I've spotted the Scandinavian sleep method all over my TikTok feed, and I think it looks like the perfect solution to my partner's and my nighttime squabbles.

Whether you've seen this method on TikTok too or are just intrigued by the name, I've got you covered with all the info you need to know. This sleep method has a Scandi-style name and, just like the design method, it’s actually very simple and breezy.

“The Scandinavian sleep method is all about partners sharing a bed but having their own separate duvets,” explains Marion Crittendon, sleep and respiratory care expert at Order Your Supplies.

“It stops couples having fights over the sheets or getting woken up by someone's midnight acrobatics,” she adds.

Essentially it's like having your own sleep fortress, tailored to your exact liking.

Impact on physical contact

One potential downside that Dr. Sham has noticed is that using separate bedding may reduce opportunities for physical closeness and intimacy during sleep.

“Physical contact like cuddling or holding hands while sleeping can enhance feelings of intimacy, comfort, and emotional connection between partners,” he explains.

“When each partner has their own set of blankets or duvets, there might be less spontaneous physical touch during the night,” he adds.

This may lead to a perceived decrease in intimacy over time, which you might not want if you’re sharing your bed with someone you really love.

Financial cost

If you’re looking for budget-friendly bedroom ideas, investing in double the duvet might not be the best thing for you.

Marion explains, “Using separate bedding can be a tad more expensive, and managing multiple duvets may complicate bed-making.”

Maintaining these can also come at a cost, as if you have to load multiple duvet covers into your washing machines, this may increase your electricity bill.

What I thought of the Turmerry organic latex mattress

 I thought that the Turmerry organic latex mattress was very comfortable and offered excellent pressure point prevention, even without one of the best mattress toppers. 

While it didn’t offer enough support for my personal sleeping habits, I think it would work well for many people who prefer a softer mattress. The mattress arrives as four separate layers, which is helpful because each layer weighs 23 pounds. Once assembled, it’s heavy and difficult to move, but it also securely stays in place and features a soft and well-designed cover.

The mattress’ eco-friendly manufacturing is also appealing. It’s crafted with organically grown latex and holds numerous certifications indicating its safety. Additionally, Turmerry plants a tree for every mattress ordered.

Unboxing and setting up the Turmerry organic latex mattress

This mattress in a box arrived in three plain cardboard boxes, all of which were in excellent shape, but were surprisingly heavy, weighing over 40 pounds each. 

I tested the Twin 12-inch mattress, which is shipped as four foam layers plus a pillow and the mattress cover. Each mattress layer weighs about 23 pounds and is shipped compressed and wrapped in many layers of plastic and clear packing tape. There were no packing materials within the box, but the mattress layers were packed tightly and didn’t seem to have shifted. 

Additionally, there were no instructions included with the mattress. I was able to look them up on the Turmerry website, but having printed instructions to refer to during the assembly process would have been nice. Assembling the mattress took me half an hour.

The mattress cover is well-designed. It features layers of cotton and wool that give it a quality, strong feel, but it’s also very soft. The cover unzips completely, so I was able to insert the mattress layers into it surprisingly easily.

Closing the cover takes some patience, but again, the process went more smoothly than I thought it would. The top of the cover features a four-inch interior liner that you pull down to keep the zipper from snagging on the latex layers.

That said, once I had the mattress assembled, it weighed about 92 pounds. It was very difficult to adjust it on my bed. The mattress has a very soft and flexible feel, and is so heavy that I was actually starting to pull my bed frame across the floor as I moved the mattress. It would greatly benefit from a handle or two in the cover, which I think would give more grip and make it easier to move. 

The mattress also included a latex pillow. It was already in a zippered cover, so once I added a pillowcase, it was ready for use. 

While assembling the mattress, I noticed a moderate odor. This wasn’t a chemical odor but is what I would describe as reminiscent of rubber. I’m sensitive to smells, but it wasn’t enough to bother me, and I was able to sleep on the mattress the same night I unboxed it. The odor gradually dissipated over the course of a week, and by the seventh day, I could barely notice it.

Is the Turmerry organic latex mattress comfortable?

This organic mattress is labeled as medium firmness but it felt very soft to me. The mattress doesn’t offer a lot in terms of support, especially when compared to the feeling of a medium firmness hybrid or innerspring mattress. Given that I have some back issues, I don’t think that I could sleep comfortably on it long-term. However, anyone who prefers a softer mattress or who doesn’t necessarily depend on that support might love this mattress. 

I did notice that the mattress is excellent in preventing pressure points, and I felt none of the pressure that I often notice around my ankles, hips, or shoulders when sleeping on my side. I was able to turn over and onto my back easily during the night, and while I found that my hips dipped down a little more than is comfortable while sleeping on my back, it’s important to note that many sleepers would find this to be extra comfortable. 

The mattress does have a bouncy feel. I found that motion transfer occurred from about 30 inches away, so this may not be the best choice for couples who are light sleepers. I was able to feel my cat jump up onto and walk around on the mattress. 

In addition to not being terribly supportive, I found that the mattress significantly lacked edge support. When I sat or even pressed down with my hand on the edge of the mattress, it compressed to about half of its height. As a result, this mattress would not be an ideal choice for anyone who depends on being able to push against the edges for support when getting out of bed.

The pillow compressed easily and didn’t provide much in terms of support or height. I prefer very thin pillows, so I found this ideal. Anyone who likes a plush, supportive pillow will likely find this one too thin and too soft. 

Is the Turmerry organic latex mattress breathable and cool?

While I tested the mattress during the winter, I didn’t notice any additional heat buildup. All four layers feature generously sized perforations that go through the entire layer. Those perforations allow for increased air circulation.

Cleaning the Turmerry organic latex mattress

Turmerry recommends using a waterproof mattress protector to maximize its longevity. According to Turmerry’s instructions, you should air the mattress out for a few hours once a month and should vacuum the top of the mattress every few weeks. Additionally, you should rotate the mattress from head to toe every few months. 

Turmerry notes that you can spot clean liquid spills with a mix of white distilled vinegar and water, then sprinkle baking soda over the mattress and let it rest in a ventilated area. After eight hours, you should vacuum up the baking soda and let the mattress completely dry. 

Is the Turmerry organic latex mattress right for you?

The Turmerry Organic Latex Mattress is ideal for sleepers who prefer a softer feel and who don’t need significant support. It’s excellent at helping to prevent pressure points, and I can see both back and side sleepers appreciating that quality. While the mattress is very comfortable, its lack of edge support means it’s not well-suited to anyone who depends on pushing off the mattress edge when getting out of bed. 

Since the mattress is very heavy, plan to have a couple of people to help with setup, especially if working with a Queen or King size. That weight does offer the benefit of helping to keep the mattress securely in place, but maneuvering it on the bed is difficult. However, this is a versatile mattress that can be used not only with traditional box springs but also with adjustable beds, so it can work with a variety of setups. 

The fact that the mattress is made of organic materials, including organic latex, cotton, and wool, is highly appealing. I imagine it would be a great choice for many people who are health-conscious and looking to avoid their exposure to chemicals. 

How we tested the Turmerry organic latex mattress

Turmerry sent me the Turmerry Organic Latex Mattress and I tested it in my home for several weeks. I used these criteria to guide how we test mattresses.

Unboxing: I considered the condition of the mattress and the boxes that arrived in, as well as how easily I could carry the boxes and remove the components. I also looked at the types of packaging materials used and considered whether those materials were recyclable. 

Operation: I evaluated the entire process of using the mattress, including the setup and how well I was able to sleep on it. I performed several tests, including measuring the motion transfer and evaluating the amount of edge support that the mattress offers. I paid attention to how I felt while sleeping on the mattress, including factors like whether the mattress slept hot and whether I felt any pressure points.

What I thought of the Turmerry latex mattress topper

I found the Turmerry latex mattress topper to be highly comfortable and very effective in preventing pressure points. I was able to comfortably sleep on my side and back with no noticeable extra heat buildup. While the topper weighs 30 pounds and was difficult to get into place by myself, those qualities also helped to keep it securely in place, solving the shifting problem that is so common with other types of mattress toppers. 

Knowing that this topper is an eco-friendly product makes me appreciate it even more. It’s crafted from latex from organically grown rubber trees in Sri Lanka, and Turmerry advertises that it plants a tree in your name for every order.

Setting up the Turmerry latex mattress topper

The Turmerry Latex Mattress Topper arrived in a single, plain cardboard box. Since the Queen three-inch topper weighs 30 lbs, the box was awkward and heavy to carry. The topper was tightly wrapped in multiple layers of plastic, and the plastic was then covered in clear packing tape. The box and topper were in excellent condition when they arrived. 

There were no instructions in the box, so I placed the wrapped topper on my bed and tried to use scissors to open the packaging. This was difficult, as the topper was tightly compressed, and there were several layers of tape to cut through. I never found a point where I could pull all of the tape off and then just unwrap the packaging, so I had to cut the entire wrapping off. 

Once unwrapped, I tried to position the topper on my bed, which was also a challenge. The topper has a texture that’s very sticky and grippy against any sort of fabric, so moving and sliding it is a two-person job. I did get the topper into place and was pleased to see that it’s generously sized. Whereas other toppers that I’ve tested have often been a couple of inches too short for my mattress, this topper hung about two inches off of both ends of the mattress. 

After being unwrapped, the topper immediately expanded to its full height, unlike memory foam toppers, which gradually expanded over hours after unwrapping. 

There was a moderate off-gassing smell, but it wasn’t particularly unpleasant. Honestly, I thought it smelled a bit like cookie dough. The smell dissipated quickly, and within two hours I couldn’t smell it when I walked into the room. 

I could smell the odor for the first week while sleeping on the topper, but it was faint and didn’t bother me.

Testing the Turmerry latex mattress topper

Test 1: Firmness and support

I tried the three inch medium firmness topper and found it to be very comfortable, both when sleeping on my side and on my back. I immediately noticed that the topper does an excellent job of relieving pressure points, especially on my knees, ankles, and hips while sleeping on my side. 

