the Better Bowl Set from Our Place is really worth the spend. After all, it may be the perfect accompaniment to my favorite small kitchen appliances.

Hot off the back of the Dream Cooker release last week, Our Place has hit the market with another foodie product. While I haven't had a chance to test it yet, I took a look at the new Better Bowl Set to see if it's worth the spend.

The brand-new Better Bowl Set is available on the Our Place website for $115. Now that might seem like quite a hefty price tag but the nine-piece set is complete with three mixing bowls and lids, a juice, a grater, and a salad spinner. Pretty much everything an amateur chef needs for daily food prep. 

The set comes in four colors — steam (a neutral beige), sage green, blue salt, and lavender. Free shipping, a 100-day trial, and free returns are all included with purchase.

Whats included in the Better Bowl Set

The Better Bowl Set comes with nine components — three mixing bowls and lids, a juicer, a grater, and a salad spinner. The juicer, grater, and salad spinner are all built to sit inside or on top of the mixing bowls so everything fits together. These are some pretty important small kitchen must-haves.

The set is made from 60% certified post-consumer recycled plastic. The mixing bowls are dishwasher and freezer-safe but they cannot be used in the microwave or the oven, which TBH is a major drawback for me. 

The storage lids are transparent so you can easily see what's what (a major bonus when I'm rummaging through my fridge for a midnight snack). Plus they're leak-proof so no accidents storing soups or sauces. 

Is the Better Bowl Set worth it?

All in all, $115 is a little pricey for a few mixing bowls and accessories. Our Place has a pretty great reputation though and its fans (me included) tend to write rave reviews about their products. 

Personally, I couldn't be happier with my Always Pan from Our Place so I'm considering picking these up. The only downside I'm mulling over is the fact that the mixing bowls are not microwave-safe. 

The Better Bowls Set would be the perfect starter kit for someone moving into their first apartment or a freshman in college moving into the dorms.

I’m experienced in making Japanese green tea. So when I heard about the Cuzen Matcha Maker and caught a glimpse of this sexy little machine — I had to try it. Here’s the thing I learned about this verdant brew: Powders oxidize quickly, which means it both loses its color and vibrancy, but also its taste and antioxidants. With this innovation, you can store and grind matcha leaves within the machine itself, sort of like a bean-to-cup coffee maker. To say I was intrigued was an understatement.

I’ve gone from using the Trader Joe’s matcha latte mix (which I quickly abandoned when I looked at the added sugar) to trying out every variety of ground matcha from Whole Foods to finally finding a brand I liked from Amazon and putting myself on a recurring subscription. But, as I write this, I’m looking at my jar of ground matcha and realizing it looks kind of brown. 

I knew going in that I was signing up for a single-purpose small kitchen appliance, but I was willing to dedicate the counter space. When you live in a small home, you have to prioritize. Thankfully, though, this $299 matcha maker is petite. It also proves incredible taste can come out of one small, efficient machine. Curious to learn more? What I thought of the Cuzen matcha maker

As I mentioned, I’ve made matcha many times at home before. And, inevitably, it always ends up grainy, with all of the matcha sinking to the bottom like sediment. Turns out my whisking skills are low to non-existent. For me, the Cuzen Matcha Maker is a game-changer. 

While no matcha machine is going to ensure there’s absolutely no powder sinking to the bottom, the problem is nearly eliminated with the Cuzen Matcha Maker — that or it’s not an issue because I’m drinking it so quickly (because it’s so good!). The matcha lattes I’ve been whipping up, including the iced mint matcha latte I’m sipping on right now, are barista quality. Because they’re made with fresh leaves, they aren’t overly sweet or too watery and bland. They are just right — the Goldilocks of matcha, if you will.

Using this machine is actually foolproof. There are only two buttons. Strength and start. It could not be easier. As long as you figure out how to pour the matcha into the top and put the whisking cup, filled with water, on the bottom — you’re good.

