What I loved about the Jolie shower head

There's quite a bit to love about Jolie, but I'll make things simple, otherwise I might have you here all day.

The size: Though it might look a little bulky, you'll appreciate Jolie's size once you step under its blast range in the shower. No part of your body goes unbathed, and you'll step out feeling squeaky clean.

What I thought of the sproos! shower head

What attracted me to sproos! is the fact that the founders — who are Brooklyn-based like myself — get being a renter in New York. You want certain amenities, but you're not always able to tailor your place to your needs because of lease restrictions. I'm glad I figured out how to replace a shower head and got to personalize my experience. Plus, it was a nice, modern addition to an otherwise dated bathroom.

Additionally, it felt good knowing there were green features. The shower head boasts a 1.8-gpm (gallons per minute) flow rate, which complies with WaterSense and CalGreen standards in the U.S. Plus, sproos! uses eco-conscious finishes.

What I loved about the sproos! shower head

The handheld capabilities: I enjoyed a thorough rinse and didn't have an ounce of shampoo or conditioner left when I got out of the shower. My hair only feels this good when I leave the salon, and it made my blowout a lot easier. 

The color: I selected white to go with the pink and black tiles I have in my throwback of a bathroom, and it feels like a nice upgrade that I definitely needed.

The size: The shower head itself felt very small, and it seemed as though half of my body wasn't getting wet when I was standing underneath it, no matter how I adjusted it. As much as I enjoyed the handheld option, overall it did not meet my expectations when fastened to the wall. 

The accessories: It's great that there are different add-ons for various needs, but I felt as though I didn't necessarily have use for additional features, and the ones that I did test out in Lookin' Good weren't compatible with the toiletries I use regularly. The add-ons weren't sturdy enough for the collection of shampoos, body washes, and soaps I've accumulated, but I understand this might be a personal situation, and it could be beneficial for others.

I will be the first to admit I'm often intimidated by setups, but the large boxes and abundance of large text written on them added to my fear of getting started. However, once I took a breather and began to place everything together, I realized it wasn't that torturous.

What I loved about the Hello Klean showerhead

Packaging: The showerhead and wrench come in a cardboard box, but what makes this feel super premium is that the main product comes in a calico dust bag. The science behind the brand: I'm a bit of a geek, and my resume (before going into journalism) has a lot of pharmaceutical and medical experience. I *get* biology. The ease of installation: I've already gone over how simple it is to switch out your old head with your brand new one, but honestly — I didn't have to tap my husband on the shoulder (while he was gaming) to "check" my handiwork.

It hasn't clogged up with limescale (yet): Because of the aforementioned science, the showerhead is less likely to be chalked up with calcium carbonate (aka limescale). Obviously, if you neglected to change the filters, I could imagine the hard water scum would build up over the head.

My hair is shinier: OK, so I have had compliments on the shine of my strands before. But friends and family have been quick to try and touch my hair and say nice things. With the showerhead, I've continued to use my "normal" products (a cocktail of Only Curls All Curl Conditioner, Cantu Shea Butter for Natural Hair Sulfate-Free Conditioner from LookFantastic, and Miele pomegranate and honey coil sculpting custard, detangled with a Denman brush (both from Amazon). What I didn't love about the Hello Klean showerhead

Honestly, there isn't much I didn't love about it. But if I were to be nitpicky, here's what I'd feedback to the brand.

Limited color options: Please can we have more showerhead hues? There is only so much people can do when decorating and maintaining their apartment, so it'd be great to have some pastel or neutral options... I'm thinking lilac, pink, and taupe to start.

Wrench material: On Real Homes, we're never going to be fans of plastic. And, I get it... it'd cost a lot more for these to be metal. But it gave me the ick.

Size: It's just a smidge bigger than the showerhead I bought from the supermarket.

How to use the Hello Klean showerhead

I'm telling you. It's so simple, it's self-explanatory. Simply screw off your old showerhead, and screw on the Hello Klean model.

The shower filter is refillable, with each capsule lasting around 13,000 liters of water. In layman's terms (because my water bills are paid by direct debit), it means that if you live in a household of three, it'll last three months, and if you live as a couple, it'll be fine for four months. If you live solo, you'll get six months of use before you need to replace the capsules.

Hello Klean does however offer a subscription where it'll send the refills automatically. Like any decent business, you can cancel and amend this agreement at any time. You just need to set up an account and tell it how frequently you want to be sent packages.

Good to know

I reviewed this product during the summer. Warmer months are usually a little bit kinder to my skin and body. Plus, I haven't had to deal with the tug-of-war between colder temperatures and heating in my home and office. I'm looking forward to seeing if using this showerhead stops my skin from feeling tight and itchy in winter. I'd also like to see if my hair will feel less scarecrow-like than it usually does in the fall.

I'm ashamed to say that I wasn't very good at remembering to clean the showerhead I had before this one. It was clogged with limescale, which probably didn't give my skin a chance at thriving, but let's hope that this new-and-improved one will give me and my bathroom the glow-up we deserve.

How we review high-pressure showerheads

I reviewed this showerhead for a month, using it in my bathroom with the aim of calming the appearance of my KP-affected skin and moisturizing my 3B curly hair. I showered once a day (twice when it was warm) and washed my hair around six times during this 30-day period. 

We have two showerheads in my shower-over-bath setup, so I was able to compare these to the Hello Klean showerhead. I did also look at feedback from customers on the Hello Klean site, as well as Cult Beauty (one of its third-party suppliers) to see if I resonated with some of the comments they made. And lastly, watched tons of TikTok/Instagram videos about the product, as well as read comments... because we all know that social media can be unhinged at times.