While the topper has a soft and cushioned feel to it, I was able to easily roll over onto my back without feeling like I was restricted or sinking in too deeply. According to Turmerry, the topper is constructed with five zones to support the different areas of your body. I can’t necessarily feel a difference in the zones, but I would say that this topper is more supportive than others that I’ve tried, like the Allswell 4” Memory Foam Mattress Topper I reviewed.

Test 2: Motion tranfer

The topper also helps to prevent motion transfer. It’s supportive enough to keep a glass of water upright. I pressed down on multiple points of the topper and didn’t manage to vibrate the water in the glass until I was about 14 inches from the glass. 

That ability to prevent motion transfer would make this topper excellent for couples or people who sleep with their pets in bed. My cats often join me in bed and I wasn’t able to feel or hear them walking unless they were right beside me. 

Test 3: Edge support

While the topper does have a supportive feel to it, it doesn’t offer much in terms of edge support. I can fully compress the edge of the topper with my hand, so it may not be an ideal option for anyone who has difficulty getting out of bed and who relies on pressing on the bed’s edges to lift themselves. 

However, since the topper has a sticky feel to it and grips fabric, I was pleased to find that no matter how much I tried to shift around on the side, I wasn’t able to slide it off the bed, even slightly. I often find that keeping toppers in place is tricky, and they tend to shift around. That’s not the case with this one.  

Test 4: Breathability and coolness

This cooling mattress topper features many quarter-inch perforations that travel through to both sides. I didn’t feel that it was any warmer than my regular mattress. I did test it during the winter, but since the topper is supportive and I didn’t sink deeply down into it, I found it to be fairly breathable.

Cleaning and maintaining the Turmerry latex mattress topper

Turmerry recommends using the best mattress protector you can afford with your topper since a mattress protector can be easily washed. The company also recommends periodically allowing the topper to air out in a well-ventilated area and rotating it at least twice a year. 

According to Turmerry, you can use baking soda (get it cheap from Amazon Fresh) to refresh and deodorize your mattress topper. Spot cleaning with white vinegar (available at Amazon) can help to clean up liquid spills. It’s important to avoid using strong detergents, bleach, and solvents, which can damage the latex foam. 

I was also able to find some basic information on Turmerry’s website, and the site also has some instructions for cleaning a mattress topper.

What to consider when choosing a pillow

Follow these five simple steps to find the very best pillow for you, because finding the best match for your needs is essential to sleeping well. You can find more helpful details in our guide to choosing a pillow.

1. How do you sleep?
Side sleepers will need a plump, softer pillow: think cushy fill or softer memory foam. Stomach sleepers will need firmer, thinner pillows to hold their necks in perfect alignment. Back sleepers can find comfort on both sides of the spectrum with a medium-soft or medium-firm pillow or even foam pillows that align with the contours of their necks.

Think about where your pillow will sit beneath your head while you sleep. If you prefer having it fully beneath your head, you'll have the best success with a low- or medium-loft pillow. If you sleep with your pillow only partially beneath your head, you may want a pillow with a higher loft to feel supported.

2. How thick do you like your pillow?
This is called pillow loft, and you might see it written on the side of the packaging. Experiment at home to get your preferred thickness right. Low-loft pillows are around three inches thick, medium-loft pillows are three to five inches thick, and high-loft pillows are at least five inches thick.

3. It's what's on the inside that counts
Natural fillings, which include duck and goose feathers and down, feel soft and luxurious, giving you that extra-cozy sensation of sinking into your pillow. They, along with sheep’s wool, are naturally heat-retaining, which makes them ideal if you get chilly at night. However, both options may need regular fluffing to maintain their loft. These aren't great for anyone who's in constant pursuit of the cool side of the pillow, though. Nor suitable for those who adopt a vegan lifestyle. For an eco-friendly, non-animal-based option, consider fillings such as cotton, buckwheat hull, Kapok seed pod, and bamboo.

If you like the softness of the down but not the heat, or you suffer from allergies or respiratory conditions, you can get synthetic fiber or gel fillings that mimic the feel. Speaking of allergies, pillow manufacturers are very much up to speed with the needs of their users these days, so you can expect to find anti-allergy fillings and coverings for a reasonable price.

For those of us who need more support in bed or just prefer the feel of a firm pillow, there are latex and memory foam to consider. Helpful for sufferers of neck or back pain, they keep the spine and muscles correctly elevated and aligned for deep sleep and a pain-free morning. However, these may have a strong odor, which will disappear once it's had time to 'air' out. On the contrary, if moldability is a priority for you (for example, if you like to fold your pillow in half), then consider a shredded pillow filling.

Usually, most experts would recommend replacing your pillows after two years, unless they have become visibly worn before then. So buying a new pillow ensures you are sleeping on something supportive and clean, which is especially important if you suffer from allergies. Unfortunately, some covers and fill materials will degrade quicker than others so be sure to fluff your pillows regularly, and spot-check them for any wear and tear.

4. Good to know
Some of us prefer to sleep with two pillows (even though sleep experts recommend sleeping with one). Depending on whether you're team one or two — or maybe even three! — consider carefully which one you want to be your top pillow and how deep your pillow will be. Also, if you sleep next to a partner, what you find comfortable might not work for your other half. Your pillow choices can and should be entirely independent. Stomach sleepers might even benefit from sleeping without a pillow.

While not directly connected to comfort, here are some other things to consider:

How easy is it to source a sham? Some pillows (especially those that are aimed at those with back or neck pain), aren't made to fit conventional cases. If you're someone who likes their bedding accessories to coordinate, this may be an issue.

Can you wash pillows in the washing machine? The good news is that some pillows are so low-maintenance and don't need to be thrown in the washer (only their outer covers do). These removable sleeves often have a zip closure so you can remove and replace them with ease. Specifically, in the case of machine-washing memory foam pillows: don't. In 9 out of 10 cases, it's better to spot clean, hand wash (carefully), and don't even think about tossing it in the dryer. Price: Budgets differ across households, so how much you choose to spend on a pillow is entirely up to you. Duck and goose down requires careful processing, and this is often reflected in the price. On the other hand, polyester and synthetic options are far more accessible to those with tighter purse strings. We'd always recommend investing in your sleep, but we know that not everyone has an unlimited budget for pillows. If you're looking for a deep mattress topper that's cooling and organic — then stop your search. Along with your organic mattress (if you have one), this topper will keep you cool all night long. If you have a mattress that's too firm for you, this is a great buy. 

Our tester Louise used it on her landlord-provided mattress. She's a side sleeper and usually prefers a firmer base, but she noticed that it made her medium-firm mattress feel a lot softer and fresher.

The blend of cross-cut memory foam and microfiber offers superior breathability (versus solid or shredded memory foam toppers) albeit a little lumpy on the first couple of nights. But once the foam has molded to your body it'll feel like sleeping on a cloud.

What I thought of the TEMPUR-Adapt mattress topper

Straight out of the box, the TEMPUR-Adapt mattress topper had a high-quality feel. It was easy to unbox, had minimal off-gassing (that smell when something is new), and I was able to use it the same night I unboxed it. The elastic corner straps kept it secure, and it fitted my mattress well. 

The topper made the bed more comfortable (without buying a new mattress), and I noticed that it greatly reduced pressure points. Though it was very comfortable, it also provided enough support and I didn’t feel it was sinking. I found no noticeable increase in heat, and the topper was altogether an improvement to my mattress. 

Though it’s not ideal for use with taller mattresses, and probably isn’t a great fit for sleepers who prefer a firmer bed, it could be a great choice for those who prefer a softer feel.

Unboxing and setting up the TEMPUR-Adapt mattress topper

The TEMPUR-Adapt mattress topper was shipped in a durable, heavy-duty single box and arrived in excellent shape. The topper was tightly wrapped in plastic and enclosed in a larger plastic bag within the box. It was surprisingly heavy — but once out of the box, it was much easier to carry. 

I immediately noticed there was no instruction manual, but then discovered that the three-step unboxing instructions were printed on a box flap. That design eliminates the need to include any sort of instruction sheet, cutting down on paper waste. 

After removing the topper from the larger plastic bag, I placed it on my mattress. I was able to find the ends of the plastic wrap and easily unwrapped it by rolling the topper. 

Once unwrapped, the topper immediately started to expand. While it was less than an inch thick after unwrapping, within five minutes it had reached its full three-inch height.

The instructions note  the topper can be used the same night it’s unboxed, but may continue to expand over the following 24 hours. I didn’t notice any further expansion after the first few minutes. 

The four elastic corner straps are very easy to use and slipped over a mattress. My mattress is 10 inches high and the straps fit securely. According to TEMPUR-Pedic, the straps fit mattresses up to 13 inches deep, but they wouldn’t fit many of the deeper mattresses that have recently become popular. I found that the topper fits my twin bed very well, with no overhang and no lack of coverage. 

After unwrapping the topper, I could smell a somewhat faint plastic or chemical off-gassing odor. I’m very sensitive to smells and this odor was minimal, especially compared to other toppers and mattresses that I’ve purchased. I unwrapped the topper at 1PM and was able to comfortably sleep on it that night without really noticing the smell. Within 24 hours, the smell had entirely dissipated. 

Using the TEMPUR-Adapt mattress topper

This topper offers a fantastic feel and made a significant improvement in the comfort and support of my mattress. It’s made of TEMPUR-Material™, which is the same material that TEMPUR-PEDIC uses in its mattresses. The material helps to relieve pressure but isn’t so soft that I had any difficulty moving. I found it comfortable to lie on my side, my back, and my stomach, and I could easily move from one position to another. 

