<dc:description>
About Me:
Hello! My name is Aida M. Toro and I am a freelance writer that loves cultivating stories about amazing people, fashion, interiors, art, and food. I currently write for Harper’s Bazaar Vietnam, The House Magazine, Hobnob Magazine, The C-Word, and Real Homes. I live in West New York, New Jersey, which is literally a 10-minute ferry ride or 20-minute bus ride away from New York City. Although I was born and raised in West New York, I consider NYC my home, as I believe it to be the place where all dreams come to fruition, and of course, spend most of my time in. When I’m not writing, I love perusing the city streets and taking snaps with my iPhone of street art along with random things, scoping out new restaurants as well as their spaces, shopping at some of my favorite stores, spending time with family and friends, walking my cockapoodle Benji, and working out at Lifetime or DOGPOUND, which are some of the top fitness spaces in Manhattan and overall the U.S.

My Niches:

I’m all about a space that catches my attention. Whether it be someone’s apartment, a gym, a restaurant/cocktail bar, a hotel, boutique, etc…It’s all about the details.

Why listen to me?

I’ve interviewed prominent interior designers in the game, who I’ve continued my relationships with. In addition, I attend many media preview tastings at some of Manhattan’s most coveted restaurants and beyond. I also love traveling and staying at unique hotel spaces because I gain inspiration to write and create. FYI, all of these restaurants and hotel spaces I visit have Insta-worthy interior elements. To add on, I love a sleek, chic, yet industrial gym space because motivation for training will come along.

About my Real Home…

I currently live with my parents in their two-floor brownstone, which was originally a two-family home and is the only brick house on the block. The downstairs floor has a study/lounge room, an immense quality portrait of my big quinceanera party hanging on the wall, and it's a space where I watch television and get all of my writing done. The kitchen is painted in pastel yellow, has two vintage paintings hung on two walls, and a long pure wood dining room table that was bought at Arhaus.

My room is painted in a very light peach color. In my room, you’ll find my barn-style bed set from Pottery Barn. I have a mechanical mattress, which is one of the most amazing things you’ll find in my room because you can use the control to lift up the mattress in case you want to get work done or just watch a movie.

My fave home buys

One of my favorite home buys at the moment is my Alo Yoga Aura Diffuser. The diffuser humidifies my space with a cool mist, which is something I look forward to prior to going to sleep because I meditate and just feel refreshed with the scent while I am breathing in and out.

I am currently working on

The next project on my horizon is to move out of my parents' place into a condo or townhouse where I could decorate Memphis style. I really love that everything there is all about the '80s. I would also throw in some urban modern design into my home decor, since I’m such a city girl. Lastly, I’d love to live in a home located in the Hudson County/Bergen County area, which are counties close to Manhattan, local highways, and more so we'll be well connected!

Hold on! There may be things you can't recycle floating around in your recycling bins. Recycling housewares is a great way to help the environment, but there are a few things to know before you get started.

Certain items you have lying around at home could actually be repurposed instead of thrown in the garbage. Overall, it’s a win-win for everyone involved!

I spoke to an expert, who rounded up some home items that shouldn't be recycled and what to do with them rather than tossing them into the recycling bin.

7 things you can't recycle

While you may have all the best intentions when recycling goods around your house, there are actually some things that don't belong in there. We break down what to do with items you can't recycle, from household essentials to electronics and more.

1. Textiles

Textiles and fabric, whether clothing curtains or duvet covers, can’t be recycled in the curbside recycling system. Curbside recycling systems can only handle paper, plastic, metal, and glass materials. Because textiles are made of totally different materials like cotton, wool, and polyester, they need an entirely specialized channel to recycle.

Few cities have textile recycling programs today, but New York City and select others are making strides to provide more access. Certain brands like Patagonia, H&M, and Uniqlo offer recycling drop-off programs in-store today and we can always donate usable textile items in the meantime.

When it comes to bedding, natural materials like linen and cotton (like these 100% cotton bedsheets from H&M) tend to be a more eco-friendly choice than synthetic materials like polyester.

2. Electronics

While our homes are chock full of electronics, from our TV remotes to kitchen appliances, they cannot be recycled in US curbside recycling systems. One reason is that they are complex mixes of materials. Electronics use different metals and plastics, as well as rare earth minerals, battery components, and LED screens.

"Because they are constructed in such a complicated way, they require specialty drop-off programs to be recycled, which can be found at many retailers like Best Buy and Verizon," said Economy Professional and Recycling Expert Charlotte Dreizen.

3. Tanglers

“Tanglers” are really tricky contaminants for recycling facilities. They can be any long, winding product ranging from a garden hose to a computer charger to a strand of string lights to plastic bags.

