Obvi, whether you’ve got a teeny tiny outdoor space or a slightly larger balcony or patio, naturally you want to make the most of it. I get it, completely. Over the years, I’ve had gardens of all shapes and sizes, and I’ve always tried to make the most of every space. I mean, why wouldn’t you? 

But, when it comes to amping up your outdoor space, one thing I’ve struggled to get past is overspending on outdoor furniture and accessories. It always seems like all the nice things are way over my budget. Sigh. Luckily, I’ve found a way to get around this tiny snag: by building a stash of ultra transitional buys that work both indoors and outdoors, allowing me to use them all year long — and not just in the warmer summer months. I can honestly say that it’s been a complete game-changer. 

So to help you make more of your outdoor space, however big or small, I’ve put together a guide to some of my favorite indoor-outdoor furniture buys that work overtime inside and out.

Painting garden furniture is a great way to protect your outdoor furniture from the elements and give it a quick refresh.

Wooden outdoor furniture is especially vulnerable to weather damage, so even if you don't want to paint it a different color, you should apply a protective wood stain. Making sure the paint lasts and holds up against the elements all year round is tricky, but it’s all in the prep work and aftercare. 

As with painting indoor furniture, preparation is key. You want to start by removing any flaking or chipped paint from any wooden furniture, treat any rust spots on metal and patch or glue any cracks in plastic. Giving your paint the perfect base will not only make your paint last longer but give it a professional-looking finish too. 

Gone are the days when exterior wood paint was brown or brown, now you can find almost as many shades as you can for indoors. We love sage greens and blues, which provide the perfect backdrop for plants. 

Making sure your surface – whatever the material – is thoroughly cleaned and dry before doing anything else is essential. Sugar soap is a fantastic de-greaser that will properly prepare outdoor furniture for painting. You can also use things like Elbow Grease which you can grab at Amazon, but make sure you give it a good rinse after.

How to paint wooden outdoor furniture

Most wooden outdoor furniture is made from pressure-treated wood, like fences and decking. Though they are designed to hold up in all weathers, they do need treating to protect them from rot. You can stain, oil, or paint wooden outdoor furniture in any shade you want, whether that’s a natural wood shade or something bright and colorful. 

There are many different types of external wood paint you can use, including shed and fence paint which can also be used to paint furniture. Some even have water repellent properties like Cuprinol Ducks Back which causes water to bead and roll straight off. 

A great paint for garden furniture is the Frenchic Al Fresco range (you can grab at Amazon) which has a primer and sealer built-in, as well as being self-leveling. Just give the chair a light sand with 120 grit and use a chalk paint brush to coat it in 2-3 coats. A good primer to use on exterior wood is Zinsser’s Bullseye 123 or Cover Stain. Primer, however, does raise the grain of wood so will need a good sand after priming, then perhaps a second coat of primer to ensure a perfectly smooth finish.

• If your wooden furniture is brand new, then now's the perfect time to apply a coat of paint to protect it from the elements. If your furniture is a year or two old, then have a look at the timber and see what condition it's in. Remove any chipped or dented timber and lumps of existing paint with a stiff wire brush.
• If there are any holes or cracks, use wood filler to repair the damage. With a putty knife, work the filler into any holes or cracks. Then leave to dry and repeat, if necessary.
• Sanding the furniture will give a good base for the paint to stick to. Make sure you pop on a mask to protect you from any dust. Start sanding with a coarse-grain paper, such as 80 grit, and then finish with a finer grain, such as 220 grit, to create a really smooth finish. 
• A sandpaper block is best for tabletops and flat surfaces, but you'll need sheets of sandpaper to get between slats or around legs.
• Sanding the furniture will give a good base for the paint to stick to. Make sure you pop on a mask to protect you from any dust. Start sanding with a coarse-grain paper, such as 80 grit, and then finish with a finer grain, such as 220 grit, to create a really smooth finish. A sandpaper block is best for tabletops and flat surfaces, but you'll need sheets of sandpaper to get between slats or around legs.
• Once you're finished sanding, use a large, clean paintbrush or a vacuum with a brush attachment to clean off any dust. Then, use a detergent, such as sugar soap, to remove any grease from the surface and leave it to air dry. This will help the paint to stick.
• Now it's time to get painting. Try to pick a day that's warm but not too hot as this can stop the paint from drying correctly. Make sure you pop down a dust sheet or old blanket to protect your patio or lawn from any paint spills.
• If the furniture has never been painted before, then it's worth applying a coat of wood primer and leaving this to dry before applying your first coat of paint.
• When you're ready to start painting, stir the paint well and then use a brush to apply it, paying attention to any nooks and crannies.
• Leave the first coat of paint to dry for the time specified by the manufacturer on the tin and then apply your second coat. It's better to apply two thin layers of paint than one thick, gloopy layer. Leave to dry and then sit back and admire your handiwork.
  

How to paint plastic furniture 

Painting plastic outdoor furniture is one of the easiest materials to paint as it’s already smooth. 

Like with anything you paint, you want to ensure the surface is completely clean and dry. If your furniture is old, it may not have the smoothest surface, so you’ll want to give it a sand with a 220 grit. 

For newer furniture, you can still do this step to create a key for the paint if the surface is high gloss. 