The topper also offers decent support. While it’s cushioned, you don’t sink deeply into it, which helps to avoid heat buildup. I felt balanced and comfortable when sleeping on the topper, though I would like to have more support under my legs. I tend to prefer a medium-soft mattress, and while I find the topper comfortable, I could see it being too soft for someone who prefers a medium-firm, or firm mattress. 

I did experience an issue with getting out of bed. My mattress lacks edge support, and adding the topper seemed to make those edges even softer. Since the topper easily compressed under my legs, I felt like I was tipping forward every time I went to get out of bed. That could potentially be an issue for someone who already has difficulty getting out of bed. 

I found that the corner straps securely held the topper in place, and I didn’t have any issues with it shifting. The topper may not be a great fit for taller mattresses, since it adds three inches of height. But it does have the potential to transform a rental mattress.

My bed sheets easily fit over the topper and mattress, but this might be an issue for those with taller mattresses. 

While I didn’t find the topper to be particularly warm, I tested it during the winter, and several reviewers described it as being hot and too soft. It’s great at preventing motion transfer, so it would be ideal for couples who want to prevent sleep disturbances. 

A premium cooling mattress topper is available, but that option is more expensive. However, an $80 upgrade for TEMPUR-Adapt mattress topper with cooling technology might be life-changing for a menopausal woman, a hot sleeper or for someone whose partner gives off heat like a radiator at night.

I tested this twin mattress topper for two weeks. During that time, I didn’t notice an improvement in my chronic back pain, but I was absolutely more comfortable when I got into bed and seemed to be able to fall asleep more easily. 

Cleaning and maintaning the TEMPUR-Adapt Topper

Cleaning the mattress topper is simple as it features a zippered cover that can be completely removed. According to Tempur-Pedic, you can wash the cover in cold water but should avoid using chlorine-based cleaning supplies or harsh chemicals. Air drying is recommended, but you can also machine dry the cover, using your washer-dryer on the cool setting. The topper core cannot be washed or dry cleaned. 

Is the TEMPUR-Adapt mattress topper right for you?

The TEMPUR-Adapt mattress topper can add cushion and some support to mattresses. Its ability to prevent motion transfer makes it ideal for couples, and its excellent pressure relief is ideal for anyone who tends to experience pressure points or discomfort while lying on their mattress. 

That said, this topper is on the softer side, so anyone who likes a firmer mattress might find it to be too soft. While it does provide support and prevents you from sinking completely down into it, it made the edges of my mattress feel less supportive, so some people might have a difficult time getting into and out of bed. 

I have to draw attention to the topper’s 10-year limited warranty, which is a fantastic perk and far longer than most industry warranties. This topper is a great choice for anyone who prefers softer mattresses and who wants to increase the comfort of their mattress. Its corner straps only fit mattresses up to 13” high, so keep that in mind when deciding if this topper is the right fit for your mattress.

How we test mattress toppers

TEMPUR-Pedic sent me the topper and I tested it for two weeks in my house before writing the review. I used the following criteria for the testing process. You may consider the following when wondering how to choose a mattress topper: 

Unboxing: I considered how well the topper was packaged, including the use of sustainable packaging. 

Comfort: I evaluated the topper’s comfort, including how it felt throughout the night. I considered how the comfort and cushion would work for people with different sleeping position preferences, as well as how it affected the ability to move in bed. 

Support: I looked for a topper that was not only comfortable, but was supportive enough to prevent sleepers from completely sinking into it. I considered how it affected the edge support of the mattress. 

Heat: I evaluated whether the topper contributed to heat buildup during the night and considered how breathable it felt. 

Ease of use: I considered factors like how easily I could get into and out of bed, as well as how well the topper stayed in place on my mattress. 

Ease of cleaning: I assessed how easily the topper could be cleaned, including any specific cleaning instructions provided by the manufacturer. 

You may have heard the Helix Midnight Mattress from the brand's social media campaigns and work with content creators. A fan-favorite mattress, The Midnight is described as a medium feel with side sleeper support and pressure point relief. It also comes in Luxe and Elite versions if you're looking to splurge, but I wanted to keep things as budget-friendly as possible without any upgrades. 

As a front sleeper, I slept on this mattress every night, without a mattress topper or additional extras, for over a month to collect as much info as possible. If you're new to the world of hybrid mattresses, they combine the best elements of contemporary memory foam with traditional spring mattresses. The Helix Midnight is no exception and is the best of both worlds.

What I thought of the Helix Midnight Mattress

This is the best mattress for stomach sleepers, in my opinion. It has everything you need if you're looking for the Goldilocks of mattresses — not too soft, not too hard. As a stomach sleeper, I found it to be incredibly comfortable with some decent support. The hybrid build of memory foam and gentle springs is a great crowdpleaser. It's squishy but with some extra bounce so you don't feel like you're sinking into the mattress at night. The soft material does run a bit warm in the summertime though, so if you a hot sleeper you may want to consider a cooling mattress instead.

Unboxing the Helix Midnight Mattress

The mattress ships compactly in a box and was pretty easy to assemble as I did it single-handed. It is a bit heavy so you may want a friend's support if you're setting it up yourself. It comes compressed in a few layers of plastic which were a little tricky to get off (make sure you don’t slice or knick the mattress while you’re cutting it off). Everything arrived safe and sound with minimal damage to the box.

What is the Helix mattress like to sleep on?

Firmness

The feel is exactly what I was looking for, ranking 5-6 on the firmness scale. The Goldilocks of mattresses, it's not too soft and not too firm. I was used to a very form mattress (which wasn't the most comfortable) so the soft top layer did take some getting used to but it was delightful.

Pressure relief and support

The first thing I noticed after unboxing the Midnight mattress, was how soft and squishy the top layer on. I was nervous it was going to be too soft for my liking but once I actually laid on the bed I was pleasantly surprised with the supportive spring of the wrapped coil base. I was comfy but completely supported. Overall, it's just the right balance for a stomach sleeper like me. 

Helix claims the mattress provides pressure point relief and while I didn’t suffer any major issues before, I certainly felt comfortable and well-supported with no back pain. My partner, a back and side sleeper, also felt supported and never experienced any pain or discomfort.

Breathability and cooling

The only real downside is the temperature it gets up to at night. I'm quite a warm sleeper and we tested this mattress in the middle of the summer with no air conditioning. So while the environment may have been a factor and a pretty fluffy duvet, I got pretty warm during the night. Helix does offer a GlacioTex™ Cooling Pillow Top cover as an upgrade if this is a concern for you but I have not tested it. 

Motion isolation

The padded memory foam top layers also ensure there is no motion transfer while sleeping. My partner drifts right off as soon as he gets into bed, but I'm much more of a night owl. I can be fidgeting around while reading or watching videos and he never felt jostled or disturbed. 

Edge support

This is a medium-firm mattress made up of five layers. The memory foam top layers consist of Helix Responsive Foam and Memory Plus foam. The body shape layer is made up of 1,000 wrapped coils, which are reinforced lengthwise for edge support. It's all wrapped in a super soft Light Breathe knit cover. The mattress ranks 5-6 on the firmness scale. It's CertiPUR-US® Certified and GREENGUARD Gold Certified, with no fiberglass.

Is the Helix Midnight Mattress right for you?

While on the pricier side for a mattress in the box, I really think this one is worth the investment. It has all the best features of both memory foam and coil mattresses — a great compromise if you’re not sure which type is right for you.

The Helix Midnight is right for you if you love a hybrid mattress and you sleep on your side. It's a good option for those who suffer from joint pain or if you fidget at night. It's also great if you live in a small apartment or want a mattress that comes in a box as it's pretty compact and simple to move around.

You may want to reconsider if you sleep warm, as I found it pretty toasty in the summer. If you're on a budget, you can also find more inexpensive options on the market.

What is a floating headboard?

A floating headboard, a.k.a. hanger headboard, does not get attached to your bedframe. Instead, it's fastened to the wall behind the pillows.

POV: You step inside your college dorm room and instantly realize you need more space. As to be expected from a classic college experience, your room is probably going to be super tiny and look as if there just isn’t enough space for what you need. 

The good news is that there’s a simple (and cost-effective) answer to getting more space for organizing your dorm. See: lofting your dorm bed. This will give you plenty of room for storage or to turn it into a cozy area for studying or chilling with friends. 

I’ll level with you here, if you’ve never lofted a dorm bed before it can seem a li'l overwhelming but, honestly, it’s not too bad. The whole process is quick, easy, and actually fairly simple. 

Wondering what steps you need to take in order to (safely) loft your dorm bed? Don’t panic, because we’ve got the lowdown. 

Good to know

Time: 1 hour (this includes the whole process from removing the mattress to putting it back after the bed has been lofted)

Difficulty: Intermediate. (Don't panic, this is only ranked as being harder because you'll have to remove your mattress)

Helpful hint: Ask a friend or your roommate to give you a hand, as this will make the process far quicker, easier, and safer. 

Here's what you'll need

You'll want to choose one of the following kits based on the type of lofted bed you're after. Check in with your college to see if they provide kits or if you're allowed to bring your own risers or frame.

How to loft a dorm bed

 Step 1: Get a lofting kit 

The first step is to get your hands on a lofting kit. You can either ask for one from the college housing office (most colleges offer these but some come with an additional charge) or you can opt to buy one online. Just make sure it's allowed and you select the right choice that'll work with your bed.

Step 2: Remove your mattress

The next step is to slide your mattress off your bed and move it out of the way (try leaning it against a wall). Ask your roommate, a parent,  your resident assistant, or a friend for some help. You definitely don't want to do this on your own.  

Step 3: Turn the bed frame onto its side or lift the legs

Before you can get to work, you need to turn your bed onto its side, so that you have easy access to all four feet. This is another two-person job, and don't try to do it alone! 

If you're using bed risers, you won't need to do this. Simply lift up each corner of the frame in order to slide the risers beneath.