As with everything we review, we make sure to pair our reviewer and the product carefully. I reviewed this showerhead because I have dry, problematic skin and (sometimes) uncontrollably frizzy curly hair. According to research, both of these issues can be aggravated by hard water, so it made sense for me to try the Hello Klean showerhead.

I'm of that age now where I have to get my roots tinted every six to eight weeks, so I'll be updating this review to let you know if the softer water has an effect on my hair in this regard. Apparently, it can keep blonde babes looking brighter too, so they won't necessarily have to reach for the purple shampoo to lessen the risk of dullness.

Of all the boring things in an apartment, a shower head sits right up there  — or so I thought. This was my belief until the Hai Smart Showerhead decided to knock on my bathroom door and prove me wrong.

I'll be honest, I don't love showering. Not in a gross way and I do shower obviously, but it's just never been an enjoyable experience for me. It feels like a chore and I hate being cold before, during, and after. Shower heads have always just blended into the background. They often spray out a disappointing drizzle or blast you with hard water that leaves you and your hair feeling shaken and fragile. They're not the cutest fixtures either. All of this was the case until Hai said "ahem, look over here!"

Are you also a shower head skeptic? Unfazed by the less-than-impressive stream that stares back at you? Hai won't stand for it. Here are all the deets that converted me. 

What I thought of the Hai Showerhead

I've served my time with awful shower heads. In one apartment, I dealt with constant cold water and a stream with pressure akin to a broken water fountain. In other rental, my overly powerful shower came off the wall the night before a flight and not even the night manager knew what to do. In between these experiences was a mix of mediocre options, or shower heads so bland I didn't bother to notice them. 

The Hai shower head initially caught my eye for two reasons: the soft, glowing indicator light on its handle and the shower Infusions available to add within the shower head system. What was that snazzy little dot of light? And shower steamers built in to your bathroom? Yes, please.

I tested it out that night. The little indicator light flickered on — which is used to tell you when the water is warm and when you've hit your water limit — and I had a little too much fun sliding the pressure button and testing out the mist and rain options.

Unboxing and installing the Hai Showerhead

Upon arrival, everything was boxed neatly in cardboard and a splash of cobalt blue. One box held the shower head itself and the other had the shower Infusions. There was very little plastic, save for a bag or two.  

At first, I tried to remove my old shower head without any tools. It was jammed on there, so as previously mentioned, I did have to buy a wrench to get it off. This won't be the case for everyone, but it is good to know. Once I had the wrench, everything went seamlessly. I twisted off my original model and then simply spun on the new shower head. When I first installed it, I forgot the Fuse compartment, but it was a breeze to add back on. It took me maybe 10 minutes total to do it all. The instruction booklet was short and sweet, but helpful. I was also happy that I didn't have to ask my landlady (because no permanent damage or work was being done) or hire a plumber! It's a renter's dream. 

How to use the Hai Showerhead

This Hai shower head is just as user-friendly as any other. Once you've installed it with their handy and easy-to-read DIY instruction manual, you use the handles in your shower like you normally would. Then you have a few other features:

The slider — With your thumb or finger, you can slide this button on the handle up and down to adjust the water pressure.

The Fuse — This cool little compartment can be bought separately or with the shower head. It twists open and allows you to pop in the Hai Infusions (which are essentially shower steamers). 

Indicator light — Nothing you need to do here. It will show you orange/red when the water hasn't warmed up yet and green when it's ready for you to jump in! It will then turn orange-red again if you've gone past the set limit for water you're trying to stay under. 

The Hai app — This Bluetooth shower head hooks up to your phone and you can track water usage, temperature, and more. It's easy to get obsessed! The app doesn't work outside of the US (and since I'm currently living in the UK, I wasn't able to properly test it out). I'll report back if I get access.

What I love about the Hai Showerhead

Warm water indicator — As much as I'd like to live the life of Wim Hof, I just can't do cold showers or plunges for that matter. I LOVE being warm. With the little light on this shower head, you don't have to stick your hand into an icy waterfall to check if the temp is just right. It'll remain orange when it's heating up and turn green when it's good to go. This saves on water waste and freezing your butt off. 

Cute colors — I actually had a really hard time choosing which shower head color I wanted! All of the bodies are silver but the spout face itself is a different color. It's such a fun but subtle way to add color to your bathroom — especially if you live in a rental like me. I ended up opting for surf, which is a light blue, since my bathroom has white, silver, and blue accents. I'm also a beachy gal at heart. I was very tempted by the rose quartz pink and citron yellow though. 

Shower steamer "Infusions" — Talk about a shower head that can do it all. What initially had me enamored with this hardware before it even arrived was the capability to add shower steamers to a small compartment that's attached to the shower head. It's called the Fuse, and it takes capsules (what Hai calls Infusions) that fit in the palm of your hand. There are three options, Relax, Energy Boost, and Repair. These add different scents and vitamins to your water — I was all over the Relax one as it smells like lavender plus sandalwood (a personal fave fragrance of mine). It also has vitamin B12 which my mom tells me to take all the time anyway. Plus, anything that claims to reduce stress instantly gets a spot in my routine. The soothing steam made my bathroom feel like a mini spa!

You'll impress guests — I never thought I'd hear myself say this, but my shower really does impress my friends and fam! In fact, I'm pretty sure people visit just to use it now. One of my best friends decided to shower again before she left our place just to bask in the glory of this shower head once more. Another pal who stopped by walked into our kitchen afterward looking pretty darn relaxed and stated, "That is the best shower I've ever used in my life." If that's not a win, I don't know what is.