The matcha that comes out is a brilliant and bright green which is exactly how you want matcha to look. It’s strong enough to stand up to lattes, and I love that it can be lukewarm or used in a similar fashion to one of the best iced coffee makers, which is perfect since I typically prefer an iced matcha latte (served in those Ball mason jars you might have seen on Amazon or something from our best iced coffee cup edit). The taste is mild enough that it doesn’t need sugar, and I actually found that adding a little bit of sugar was too much. I like it as is.

This machine is also gorgeous. The circular design that lets you see the whisking cup is striking and sculptural. This is, hands down, the prettiest kitchen appliance that’s ever graced my countertops.

Unboxing and assembling the Cuzen matcha maker

I’m big on minimal packaging and Cuzen made my anti-waste heart sing. The machine was snuggly tucked inside the box but with minimal extra packaging. Just enough to keep it from bouncing around and to protect it on its journey to my home.

Once I took it out of the box, I made the best discovery. The Cuzen Matcha Maker comes fully assembled. You pull it out of the box and it’s ready to go. 

Normally, that’s a huge plus. It makes life easy. However, I do wish there had been just a tiny bit of installation involved. I didn’t try to take it apart until after I’d made my first batch of matcha, and I was definitely a little confused about how the mill pieces fit together. I think if I’d had to snap the inner workings into place from the beginning, it would have been easier than reverse engineering. But, hey, I can’t complain about not having to do any work, right?

The Cuzen Matcha Maker Kit also comes with three 4-gram packets of different matcha leaf blends. There’s the premium matcha leaf, signature matcha leaf, and latte blend matcha leaf. A single packet makes up to four cups, depending on the strength you choose, but you can buy additional 20-gram matcha leaf packets for $30 each, which make up to 20 cups. That's a heck of a lot cheaper than the $5 matcha lattes ($6 if you count tip) that I get from the coffee shop around the corner.

Using the Cuzen matcha maker

I actually ended up being confused by how simple the Cuzen Matcha Maker is to use. I wanted it to work like a coffee maker, where you pour water into a tank, and out comes the delicious liquid. Nope. This is the exact opposite.

Instead, you fill the small plastic whisking cup with water up to the fill line, which is approximately 2 fluid ounces, exactly what you’ll need for a shot of matcha. They recommend room temperature or cold water, though you can use water up to 175 degrees Fahrenheit, just short of boiling. 

There are indentations in the cup that make it easy to line up right below the dispenser. This is easy in theory, but it took me a few tries. Now I’ve got it. You’ll also notice a plastic whisking device in the bottom of the cup — that’s what will do all the hard work.

At this point, I kept leafing through the booklet looking for an exact amount to pour into the mill for a cup of matcha, but, no, it’s easier than that. You pour an entire packet of matcha leaves into the ceramic mill at the top, then put the lid back on, creating an airtight seal. It stays fresh in the machine for up to 60 days.

Next, you choose a level of strength, from one to three. Level one uses 1 gram of matcha in 2 ounces of water, level two is 1.5 grams, and level three is 2 grams. I usually opt for level three to give my matcha enough flavor to stand up to milky lattes.

Press start, and you’re off to the races. The machine starts whisking, and ground matcha powder is gradually dispensed from the mill. The powder is so fine, 20 micrometers, that you’ll barely notice it, though you will notice the water, like magic, becoming a deep, vibrant green. You’ll hear a beep as the machine slows down and, voilà, your matcha shot is ready to be enjoyed or poured into a hot or cold latte (my matcha preference).

Cleaning the Cuzen matcha maker

On a daily basis, you’ll only need to wipe the machine and nozzle and clean the whisking cup. However, every time you go through your leaves, or approximately every 60 days, you’ll want to disassemble the entire mill, taking care to separate the lower and upper mills. This includes using a screwdriver (like this Amazon bestseller) to separate the plastic parts — see, these things really are airtight! 

Each piece should be cleaned with dish soap (Method's Lime and Sea Salt pick on Amazon complements the green vibes), warm water, and a dishwashing brush (or get an OXO Soap Dispensing Palm Brush from Amazon).