• Prime the surface with a plastic (latex-based) primer paint, usually in a can. I really like Rustoleum’s Plastic Primer. Priming increases your paint’s durability and creates a great surface for painting. 
• Rustoleum also do a good Direct to Plastic spray paint which doesn’t require a primer, but in personal experience, I never skip a primer, even for paints that claim not to need one. Once dry, you can go in with your color paint.
• Satin or gloss finish is best for plastic furniture, so once you’ve chosen your color spray paint (easiest with these surfaces), shake the can for 60 seconds, keep the can upright and spray 25-30cm away from the piece of furniture and keep the can moving from side to side slowly and evenly coat the surface in a light coat. 
• Allow the full dry time and repeat with another 1-2 coats until fully opaque. Aiming for full coverage in the first coat or spraying too close can put your surface at risk of drip marks you’ll then need to sand off and re-paint.
• You should not need to seal this surface, but Rustoleum’s Crystal Clear lacquer is a great protector for all surfaces and make your paint last longer outdoors.

How to paint metal garden furniture

Metal requires a little extra prep work as it’s prone to rust. You will need to remove any rust or flaking areas, which can be done with a wire brush or sandpaper with 120 grit. If the furniture doesn’t require de-rusting, you can go straight in with 240-grit sandpaper to key the surface for painting. Next, you’ll want to clean or degrease the surface and leave to dry fully.

The primer you’ll want to use for metal should have anti-rust properties, so something like Hammerite’s No1 Rust Beater Primer & Undercoat. 

Going for a grey primer is great if you’re going to paint it a darker color, or in white, if painting a lighter color as it will make the color more vibrant and help cover any existing paint color. You can just brush this on, ensuring your paint in the same direction for even coverage and low brush marks.

• To paint, you can go in with a spray paint like Hammerite Metal Paint which also comes in a tin. 
• Many wood paints can also be used on metal so make sure to read the label to find out what surfaces your paint can be used on. There are three different finishes you can get with metal paint – Gloss, Satin, or Matt. 
• Once you’ve decided what type of paint you want to use, either brush it on in thin, even layers, allowing for adequate dry time in between each coat, or spray it on, again in light coats, keeping the spray moving and at a steady speed.
• You shouldn’t need to seal this paint either, so once you’ve done your final coat, you’re ready to use your newly spruced-up bistro set.

Like many of us, I am obsessed with achieving the perfect garden space to relax and unwind in. Outdoor furniture is an important part of creating that cosy place but like many, I find it hard to maintain it because they often take a battering from the external conditions they are subject to.

One of the first pieces of outdoor furniture I ever bought was a pair of SKARPÖ plastic tub chairs from Ikea. These are lightweight, affordable, and surprisingly comfortable to lounge around in. Plus, they were ideal for the terrace I had at the time. 

Initiailly, I purchased the white version of the chairs as I thought they looked very chic. And, as they are plastic, I figured they would be pretty durable and wouldn't face the same issues with water as a lot of wooden furniture does...

Project inspiration

When I moved to a house with a large garden with mature trees I placed the chairs I had at the end, under the shade of said trees (one of my favourite places to sit). 

After my first winter there though it became apparent that my positioning of these chairs wasn’t the greatest idea. The debris from the pine tree above had left my stylish white chairs looking a bit grubby. Of course, I shouldn’t have left them out all winter but I did and it meant that no matter how hard I tried to bring them back to white – after previous successes when cleaning patio furniture – I couldn't get them back to the perfect white. 

I decided my only remedy was to paint them. I was a little bit concerned because I wasn’t sure what type of paint to use to cope with the outdoor conditions whilst also being durable enough to cope with the friction of someone sitting in it. It did however create a fun DIY project opportunity to completely change the colour of the chairs.

How to paint IKEA SKARPÖ chairs step-by-step

I had recently painted a fence and shed using Rustoleum’s Garden paint and noticed that the label said it was for “Rigid Plastic”. As I had some leftover, I thought I would give it a go. The thing I love about their garden paint is that it comes in 110 shades in a chalky finish. Most outdoor paints have a limited colour range in my experience and this has the benefits of a matt finish and no priming necessary.

I had a leftover tin of a colour called “Pink Champagne” which is a lovely pale tone and I thought was perfect for the chairs.

1. Hose the chairs down

First of all, make sure your chairs are clean from debris and dirt. I did this by hosing off the chairs to get rid of any excess then used a household multi-surface cleanser to wipe off any remaining residue. Before I added any paint I made sure the surface was dry by using a dish or microfiber cloth.

2. Apply the paint

To apply the paint I used a simple roller but a brush is fine also. The paint is quite thick in consistency which is common with many outdoor paints. Mix the paint inside the tin before applying and pour into a paint tray or container. Be careful of drips falling from the paint roller/brush, it’s a hard paint to remove if you get it somewhere unintended.

3. Give them a second coat

Lay down a dust sheet and place the chair on top of it to protect the ground. The chair is quite textured so use short strokes of the brush to make sure you get all of the surface. You want to apply the paint quite thinly so it doesn’t clump up in any places. Take your time covering the entire area, taking care to do the legs fully as well. 

The coverage is really good, I have barely used any of my 750ml tin to paint 2 chairs with 2 coats each. The 2nd coat wasn’t completely necessary but because of the textured finish on the chair I had noticed some small white spots coming through that I missed the first time.

The results: 

How have the chairs held up?

Short answer is, really well. I was expecting some flaking over time but didn’t get any and the chairs were well used. The refreshed IKEA SKARPÖ chairs have been outside for over a year and the paint did not disappoint. The only problem I had was I left them under a tree again for another year so they got very dirty... I have to stop doing that! 

I did clean them and they came up pretty well but I decided to paint them again (using the same tin of paint from the previous year) and they came up good as new.