App tracking — The shower head is smart enough as is, but to make things cooler,  Hai developed an app you can use to track water usage, temperature, and even how long you took a shower. This definitely gamifies your bathing experience and makes you want to beat your previous record — though I probably won't be taking a shower that's less than four minutes. 

Water pressure slider — There is a gorgeous little button on the shower head that slides effortlessly from top to bottom. I prefer this so much more than buttons, dials, or two very distinct pressure options. The lightest setting is a mist, which makes me feel like I'm at a spa or even a water park. The maximum pressure on the other hand is strong enough to feel like all my shampoo really did get rinsed out without feeling like I've been hosed down with a pressure washer. In between is a gradient range of mist-meets-calming-rainshowers. Plus, I know it's saving energy and water, too. I'm in love.

What I don't love about the Hai Showerhead

It's expensive — Now, I'll be the first to convince my friends that paying more and investing in quality home goods and appliances is completely worth it. Fast fashion and home goods fire me up as they're often crap quality and you end up spending more in the long run. That being said, not everyone has the budget to fork out $200 for a shower head, so it's worth noting that the price can be a downside. That being said, I did spot it on sale recently for $149 and $124.99 on Amazon.

Tools are required — I should already have a renter's tool kit on hand but don't. Therefore I had to buy a wrench to actually install this shower head. If your arm and current shower head are easy to remove or you already have a few common tools on hand (you smart cookie, you), you'll be fine and likely won't need to purchase anything extra.

The hose is a little stiff — This is one beautiful shower head, but I do appreciate hoses that are slightly more flexible and lie flat to the wall. The hose on this shower head is smooth and looks sleek, but it's a little short and wraps in on itself because of the stiffness. This is more of an aesthetic preference really. 

Good to know

Cleaning the shower head — Keeping this baby clean takes very little maintenance. I really haven't had to do much over the last several months. To keep it free of limescale and mildew I wipe down the head with a stainless steel spray cleaner and will use white vinegar to clean the hose part of it. I've only done this once (but it didn't really need it). 

Returns — There is a 60-day return policy if you don't love the shower head. I can't predict the future, but I don't foresee you disliking this cool pick.

How to replace a shower head

Step 1: Stop the water supply

Turn off the water supply to the shower head. This is usually located near the base of the shower. You can usually find it by looking for a valve with a handle that turns clockwise to shut off the water 

Step 2: Loosen the shower head

Use a wrench to loosen the shower head. You can use a standard adjustable wrench or a basin wrench, depending on the size of the shower head. Be careful not to overtighten the wrench, or you could damage the shower head. 

Step 3: Remove shower head

Remove the shower head from the pipe. Once the shower head is loose, you should be able to unscrew it by hand. If it is difficult to remove, you can use the wrench to help you. Apply plumber's tape to the threads of the new showerhead. This will help to create a watertight seal.

Step 4: Attach new shower head

Screw on the new shower head. Be careful not to overtighten the new shower head, or you could damage the threads. 

It isn't always necessary to hire a plumber to fit a shower head, however, if you are not comfortable doing it yourself or if you have a shower head with a specialized connection, it is best to consult with a professional.

Installing a shower tray is not as intimidating as it seems if you know-how. So save yourself from laborer costs, and learn a valuable skill at the same time with this bathroom tutorial.

How to fit a height adjustable shower tray

'Height-adjustable shower trays use legs which are situated underneath the tray itself, raising the profile of it.' says Robert Tyson, bathroom expert, Victorian Plumbing.

'These are really popular as they allow you much easier access to the pipes if anything needs replacing in the future.'

Method:

1. Place the tray in position

Firstly, place the shower tray loosely where you want to eventually install it to check for any fitment or clearance issues. 

Then, using a good drill and suitable screws, secure the legs into position and adjust the height to the level you require at this point (if you're lacking confidence with your tools, take a look at our guide on how to use a drill). Briefly fit the shower tray waste and check everything lines up correctly.

2. Attach the waste

If you’re satisfied with the general fit of the shower tray waste component, you then need to establish the best possible route for your waste pipe if this isn’t already in place. Attach the waste to your tray then connect this to the trap.

3. Level your shower tray

No one wants a wobbly shower tray so you'll need to use a spirit level to make sure that the tray is completely level. Check all angles just to be sure. This is an essential stage that shouldn’t be skipped over when placing this small bathroom shower idea. Because a sloped tray can cause quite a few problems further down the line (and needless to say, doesn't look nice either!)

You can either use a conventional spirit level or use an app on your phone. If you have an iPhone, simply search for the built-in Measure app or you can use something like Bubble level on Google Play.

4. Attach to waste outlet pipe

With the shower tray level, it’s time to attach the underside of the waste to the waste outlet pipe. This obviously needs to be as secure as possible so make sure everything fits snugly and double-check if there are gaps or loose pipework anywhere.

Tyson's top tip: 'Use a watering can or kettle (full of cold water of course!) and pour some water into the waste. You’ll soon know if there’s something wrong.'

5. Fit your shower tray side paneling

To tidy things up, attach your shower tray side panels to the tray to create a flush look. These should be really easy to attach, just pay attention to any instructions you get with the product as directions differ based on the hardware shape, size, and material type.

6. Seal the edges of your shower tray

Take a good quality silicone sealant (like Gorilla Caulk & Seal, available on Amazon) and carefully seal around the edges of the tray, creating a strong bond that will keep everything sturdy.

Fitting a low profile shower tray

'Low-level shower trays are fitted directly onto the floor, which creates a neater and more streamlined look,' explains Liz Tabron, interiors blogger and author on Big Bathroom Shop blog.