Rinse thoroughly, then tap to make sure all water is removed before patting to dry, then set out to continue to air dry. This reasonably-priced two-slice toaster offers everything you need and nothing you don’t. It has seven shade settings and five bread options, as well as buttons for frozen and gluten-free bread. We loved that it delivers perfectly even browning across the bread, and its extra-wide slots were able to accommodate even the thickest bagels we tested.

Plus, this is one of the few toasters that lets you select a shade level in between the numbered settings, making it easy to find the perfect level of toasting for your preferences. Our only complaint is that its stainless steel exterior smudges easily, but overall, we think this toaster is well worth the price for any breakfast aficionado.  

The best digital toaster

If you toast food on a daily basis, this high-tech motorized toaster is a worthwhile splurge. It provided some of the most even toastings of all the units we tested, and it has several useful settings that make it a breeze to operate. For example, the motorized lift silently raises and lowers your bread; it has a digital countdown timer on its screen while your food cooks; and the “quick view” button lets you see how well the contents are toasting. There’s even a special setting for just one slice of bread that provides more even browning on both sides. We love the smooth, high-tech operation of this appliance, but if you’re not someone who regularly toasts food, the price might be a little steep to justify.  

The best toaster oven

This 2-in-1 toaster had the most unique design of our tested appliances. It can be used upright as a regular toaster, featuring seven shade settings and defrost and bagel buttons, but you can flip it on its side and use it as a small air fryer toaster oven. Its single slot is big enough to accommodate thick bagels and delivers impressively even toasting on bread. When used as a toaster oven, the appliance cooks surprisingly quickly — it can reach temperatures up to 400 degrees and was able to reheat a slice of pizza in just four minutes, leaving the crust crispy and the cheese slightly melted. The multi-purpose design is ideal for smaller kitchens where space is at a premium. 

The best mini toaster oven

You won’t have to worry about burning your bread with this unique toaster, which has a see-through window to monitor your food while it cooks. We were impressed at how evenly it toasted bread, leaving it perfectly browned from top to bottom, and it delivered a nice range of browning across its seven settings. Because the toaster only has one slot, it’s a tight fit to cook two wide slices of bread at once, but it is doable. The major downsides of this toaster are that the plastic construction feels somewhat flimsy, and the extra-long form is somewhat bulky to store.

What is this air fryer like to use? Well, our tester used it every single day since it arrived on her doorstep. It has replaced her oven use by at least 85 percent, and that’s not an exaggeration. 

This convenient machine has an impressive temperature range of 80–450°F. It can keep food warm and even broil. There’s a handy interior light that's way better than an oven light and allows you to check on food without opening. If you bake, you know opening an oven can be the death of your cake.

The settings are clear and easy to read, and the timer is self-explanatory. The loud retro-sounding ding alerts you once the time is up. Another nice touch — especially with young kids in the house — is the auto shutoff function.

The instructions give great advice as far as how to cook a wide array of foods (chicken, pork, beef, etc.) and they seem to be fairly spot on.

The best looking toaster

This toaster truly lives up to its name — the countertop appliance is more aesthetic than most thanks to its matte finish, which is available in several trendy colors. It’s also the only toaster we tested that has a touchscreen display that shuts off when not in use, giving it a minimalistic appearance on your counter. There are seven toast shade settings to choose from, as well as frozen and bagel modes, and while the settings offer a wide range of brownness, we did notice that bread doesn’t always come out evenly toasted. In particular, the bottom edges of our food tended to be much lighter than the rest.  

The best Amazon toaster

This two-slice toaster is an affordable option for anyone who just wants a simple, no-frills appliance. It has six shade settings, as well as frozen and bagel options, and the exterior stays cool to the touch during operation. During testing, we found that it delivers mostly even toasting, though the bottom of your food may be a bit lighter than the top. However, it might take a little trial and error to find the right shade setting—we noticed that there’s a larger-than-average increase in brownness between settings, and our bread was almost burnt on setting 3.

4 things to consider when buying a toaster

Most toasters have a fairly similar design — at least at first glance — but there are several factors you’ll want to think about when choosing an appliance for your kitchen. 