The Weber Smokey Joe is compact, as well as easy to use. We used it to test a huge range of food, from burgers to chicken wings and even an entire Tomahawk steak. And it's safe for us to say that everything we cooked on this BBQ tasted like perfection. It performs just as well as a regular-size BBQ, but with the convenience of taking up zero floor space. What's not to love?

I've been testing lots of portable BBQs, from practical options to design-savvy buys. Namely, I've tested Heston Blumenthal's The Cube, I'm currently testing another Weber BBQ and I have the popular BergHOFF portable BBQ on the go, too. I'll be comparing all of these BBQs once I've made my verdict, but so far the Smokey Joe is my favorite.

Unboxing the Weber Smokey Joe

Whilst we admittedly forgot to take a photo of this BBQ in its box, it did arrive in a compact package that's easy enough for one person to carry. It's easy to put together and you only have to attach the legs and the handles. Just don't screw them on too tight or you might risk damaging it.

Parts of the grill came wrapped in plastic, but it wasn't a huge amount. The waste to dispose of wasn't a crazy amount, either. Especially in comparison to other BBQs we have tested.

Our first impressions of this BBQ were that it's quite simple to use, and also sturdy when in use. We weren't so keen on the tuck-n-carry lid at first as it didn't seem that secure. We didn't really know what to expect until we started cooking.

Ease of use

First of all: don't forget to open the side vents and the lid vents before you light your BBQ. This allows air to flow through the grill and ensures better cooking results. How long it took until it was ready to cook on changed each time we lit this BBQ, depending on the actual charcoal we used, but it was ready within roughly 15–20 minutes. 

The first time you light the BBQ, it's recommended to keep it lit for at least 30 minutes before cooking anything. This is to burn off any residue from the manufacturing process.

How to know the quantity of charcoal to use? This BBQ comes with a handy charcoal cup to help you measure.

We tested this BBQ in a number of locations (as it is a portable BBQ after all), and in a number of situations. First of all, I tested it at home on my terrace, cooking for just me and my partner. We started off simple with some pork and corn on the cobs. 

Then, I took this BBQ to my parents' house, as they were hosting a garden party and wanted to cook their guests burgers. We used this BBQ to cook burgers for around 20 people, in batches, and both the first and the last burger (and all burgers in between) were perfectly cooked, with compliments from guests. The third time we used this BBQ we tested it cooking a range of meats, from kebabs to lamb and also a Tomahawk steak.

Overall, our experience with this BBQ was nothing but positive. It's super convenient and fuss-free and it essentially does exactly what it says on the tin. It's the ultimate BBQ if you want something that can simply just cook your food, and well at that.

Cooking burgers and small cuts of meat
We tested this burger with several small cuts of meat, from pork to lamb, and also with chicken skewers and your average beef burger. We noticed it cooks quite fast with its lid on, as you'd expect, and its cooking area is plenty enough to fit quite a few items of food on there at one time. You could easily fit eight burgers on this grill at any time. It also has a hinged lid that you can make use of when there's a breeze, to prevent your BBQ from going out, or to keep the heat in on one side of it.

Burgers took around 15 minutes to cook, max. The lid also concealed the smoke to give these burgers a great smokey taste, and to help melt the cheese fast. 

Cooking a larger joint of meat
We used this portable BBQ to cook a sizeable Tomahawk steak, to test its cooking abilities. When cooking the Tomahawk steak, we let it sit on the BBQ for around 12 minutes on either side. Then, we took it off and wrapped it in foil to allow it to cook a little more on standing. We were very impressed that a BBQ this size, and with such basic features, managed to cook this large joint so well. Not only was it cooked to perfection, but the outer layer of this joint had so much flavor. It really was impressive.

We should note that we cooked this joint after cooking smaller bits of meat, so the BBQ had slightly cooled down already. We probably wouldn't suggest putting it on the BBQ first as it might burn with the BBQ being too hot. Otherwise, you can indirectly cook a joint this size on this BBQ, by arranging the coals to sit on either side of the bbq, leaving the middle of the grill coal-less.

Cooking veggies and skewers
We managed to cook corn on the cobs on this BBQ whilst testing it, and also chicken skewers, too.

Both cooked well, with nothing much else to report other than they took as long as we'd imagine. We, of course, wrapped the corn on the cobs in foil. And with the skewers, we placed the sticks hanging off the side of the BBQ. You can fit quite a few skewers on this BBQ at one time, handily enough.

Cleaning the Weber Smokey Joe

Once you've finished cooking on this BBQ, you can close all of the vents to distinguish it faster.

Since this grill is nice and portable, it's very easy to clean. It stays hot for quite a while, so you're best to leave it overnight and clean it the next day. Just remove and soak the grates, and then empty the ash and leftover charcoal. Give it a wipe-down all around, inside and out.

Since we tested the black version of this BBQ, we cannot comment on whether the other colors stain after use. But rest assured we didn't notice any cosmetic blemishes after cooking on the black version of this BBQ several times. Something to bear in mind! 

Storage and maintenance

The Weber Smokey Joe is easy to store, inside or out, and since it's compact you can simply just carry it into your garage or tuck it underneath furniture outside, after cleaning.

A great feature of this BBQ is its tuck-n-carry lock lid. Essentially, the stand that you use to put the lid on a hinge whilst cooking can also be used to neatly pack this grill away. And to carry it from destination A to destination B. The only thing we will say about this feature is that as great as it is, it doesn't feel the most secure. If you've been out BBQing at the beach or at someone's house and your grill is full of ash, then you might want to put it in a bag to avoid possible spillage whilst driving. So, while it is portable, we wouldn't recommend putting it on the back of a bike or walking it somewhere as it's quite uncomfortable to hold for long amounts of time, and as previously mentioned, it's not the most secure. 