If you're wondering how to fit a shower tray of this type, Tabron has the answers.

1. Identify the underfloor joists

Ensure you know where the underfloor joists are. To find them, you'll need to lift your bathroom floorboards. Once you can see them, draw a pencil line to identify where the under-floor joist is positioned. This will help you to position the shower tray correctly.

2. Positioning your shower tray

Ensure the area you've chosen to place your shower tray is level, you can now position it at a 90-degree angle flush to the walls. Next, take your pencil and draw around the outer edges.

Again, with your pencil, outline the shower tray’s waste hole onto the floor below and also draw a line 8mm from the floor, along both walls. This will help you to identify the depth of your mortar placement.

Use your torch to make sure there isn’t any electrical wiring beneath the floor prior to drilling or cutting.

3. Cutting the shower tray waste hole

Having made your outlines you may now remove the shower tray and, using your hole saw, cut out the space you will need for the shower tray waste. Having cut out the relevant space, check that the waste trap fits easily into the hole you have created. If the fit is a little too snug, use your jig saw to make the hole bigger.

Note: Ensure the shower tray waste trap is positioned correctly to take into account underfloor plumbing.

4. Seal the area and mix your mortar

Before mixing your mortar, you should apply a waterproof sealant (like Henkel's clear silicone sealant on Amazon) to the entire area upon which the shower tray will sit.

When preparing mortar, you should use a 5:1 mix, meaning one part cement to five parts sand. You should also aim to create a thick, or stiff mix, which you will then apply as a base for your shower tray, prior to the shower tray installation.

5. Apply the mortar mixture

Once you've prepared your mortar you can begin applying it in the chosen area. Remember to level off your mortar at the 8mm line, which you measured earlier.

Once your bed of mortar is level (use your plastering trowel), it is time to place your shower tray into the correct position. Your shower tray will come with a plastic covering. Before bedding your tray into place, be sure to peel back the plastic along each wall-facing edge. It can be secured with tape along the top edge.

6. Fit the shower tray

Now that your mortar is laid, it becomes difficult to lift and place the shower tray in position with the required degree of accuracy. This is when your glass suction liftersare essential. However, don’t forget to give your shower base a “test lift” prior to allowing the lifters to take the full weight.

Place the shower tray in position and use your level to ensure its level. Using a small trowel, remove excess mortar from around the base, and allow 24 hours for the mortar to set. Once set apply a good quality silicone sealant around the edges where the shower tray meets the wall. This should be applied liberally in order to fill any gaps.

What is a shower waste and how do I fit one?

'A shower waste (often also referred to as a "shower trap") connects to the underside of the shower tray beneath the floor of the shower and works to support the water flow,' explains Adam Chard, bathroom expert, Victoria Plum.

'It is connected to the shower trap piping, which is similar to the trap found under the kitchen sink, where waste water from the taps above can drain out into external sewage systems.'

'If water is not able to drain effectively, it can create a pool of dirty water as you wash, while also potentially leading to leaks and other forms of damage in and around the shower area.'

Method:

1. Peel the masking away

Remove the masking from around the shower tray waste area by carefully peeling it away. Make sure to keep the masking on the rest of the tray to keep it protected.

2. Use a good quality silicone sealant

Apply a small bead of silicone sealant to the waste top nut flange, which ensures a waterproof seal.

3. Insert the waste

Inset the waste into the shower tray and hold the trap underneath.

4. Tighten the waste

Once you’re happy the waste is in the correct position, tighten it in a clockwise direction until it’s as tight as you can get it. Then, wipe away any excess sealant and position the top part with the chrome cap into the waste hole.

Should I grout a shower tray?

No, grout isn't the right material to finish your shower tray with because of its fragility, as one expert explains:

'Make sure you have silicone sealant and not normal grout,' says Alex Hyslop – senior marketing manager, product Mira Showers.

Grout isn’t suitable for sealing around your bathtub or shower tray as it’s not flexible and will crack as soon as any weight is placed on the tub or tray. 

What do you stick a shower tray down with?

'Different suppliers provide instructions on how to install their own brand of shower tray depending on the material of the tray however the most common and effective way to install a shower tray is on a bed of concrete to ensure the tray is completely supported under its base,' says Lydia Luxford, technical manager at Easy Bathrooms.

'Only trays supplied with leg raiser kits are suitable for fitting raised from the floor. It is important to be aware, that shower trays should not be installed directly on a timber floor as timber moved through expansion and contraction which would cause the tray to move or crack.'

'Thermal and concrete boards are available in different sizes and can be used underneath the base of the tray before applying concrete to prevent future movement issues alternatively Marine ply with a minimum thickness of 12mm or standard ply with a minimum of 18mm thickness (must be primed) can be used.'

How do you fix a shower tray to the floor?

'Always follow the instructions provided by the supplier,' advises Luxford.

'If the floor is concrete, clean the area, use a primer to prepare the surface of the concrete then you can lay the concrete to install the tray, it is important to wiggle and tap the tray gently when installing onto concrete to remove any air gaps caught in the mix.'

'If the floor is timber, install either concrete, thermal, or 12mm Marine ply boards over the timbers, then follow the same instructions as above. You must check the tray for level around all of the edges before allowing the concrete to set.'

Do you install a shower tray before tiling?

'Yes, always place your tray in position before installing any tiles or shower boards.' says Luxford.

'It is good practice to also install a strong bead of anti-mold silicone around the edge of the tray during installation to prevent any water leakage under the tray should water ever get down the back of the tiles/boards.'

How much does it cost to have a walk-in shower put in?