Slots
Your average toaster has two slots — perfect for cooking two halves of a bagel or English muffin at once — but there are other options, as well. One-slot toasters generally have a long, skinny design, which allows them to accommodate thicker pieces of bread, but depending on their length, you might not be able to cook two pieces of bread at once. Alternatively, if your family is always waiting in line at the toaster, you might want to look for a four-slice toaster that can cook multiple servings simultaneously. 

Settings
Toasters generally offer six or seven shade settings, allowing you to select how browned you want your food. Some models only allow you to use the numbered settings, while others can be set in between numbers for more granular control. 

It’s also common for toasters to have a bagel setting, which increases the cooking time to accommodate for the bread thickness. Finally, most units have a defrost or frozen food setting, which is ideal for frozen waffles or pastries. 

Features
In addition to standard settings, some toasters offer additional features that make them more versatile or easy to operate. Some units we tested had different bread settings — such as toast, English muffin, or waffle — and automatically adjusted cook time based on the food selected. 

Other products have special settings for toasting just one piece of bread, digital screens, or motorized lifts. If you use your toaster frequently, these types of features might be worth the additional cost, but they’re probably unnecessary if you only break out the appliance once in a while. 

Cost
Toasters can range quite dramatically in price — a no-frills model can be as inexpensive as $25, while certain high-end, high-tech models cost over $300. You’ll want to take your budget into account as you shop and choose an option that offers the features you want within your preferred price range.

How we tested the best toasters

It can be tricky to tell if a toaster is up to snuff when you’re just looking at the product listing. We wanted to get a sense of how today’s best toasters perform in the kitchen, so we put nine models to the test over the course of several weeks. 

To assess each product’s toasting abilities and shade range, we used each model to cook three pieces of bread on low, medium, and high settings — yes, we went through three whole loaves of bread in the process. We compared the shade range of the three pieces and assessed whether the toaster browned the bread evenly. Some left our bread beautifully browned, while others resulted in patchy or striped cooking. 

In addition to these standardized tests, we also used each toaster to cook a variety of foods, including bagels and frozen waffles. For toasters with special settings, such as one-slice toasting, we made a point to use all the different features to see if they’re actually useful or just gimmicks. With all this info in hand, we then scored each toaster and sorted them into categories based on their best uses.

1. It's now oven safe (up to 450°F!)

Breaking news: You can stick the Always Pan 2.0 in the oven. Now, don't get me wrong — I love my small air fryer. But there's something about bringing a cute vessel to the table and letting everyone dig in. Unplugging my convection oven and dumping it on the dining table doesn't really have the same appeal, IYKWIM.

Learning how to season a stainless steel pan requires no prior culinary experience. If anything, treating your non-toxic cookware will work in your favor if you've got poor cheffing skills.

Here's how it works. Before you've even started cooking with them, you can reduce the risk of scratching your pans and decrease the chances of having to scrub away burnt-on food. Seasoning involves coating the surface of your pots and pans with a layer of fat or oil, which then creates a protective barrier. Then — get this — instead of using soap to clean the stainless steel, you'll simply wipe it down and maintain it with salt.

Consider this the heat protection spray for your pans — except you don't have to do this every time you eat.

• A non-abrasive dishwashing sponge — Scotch-Brite non-Scratch Sponges (from Amazon) are good
• Cooking oil with a high smoke point — Peanut oil or coconut oil both work well and you can grab them on Amazon if you need to
• An oven
• Paper towel — You can't beat Bounty in my opinion, plus it's available at Amazon
• Table salt
• An oven mitt (or tea towel) — you'll need this especially if you're taking the pan out of the oven.

How to season a stainless steel pan

Step 1: Wash the pan

Start by giving your pan a thorough washing, especially if you’re using your stainless steel pan for the very first time. Use a dish soap (like the unscented 365 Whole Foods dish soap from Amazon) and warm water to gently scrub the inside and outside of the pan. Rinse and dry it thoroughly.

Step 2: Coat your stainless steel pan with oil

Coat the inside of your stainless steel pan with a layer of cooking oil. Preferably, an oil with a high smoking point like peanut oil or coconut oil, both available at Amazon if you don't have any. Use your fingers to coat the entire interior of the pan, including the inner rim.