Step 4: Add the attachments to the legs of the bed 

Start by adding the pegs to the legs. Most bed lofting kits come with pegs to add to the base of the legs that can then be used to attach the leg extensions safely onto the bed frame. They should fit easily into the bottom of each leg. When fitting these, it’s important to make sure that everything comes together perfectly and that the pegs and the additional legs fit snugly onto the bed frame. If you're using bed risers, slide these under each leg. 

Step 5: Check the frame and replace your mattress

Get your frame back on its feet or back into position and replace the mattress. Just like that and you have a new and improved bed to get you through the semester!

I've had a lot on my mind recently being a #newlywed. So when I was asked to test the Zamat pillow, I couldn't have been more excited to sleep (and get paid for it). How do I sleep? I call it "recovery position plus." Yes, it's that emergency arrangement, but with a pillow in between my legs. IDK over time, whether this has helped or hindered me. Or, if the creaks and ouchies have just been a part of entering my thirties. Nevertheless, I was totally down to test this new pillow that was inspired by a group of troubled sleepers. Designed in Oregon, could this pillow really be "The American Dream"?

What I thought of the Zamat pillow

First off, I was pleasantly surprised to notice (or you could say not notice) that it didn't have a funky memory foam smell. That said, when I was doing a bit of desk research on Amazon, some customers did say it had a fishy/chemical stench. Luckily, mine wasn't affected by this odor (thank god!).

I felt like it ergonomically "cupped" my rotator cuff and allowed my spine to fully straighten out, without feeling like my shoulders were shrugged or had a camel-style hump. It isn't as voluminous as a perfectly-puffed hotel pillow, but that's to be expected with the 0.8-inch thick insert.

How to use this Zamat pillow

There are different ways to sleep on this pillow, depending on whether you prefer to position yourself on your front, back, or side while you snooze...

Back sleepers should use both sides of the pillow. According to Zamat, the natural traction of the neck and head support can reduce the pressure on the posterior skull, reduce snoring, and improve sleep quality.

Front sleepers should use the wing side of the pillow. But, in this instance, go ahead and drop both your shoulders and arms by the pillow. This will (hopefully) ensure that you don't suffer from any neck stiffness when you wake up.

Side sleepers like me should rest on the wing. According to Zamat, you can rest your entire shoulder (nearest to the pillow) and place your arm on the armrests so that you don't get pins and needles (IDK about you, but my 31-year-old self still freaks out when I get a numb arm!).

What I loved about this Zamat pillow

It's double-lined
The squishy memory foam (more on that later) has two cocoon-like linings. One feels like a cotton sweatshirt, and the other is a li'l thicker (think a quilted cardigan). Both are removable, but Zamat insists that you only need to wash the weightier one. Each has zips for easy removal.

Its cover can be washed
Yup, you can do more than spot clean the outer quilted jacket. Just pop it in the washing machine at a cycle that's between 86–104 degrees Fahrenheit.

It helps with back pain
The Zamat pillow has got curves in all the right places to take any unnecessary strain off of your back, neck, and shoulders. You can cancel that painful sports massage or chiropractor appointment and give this a try first.

It's great for snorers
My husband is a prolific snorer, so rather than whack him over the head with the pillow, I let him use it for the night. Safe to say, the noise coming from his nose was audibly reduced.

What I didn't love about this Zamat pillow

There's a lack of sham options
Though our bedroom is predominantly gray, we like to introduce color, patterns, and texture via our duvet cover, a throw that sits on the end of the bed, and some mustard-colored cushions. Unfortunately, Zamat doesn't have a line of pillowcases (other than the washable quilted outer cover that's provided), so the orthopedic pillow does feel like something out of a nursing home on the bed.

Its memory foam inner is strange
Another thing I wasn't particularly in love with was the texture and finish of the memory foam itself. Tactically, it felt like Play-Doh... no scrap that. Ever made a foccacia? It's got that sticky doughy texture that I should be OK with... but I'm not. On closer inspection, mine looked like The Very Hungry Caterpillar had had its way with it. Once I'd taken the two covers off of it, it was all there looking like a snack (and not in an appetizing way either). PU and polyester aren't the most environmentally-friendly materials to manufacture so it loses kudos for this. But saying that, Zamat says that it can last past the five-year shelf life of a pillow (if properly maintained).

Its inner can't be cleaned
In fact, it's more fragile than I thought. So I wouldn't want this to go head-to-head with my washing machine. Who knows what it'd look like even the most gentle cycles, plus I can see it damaging my appliance if I risked it. No thanks.

Good to know

Delivery: First off — let's talk delivery. Because, I bet like me, you couldn't *wait* for a good night's sleep. The good news is that it arrived within eight days. Which was good considering it came from China to the UK. My contact had provided a live tracking link which allowed me to keep an eye on my package in real-time. JYSK, I'm not sure if that level of communication is as standard, or if it's because I liaised with the PR person to have this product sent to me.

Unboxing: Unfortunately, I don't have a picture or video of me unpacking the pillow. However, what I can tell you is that the pillow itself is shrink-wrapped for ease of delivery. It does initially look a li'l squished in the box but having left it out before bed, it soon unraveled itself.

As with everything we review, we make sure to pair our reviewer and the product we need to review to ensure these two factors will work well togeter. I reviewed this pillow as I often have a little bit of neck pain, which isn't helped by alternating on the sofa/office chair when I work from home.

I would usually change/wash my pillowcases every two weeks, but I wanted to see how gross it could get if you left it. Yes, that is me low-key saying that the cover hasn't been through the washer since I got it, but apart from the teeniest bit of (probably) leftover mascara that my cleanser didn't take off — there's no staining or drool.

From clever lighting to sensory sensations, these are the best TikTok hacks for sleep IMO. Oh and BTW, I’ve also shopped products for the ones that need something special.

1. Spritz sleep spray

I'm such a fan of spritzing sleep spray around my room and my bed. As well as being relaxing, scents can be a clever way to get your brain into the sleep zone. By consistently spraying the same spray around your room and sheets before you sleep, you’ll eventually automatically associate that scent with the idea of going to sleep. So clever! Dr. Teal’s viral sleep spray is a popular option, but I also recommend looking for ones with lavender scents and cotton scents.

2. Wear cozy pajamas 

As Barbie says, you’ve always gotta dress for the occasion. That goes for sleep as well, people. Sure, not everyone will see your cute fit, but that doesn’t matter. Having a quality pair of PJs to put on before you sleep will help you fully relax and feel super comfortable. I recommend looking for ones with silk or cotton, as they’re both soft and breathable. Just make sure not to lounge around the apartment in them though — yes this can be tempting, but you’ve got to save them for slumber to get the full effect. 

3. Turn on a white noise machine

I’m one of those people who has to have background noise. Creaky sounds when it’s silent? NTY! That being said, when I discovered white noise machines, I was a li’l skeptical about how beneficial they actually are. How can noises make sleep better? How?! Well, they do. I love my Homedics one, which is so easy to set up and has a variety of sounds. Or, if you like the look of the DreamEgg in the TT above, our head ecommerce editor Annie Collyer says it's a game-changer.

4. Put on an sleep mask

Turn yourself into a 90s rom-com main character by bagging a sleep mask that you can go to sleep in and dramatically take off in the morning. I struggle to sleep in rooms with any light, so I have found good ol’ sleep masks to be the best way to block out rays. I have both a cooling one and one with lavender, which I find so soothing, but I’ve also got my eye on one that is made to fit around the eyes. Hey, there’s no such thing as too many masks. 

5. Keep your room cool

Let’s face it, there’s nothing cute about a stuffy, hot room. So sweaty, so uncomfortable. Instead, make sure that your room is super cool. This is because your body drops temperature when you’re falling asleep, so by making sure your room is cold already, you can speed up that process. TikToker Lorafied says 68 degrees Fahrenheit works best, but I’m not expecting you to get a thermometer out. If you don’t have AC in your room, try using a fan instead. BTW, you can get it to blow cold air, with a few handy tricks. 

6. And keep your bed cool too

Want to go all-out on the cold vibes? You can get your bed feeling super chill too with the help of one handy buy: A cooling mattress topper. As well as making your bed breathable, cooling mattress pads also help with aches and pains. I’m personally a bit of a night sweater (sorry for the TMI, but it’s true!), so I’m absolutely going to be copying this hack ASAP. 

7. Throw on a weighted blanket

I don’t know about you guys, but I like to know that I’m in bed. I’m talking fully covered, fully snuggled up, and fully ready to sleep. That’s why I’m loving the idea of weighted blankets, which provide comfort and security thanks to the added pressure. Either use them by themselves in hot weather or stack them on top of a duvet insert in cooler weather.

8. Go for two duvet comforters

FYI: This hack has divided SleepTok. Some say it makes sleeping too hot, while others say it makes their bed 10x fluffier. I’m personally on team double duvet, but I do only recommend it in cooler months. This is such a great trick for making the bed feel so much cozier, as well as saving serious cash on heating. If you don’t want two comforters on top of each other, you could also always try having one underneath you and one covering you.

9. Light a candle or two

Did I mention that I’m a big scent lover? Not only do candles look aesthetic AF, but they also give out gorgeous scents that make drifting off super dreamy — just make sure to blow them out before you snooze. Sir Candle Man (what a name) recommends going for ones that are refreshing such as citrus scents, relaxing like lavender, and romantic like amber and rose. Ok, so you’d think that the process of picking out new sheets for your bed would be as simple as strolling into the store and picking out a set of sheets within your price range, wouldn’t you? And yet, the process can be complex and even a lil' overwhelming. 

There are just so many options to choose from. There are different weaves. Various thread counts. A mixture of materials. Ugh. And then there are the sizes — how do you know if a standard-size sheet will fit your bed? You want sheets that are going to last over the years and hold up in the wash but are also within your price range. Who'd have thought shopping for sheets could be so stressful? 

That said, panic not because we've got you on this. To give you a helping hand, we’ve put together a simple guide to all the ins and outs of choosing sheets for your bed and how you can ensure that you select the best ones. 