Shower remodel costs and the costs of a new shower can vary greatly. 

Ben Neely, interior design expert from Texas-based Riverbend Homes  tells us that the costs of a walk-in shower in particular 'can vary greatly mostly from the level of tile you use, but for a 6’x4' walk-in shower I’d anticipate between $6800-$9000 for new construction including all tile material, labor, grout, pan, waterproofing, etc. Add another $1000-2000 for the tear-out and haul off for a re-model.'

Can I put a walk-in shower in a small bathroom?

Jake Romano Project Manager at California-based John The Plumber estimates that 'you can usually get a walk-in shower if you have at two feet by two feet or
more of available space in the bathroom. So, many small bathrooms can
accommodate a walk-in shower, but not all.'

Ben adds that 'what you’ll probably want to do is have a pony-wall (half-height wall) for 1/2-2/3rds of the overall entry to help with the splash, and we recommend moving the shower head higher up the wall or moving to a rain-water shower head to keep the splash to a minimum.'

I'd tested it with water and it didn't leak but noticed a small amount of coke managed to escape. 

You're supposed to use freezer bags, which would definitely work a lot better. I tied the bag up and left it for just under two hours, checking on it in case it was leaking loads, and made sure the bag was fairly tight around the showerhead and that the affected area was fully submerged.

After

It was a sticky process, but after rinsing the shower head in hot water and giving it a little scrub with my favorite tough sponges from Marigold on Amazon, it looked considerably better. It's not a mindblowing result, but definitely an improvement that I'm 99% sure my boyfriend will notice. 

Next time, I'd leave it overnight, and stock up on freezer bags beforehand.

The before 

The bathroom design revamp was part of a major renovation project that Ali and Neil embarked on when they bought their Victorian terrace in south-east London, moving there to be close to family.

‘We knew this house would be a project when we bought it,' says Ali. 'The bathroom was awful – think 1970s-style carpentry, really old carpet, a huge airing cupboard with a water tank and a slanted ceiling thanks to a set of stairs leading up to the loft at the side of the house. 

'The bath was in the centre of the room with no shower screen. We knew we absolutely had to start again – we needed more space, light and modernisation.’

The process

The tiled and tired old tub sticking out into in the middle of the room might have seemed luxurious when it was first installed decades ago. But it, along with the large cupboards, were awkward and obtrusive.

Once they were ripped and the layout reconfigured, the couple could make much better use of the space – which meant moving the new Victorian-style bath so it sat tidily beneath the window, leaving more room for the focal point twin showers.

‘We used a local company, Create, for the build work, and they recommended WC One for the bathroom,' says Ali .'We had a chat about what we wanted from the space – a big double shower and a roll-top bath.

'My sister-in-law and I were doing our houses up at the same time, so we swapped research to draw as much inspiration as we could. That, along with Pinterest, meant I was able to bring together an idea of what I was after. I wanted a timeless scheme – a black and white base with grey accents on the sink and bath, accessorised with pops of colour.'

The details

‘WC One worked with us on the smaller details, as well as the bigger decisions, like what types of metal we should include. We chose nickel. They helped us source the right taps and mixers to fit in with the era of the house but bring a modern twist. I went with Fired Earth's black and white geometric tiles, and paired them with simple metro brick on the walls.

'I’m all about clean lines and no clutter. We introduced shelving to display accessories. The shelves behind the toilet hold our toilet rolls. We use Who Gives A Crap, who produce eco-friendly toilet rolls packaged in trendy black, white and gold patterns. They’ve become a bit of a feature.

‘My favourite part of the room is probably the shower. The Crittall-style doors add a boutique feel to the space. Friends who come round say it’s like being in a hotel! Anyone who goes through a project like this shouldn’t be under the illusion that it’s quick and painless, but we’ve come out of it with something we love.'

Try the clever hack at home by tying a handful of eucalyptus stems together with twine, ribbon or an elastic band. Simply tie it to your shower head and the scent should last for around a week. Larger stems will be more fragrant - just remember to crush the leaves slightly with a rolling pin or wine bottle before hanging, to release the scent.

Standing in a pool of water each time you take a shower? Knowing how to unclog a shower drain will save you from waiting for a plumber to sort out your problem – and the cost that comes with calling someone in rather than doing it yourself.

Over time, hair and soap scum can block the shower drain with the result that the water from the shower doesn’t drain as it should, and fills the pan instead. Standing in scummy water doesn’t make showering the refreshing experience it should be, and leaves the pan gunky afterwards – and you know your problem is only going to get worse with the overflow of water on to the bathroom floor a potential consequence.

While being savvy about how to clean a shower thoroughly is going to help keep the drain clear, unclogging can be a necessary – and only mildly icky – task. How to unclog a shower drain

You might be wondering why the problem of how to unclog a shower drain comes up so often. ‘Showers are particularly vulnerable to clogs because the hair that goes down the drain sticks to the soap scum and creates a very strong barrier – almost like rebar does with concrete,’ explains Enoch Heise, licensed journeyman plumber and trainer for Legacy Plumbing of the Dallas area. 

‘What makes this worse is that showers drain with only a steady trickle and not with the rush of a draining tub.’

The problem can be solved, though, and these are the options.

1. How to unclog a shower drain with standing water using boiling water

If the clog is a mild one, boiling water could provide a solution to the problem of how to unclog a shower drain.

‘If you don’t want to use harsh chemicals, you can get a great result pouring boiling water down the drain slowly and waiting to hear the gurgle,’ say the experts from Victoria Plumbing.