"These items wrap around the very first piece of equipment at a recycling facility whose job is to separate the paper from all other materials," explained Dreizen. "When that equipment gets all jammed up with tanglers, recycling facilities have to shut down for workers to cut them out using box cutters, which is dangerous business!"

Most tanglers have to be trashed, but many plastic bags like takeout bags can be brought to store-drop offs at grocery stores and retailers like IKEA, Target, and Walmart. Try to invest in some high-quality products, like these Room Essentials string lights from Target, that you're going to use year after year.

4. Paper towels

"Since we can recycle paper almost universally, many people think they can recycle paper towels because they’re also made from trees," said Dreizen. "But, paper towels can’t be recycled because they are so soft and flimsy that they can’t be sorted in recycling facilities."

We also need our recyclables to be clean and dry, so most paper towels that we’re using to wipe up spills or clean our kitchen counters would be contaminated with food or moisture. Instead, we can recycle paper towels in most composting programs, if you have access to one, as long as they don’t have harsh cleaners on them!

You can cut back on your waste overall by switching to reusable paper towels, like these FEBU reusable dishcloths available on Amazon.

5. Propane tanks

"Now that we’re winding down the season where we’re barbecuing in the backyard, a lot of people have empty propane tanks to contend with," said Dreizen.

Luckily, most communities have opportunities to refill propane tanks at gas stations or hardware stores which help us keep reusing propane tanks for a long time. When a propane tank is ready to be discarded, it’s always best to bring it to your community’s household hazardous waste drop-off. Because they still contain small amounts of fuel, they can be dangerous fire-starters if placed into the recycling system!

6. Furniture

"The vast majority of furniture can’t be recycled in our curbside system today, either because it’s not made of a material that the recycling system can handle or its size," expressed Dreizen.

"Our recycling system was designed to handle bottles and jars and boxes and items that are much larger and are simply too big for recycling equipment to handle, no matter what it’s made of."

But, furniture can often be made from a mix of materials like textiles, metal or wood frames, adhesives, and foam, which render it unrecyclable in the curbside system.

Some communities have dedicated recycling programs established for furniture, but it’s always best to repair or donate when at all possible!

7. Batteries

Much like propane tanks, many kinds of batteries can also cause fires and explosions in the recycling system.

Lithium batteries, as well as lithium-ion (otherwise known as rechargeable) batteries, are frequent culprits and should always be brought to dedicated battery recycling or household hazardous waste drop-offs.

Battery recycling programs can be found at many hardware stores and by searching for your nearest location at call2recycle.org.

Meet the expert

FAQs

How can I cut back on waste overall?

Reducing your waste output starts with investing in quality products you're not going to have to throw out in a few months or years to begin with. Next time you're shopping for sustainable decor buys look for natural materials and quality craftsmanship.

How do I dispose of household items?

If you're unsure if you can recycle something, look for any symbols or instructions on the packaging. When in doubt, you can always contact the company to inquire about how to properly dispose of the item, or call your local waste management service to see if they'll take it. Items like cleaning supplies should have instructions on the label for guidance.

Reducing our overall waste and disposing of items properly is just one of many small changes we can make to live more sustainably. Implement more eco-friendly tips into your daily routine and you'll really start to feel the difference.

Kara Thompson is a Denver-based journalist with over five years of experience writing lifestyle content. She has written for a variety of publications, including townandcountrymag.com, elledecor.com, goodhousekeeping.com, and Parents, where she covered all things home, food, fashion, travel, and holidays. During her time on staff at Parents, Kara launched her own home decor and organization column named Save My Space. In 2022, she left her full-time job as an editor and started her own writing, editing, and social media firm, Kara Thompson and Co.

Tennis, New York City, bourbon cocktails, and her sister's German Shepherd are a few of her favorite things.

About my home/style:

Having lived in California, Oregon, New York, and Colorado, Kara has picked up on many different interior design trends and styles. She has also had to conform her style to different living situations—a ranch-style home, midtown high-rise condo, and a cozy carriage house. Her mom has always been obsessed with all things interiors, so Kara grew up with an appreciation for timeless design and a keen eye. She gravitates toward classic, neutral design and finds herself frequently bouncing decor ideas off of her mom and sister. Because Kara moved every year since graduating college, she also knows a thing or two about home organization (she might even be a little bit like Monica from Friends when it comes to cleanliness).
</dc:description>

Living in a dorm room can be tough, but freezing your ass off shouldn't be one of them. Plus, if this is your first time living away from home, you want to do everything you can to make your new living space cozy AF.

Since so many college campuses don’t allow students to use space heaters, it can be particularly challenging to make your dorm feel warmer during the winter months. However, with these smart strategies and design hacks, you can make your room feel comfy despite the freezing cold weather.

Here, you’ll find practical tips for making your dorm room feel like a warm oasis (vacay, anyone?) Plus, we’re sharing some of our favorite finds to hunker down and stay toasty with.