How to choose the best sheets for your bed

1. Be mindful of fiber content 

So, let's chat fiber. It sounds a little odd but when it comes to sheets the fiber type matters. Different fibers impact the feel and quality of your sheets, so it pays to be selective. 

If price isn’t an issue, you can’t go wrong with 100% cotton sheets (especially as they’re silky soft, and super durable). For an even smoother sleep experience, you could opt to upgrade to Egyptian or Pima cotton, which costs a little more but is even softer and more durable. 

For a lower-cost option, look for cotton and polyester blended sheets. These tend to have a more synthetic feel but are more durable and longer lasting, plus are less prone to creasing. 

2. Thread count isn’t everything 

You naturally assume that the higher the thread count the better quality the sheets, right? I hear you on this. But that isn't necessarily the case. 

So, when it comes to shopping for new sheets, you need to understand that some sheets with high thread counts have actually been artificially inflated, with the material being crafted from triple-ply fibers rather than single-ply. This means that for each fiber used the thread count triples — so a sheet that has 300 fibers in it, would be counted as a 900 thread count sheet.

Obvi, some high thread count sheets are the real deal, but knowing how to spot the differences is a must. Luckily, by reading the label you should be able to determine whether a sheet's thread count has been artificially inflated. 

3. Take weaves into account 

It’s also a good idea to take into account the different sheet weaves and what they mean in terms of the feel and comfort of your sheets. The two most common weave options are percale or sateen. Percale is a grid-like weave, while sateen is a satin weave that feels silkier and smoother. 

In terms of which weave is best, it's a personal preference. If you currently have sheets that you love, determine what weave they use and opt for new sheets with the same weave. 

4. Think about mattress depth (not just standard sheet sizes) 

A common mistake that many people make when it comes to choosing sheets is assuming that a standard-sized sheet will fit their mattress depth. The fact is that newer mattresses, especially mattresses in a box, tend to be deeper than traditional mattress designs, which means that standard sheet sizes don’t always work. So, if you have a deep mattress or you have a mattress topper on your mattress, it’s important to take those factors into account before buying sheets. To combat this issue, some people choose to size up their bedding or opt for deep-fit sheets instead of regular fit.

As a writer, I only manage to get six hours of sleep, as I tend to cultivate some of my best ideas at night and spend the majority of my time on my phone researching. There are tons of reasons you may be lying awake at night — racing thoughts, restless energy, or even just sleeping without a pillow could all be culprits.

One of my goals for this year is to be able to sleep eight hours straight and not experience any trouble throughout the night. While I work this out for myself, I thought it'd be worth providing readers with tips on how to sleep throughout the night for eight hours without a hiccup, too 

With this in mind, I spoke to certified clinical sleep health specialist (CCSH) and CEO of The Solution is Sleep LLC Dr. Angela Holliday-Bell about why many of us can’t sleep properly. She explained several factors that could affect our sleep and offered loads of good tips on how to better our sleeping patterns. 

Reasons you may not be sleeping

1. Consuming Too Much Caffeine 

Caffeine is widely used for its stimulating properties, like fresh, homemade coffee. The issue with caffeine when it comes to sleep is that it has a long half-life of about five hours. The half-life is the amount of time it takes for half the amount consumed to be cleared from your system. So, after five hours, half the amount of caffeine is still in your system, and after ten hours a quarter of the amount is still in your system, and so on. So if you consume it too close to bedtime,  it can be affecting your ability to fall asleep. 

Recommendation

Holliday-Bell recommends limiting the amount of caffeine you consume to the smallest effective dose and try not to have any after 12pm.

2. Blue Light Exposure  

Light is the strongest factor influencing your circadian rhythm. The blue wavelength of light in particular has the strongest alerting effect on your circadian rhythm. This means that exposure to blue light before bed causes you to feel alert and also delays your natural melatonin release. 

Recommendation

As electronics like smartphones, televisions, and computers are rich in blue light, Holliday-Bell feels it’s best to avoid use of these products within one to two hours of your bedtime.

3. Not Having a Consistent Bedtime Routine 

A bedtime routine is a great way to promote relaxation and calm your mind in preparation for sleep. Keeping a consistent routine also helps your brain to connect that routine to sleep, making it a more efficient process for you. 

Recommendation

The best way to help you get sleepy at the same time each night is to keep a consistent bedtime and routine. You can even replicate a professional turn-down service, to recreate a luxe hotel at home.

4. Alcohol Consumption 

Many people choose to use alcohol as a nightcap because of its sleep-inducing properties. While it’s true that alcohol is initially sedative, as it makes you sleepy,  it is very quickly metabolized or broken down and after that point becomes a stimulant. Therefore, drinking alcohol too close to bedtime often leads to broken, poorer quality sleep. 

Recommendation

Holliday-Bell recommends limiting alcohol consumption within three to four hours of bedtime.

5. Temperature too High in Your Sleeping Space 

Your body temperature has to decrease by one to three degrees F in order to facilitate the transition to and maintenance of sleep. If your sleep environment is too warm, it can lead to poorer quality sleep and middle-of-the-night wakings. 

Recommendation

Holliday-Bell recommends keeping your room’s temperature between 62 to 68 degrees F (the optimal range per research) or at least decreasing your room temp by one to two degrees from what’s comfortable for you during the day.

6. Light Entering the Room at Night 

Again, light is the strongest factor influencing your circadian rhythm causing you to be alert. Even if your eyes are closed, your retinas can detect light in the room.

Recommendation

Holliday-Bell suggests using blackout curtains/blinds or a blackout sleep mask to keep ambient light from interfering with your sleep at night.

7. Tossing & turning or Aches & Pains 

This could be due to improper support from your current mattress. The best mattress to sleep on varies depending on several factors such as sleeping position, weight, and personal preference. 

Recommendation

It’s important to have a mattress that provides the proper support and keeps your spine in a neutral alignment while you sleep. If you can’t get comfortable at night or are waking up with aches and pains, it may be time to update your mattress.

8. Racing Thoughts 

Racing thoughts are a common reason that people struggle to fall asleep at the beginning or middle of the night. 

Recommendation

One way to help manage these thoughts is to keep something called a “worry diary.” You do this by setting aside a 10-15 minute period every day (ideally at least one to two hours before your bedtime) to write down all of your worries and to-do list. This gives your brain ample time to process these thoughts during the day so that it’s not trying to do that while you sleep at night.

9. Lack of a Morning Routine 

What you do during the day has a significant effect on how you sleep at night. 

Recommendation

To promote good sleep, it’s important to wake up at the same time every morning to reinforce your circadian rhythm. It’s also helpful to get natural sunlight exposure within one hour of waking to also reinforce your circadian rhythm and promote nighttime melatonin release and adding physical activity to your morning routine can help promote deeper quality sleep.

If your mattress is the problem but you’re not able to afford to replace it, or your landlord won’t cough up the dough for a new one, investing in the best mattress topper your money can buy could be the answer. 

Wondering what a mattress topper is? These nifty bedroom items add an extra layer of comfort, so even if your mattress is a little worse for wear, a topper could be a sleep game-changer. They boost comfort, enhance support, and cover any bumpy or sagging areas. Most consist of a thin layer of foam or other material.

Try a mattress topper

It’s usually better for back and stomach sleepers to have slightly thinner pillows, while side sleepers usually need thicker pillows. Flip your mattress

Buying the best bed or the best headboard can be expensive, hence why I've kept this point last. But if you're sleeping without the proper infrastructure in place, it's time to invest. When choosing a bed, pick an option that your mattress sits comfortably within. Also, if you have the budget, go for an upholstered or storage bed. These tiny details will make a world of difference (especially in a small bedroom where the best storage headboard can help to declutter your scheme).

But when you unwrap your sheets and adorn your bed with them you’re left feeling disappointed as they just don’t feel as silky or smooth as you’d expected.  

You're probably wondering what’s gone wrong. The chances are that you’ve picked out bedding with a high thread count that’s made from poor-quality fibers (yep, that's a thing), which is why your sheets don't feel as smooth as you'd expect. 

Listen up besties, if you’re shopping for new sheets, understanding thread count and the ins and outs of what constitutes quality bedding is crucial. Else, you might just end up forking out for some hella expensive linens that aren’t even that comfortable.

What is thread count?

Let’s dive into it. So, thread count is the total number of yarns per square inch of fabric. And, usually, a high thread count means finer yarns have been used as you can fit thinner yarns into a square inch than you can with a thicker (or coaster) yarn. What this has led to is the concept that a higher thread count indicates higher-quality sheets that are softer and more durable. 

But, that said, it’s not just the thread count that matters. Other factors, such as the quality of the fiber and the weave of the fiber also impact the quality of the sheets, like with cozy bamboo sheets. So, while it’s easy to get hung up on thread count, it’s important to realize that it isn’t the exclusive factor in high-quality bedding. 

What is a high thread count?

What constitutes a high thread count is somewhat subjective. For some, a thread count of 500 or more is considered to be high, while for others sheets with a thread count of 1500 or higher are counted as a high thread count. 

Why does thread count matter?

Traditionally, thread count mattered because the higher the thread count, the higher quality the sheets were considered to be. That said, what it’s important to appreciate is the fact that while higher thread count sheets can be of a higher quality than their lower thread count counterparts, thread count is not always an indicator of quality. 

You see, the quality of the fibers used is also important in relation to how nice the bedding feels. So, while it’s true that bedding with a thread count of 500 may feel comparably better than a set of sheets with a thread count of 200 if both sets of sheets used the same yarn. Whereas, if the lower thread count sheets used a higher quality yarn than the high thread count sheets, you may find that the lower count sheets are actually the better option. 

It’s also important to understand that there are some downsides to very high thread count sheets, where packing too many fibers into the fabric can sometimes impact airflow, resulting in sheets feeling heavier and less breathable. 