If you are searching for a secure BBQ that's super portable, the Everdure Cube is brilliant but it doesn't come with a lid. Otherwise, the Weber Go Anywhere is portable, a little larger and it has a lid.

How does the Weber Smokey Joe rate online?

Simply enough (and unsurprisingly) this portable grill rates positively online. The only negative reviews claim that the enamel on their BBQs lid had cracked. This doesn't impact cooking but cosmetically, it obviously doesn't look great. We've not had this experience with our Smokey Joe. Other negative comments say it's not the most secure when the tuck-n-carry lock lid is put to use. 

Reviewers on Amazon give this BBQ 4.3-stars out of 5. The majority of people love this BBQ and comment on how easy and convenient it is to use, as well as its compact size. 

Customers from John Lewis & Partners rate the Weber Smokey Joe 4.6 stars out of 5. They say it's excellent quality and great value, with comments on its portability, how easy it is to clean, and its compact size.

Over at Walmart, this grill boasts a 4.7-star rating out of 5 with reviewers questioning how they ever lived without it. Lots of people commented on how it's an ideal camping BBQ.

How does it compare to similar models and its predecessors?

Weber sells two portable BBQs, this one and the Weber Go Anywhere. Luckily, we've tested both of these grills so can offer a comparison below.

The Weber Smokey Joe is your best bet if you're looking for something small, for use mostly at home and to feed around two to four people at one time. The Go Anywhere, however, neatly tucks away to travel anywhere with you (hence the name) and it offers a larger cooking space. It can be used to cook for more people with its rectangular cooking space. 

These two BBQs are admittedly quite similar, but they differ in price with the Smokey Joe coming in at £99.99, and the Go Anywhere at £109.99. The Go Anywhere also comes in a gas version.

Should you buy the Weber Smokey Joe?

In one word: yes. We love this grill due to how versatile it is, and because it's so easy to use and store. If you're tempted to buy a BBQ but don't want something you have to wheel in and out of your garage, cover when not in use, or even if buying and storing a gas bottle for a gas BBQ is putting you off, then this is a great pick. It also takes up zero floor space, you can use it atop an outdoor table to cook your food. It's fuss-free and totally worth your money when it comes to quality.

For me, it is the perfect little BBQ. I have a small amount of outside space in my garden that's only protected by a short gate. So, this portable BBQ is ideal for bringing inside after use. We also rarely cook for more than four people, but to know that this BBQ can cope with that is great.

What pool furniture do I need?

The magic lies in a naturally occurring oil, which can reportedly repel water as well as prevent warping and cracking. Thanks to its high oil content and low maintenance, teak is designed to last a long time. 

However, teak tends to make for an expensive investment. As such, woods like eucalyptus and acacia have grown quickly in popularity for use in outdoor furniture. They aren't quite such hardwearing options as teak, but they're still plenty weather-resistant, especially when kept topped up each year with a protective coat of wood preservative.

Metal: When it comes to your backyard, you really can't go wrong with metal. Not only does this industrial material look cool, but it's also incredibly durable, meaning it'll hold up nicely over time. That said, it's important to get a little picky about the type of metal you add to your e-cart. For a low-maintenance and durable option, aluminum makes the best investment. Unlike other metals, aluminum doesn't rust when exposed to water, and, unlike some wood species, it won't crack or warp when exposed to the elements and doesn't need any upkeep.

Originally crafted from wood, Adirondack chairs are now built from a wide range of materials, most notably HDPE or plastic polymer, traditional timber, or metal framed options. But what are the pros and cons of each option, and how do you go about choosing the right material for your needs? Get the lowdown below. 

Wooden Adirondack chairs

The traditional choice, wood can be a great option for outdoor furniture, and, as long as you look for FSC-certification before you buy and ideally source from a local manufacturer, it can also be one of the most sustainable options. However, there are many different types of timber to choose from, all with slightly different plus and minus points.

Teak is the hardwood most prized for its strength and durability outdoors. As well as offering an extremely dense grain that prevents moisture from penetrating, teak retains high levels of natural oils in its timber once cut, which further helps to prevent the wood from weathering. You can top up the wood with teak oil to offer even more weather resistance, although many allow the timber to weather over time to its signature soft silvery patina.

However, this dense grain is down to teak's extremely slow-growing habit, and that slow growth, plus the difficulty of working with such a tough timber makes it one of the most expensive wooden options. 

Cheaper and faster-growing alternatives that are now becoming very popular outdoor furniture choices are the hardwoods acacia and eucalyptus. These woods are slightly less dense than teak but they are far-quicker growing, allowing them to be grown and managed to yield greater quantities of wood more sustainably – although again, it's important to look for FSC accreditation. A little low-maintenance upkeep with a coat of wood preservative each year should ensure these hardwoods retain plenty of weather resistance.

HDPE or POLYWOOD Adirondack chairs

The most affordable Adirondack chairs are often made from plastic or resin due to the materials' affordability. Plastic also offers the ability to create furniture in a wide range of contemporary colors and offers a low-maintenance outdoor solution, with plastic resin not needing preservatives or painting like a wooden alternative, and offering a solution that doesn't crack or splinter over time. 

However basic models can be prone to discoloration when left out in the sun (look for UV-resistant options to counteract this) and, in our opinion, don't have as nice a feel to the touch as an organic material. There are also environmental implications, with plastic having a high environmental impact on its production, and being very difficult to dispose of safely at the end of a product's lifespan.