So, yep, hot water, just off the boil, could unclog the drain. How many times you will need to repeat this method depends on the extent of the blockage. Once may be enough, but repeat until the water passes through without leaving any standing water. 

1. Fill a large saucepan or teakettle to the maximum amount with water.

2. Bring it to a boil.

3. Slowly pour the water down the drain. 

‘Pour it down the drain in two or three stages, allowing the hot water to work for several seconds between each pour,’ advises Aaron Mulder, co-owner and operations manager for Mr Rooter Plumbing of San Antonio, a Neighborly company.

Note: this is fine for metal pipes but not for PVC.

2. How to unclog a shower drain with hair using a plunger

A plunger, much like you'd use to unblock a toilet, can also come in useful when you’re wondering how to unclog a shower drain. ‘When used properly, the flat cup works to create a vacuum over the drain and dislodge the clog at hand,’ explains Aaron Mulder.

1. Remove the drain cover and apply petroleum jelly to the plunger's edge – this will help secure the seal. 

2. Put the plunger cup over the drain opening and run the shower until enough water covers the lip of the plunger. 

3. Next, quickly move the plunger rapidly to bring up the clog. You may have to do this for several minutes.

4. Test run the shower to see that water flows down smoothly before reattaching the drain cover.

3. How to unclog a shower drain with a snake or a wire hanger

Ask a plumber how to unclog a shower drain and you can be sure they will advise the use of a plumber’s snake, also known as a drain snake, to locate and remove the clog once and for all. 

‘We highly recommend using a drain snake to naturally unclog your pipes,’ says Catherine Keo from The Original Plumber. ‘If your clog is due to soapy hair or other residues, a drain snake can pull the buildup out without the need for chemicals. You should feel the auger hit the clog so you know it's working.’

If you don’t own a tool, you could improvise using a wire hanger. It is, though, very important not to damage the trap if you use this method.

We recommend you wear gloves doing this.

Unclogging a shower drain using a plumber’s snake:

1. How you run your plumber’s snake depends on whether it is electric or manual. Start by removing your shower grate and any hair or debris on it.

2. Direct the cable into the drain opening, tightening the clamp and carefully rotating to help the snake auger itself down.

3. You may feel resistance when you reach the clog, and this shouldn't be too far down . Rotate the cable to break up the blockage. 

4. At this stage you can run some water down to check whether it's cleared or not. If it has, bring up the snake and remove any debris attached to it. If not cleared, continue to guide the cable further down.

5. Finish off this process by running hot water down the drain to wash away the broken up debris and reattach the shower drain cover.

Unclogging a shower drain using a wire hanger:

1. Unravel the hanger so it's straight, leaving the hook at the end.

2. Remove your drain cover and weave the hook side through and down the shower pipe.

3. You should feel when you get to a blockage – you can use a flashlight also to take a look – and when you get there, hook onto the hair etc. and pull gently to remove it. Keep going until it's clear, then flush out using the hot water method above.

4. How to unclog a shower drain with baking soda and vinegar

What about how to unclog a shower drain the traditional way? In fact, this method is still a go-to in many households as it works so darn well. Plus, it may have you reminiscing over your science fair baking soda volcano project too – an ideal distraction for not the most glamorous job! 

How this works is the hero household ingredient, baking soda, will dissolve mineral and soap deposits which are gunky and clogging up the pipe. It will also help disinfect the area and eliminate odours from any fungi or lurking bacteria (likely). 

The vinegar is what helps cause the pressurized reaction, but this only happens properly in a sealed environment. Which is why it's best to try cover the drain pipe while this mixture works.

1. Clear the drain of any hair and debris using the drain snake or coat hanger method. 

2. Pour one teakettle full of just off the boil water down (carefully as this may splash).

3. Pour one cup baking soda followed by one cup of vinegar down the shower drain, cover and leave it for minimum 15 minutes, max an hour.

4. Flush through with more hot water to clear it completely.

You might want to try the recommendation of Vera Peterson, president of Molly Maid, too, who suggests, ‘Squirt some grease-fighting dish soap (helps to dissolve grease) into the drain,’ before adding the hot water.

5. How to unclog a shower drain without using a store-bought product

You might wonder how to clean a shower drain without resorting to a special cleaning product, such as Drano or similar. If so, you can use the above methods, or try using dish soap and hot water. 

Again, depending on the extent of the blockage, you may need to repeat this method several times until the water runs freely. This is also a good way to finish off method two above, using a snake pipe or wire hanger.

1. Bring two litres/the max amount your teakettle will take to the boil.

2. Add in a few tablespoons of dish soap. 

3. Pour this down your shower drain. 

4. Repeat as needed.

What can dissolve hair in a drain?

The hair we shed naturally is a major cause of shower drain clogs – and long hair especially can block them. As for dissolving it, ‘Baking soda and vinegar should help, if you want a safe concoction,’ says Jake Romano from John The Plumber.

But as with many household tasks, prevention is better than cure. ‘If possible, use shower strainers,’ he recommends. ‘Shower strainers are available at most hardware stores and they’re cheap. They'll catch most of your hair strands before they get stuck in the gunk in the drain. This alone will prevent most shower clogs.’

How do you unclog a shower drain naturally?

Storecupboard favorites baking soda and vinegar are the answer if you want to unclog a shower drain naturally. The recipe from Catherine Keo from The Original Plumber? ‘Just mix one third of a cup of baking soda with one third of a cup of vinegar. The solution will fizz. Let it sit in the drain for an hour before running hot water so it can break down any residue.’

Can boiling water unclog a drain?

Boiling water can unclog a drain – or do some of the work. ‘Hot water can often melt soap residue and other particles in the drain, so it can help,’ says Jake Romano. 