In extremely high thread counts (such as 900 or more), it’s important to be aware that the thread count may be inflated with the use of double or triple-ply threads, which are often of lower quality. But with each thread featuring two or three fibers, they’re counter two or three times in regards to thread count, resulting in a set of sheets that have a thread count of 900 but are actually of a lower quality than a set with a thread count of 300. 

What does it mean for bedding?

When choosing new bedding, it’s important to look at a range of factors, not just thread count. Yes, thread counts can be a good indicator of quality but this isn’t always the case. You'll want to make sure you can wash your sheets regularly while keeping the quality intact.

So, it pays to look at the material the sheets are made from and the fiber content of the material. You’ll find that 100% cotton weaves are always a great option, especially when compared to artificially manufactured materials (like polyester and polycotton) that tend to be of a lower quality regardless of thread count. 

I love my super-comfy pillow. Resting my sleepy li’l head on it and scrolling through TikTok with a hot choc is a highlight of my day. But what happens if you end up in a sitch when you’re pillowless? It can happen, and you’ve gotta be prepared.

I’m talking crashing on your friend’s floor after a night out, rolling up to an Airbnb that isn’t all that, and even just falling out with your boo and sleeping on the couch. There are lots of reasons why you may want to sleep without a pillow. You may even just want to give sleeping a go without one, just to test out any potential health benefits. That’s okay too!

I’ve spoken to experts to find out why you might want to sleep without a pillow, the pros and cons of doing so, and how it can affect your sleep and body. So, whether you’re hunkering down for a night’s sleep sans cushioning or debating doing so, you’ve got all the deets you need.

Why sleep without a pillow?

Okay, so it turns out there are lots of reasons why someone may want to sleep without a pillow, besides necessity. “Some pillows can be too thick, pushing the head and neck forward or to the side which can lead to neck pain or headaches,” explains Dr. Kevin Lees, director of chiropractic operations at The Joint Chiropractic. “Stomach sleepers may feel any pillow is uncomfortable, putting pressure on their neck and making it more difficult to breathe.”

In fact, for stomach sleepers, it can be a pretty good idea. “The main reason to sleep without a pillow is that it could help improve sleep posture for stomach sleepers,” says Jill Zwarensteyn, certified sleep science coach at Sleep Advisor. “Not using a pillow can help maintain the natural shape of the spine and neck, preventing the head and neck from curving upward, which could otherwise lead to neck strain.” 

Pros of sleeping without a pillow

Sleep on your tum? Listen up. There are lots of good reasons for you to sleep without a pillow. Lees says: “Stomach sleepers often twist their neck to allow for easy breathing, and a pillow will also push the head and neck backward, increasing pressure on the lower neck and upper back.” Because of this, he says that sleepers may feel less neck pressure and breathe easier without a pillow.

There’s also a host of benefits for other sleepers as well. “Opting for no pillow can offer improved comfort, better breathing, reduced tension on pressure points, and decreased friction to cause facial wrinkles and acne,” adds Carlie Gasia, certified sleep science coach at Sleepopolis.

Cons of sleeping without a pillow

Unfortunately, not every kind of sleeper can benefit from going without a pillow. Both back and side sleepers need support to help keep the spine in a neutral position. “Not having any support can lead to the neck bending to the side or back at an awkward angle,” Lees tells me.

If you sleep in these positions and sleep without a pillow, you could injure yourself and have a poor night’s sleep. “You’ll be more at risk of neck pain, stiffness, and headaches without a pillow because of the unevenly distributed pressure on your neck muscles,” adds Dr. Chris Winter, a sleep health expert at Mattress Firm. “To help keep your neck and spine neutral, it’s best to use a pillow.” Got it.

How can sleeping without a pillow affect a person’s health?

Depending on how you sleep, sleeping without a pillow could improve sleep posture and, in turn, improve sleep quality. “This can result in a person waking up feeling more rested, with reduced neck pain,” explains Zwarensteyn. “If this better posture is achieved without a pillow, you should feel relief in the back and neck where a pillow was causing strain.”

Good neck support is a key sleep aid, which a pillow def provides for a lot of people. “If the neck isn’t properly supported, this may lead to neck pain, headaches, shoulder pain, or even radiation and numbness in the arms,” says Lees. “Some may find sleeping on their back without a pillow makes it difficult to breathe.” He also adds that pressure on the joints in the neck can also lead to more chronic problems over time, including inflammation and spasms. That does not sound like fun.

Comfort is also one of the most important things for a good night’s sleep, and should keep in mind when experimenting without a pillow. “Ultimately, it’s about what makes you feel most comfortable and allows you to sleep in a healthy posture,” adds Zwarensteyn.

Stomach sleepers can definitely benefit from sleeping without a pillow, as it has a host of advantages for them. For those who sleep in other positions though, it can have some major side effects. Luckily, these come from not having a pillow long-term, so if you only have to deal with one night without one, don’t stress. Helpful hints: Whatever you do, don’t strip your bed before leaving the house with the intention of making it when you get home, because I can promise you that when you walk back into your bedroom (having forgotten you’ve pulled the sheets off before you left) you’re going to seriously regret it. If you’re removing your bedding, always make sure to re-make the bed right away. 

How to make a bed

Step 1: Get your bed linen ready  

Make the process easier by getting everything that you’ll need to make your bed ready. Grab the clean sheets, bedding, and anything else that you’ll need. I like to keep entire bedding sets inside their matching pillowcase to make them easier to spot and so that I don't end up with mismatched pillowcases, because ugh. You can actually buy bed sheet organizer bands, though — these Amazon ones went viral on TikTok and are so handy.

Step 2: Strip the bed 

Next, remove the old bedding from the bed. First, take the duvet cover off the comforter (if there is one). Then, remove each pillowcase, the top sheet, and the fitted sheet. Place the used bedding into your dirty laundry basket, ready to be washed. 

Step 3: Add a fitted sheet 

The great thing about fitted sheets: no need for tucking. All you’ve gotta do is slip the sheet over each corner of the mattress and you're done. To make getting the sheet on the mattress easier, work on hooking one corner of the sheet over one corner of the mattress at a time. Start with the bottom two corners, and then move onto the top two. In order to fit the sheet over the entire mattress, it’s important to make sure that it’s properly spread out. Oh, and FYI, if you’ve got a deep mattress, you may want to opt for a deep fitted sheet (like this one from DeaLuxe at Amazon) or go up a size for ease (and comfort). 

Step 4: Add a flat sheet (optional) 

Whether or not you add a top sheet is a judgement call. Some love it, others hate it. If you’re someone who loves the feel of sliding between two crisp sheets (think: major hotel vibes), then a top sheet is a total must. But how do you add a top sheet to your bed? 

Okay, so you wanna start by spreading the top sheet over the fitted sheet and aligning the hem of the sheet with the top of the mattress, making sure that the sheet is spread evenly over the bed. Oh, and don’t forget to check that there’s the same amount of sheet hanging over both sides. Next, tuck the sheet at the bottom and top of the mattress underneath it, ensuring it’s smoothly tucked and pulled tight. Then, tuck each edge underneath the mattress, again pulling the sheet tight and making sure the material is smoothly tucked and isn’t rumpled up under the mattress. 

You can tuck this sheet in with your hands, obvi, but some people like to use a coat hanger to help. Otherwise, you can actually buy a bed-making tool (like this wooden one from Amazon) which helps you to tuck in your sheets as tight as you can, without risking breaking a nail. IYKYK.

Step 5: Put your comforter cover on  

The next step is to add a new comforter cover (if you're in need of a new duvet insert, don't miss our expert guide). For this, some people opt to simply open the cover and stuff the comforter inside it, slowly pushing each corner of the comforter to the edges of the cover, before shaking it out. 

Others prefer to use the inside-out method. To do so, turn your duvet cover inside out and lay it on top of your comforter, making sure that all the corners and edges are properly aligned. Then, place your hands inside the cover until you reach the top two corners, and grab the matching comforter corners through the material. Once you’ve got hold of the corners of both the comforter and cover, you can then start to pull the cover down over the comforter, turning it back around the right way as you go. Once the entire comforter is encased in the cover and all the edges and corners are aligned, shake it out and lay it on the sheets. 

Step 6: Add your pillowcases 

The next step is to add new pillowcases. To put the pillowcases onto your pillows (if you need new pillows — they only last two years max FYI — our best pillows guide can help) you can either stuff the pillows into the open cases or you can use the inside-out method above. Once you’ve put fresh cases on, add your pillows to the top of the mattress, stacking one on top of the other. 

Step 7: Add a throw blanket

Once the rest of your bed is made, you can then add your throw of choice. Lay the blanket out on the bed and pull it up to just below the pillows, and then carefully tuck the base of the throw under the bottom of the mattress (along with the sheets and the bottom of the comforter). Pull the sides down, making sure that each side of the bed has an equal amount of throw hanging from it. 

Step 8: Turn the bedding down

Finally, take the top of the throw, duvet, and top sheet and carefully fold them over, pulling around five inches of the material down the bed and neatly folding it over. 

FAQs

Hands up if washing your mattress protector isn't part of your bi-weekly bed cleaning routine. Yup, most us of might not clean our mattress protectors as often as we should. And when you do, you likely just throw it in the washing machine. But whether you wash your mattress protector once a week or once a month, it doesn't matter if you don't know how to do it properly.

Mattress protectors are designed to guard your bed against accidental spills, stains, and crumbs (breakfast-in-bed lovers you know who you are), as well as the more nasty bacteria, dust mites, and bed bugs. So even if it looks clean, you can imagine how grimy they actually get. You shouldn't just be looking for significant marks, fake tan stains, and odors to trigger a little TLC. 

To help you keep your bed as clean as poss, I've spoken to the experts and put together a simple five-step guide, including everything you need to know and a few useful tools, because hygiene, obvi.

How to wash a mattress protector?

Good to know

The good news is that you don't need to take your mattress protector to a specialist service or spend money on new cleaning supplies, you just need a few household items, and I'm presuming you have a washing machine.