Unlike corrosive steel which relies on the powder-coating for protection, aluminum forms its own protective barrier, stopping moisture from penetrating its surface and making it a highly rust-resistant and weather-resistant metal. 

For this reason, aluminum patio furniture can be left outside all year round making it a super low maintenance option. It is however expensive. So although it can be well worth the investment for longevity, you're likely to have to pay a premium to score an aluminum Adirondack chair.

What to consider when shopping for the best sun lounger for your outside space

It's easy to get carried away by the desire to get outside and get comfortable when the sun starts to shine, but considering a few key points before you shop for a sun lounger will likely mean you make a wiser investment. 

First up, storage. 

Unless you're blessed with a super large outside space, it's unlikely you'll have room to leave your sun lounger set up all year round, and besides, most sun loungers, other than those made of more expensive rust-resistant aluminium or weather-resistant teak wood will need storing indoors during the worst of the winter weather to prolong their lifespan. As such storage requirements are likely to factor into your purchase. 

A folding sun lounger is a great option if storage space – whether in the garage, shed, or indoor in your apartment – is at a premium. And the added benefit of a foldable sun lounger is the ease with which you can pack it up, pick it up, and take it with you to the beach, park, or just easily transport it from storage to your balcony or patio space.

Investing in a (generally more expensive) aluminium-framed option will make a foldable sun lounger yet easier to move thanks to its super lightweight stucure in comparison to powder-coated steel or havier metals.

If you go for a solid sun lounger then it can be worth looking for stackable options to save on storage space, or recliners that dismantle into parts. 

Wheels will also make a solid sun lounger much easier to manoeuvre, whether that's to the shed for storage, or just to follow the rays around the garden.

Next up there are materials to consider.

Just bear in mind there will be some maintenance needed to prolong wooden garden furniture's lifespan, so factor in topping up with a wood preservative about once a year.

Most budget sun loungers are made with metal frames, with the cheapest options generally offering a powder-coated steel construction, and more expensive choices built from rust- and weather-resistant aluminium. Aluminium is generally the most durable choice, and benefits from being the much more lightweight metal, whereas more affordable steel will need careful storage to prevent rusting, but usually offers a more budget solution.

Then there's PE-rattan. Rattan garden furniture is always a timeless option for the garden, and the same can be said for a rattan sun lounger. As a plastic, PE-rattan, just like metal, is a low-maintenance solution that doesn't require any upkeep other than a quick brush down or soapy wash occasionally to clean off any dirt. In terms of longevity, its lifespan is largely determined by the metal used to construct the frame; aluminium providing the most outdoor durability, and steel likely to need more protection and storage away from the worst of the elements.

Is outdoor furniture waterproof? While some outdoor furniture sets are labeled waterproof, others aren't and you may be wondering whether that patio set you have your sights on will withstand rain and/or splashes from the swimming pool. 

It's one thing when you've got a compact, foldable bistro set – if it's beginning to rust or discolor, you can simply store it indoors. But it's a different story if your patio set is large and includes a sofa.

Even if you've bought a set from one of the best outdoor furniture stores around, it might suffer if it's not waterproof. We've asked experts to give their top tips for telling whether yours is waterproof – and what to do if it's not. 

So is patio furniture waterproof?

Is outdoor furniture waterproof? Here's how to tell

1. Check with the manufacturer

This is by far the most reliable way to tell if your outdoor furniture is waterproof. Rambabu Thapa, home decor and furniture specialist from Rustic Red Door,  recommends reading the manufacturer's documentation included with your furniture very carefully: 'many brands will include a description of the furniture's level of waterproofing, so you can make an informed decision about whether it's suitable for your needs.'

Having said that, it's not uncommon to buy furniture (especially on eBay or if you're buying second-hand) and not get any information with what you've bought. If contacting the manufacturer) not the retailer or seller, mind) is an option, do so. If you really can't get hold of anyone, and 'your outdoor furniture isn't explicitly described as waterproof, likely, it won't hold up to extended periods of rain or snow. In this case, it's a good idea to take your furniture inside during bad weather conditions to prevent any damage from happening.'

To avoid the problem of buying a furniture set without proper labeling/documentation, stick to getting your patio set from a respectable outdoor furniture store. 

2. Identify the material

Some manufacturer's may not provide information about the waterproof status of their outdoor furniture, but they should at least state what the furniture is made from. Aaron Lebowski, Certified Interior Designer at Juliei Salone, recommends particularly looking out for 'hardwoods, teak, acacia, resin wicker, and aluminum' as materials that have good water-resistant properties. 

Avoid untreated softwoods like pine (pressure-treated is fine), and, above all, natural rattan or wicker. Beautiful as those materials are, natural rattan and wicker will not be able to withstand rain at all and should be kept indoors. However, some of the best rattan garden furniture is made from a synthetic alternative – this is safe to use in the rain. 

Metal like steel and iron will rust unless painted with water-resistant paint. 

3. Check the cushions

Brad Schweig of Sunnyland Outdoor Living points out that 'when most customers ask if the furniture is waterproof they are referring to the cushions and how quick they dry.' While most outdoor furniture frames will be able to withstand some rain, soft padding that hasn't been designed for the outdoors will not dry and eventually grow mold. 

As Schweig explains, different manufacturers offer different solutions for cushions to make them better suited to the outdoors. Some cushions have reticulated foam filling, which means they 'will dry much faster than other cushions, although they're 'not as comfortable.'

'Some vendors use a waterproof bag to put around their cushion and others have different ways to either keep the moisture out or help them drain faster (such as vents under the seats).' 