Step 3: Heat the oiled pan

The pan can either be seasoned on your stovetop or in the oven. If using the stove, place the pan over medium heat. Let it sit until the oil begins to smoke then remove it from the heat. If using an oven, place the oiled pan in a 350-degrees Fahrenheit oven for an hour.

Step 4: Cool the pan

Once the pan has been removed from the heat, let it cool until it can be handled. Using a paper towel, wipe all the excess oil (Bounty is super absorbent and on Amazon). Before storing the pan in your cupboard, place a paper towel or two between each stacked pan to avoid scratching.

Step 5: Cleaning your seasoned pan

To maintain the seasoning on your pan, avoid washing it with soap. Instead, wipe the pan clean with a paper towel after each use. If you find that food is still sticking, scrub the pan with oil and table salt then wipe it clean with a paper towel. If you have to wash the pan with soap, use the steps above to re-season it before you use the pan again.

FAQs

Good to know
You get four full plates, four midi plates, four midi bowls, four demi plates, and four demi bowls so there's a size to suit all mealtimes. While it can survive all of the elements (ie: microwave, oven, freezer), you should let the plate come to room temperature before going from extreme hot to cold (and vice-versa).

Move over ceramic — there's a new sheriff in town! For that classic restaurant feel (that's also suitable for casual eats), you can't go wrong with this recycled tempered glass white dinner white set. This Corelle compilation is under $60 and has been given an average rating of 4.7 stars from almost 12,000 customers. Though there are five different patterns to choose from, I think the crisp white simplicity makes the best canvas to show off my foodie skills. In my head, I'm next year's MasterChef contestant with these.

What reviewers love about this dinnerware set
When scanning through the thousands of reviews, there was a consensus that this brand's products are durable with some sets lasting decades! This doesn't surprise me, as the brand has been going since 1970, so have had over 50 years in the game. And while you might think glass is fragile, the material has been heat-treated to give it a virtually unbreakable composition. Both plain and patterned work well in formal and relaxed settings.

Good to know
This 18-piece set includes six 10.25-inch dinner plates, six 6.75-inch appetizer plates, and six 18-oz soup/cereal bowls. But, in some cases (when purchased from Amazon), a few of these arrived broken or weren't in the box at all.

Though STAUB is probably better known for its quality cast iron cookware (including *that* dutch oven used by Courteney Cox), they undeniably create good tableware too. Though I haven't physically plated up food on it myself, this rustic stoneware set is the perfect modern traditional touch for any home. It's giving dinner in the south of France vibes.

What reviewers love about this dinnerware set
It'd probably be easier (and quicker) to list what they don't love about this set (that's mentioned below, btw). In short, this stoneware collection is aesthetically-pleasing, isn't too heavy (or light), doesn't crack under the pressure of thermal shock, and it can be used in your popular kitchen appliances to reheat leftovers. Though stoneware is naturally porous, the enamel glaze will protect it from water damage if you soak these in the sink. 

Good to know
The 12-piece dinnerware set features all the key pieces you need to set your table in style. The set includes four 10.2-inch dinner plates, four 9-inch salad plates, and 4 x 5-inch cereal bowls. In keeping with the homely feels, the base is a little distressed — it's not necessarily a bad thing, just something one reviewer said wasn't in keeping with their taste. This set has been known to be on sale around Black Friday too.

Love a bit of modern black home decor? This fashionable set is the perfect dinnerware set for those who love monochrome or have lots of structured tailoring in their wardrobe. I've got my eye on the black with white rim version which is tableware's answer to a pinstripe suit. Plus, unlike the others in this guide, it comes with four mugs too for that put-together look. 

What reviewers like about this dinnerware set
Don't underestimate the durability of this earthy and organic stoneware — its sultry, soft matte look can be deceiving. In the dinnerware set category on Amazon, these are only pipped to the post by the Corelle plates. They are on the heavier side, but we think this is a great feature that makes them feel more expensive and industrial-chic/mid-century modern. Plus... if you've got butterfingers, their overly-sturdy nature is unintentionally convenient! For soupier dishes, the raised lip prevents sauces from spilling off the end of the plate.