1. Invest in a cozy rug

One of the first elements to consider when you’re living in a cold environment is the type of flooring in your space. Flooring is often overlooked, but it can make a big impact on your overall living experience. If you’re assigned a dorm room that has concrete, tile, or wood floors, it’s likely that your feet will be the first part of your body to feel cold.

To combat that experience, invest in a cute dorm rug that will provide some extra comfort and warmth during the winter. Fabrics like wool, nylon, and polyester are all smart choices when dealing with less-than-ideal temperatures.

2. Make smart bedding choices

There’s nothing more frustrating than being too hot or too cold while you’re trying to fall asleep. When temps drop and you want your sleep area to feel extra cozy, consider swapping your dorm bedding.

Cotton, wool, down, and down alternative bedding are all good materials to use when setting your bed up for a cool season. Make sure your sheets, mattress topper, duvet, comforter, or quilt are made with those fabrics to ensure you stay snug while catching your z’s.

3. Keep plenty of blankets on hand

Who doesn’t love a good throw blanket? They’re useful, affordable, and they add a comfy vibe to a living space. While you don’t want to create clutter in your dorm, having a few quality blankets will help you stay warm during the winter.

The keyword here is “few.” Rather than hoarding 10 cheap throws, splurge on two to three that are high-quality — they’ll not only hold up well over time but they’ll actually keep you warm as opposed to blankets that are made with inexpensive materials.

Another option to consider? Weighted blankets, which can be especially helpful when you’re feeling chilly.

4. Use closet staples to your advantage

Sometimes there’s only so much a blanket can do. For moments when you need to be up and moving around in your space (or for when the weather is especially unpleasant), resort to your closet staples to keep you warm.

Layer your favorite wool socks, throw on your UGG boots, or wrap yourself up in your best bathrobe to make the elements a little more bearable.

5. Be strategic with the headboard you choose

A metal headboard is a no-go when it comes to living in cool climates. To guarantee the warmest possible experience, opt for bed frames and headboards that are made with plush materials.

There are plenty of fabric dorm headboards that are cute, comfy, and budget-friendly, just be sure to steer clear of leather since that can also feel chilly.

6. Don’t underestimate good lighting

Warm versus cool lighting often comes down to personal preference, however, it can also impact the way your space feels. When dealing with cool temperatures, warm lighting can offer the sense of a cozier space.

While this is more of a mental swap than anything, don’t underestimate its power. Adding table lamps, floor lamps, and nightlights that all have warm colored bulbs can create the illusion of a more welcoming and temp-controlled atmosphere.

                                                                <dc:description>
About Louise

Hello! I’m Louise, the ecommerce editor at Real Homes. I joined the other side of the desk in April 2022, after previously being in PR and communications. With the rest of the team, I write shopping content and reviews for homeware items that’ll add both a decorative and practical edge to your space. With an eye for design that won’t snooze on style, but a budget that won’t quite stretch, I love nothing more than a designer dupe. From colored glassware to contemporary furniture and bedding, I'm after items that will upgrade my plain rented flat. Otherwise, you’ll find me at an art gallery, exploring the latest exhibition, or enjoying a cocktail at one of London’s coolest bars and restaurants.

My niche(s)

After managing PR efforts for a luxury bedding brand, I now specialize in sleep content, so you can wind down well. Knowing the importance of getting a great night’s sleep, I bring my bedding expertise to writing buying guides, reviews, and news on the best sleep and wellness buys, including what to look for, when, and where to buy, so you can get your best sleep yet. But I believe your sleep setup shouldn’t have to break the bank either. From bed frames to mattresses to protectors, I’m your go-to for finding bedroom upgrades, on a budget.

Why listen to me?

My knack for writing and interest in interiors grew from my love for art. I studied for an undergraduate degree in contemporary art, where my practice considered how artwork can amplify a room or space. From reviewing and critiquing artworks, I then pursued a master's degree in international journalism, putting aside the paintbrush and instead putting pen to paper. It wasn't until I landed a PR position in the homeware industry that I learned everything there is to know about ecommerce, especially about what to look for when shopping online for your next bedding buy. Eager to share with Real Homes' readers, I'm now brimming with useful sleep content, so you can choose the best sleep products for you.

About my Real Home…

Having recently moved to London, I’m currently sharing a furnished three-bed flat with friends. With an appreciation for modern styles with an emphasis on symmetry, I find comfort in balance and clean lines — some might call it a form of feng shui. My home is generally minimalist with sleek black furniture and metal finishes.

My fave home buys

Luckily, I’ve not been totally restricted to standard furniture and renter rules that prohibit anything on the walls. I have managed to add my stamp with modern decor, such as glass bedside table lamps, an acrylic desk chair, and of course, great bedding. I love my Piglet in Bed striped linen set; it looks and feels great all year round.