Note: Prior to throwing your bedding in the washer, you'll want to check it for any damage, like holes or tears. Using your washing machine to clean your cover without glancing over it first could impair the item and may even break your appliance in the process. 

Here's what you'll need

• A handheld vac or a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment
• Mild laundry detergent, like Method's eco-friendly detergent
• A soft cleaning cloth (from Amazon)
• Your washing machine 

1. Remove dirt and debris

The first step to cleaning your mattress protector is to strip the bed and clean it manually of any dirt and debris. Yes, pretty self-explanatory, but also quite crucial. "This includes sheets, blankets, pillows, and anything else that might be on the surface," says Martin Seeley, CEO and founder of Mattress Next Day. "Then you can use a cordless vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to gently remove any crumbs that may be on the surface." Think pet hair, dust, and dirt from grimy feet.

2. Spot clean and pre-treat stains

Next, you'll want to do any pre-stain treatments. "Once you've vacuumed the surface, you can start spot-cleaning any areas that seem to be particularly dirty," says Seeley. "You can use a mild detergent and a soft cloth for this." 

Why? "If there are serious stains, it’s better to work on them before throwing the mattress protector into the washing machine," adds Alex Savy, a certified sleep science coach and the Founder of SleepingOcean.com. "If you're removing blood from bedding, the stain needs to be pre-soaked in cold water mixed with a bit of salt. When dealing with urine stains, it’s better to soak the mattress protector in a mix of lukewarm water, dish soap, and half a tablespoon of ammonia solution."

Tony Klespis, a certified sleep science coach and sleep accessories editor at Mattress Clarity says that you can "use a mixture of equal parts hydrogen peroxide, dish soap, and water in a spray bottle, and simply spray this on your mattress protector and blot it out to tackle stains."

3. Target lingering odors with baking soda

If your mattress protector is particularly smelly, Klespis recommends using "baking soda to clean and get rid of any odors.'' Simply sprinkle it over the surface of the mattress cover and spray it with water before leaving it to soak for a good few hours — we love Arm & Hammer's Pure Baking Soda which you can pick up from Amazon. 

4. Machine wash (on the right setting)

If you have a washing machine, then great, you can easily put your protector in the drum with the rest of your bedding (if they're the same color, of course). 

Just like you'd check the labels on your clothing when doing laundry, you should also do your due diligence when washing your mattress protector. Depending on the brand and type, there will be different care instructions you'll want to follow in order to maintain its quality. The label will tell you the temperature and which drying cycle will work best. Otherwise, Seeley advises using a "gentle cycle and mild detergent." Make sure to avoid using any bleach or overly hot water, especially if you have a waterproof mattress protector, as this might damage the fabric and break down its protective plastic layers. 

If you don't happen to have a washing machine, then no problem. You can hand wash a mattress protector, too. In fact, Brad Hall, co-founder and CEO of SONU Sleep actually says a cold water wash is better. "You want to clean your mattress protector carefully because of the important job it does," notes Hall. "Hand washing your mattress protector in cold water is the best way to tackle tough stains."

5. Let it air dry completely

Our experts state that no matter which method you choose to wash your mattress protector, you should make sure it is completely dry before putting it away or back on the bed. Once it's all washed, "let it air dry completely before fitting it back onto your mattress in order to prevent bacteria buildup," says Hall. And don't use a dryer, if possible. Hall also adds that the heat from the dryer could not only "shrink your mattress protector, but also deteriorate the moisture-wicking elements a mattress protector needs to do its job." Similarly, don't iron your mattress protector (it shouldn't be too wrinkly anyway), as the excessive heat will damage the waterproof lining.

Most mattresses come with a cover. Whether you bought yourself a brand new bed (exciting!) or moved into a new place with one provided, it's more than likely your mattress came wrapped in a protective cover. It might be the fixed kind you can't remove, or maybe your landlord put a mattress protector in place. Either way, there should be some sort of layer between your bottom sheet and your bed — if not I can list plenty of reasons to buy a mattress protector. 

But can you wash a mattress cover? Over time spills from your morning coffee, sweat (gross ik), and general build-up of bacteria will mean your mattress cover can get grimy. Fake tan girls, you can't say you don't see the faint orange stain seeping through from your sheets every time you change them? The short answer is yes. 

Whether your mattress cover is non-removable, padded, or made of plastic, it's important to keep it clean. Here's everything you need to know about whether you can wash your mattress cover, and how, according to an expert.

Can you wash a mattress cover? 

Don't take it from me, certified House Cleaning Technician (HCT) and mattress consultant at mattressive.com Hugo Guerrero, confirms "it's highly advisable to wash a mattress cover as it collects sweat and bacteria overnight. It can also trap dust and collect dead skin should your fitted sheet move out of place. However, the washing process will differ depending on the type and material of the mattress cover."

Typically memory foam and hybrid mattresses will come with a fixed mattress cover that keeps the layers in place. And while you can't simply bung this one in the machine, you can still keep it clean. To do so Guerrero suggests to "remove your bedding, and sprinkle baking soda generously on the mattress cover." If you're feeling a little ~extra~ you can add an essential oil too. Let this soak on the bed for as long as possible, and then vacuum the residue with your fave handheld vac. Enjoy a clean and fresh mattress, easy.

Honestly: a mattress topper can totally transform your sleep. No, it won't take away your work stress or get your roommate to turn their music down, but it will up the comfort levels on your current bed. You might be laying on an old mattress your mom got you way back when, or perhaps yours was provided to you by your landlord and you just can't get along with it. Either way, it's not the mattress of your dreams. But it could be. 

Obvs, it is important to do your research before buying a mattress topper, because even though these bby's might be a fraction of the price of a new mattress, choosing the wrong one could be costly. There are lots of mattress topper types, materials, and thicknesses to think about — get the most amazing option for you, and you can recreate the comfort of a brand new bed, for less. 

To take your bed from lumpy to lush ASAP, I've spoken to industry experts and put together a simple six-step guide with some of my top mattress toppers to help narrow down your search. 

1. What's on the inside matters

There are lots of types of mattress toppers to choose from, and the one you choose will come down to personal preference — memory foam can be a bit of a love/hate material. 

Not everyone is so set on what cushioning they'd like to sleep on. And deciding is not as simple as giving it a squish with your hand or bouncing on a bed and judging whether you like it. The material of your topper matters when it comes to allergies, support, and most of all, whether you're wanting a topper to pretty much replace your mattress, or simply add a pillowy top to one you find too firm (and visa versa).  

If you get the sniffles at night, you'll want to stay away from natural fillings and opt for a memory foam mattress topper instead. But if you're wanting a super-soft topper to transform your hard sleep surface, a feather or down-alternative option will get you cloud-like sleep. Something in between? A hybrid obvs.

• Memory foam mattress toppers are the most popular choice. It molds to your body's shape and gives plenty of support, making it perfect for side sleepers or anyone with back pain. They're usually the thickest and therefore more likely to transform your current bed to the point where you forget what it felt like before.
• Down-alternative / microfibre toppers will simply up your comfort levels to cloud-like. If you want the feeling of sleeping on a load of tiny pillows, a polyester-filled topper will feel soft to the touch, without the occasional stab of a feather poking through.
• Feather and down are luxurious topper fillings, making them both the most expensive and plush to the touch. If you can afford one and aren't worried about any allergies, then it makes sense to invest in this mega mattress upgrade. 
• Hybrid mattress toppers are constructed with one memory foam layer, and one feather or down-alternative layer, so you'll get softness and support for the best of both worlds. If you don't have any particular needs when it comes to sleep, you can't go wrong with a hybrid. 
• Latex toppers are putting non-toxic materials on the map. Ideal for eco-lovers and allergy sufferers alike, it's better for the environment and for you. Growing in popularity, latex is found to be a very durable material that can be expected to support you soundly for years. They tend to be on the firmer side.
• Organic mattress toppers cover a range of natural material types, like cotton, wool, hemp, and flax, all of which do not include polyurethane foam. Organic mattress brands should have an alternative to the chemical fire retardants that are used in other mattresses and may feature vegan options as Avocado or Saatva do.

2. Figure out your sleep style

Choosing a mattress topper according to how you rest is the easiest way to increase comfort levels.

PS: The pillow you sleep on will also impact your sleep position. It might be worth looking into how to choose a pillow for the ultimate sleep set-up. For now, see which firmness rating you should choose based on your sleeping position: 

• Side sleepers are prone to experiencing achy joints, especially around the hips and shoulders due to poor spinal alignment. See whether your knee overlaps the other or sits on top. Opting for a softer mattress topper you can sink into is the way to go, with medium-soft being the most recommended comfort grade. 
• Stomach sleepers might experience sore pressure points in the ribcage, knees, and elbows, as well as "general spinal discomfort." In order to alleviate this, you will need to find a firm sleep surface that supports you but also cushions in those sensitive areas. 
• Back sleepers are recommended a middle-ground mattress for maximum comfort: not too soft, not too firm. In the words of Goldilocks, make sure your bed is "just right" in order to hold you tight in all the right places.

Thickness

Mattress toppers can range in thickness, some adding a thin layer of cushioning, others adding a good few inches to totally transform your bed — yep, just like a Princess and the pea moment. How thick you want your mattress topper to be, will depend on whether you're wanting your topper to substitute a brand new bed (in which case, the thicker the better), or a softer sleep surface than the one you've already got. The average topper is around three inches, with the thinnest being 1.5 and a super-thick one considered at the five-inch mark. If you are wanting a topper with depth, remember that your bed will be significantly taller, and you'll need to buy a deep fitted/flat sheet, if you haven't got one already. 

4. Any additional sleep needs?

Just the same as it is when choosing a new mattress, getting a mattress topper is far from a one-size fits all approach. As you'll know from experience, it can be hard to get comfy when sleeping alongside a partner or friend. One of you might get back pain, the other might overheat, or even have allergies ⁠— we all have different sleep needs. 