The best way to find out if your outdoor cushions are waterproof or not is to simply test them out in the rain or by the pool. If they're still wet the next day, they're not suitable to be left outside in the rain. 

What should I do if my furniture isn't waterproof?

If you've discovered that your furniture is made from a non-waterproof material, don't panic. There are things you can do to make it more water-resistant. If you have wooden outdoor furniture, Lebowski recommends using 'linseed or tung oil to create a layer of protection, seal the wood with polyurethane, varnish, or lacquer, or waterproof the wood with a stain-sealant combo.'

Worried about those cushions? You can get waterproofing fabric spray (available on Amazon). 'Just make sure to do it when the furniture is clean and dry, and avoid spraying it close to plants or animals.'

Bear in mind that none of these methods will make your furniture completely waterproof, but it doesn't need to be. You're just making sure that the furniture repels most of the water, which is enough to prevent serious damage. 

Will rain ruin my outdoor furniture?

Lebowski reassures readers that 'most outdoor furniture won't be ruined by the rain because they are made to be outside and resist the elements. However, if you have organic wicker furniture, you should keep it indoors because it can quickly become damaged with outdoor use.'

If your furniture is too heavy to take inside, invest in good-quality outdoor furniture covers like these from Amazon. And you may reconsider using your patio set right next to the pool if you have one. 

Can you leave outdoor furniture outside all year?

The answer to that question depends a lot on the climate where you live. Thapa advocates for a cautious approach if you live in a climate where it rains and snows a lot: 'even weather-resistant furniture can become damaged if it is left out in the rain or snow for an extended period of time. If you live in a climate where rain and snow are common, it's important to take your furniture inside during bad weather conditions. This will help to preserve the life of your furniture and ensure that it remains to look its best for years to come.'

In other words, yes – if you live in a warm, mild climate where it doesn't rain too much. If you live in a climate with harsh winters, it's definitely a no. 

The best wicker outdoor furniture can give your backyard an exotic aesthetic and of course, something to sit on. From working from home in the sun, to hosting drinks or dinner, this material is known for its hardy and chic characteristics. 

While some of our favorite wicker fixtures are made from pliable stems of palm (aka 'real' rattan), some are manufactured using PE (polyethylene) rattan. The latter is

What is better: rattan or wicker?

Although the natural fiber is what inspired the rattan look we all love, the organic material doesn't hold up that well to life outdoors, instead needing protection from dampness and moisture, and to be shielded from direct sunlight and wind which can cause it to become brittle.

Plastic, as an alternative, is waterproof, UV-resistant, and frost-resistant, and requires very minimal maintenance in comparison, leading to it being favored by manufacturers for low-maintenance outdoor options.

The downside, of course, is that, unlike biodegradable natural rattan, most PE-rattan garden furniture is currently unrecyclable at the end of its lifespan. Although some advances are being made in repurposing single-use plastics for the manufacture of the polymers needed to create the furniture in the first place.

Opting for the most durable PE-rattan patio furniture your budget allows can, therefore, become an important way to minimize some of the environmental impacts of poly rattan furniture.

Is rattan and wicker garden furniture weatherproof?

It depends! To recap, 'PE-rattan' or polyurethane is waterproof, frost-resistant, and generally pretty weatherproof outdoors. However, this plastic polymer upper is given strength by a metal frame, and finding out what this frame is made from will give you a good indication of a PE-rattan patio set's long-term durability outdoors.

The most common frame options you're likely to come across are steel, powder-coated steel, or aluminum. Each of which performs quite differently outdoors, and has quite significant price differences. The most affordable rattan patio furniture will generally be made with a steel frame. This makes for heavier furniture, and you'll want to make sure you look for powder-coated steel. This is because steel is highly corrosive when it comes in contact with water, and the frame will rust quickly outdoors if moisture reaches the metal surface. 

This problem is 'solved' adding a thin layer of dry paint powder that's cured through an electrostatic process to form a hardwearing seal from the elements. The downside of this is that if that painted surface chips then rusting can occur quite quickly, so you'll need to repair any knocks to maintain that waterproof seal. Joints and fixings that are hard to thoroughly powder-coat and open to abrasion can also become a weak point, allowing moisture to penetrate and reducing furniture's lifespan.

As such, most manufacturers will recommend you store steel-framed rattan outdoor furniture in a sheltered environment during inclement weather to prolong its lifespan. This can be inconvenient if you don't have anywhere you can realistically store it inside. Plus, steel can be pretty heavy to move. A waterproof outdoor furniture cover (like this one from Amazon) will help to protect steel rattan furniture from the worst of the elements, although it's hard to prevent dampness from penetrating over time, so expect steel-framed options to have a shorter lifespan overall.

How to clean wicker and rattan patio furniture

If it's real rattan, try not to soak the rattan, and make sure it’s completely dry after cleaning. To clean between the awkward weaves, use a soft bristle brush (like these from Amazon) or an old toothbrush to get rid of dirt build-up. An expert tip is to use furniture polish (stock up on Pledge at Amazon) sparingly so the rattan keeps its shine!

How to make pallet furniture in 4 easy steps

We show you how to create a bench for indoors or out with two pallets. 

You will need:

• Wooden pallets: some DIY stores sell them or keep an eye out in skips and building sites – do ask permission before raiding though
• Paint roller: this Small roller and tray from Amazon is the ideal size
• Garden furniture chalk paint like Rust-Oleum's version or wood stain like Furniture Clinic's from Amazon (for outdoors)

1. Prep and paint the pallets 

If you have bought your pallets new you can just paint straight onto them using a roller. However, if you dug to the bottom for a skip for yours or it's a hand-me-down from a building site you might have to sand down any uneven surfaces or scrub away any dirt, then allow to dry before painting. 