But beware! ‘If the water is too hot, it can cause damage to the pipes,’ he says. ‘Nothing beats a proper cleaning, in my opinion. Use those cheap snakes, and that’ll often get the job done.’

What is the best product to unclog a shower drain?

The best product to unclog a shower drain might not be the cleaner you first think of. ‘Chemical drain cleaners are something that many people turn to, but these usually only offer temporary relief if any,’ says Enoch Heise.

‘The reason is that as soon as the chemicals eat a path through the clog, water flow is restored and the chemicals drain out. There is still a bunch of gunk clinging to the sides of the pipe and it will clog again very quickly.’

But what you can invest in is a drain snake. ‘We recommend always using a mechanical drain cleaner that will really scrape the sides of the pipe, break up the buildup, and remove the hair,’ Enoch says. ‘You can readily buy small drain snake tools at the home improvement store that will do a great job for most shower clogs.’

Before we all go getting exciting looking at gorgeous pictures of walk in showers (that's to come promise) let's talk practicalities. You first need to decide on the best place for a walk in shower in your bathroom design.

Swear if we started off everyday showering in this beauty we'd be much happier people. Look at it! A waterfall shower bang in the center of your bathroom – it's bold, but in this space it totally makes sense because of the slanted ceilings. Having a simple shower with just a single glass screen keeps this space feeling open and super luxurious, and means there's room for a freestanding tub too. 

19. Be on trend with dark tiles 

Black bathrooms have been a huge trend over the last few years – glamorous, dark and moody they lend themselves perfectly to walk in showers. You don't want to be ruining that chic, gothic vibe with a bulky shower enclosure! Keep to the minimalist look and go floor to ceiling with black tiles (hexagonal mosaics would be our personal choice) and install a simple shower head to keep the space fuss-free.

A look we haven't touched on yet is creating a totally separate walk in shower that's divided from the rest of the room not just by a screen but by a partition wall. This allows for more privacy plus creates a mini wet room within your bathroom.

How much does it cost to put in a walk in shower?

This depends on the design you go for. For a simple, tray and screen design you can make that happen from around $1000 for a pre-fab unit but if you want something more luxurious the prices go up from there. For something fully customized you could pay anywhere between $8000 and $15,000. 

You have to add in the cost of installation too. This depends on how much plumbing work you need doing, but it could cost between $2000 and $2500 if pipes need changing. You might have to add to that the cost of waterproofing the space which will be around $1000. The cost of tiles and the labor to install them should be budgeted for too – obviously, this will depend on the tiles you choose but on average you are looking at $2000. 

What is the best material for a walk in shower?

There are plenty of options when it comes to choosing a material for your walk in shower. For the shower walls, glass or ceramic tiles are some of the most popular options  – there are plenty of designs to choose from plus they are easy to keep clean. Marble and natural stone work well too but can get pricey, so depends on your budget.

The best material for the flooring of your walk in shower depends on your design – if you are going with a shower tray then you can choose between acrylic or ceramic. If you want to tile the floor to match the rest of your space then you might have to be pickier.

'Forgoing a shower tray in favor of a walk in shower or wet room allows the floor tiles to run through to the shower area, which adds visual space to a room. However, not all surfaces are safe to use in a wet room setting and it is crucial to know what the slip rating of the material is. I’d recommend using a material with a structured, textured finish to give extra grip in wet areas. How to choose the best type of shower 

Before you even start to think about the type of shower enclosure or shower head you need, get to know your bathroom's plumbing and water heating systems, whether for your family bathroom or for an en-suite bathroom. Unless you are willing to upgrade, you may be restricted by what is already in place, eliminating some of the options. 

Electric showers

Quick and easy to install, electric showers draw on a cold-water supply and heat the water on demand so you can jump in at any time of day. They’re also extremely economic – up to 99.7 per cent energy efficient – as the cold water is heated by an element, providing hot water instantly, with no wastage. The higher kilowatt rating you choose, the better the flow will be.

Mixer showers

Mixer showers draw from both hot and cold water supplies and usually deliver higher flow rates. The shower works by mixing hot and cold water within the unit and then delivering it through the showerhead, which can be fixed, adjustable, or as a handset on a riser rail. They’re ideal for homes with readily available hot water, such as a combination boiler or large-capacity hot-water cylinder. If required, a pump can be added to a low-pressure, gravity-fed hot water system to increase water pressure.

Thermostatic showers

Once you have set your ideal temperature, thermostatic electric and mixer showers will automatically ensure this remains virtually constant – even if someone turns on a tap elsewhere in the house. Although temperature-stabilised electric showers provide adequate temperature control for most homes, the demand for thermostatic peace-of-mind is growing, particularly if children or elderly people need to be taken into account. 

Water saving shower heads

Eco showers limit the flow of water to an efficient, usable level no matter what your household pressure system, whilst maintaining your selected temperature. Available in both electric and mixer variations, they can offer up to 50 per cent reduction in water usage when compared to conventional mixer showers.

Digital showers

Available in either mixer or electric variations, digital or remote control showers are an increasingly popular choice as they offer a combination of state-of-the-art bathroom technology, stylish design and ease of installation. The shower is controlled by a panel, which can be located within a 10-metre radius, giving you more freedom in your bathroom layout.

The panel then communicates with the power unit, located either in the loft or airing cupboard, to adjust the flow and temperature of the water. Water at a preferred temperature is then delivered through the ceiling or wall to the showerhead, and there is no unsightly plumbing visible.