Topper types and different mattress brands may feature special add-ons that cater to more specific needs. We've got your back covered with help from Po-Chang Hsu, MD, who is a medical content expert at SleepingOcean.com. Together we've broken down five common issues and how choosing the right sleep surface can solve them: 

• Experiencing back pain? "When dealing with chronic or frequent pain, it’s best to choose a mattress topper that can offer decent pressure relief," explains Hsu. "Such mattresses typically use adaptive memory foam. The material molds to the sleeper’s body, encouraging tension to spread out evenly and, thus, alleviating pain."
• Allergy sufferer? Consider latex as a filling (if you're not allergic to latex, of course) and designs marketed as hypoallergenic. This refers to a mattress that is made with materials less likely to trigger your sneezes and itches. Memory foam/hybrids will be good for you, too.
• Do you overheat at night? Find a mattress topper made of breathable materials. A big warning here is that memory foam is prone to giving off heat. As Dr. Po-Chang Hsu suggests, "It’s best to choose models that use cooling materials, such as natural latex, breathable cottons, or gel-infused foam, etc."

5.Size

Okay, it may sound simple, but make sure your topper is the right size. By the "right" size, I'm referring to the size of your mattress. Most mattress brands in the US offer topper sizes the same as your mattress, from twin all the way to California king. There are other sizes in-between standard variations that, if ordered incorrectly, may mean your topper will overhang or not be able to be attached properly. You really won't want it to slip around as you sleep. 

6. How much are you willing to spend?

The great thing about mattress toppers is that they are SO much cheaper than investing in a brand-new mattress. Yup, they're still a little costly (the cheapest you could get a *good* topper for is around $100, but there are even more affordable options out there. And honestly: the price to upgrade your sleep massively, without having to totally splurge on a new bed, is impressive. 

A great mattress topper will help your current mattress last longer — whether it's new, or not, and perform as a great substitute until you've saved enough to cash in on the bed of your dreams. If you rent, are in a college dorm or are planning on moving soon, then they're also a lot more convenient than having to heft a heavy mattress Ross from Friends style up a stairwell. 

If you've got your eye on a slightly spendy branded mattress topper, perhaps to go with your current mattress, or to add to the uncomfy one you've had for years, it's worth looking at bedding and mattress sales on RN to get one with a discount. 

Let's get straight to it: My current (8-year-old) mattress is old and tired, much like me after a night of sleeping on it. The foam mattress topper is noticeably supportive, with a medium-firmness and a 1.5-inch depth. Generously sized elastic loops at the corners make it easy to fit on an existing mattress without a struggle and keep the topper on securely without slippage. I found this Saatva topper to have the capacity to turn an old mattress, like mine, into an impressive sleep surface without the expense or effort of getting a whole new one. Honestly: I slept better than ever.

Unboxing the Saatva Foam Mattress Topper

I opened the ~elegantly~ packaged box, removed my older mattress topper, and rolled out the 1.5-inch topper atop my existing mattress. My own mattress is a Casper, FYI, not a Saatva, but these fit on any brand’s beds, blending in seamlessly.

Right away, I noticed the generous size of the elastic bands — one at each corner — which were easy to loop over my existing mattress without a struggle. The fit is stable and secure and doesn’t allow for any shifting once in place. Nice. 

Is the Saatva Foam Mattress Topper comfortable?

Instantly, I could tell a difference with this topper in place. This new foam mattress topper replaced my previous one, which had been more pillowy, made from a down alternative. In comparison, the Saatva foam topper felt much more supportive and genuinely upgraded my sleep surface from lumpy to luxe. It actually elevates sleep to a more hotel-like experience, including the breezy feel of a breathable hotel room, even on an older mattress. I had that new-bed feel without the cost or hassle of a mattress replacement. 

I did experience a few wakeful nights on it, but I attribute these more to my stress levels and getting used to a new type of bed, before anything else. 

Firmness
This 1.5-inch memory foam topper has a medium firmness suited to all sleep positions — especially side sleepers. Because I’m typically a side sleeper, this was just right as the construction hugs and holds my body without me sinking in, or lying right on top. 

Pressure relief and support
The high-density foam used in this topper (at least five pounds per cubic foot, compared with three pounds, more typical of similar foams) does a great job at reducing pressure on the body. It’s supportive and cushioning; it honestly feels like it’s holding my spine and my joints right where they need to be.

Is the Saatva Foam Mattress Topper breathable and cool?

I tested this mattress topper during a cool wintertime period — unseasonably cool for my home city of Los Angeles. So I was looking for temperature regulation, rather than cooling. Still, this mattress topper’s cover is made with naturally breathable and moisture-wicking organic cotton, and I’m optimistic it will fulfill that promise for the hot months soon to come.

Is this the right mattress topper for you?

While this isn't something I struggle with (just yet), foam toppers are recommended for people who deal with back pain or simply cannot get to sleep at night, because they contour to the body which aligns the spine and helps relieve any pressure. As sleeping on your side is also the best position to keep your neck, hips, and knees in line, Saatva state this one is best for side sleepers. But honestly: any sleep position will do, as I find myself sprawling out throughout the night, and still sleeping just fine. 

Invest in this mattress topper if:
You want something organic
Your current mattress is really tired (or uncomfortable)
You need a lot of support

You dislike memory foam
You're on a budget
You want something thick

If you like the sound of Saatva, too much to let it go, firstly, I wouldn't blame you, and secondly, they've got two other topper options you might like. For the sweaty sleepers, their graphite mattress topper seems pretty top-notch, and if you're into anything organic, as you should, they've got a great latex version, too. FYI: these toppers do have a higher price point than the foam topper I tested.

TDLR: What I thought of the Coop Retreat mattress topper

I've tested a few mattress toppers before, and I'm not usually a memory foam lover so I didn't think I would get along with this plush-top option. It's pretty squishy, and my body prefers a firmer sleep surface as a side sleeper. I'll admit that the super puffy pillow top took a few nights to get used to, and it felt a little lumpy, to begin with. 

But, after getting used to it, it has perfectly upped the comfort levels of my standard medium-firm mattress, and I'd recommend it to any renter who wants something cozier than the bed that came with their apartment. It's not thick enough to act as a replacement mattress, especially if your current sleep surface is sinking or you have springs poking out, but I was very impressed with the box construction comfort. 

5-month update:
I've been sleeping on the Coop mattress topper for nearly 6 months now and it's just as comfy as it was when I first put it onto the bed. I have found that after a few months, I have needed to shake out the topper for it to de-bunch. I hardly move when I sleep so for a while there was little bunching or movement in the memory foam, but for someone who tosses and turns in the night, you may have to shake out the squares more often.

When it comes to cleaning, I spot-cleaned it in areas when I come to change the bed and launder the rest of my bedding. It's not been a difficult job but the memory foam does take a while to dry, so I'd recommend using as little liquid as possible when you're washing this mattress topper

Unboxing the Coop Mattress Topper

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the carry bag this topper comes in. It may have been heavy, but it's pretty easy to carry thanks to the handles. The cute peach-colored tote can be chucked over your shoulder. Think of it as your new gym, sorry *bedding* bag. After unzipping the side, I was greeted with a little card with everything I needed to know about the Coop retreat mattress topper, but also with a lot of plastic. 

Yup, I pulled out the topper that was tightly rolled into a burrito, to find it wrapped (more than once over) in thick, non-recyclable plastic packaging. Having tested a few toppers and lots of other bedding items that have come delivered in eco-friendly cardboard packaging, I have to admit, I was disappointed. So much so, I had to take a pic of it.

I laid out the topper on my bed before putting it on, just to get a feel of it. Initially skeptical, as a non-memory foam lover, I had to push around the filling of each quilt to flatten out any lumps that had formed from it being stored. Being accustomed to a flat surfaced mattress, I did question whether I would feel each baffle box construction as I slept and wondered if it might bunch as I tossed and turned in the night. 

I added my deep fitted sheet on top (you'll want to make sure you have a deep pocket sheet) and could see the foam quilts beneath. It also made my bed look pretty huge! I have my Coop Exhale Duvet on top, too, which is a down alternative and gives the look and feel of a thick feather-filled comforter. 

Is the Coop Mattress Topper comfortable?

The first night, I have to admit, took a little getting used to — but not in a bad way. It felt plush and cozy, not what I was used to. In fact, you could say it was a sort of The Princess and the Pea moment, where I climbed atop my bed that was now 5 inches thicker now and rolled around trying to figure out what was wrong with it. 

Nothing, of course. It was actually a whole lot better. So soft and comfortable, the foam adapted to my body to the point where my joints were cradled, cushioned, and supported. I sleep on my side and sometimes suffer from knee aches where my legs overlap. But the small pockets of plush helped. I also had a few of my friends and my boyfriend gives their thoughts when they stayed over. My friend, who sleeps on her back enjoyed the cloud-like cushioning, and I had to LITERALLY drag my boyfriend out of bed in the morning. But let's face it, boys tend to be quite easily impressed when it comes to these things.

Fellow sweaty sleepers, hear me out. It's true, I get hot at night — you certainly wouldn't catch me wearing long sleeves and long pants to bed. And memory foam is known for generating a bit of heat. If you've tried memory foam before, you'll know it's generally not that breathable.

I didn't overheat, but admittedly, the sheer thickness of the topper did make it cozier. What to consider when choosing a mattress bag

• Thickness and durability: Naturally, thicker materials tend to be more durable. For some bags, you’ll be able to see how many millimeters (that’s one-thousandth of an inch) it is. A bag that’s 3 mm to 6 mm should be sufficient for most moves, as it can stand up well to handling and possibly being dragged across surfaces. If it’s 2 mm, that doesn’t necessarily mean you shouldn’t use it, but just be aware it’s less likely to withstand rough handling. These may be better suited for storage in a home or garage.