Stir chalk paint thoroughly and then use a small roller to cover your pallets. You will probably need two to three coats for a solid finish. Go back in with a paintbrush too, to get any harder-to-reach areas.

2. Make the base of your pallet furniture 

To make the base of your pallet furniture, stack your pallets on top of one another to get your desired height. Then secure the pallets together using an electric drill and screws.

3. Add the back to your pallet furniture

Prop another pallet on the back of the base and drill it into place. 

4. Add some cushions 

Now it's just a case of adding some comfort and color with scatter cushions. You can actually find larger cushions that are made for pallet sofas – check out these ones from these seat cushions from Amazon.

Top tip: If you need more seating, you could pop two side by side or join two together at a right angle to make an L-shaped pallet sofa.

When it comes to choosing the best patio heater to suit your outdoor space – as well as your requirements – there are a few factors worth bearing in mind. These include:

For a start, the Gozney Roccbox has a charming (and utilitarian) design that comes with a strap for lifting it into the boot of the car, perfect for camping trips and summer holidays. It also has a silicone exterior that doesn't get too hot to touch, even when the pizza oven cavity is well over 200 degrees centigrade. 

We tested it several times over the course of a month or so using pizza-obsessed pre-teens as our taste judges. 

Roccbox unboxing and set-up

All of the Roccbox components come in a single box and it’s (just about) shiftable by one person. Design is one of the Roccbox’s great strengths, and the kit is well packaged and efficiently engineered. On first impression, the individual elements are sturdy, well produced and neatly presented. 

The first thing you notice is also one of Roccbox’s bigger attractions – you get a hopper for a wood-fired oven but also a gas burner so it can be converted into a gas pizza oven should you feel the need. Real flexibility and, even better, easy to interchange. They simply lock onto the underside of the oven with a simple bayonet-style fitting. 

From initial unboxing to getting it ready to fire with wood took no longer than 10 minutes. 

Kids = excited and not yet getting even remotely hungry.

Firing up the Roccbox: ease of use and portability

The Roccbox comes with a carry-strap which fits around the oven like a belt. I didn’t fully trust it but as the legs fold in and the Roccbox is relatively light, it’s still easy to transport. We plonked it on one of our outside dining tables and, in true dad fashion, completely ignored the instruction to only put kiln-dried hardwood into the hopper, using scraps from a recent house renovation. 

First firing was, as a result, not entirely successful. We live in a valley and enjoy a brisk northern breeze onto the patio – and that day was one of those days. A few finger-length chunks of old softwood and a firelighter proved no match for our breeze and it must have taken 15 minutes or so to get the fire going with any degree of certainty. I’m a woodburner owner so know my way around building a fire – but the Roccbox held little truck for my skills. 

Eventually, however, we had consistent fire. The temperature display on the side is clear and colour coded, showing that the Roccbox needed to get to 300˚C to really produce the kind of pizza you’re dreaming of.

Our first attempt to get up to temperature was unsuccessful, thanks to, I reckon, the softwood we used and that stiff Northerly. It stayed consistently at around 200˚C. For the next go, we bought in some specific pizza oven-friendly wood chunks – a mix of oak and applewood (available from eBay in a bag which costs around £10 for a bag lasting at least a dozen firings). This helped with getting the temperature up more quickly, but our pesky breeze meant that we still struggled to see temperatures above 220˚C, despite our best efforts. 

We spoke to Roccbox about this and it was clear that you need a still, calm area to achieve the kind of temperatures that Roccbox works best at. 

Kids = getting a trifle peckish. Dad = under pressure.

What are the pizzas like?

Simply, pizzas made in this oven taste way better than shop or standard delivery alternatives, and just as good as the artisanal pizzas you’ll find from vendors with their own pizza oven. The two main secrets to the slightly charred, bubbling, thin crusty pizza your mouth is watering to right now are a) a very high temperature and b) a thin, reactive dough. 

On the former, even getting the oven up to 200˚C produced far better results than I would have had from simply chucking a pizza stone in a regular gas oven; the dough bubbled and charred nicely at the edges and the mozzarella had the slightly burnt, bubbled skin too. 

Even at the relatively low temperatures I achieved, the pizza was delicious – at 300˚C+ it must be heaven for pizza fans. The pizzas cooked in around five minutes – at 300˚C they claim to cook in around a minute. 

Kids = full. And agree 'it’s the best pizza ever!'. Dad = off the hook.

How does the Roccbox score on looks?

Roccbox is very much marketed to the design conscious, and it certainly hits the mark. It doesn’t have the faux-Mediterranean stylings of home-built ovens, and the (completely safe) outer casing comes in grey or green colour options. It’s a great-looking piece of kit, and the good design is just as much about the engineering, too. Simply put, you won’t find something that looks cooler on the patio.

Value for money

At £499 this costs a lot of dough and is a long-term investment – particularly given the additional cost of the type of wood that the Roccbox deserves. Over 10 summers’ worth of pizza partying, it more than pays off, but you’ll need to be serious pizza fans to make sense of it economically. It’s a touch cheaper than other options and a smarter design, too.

The Roccbox pizza oven: a summary

If you can make sure you’ve got the patience and positioning to overcome any worries on getting the oven up to temperature, this oven produces perfect pizzas on demand. Because the oven burns so high, it needs very little maintenance (everything is effectively incinerated) so this is a fun piece of kit that take your patio weekends up to another level. It's not just for pizza either – use it as you would an oven to create an outdoor kitchen for summer parties.