Good to know
This set includes four round dinner plates, four salad plates, four bowls, and four handled mugs. All with a post-modern lipped rim design. Though they're suitable for the dishwasher, some reviewers found it frustrating that they couldn't fit the thicker-than-normal plates into the designated slots. Otherwise, they're super easy to clean — pie, sauce, and grease included. 

Nope — it's not another black dinnerware set. It's blue. You see, navy blue decor is having a moment right now, so it'd make sense to go all matchy-matchy with this smart set. These get chocolate brownie points for their eco-credibility as they're made in a zero-waste ceramics facility in Portugal. Say 'Obrigado' to me once you've sat down and seen these stunners IRL. What'll surprise you is that each piece is crafted by artisans using a blend of recycled and locally-sourced clay from just a few miles up the road. Though they are dark, I think they'd stand out quite well year-round, whether you're eating outside, or keeping guests out of the cold.

Though the dinner plates are quite large by most people's standards, reviews appear complimentary on the whole. Buyers like the asymmetry and unique nuances in the set, and the word 'beautiful' was generously peppered through a lot of the comments — if you'll pardon the pun.

Good to know
This set comes with four of The Dinner Plates, four of The Salad Plates, 4 of The Breakfast Bowls, and The Pasta Bowls (love a 'Plowl' I do!). Though you do save 10% when buying it as a bundle, you could mix and match the colors up as everything is available to buy individually. If you notice that your knives and forks have scratched up the surface — don't worry! A little Bar Keepers Friend powdered cleanser will take care of it. Oh, and if you get the Speckled White version, it's a lot more flecked than the image shows. I assume reviewers didn't like this because it made the crockery look dirty, even after it'd been cleaned. This set is a little chunky, so the same issues with fitting them in the dishwasher might arise.

3 things to consider when choosing a dinnerware set

Before you start shopping, there are a few factors to think about to ensure you find the best dinnerware set for you. 

1. How many pieces do you need ⁠— and how do they store?
It's initially worth calculating how many place settings you need. We recommend four place settings for a two-person household, and eight for a family of four or five. In terms of pieces, you’ll need to make up one set, most of our favorites have already made that decision for you. Offering a selection of 12 pieces, these typically include dinner plates, side plates, and small soup or cereal bowls, while larger sets may also include mugs and other add-ons. Some exceptions to these sell their sets separately.

It's also worth paying attention to the size and shape of each individual item. Choose pieces that are appropriate for your eating habits and cupboard space — and don’t forget to make sure they can fit in your dishwasher (if they are dishwasher safe, of course).

2. What are they made from? 
To know what you are buying, consider the material of your dinnerware set. A popular choice is porcelain. Loved for its glossy, smooth finish, porcelain is made from fine clay and is resistant to chipping. For more formal place settings, bone China is a mix of kaolin clay and bone ash, extremely durable and fired to a borderline translucent finish that comments higher prices than most. Stoneware is a practical option that’s on-trend for its rustic look. Its single firing and glaze finish means it doesn't achieve a bright white finish like porcelain or bone China, but many prefer it for its weighty feel and pocket-friendly price. 

3. Match your dinnerware set to your home style 
Select a style that suits your kitchen. With a range of colors, patterns, and finishes, we recommend finding a set depending on its use. For everyday use, a design that’s simple and practical provides the best blank canvas for every meal. Sets with more decorative designs may become dated. Instead, save the pattern and print for an occasion-only set. And if you’re looking for one that does both, then a plain color with a modern edge, like a speckled or reactive glaze finish is durable enough for everyday use but nice enough for entertaining. Another tip: brighten up a basic set with colorful glassware, placemats, or tablecloths for a spruced-up table setting.

From breakfast to dinner and dessert, many meals were eaten off the Our Place set in order to test the look, durability, and overall value for money. Whilst it might have been somewhat possible for one person to eat their way through numerous rounds of five different plates of food, it seemed only sensible to share food for thought on our favorite dinnerware sets amongst the Real Homes team.