How to identify your water system

High-pressure water systems

If you have a hot water tank, usually located within an airing cupboard, but don’t have a cold water tank in your loft, then you have an unvented high-pressure system. This can look similar to a low-pressure system, so always check to avoid any confusion. If you have a combination boiler, which heats water on demand so there is no hot water storage cylinder or cold-water tank, then you have a high-pressure system.

Low-pressure water systems

If you have a cold-water tank in your loft and a hot-water tank in your airing cupboard, then you have a gravity-fed system. It’s the most common household plumbing system and means that you have a low-pressure water system.

Having low pressure need not limit your choice of shower type – power showers are designed to offer optimum performance within a low-pressure scenario. And if your hot water cylinder is large enough, you could choose to boost your system pressure with a pump, which can enable you to have a mixer shower, if you desire.

Cold mains water supply

If cold water comes into your property through a rising main then you have a cold mains system. Most electric showers can simply be connected to a cold water mains supply – all you need to do is choose a style to suit your bathroom scheme. However, if your cold mains water supply does not have the required minimum pressure for such showers, a tank-fed, pumped electric shower would be a good choice. 

How to choose the best shower heads

Whether your shower will be over the bath, in a wet room, or in its own cubicle, there are a few choices. 

Shower taps
Some bath taps come with a shower head attached. You can get a rail to hold the head, but they are often fitted as part of a freestanding bath, perhaps away from a wall and intended to be hand held. As such, they are generally best for those who prefer to sit in the bath and rinse their hair, and are also good for bathtime for those with young children.

Fixed shower head
This type of shower head (as the name suggests) is fixed through the ceiling or on an arm from the wall. Generally the shower rose will have one flow pattern (although some may be adjustable) and they are often found in wetrooms. For versatility, you may pair it with a handheld shower head, and switch between the two during use – although some can be operated at the same time. 

They are sometimes referred to as rainfall, or rainforest showers and can offer a really luxurious showering experience if high-pressure.

Handheld shower head
Handheld showers tend to have a head that can offer both jet and spray options for varied use. They are also offer better reach and flexibility than fixed shower heads. Don't worry, you won't have to hold it for the length of your shower – they can be paired with a wall-mounted slider rail kit.

How to choose the best shower enclosure, screen or door

While there are a number of shower cubicles and screens available, here are the most common and popular shower enclosures on the market today:

Single-door quadrant shower 

Quadrant shower enclosures are perfect for any bathroom that may have tight corners or are lacking in space. They will fit snugly into any corner meaning no area is wasted. You can choose from a single door opening or to minimalise space even further choose a sliding door option.

Hinged shower doors 

If space isn’t a problem and a sliding door is not necessary a hinged door is practical and stylish. There are a huge array of modern shower encloses with hinged doors to choose from, they open outwards into the bathroom and come complete with a variety of chrome, brass or metal fittings.

Sliding shower doors

If you want a streamlined, modern looking shower enclosure a sliding door will be perfect for you – a practical and stylish option. Also, ideal if space saving is high up on your list of requisites. There are different glasses to choose between, however they work best using a clear, strong, toughen glass.

Bi-fold Shower doors 

Many shower doors require you to have a certain amount of free space outside of the shower enclosure to allow the door to open fully. Bi-fold shower enclosures, also known as in-fold, are the ideal space saving buy. They fold in on themselves to make space for users to enter and exit the shower with ease.

D-shaped showers 

D-shaped shower enclosures provide a spacious showering space and can make a bold statement in any bathroom. The three-sided shower enclosure is a unique style as it only requires one flat wall to fit the enclosure, opposed to using two wall spaces in the corner of a room. This grand showering space is growing in popularity.

‘When we bought our neighbour’s attached cottage three years ago, we undertook a huge renovation to convert the two separate homes into a single property,’ explains Sara.

‘The main bathrooms were updated as part of the project, but we left our en suite untouched as it was usable, if old-fashioned. It wasn’t until we started having issues with the fittings that we decided to look at new designs for the space.’

Sarah and Mark wanted to create a space that was extremely practical with plenty of storage, subtle lighting, underfloor heating and a towel rail in reaching distance of the shower. The couple decided to enlist the expertise of a local bathroom designer, Trevor Yeardye of Yeardye Luxury Bathrooms, to create the perfect layout and select the right products from a broad range of suppliers.

Although the bathroom had been renovated 15 years previously with expensive finishes, including a handmade marble basin and Jacuzzi bath, it looked old-fashioned and didn’t fit in with the rest of the house.

A custom-built shower cubicle by Theshowerlab was designed to fit under the exposed beams; it’s fitted with brassware by Zucchetti. The ceramic wall tiles, from Porcelanosa, have a subtle pattern that tones with the floor tiles and wallpaper

A coloured glass splashback from Safeguard Glass is fitted into the recessed shelf, and lights up in the evening for an atmospheric look. The brassware is from Zucchetti and the radiator is from Radox. Subtle lighting was an important part of the space so Trevor designed recessed shelves to be fitted next to the bath and in the shower enclosure, and then added LED lights. To support the voids, concrete lintels and pieces of timber were added to accommodate the depth of the light fittings. These were then plastered along with the rest of the room, and a shelf was added for a neat finish.

‘I love white and grey interiors and thought it would be the perfect palette for a fresh and tranquil bathroom. I didn’t want the space to feel too sterile so I chose a vanity from GSI with a driftwood finish, that adds warmth yet still feels modern,’ says Sara.

To minimise disruption, the en suite’s original layout was kept the same, but the airing cupboard door was relocated to create space for a towel radiator from Radox, and the cupboard itself was repurposed as bedroom storage.