Invest in a stand mixer to make dough production easy – the Roccbox is really only as good as your willingness to work with it, and produce perfect dough. In other words, it can’t be topped.

Styling an outdoor rug is just about choosing the right one for your space. (Or, if you're leaning into the Scandi trend of layering textures for depth and style, you can layer up multiple outdoor rugs — the more the merrier!)

"I would suggest, when choosing an outdoor rug, consider the size and shape of your space," explains Raf Michalowski, Interior Designer and founder of Meble Furniture. "For larger areas, opt for a round or oval rug to create a cozy conversation area. For smaller spaces, use a long runner to make the most of the space." 

Raf goes on to advise against skimping on size when it comes to choosing your outdoor rug, "Never go for a rug that is too small for your space, as it will make the area look cluttered. For instance, if the outdoor space is 5x7 feet, choose a rug that is at least 4x6 feet." 

What rugs are the best all year round? 

I'm a low-maintenance girly and the less trudging my outdoor rug in and out I can do, the better. However, sometimes, (for jute and sisal) I'm willing to bend my rules. Basically, it's important to understand that some rug materials are just simply not suited to the "rain or shine" lifestyle... and that's okay. 

"Polypropylene and synthetic fibers are two of the best options for all-weather outdoor rugs, as they are highly resistant to moisture and fading. Look for low-pile rugs that won't mat down in the rain, and opt for UV-resistant colors to ensure that your rug will last for years," explains Raf. 

In contrast, Raf proposes that natural fiber rugs, such as jute, should be styled in the shade of your balcony or backyard to reduce color fading. I'm going to stand ten toes down and declare my love for jute outdoor rugs, but I admit if you're looking for that all-year-round durability, synthetic outdoor rugs should be on your radar. 

What to consider when buying an outdoor rug

If you are deciding between the two – the B&Q egg chair and the Aldi version – then we can help make your decision.

The B&Q egg chair is in stock now – the Aldi one isn't and we are not sure when it next will be.

The Aldi egg chair is admittedly cheaper than the B&Q one, at £159.99, but it only comes with a three-year warranty. The B&Q egg chair has a five-year warranty.

The B&Q egg chair has a larger seating space than the Aldi one – you could possibly even fit two people on the B&Q egg chair, but the Aldi one is just big enough to seat one person. The B&Q one is also large enough to be used for lounging.

The Aldi egg chair is on a hanging frame. Though this frame can hold up to 100kg in weight, this isn't the most sturdy, especially if someone less-able wants to sit on this chair – it will move as you are sitting on it. Saying that, the kids will love it! The B&Q equivalent sits firmly on the floor with four legs.

What’s the secret to reviving rattan furniture?

Ryan Schwarze, outdoor furniture expert at Luxury Rattan, has shared a genius (and inexpensive) tip for treating tired-looking rattan surfaces — use olive oil. 

“If you have an old piece of rattan furniture that is looking worse for wear, I would recommend using a soft cloth and rubbing some olive oil onto the product," says Schwarze. "This will reduce cracking and add shine to your rattan, making it look as good as new.”

Did you know that older and lower-quality rattan can crack over time? This is especially true if it’s been exposed to the elements for an extended period of time. And, over time it can also begin to lose its color. 

According to the experts, the trick to reviving old rattan furniture is to use a small amount of olive oil to clean and buff it. Brb, just running to the store. 

A li'l bit of olive oil should add protection to rattan, as well as help to remove dirt and grime. The oil is also great for repairing and conditioning the fibers. 

How to use olive oil on rattan furniture?

Step 1: Take a clean microfiber cloth and dab it with olive oil 

Step 2: Gently rub the olive oil-soaked cloth across each piece of furniture, being careful not to saturate it. 

Step 3: Leave the olive oil to soak into the rattan, softening and conditioning it. 

Step 4: Use a clean microfiber cloth to gently rub over the furniture, removing any excess olive oil.

Ina Garten has recently shared an Instagram post about entertaining outdoors during the fall months, and we want to copy everything about her outdoor dining area. 

It's cozy and inviting – and very well planned for social distancing. With a few carefully thought-out detailing, it's perfectly possible to enjoy your patio or garden when the weather gets chilly. And we all know that food tastes better outdoors (well, that's our theory anyway), so why not give it a go and create your own welcoming outdoor dining nook?

1. Fill the table with flowers and candle to help guests feel closer

As Garten explains, spacing out chairs for social distancing can make people feel a little isolated; a great way to make them feel like they're close to each other is by filling the center of the dining table with plenty of fresh flowers and candles or lanterns. The effect is like an outdoor hearth round which the guests have gathered to spend time together. It gives the table arrangement more focus.

2. Blankets and a patio heater are a must 

Fall is chilly! If you're planning to spend more than half an hour outdoors, you will need to keep everyone warm. Fortunately, there are ways to do this stylishly. Not all patio heaters are ugly: some look like table lamps or floor lamps and will give the outdoor area the coveted outdoor living look. Fire pits are also very useful for conjuring up a cozy atmosphere and keeping everyone warm. Mix and match blankets of different textures for a slightly boho, on-trend look. 

3. Keep the cooking to a minimum 

If a food celebrity advises you to take it easy on the cooking front, you'd better listen up: Garten says that because serving food outdoors is more difficult than indoors, it makes sense to keep food prep to a minimum. So, think ready-made canapes, a cheese board, and a pizza or simple salad. If you have a pizza oven, you can cook homemade pizzas outdoors without needing to even turn on the oven in the kitchen.