On my to-buy list

An acrylic magazine rack (or a few) to hold my out-of-hand print collection is next on my wish list. I’m always on the lookout for sleek storage solutions that’ll keep my home well-organized. Tidy room, tidy mind, right?

I’m currently working on…

With the January sales just around the corner, I’m currently scoping out the best deals on, you guessed it, all-things bedding. This includes the best mattress, duvets, pillows, and more. Having a background in art, my shopping skills don’t stop at bed sheets. With an eye for design (and a minimal budget), I’m also looking for some chic but cheap home decor pieces you won't think twice about treating yourself to.
</dc:description>

If you've ever had to lug your sopping wet comforter out of the washer and hang it on the line, you'll know how heavy they are. And how long they take to dry. Honestly, I did this in the summer and waited a good three days for my duvet to properly dry off. Big mistake. I was left without any covers for a few nights (because I had an all-season option) and a limp duvet that had lost its fluff.

Whether you've got a luxe down duvet you've invested your savings in or a lightweight synthetic comforter you picked up on sale, knowing how to care for one is key. Yes, you can dry your duvet in the dryer, but putting it in a drum that's too small or on too high of a heat setting can cause material damage. Leaving it out in the sun isn't the best either.

So you don't make the same error I did, I spoke to some experts for their tips on how to dry a comforter without it bunching, lumping, or shrinking. Follow these simple steps to make the drying process a whole lot quicker and easier. The best tip includes a tumble dryer and tennis balls. Unlike washing your sheets, which requires a quick read of the care label and setting the washer to the correct settings, drying your duvet takes a little more human power. But you'll be pleased to know that you don't have to clean your duvet as often as you have to wash its cover. Washing and drying your duvet about once a month is recommended.

Note: If you're wanting to dry your duvet in the dryer, make sure the drum is big enough. Comforters can be large and bulky and will need enough room to effectively spin and rinse in your machine. If your at-home machine is small, try taking it to the local laundromat. I'll also be using the terms duvet and comforter interchangeably throughout this step-by-step guide.

Here's what you'll need

A dryer with a large capacity drum for bigger duvets and comforters

Dryer balls, like these natural wool dryer balls from Amazon (or some tennis balls if you have them)

A laundry line/rack

1. Check the type of comforter

Before you chuck your comforter into the dryer, make sure to check the type you have. The two most common types of duvets are natural (e.g. feather-filled or made of down) or synthetic, which is typically made of polyester or fiberfill. No matter which comforter you have, you can dry all material types by machine. But be sure to read the laundry symbols on the care label as temperature and spin speed will differ by material — with some high tog options being dry clean only.

2. Put the comforter in the dryer

A simple step, yes, but there are some crucial details. When putting your comforter in the dryer, spread out the material as much as possible. As Parima Ijaz, founder of Pure Parima, states "A big concern people have when it comes to cleaning their comforter is losing its fluff and plushness — the whole reason you use a comforter in the first place!" Adding a few dryer balls or tennis balls too will balance the weight and "help to keep the fluff evenly distributed to avoid ending up with a flat comforter that no longer carries volume."

3. Select a low temperature setting

Jonathon Reckles, vice president of marketing at CD One Price Cleaners, and several other experts suggest using a "lower heat setting." Even if your dryer does have a large drum, a big comforter may get stuck. If on a higher temperature setting, the duvet could get too hot, and potentially burn. Reckles notes that using a low heat setting "may take a couple of cycles, but that's okay." You can always check the label if you're unsure as they'll usually have a recommended drying temperature.

4. Hit pause and shake

This is where drying your comforter can get a little tedious. But trust me: follow this step especially and you'll have a duvet that's clean, dry, and cozy AF. Either set a timer on your phone or the machine itself for 20 to 30 minutes and take out your comforter to give it a physical fluff. Shaking out your comforter by hand will "ensure there's equal distribution of filling for a quick, and balanced dry," says Reckles.

5. Continue drying on a clothes line

Don't stress if your comforter is taking more than a couple of cycles to get dry. Especially if you have a weighty feather-filled or down comforter, you can expect the drying time to take a while. Once your duvet is almost dry — too damp to put on the bed, but dry enough not to warrant another cycle — then finish the job using a clothesline or laundry drying rack.

FAQs

How to dry a comforter without a dryer

Not everyone has a dryer. In fact, most rentals tend to come with a washer only (annoying, IKR), but that doesn't mean you can't dry your comforter. In fact, drying your washing naturally is less damaging to your duvet and better on your energy bills and the environment.

To dry your comforter without a dryer, set up a clothesline or drying rack in a warm dry place, inside or out.

</dc:description>

If you've found yourself subbing out iced lattes and light jackets for hot drinks and big coats, it's clear that winter is coming, whether you like it or not. While we can deal with umbrellas and boots, switching out summer duvets for enormous winter bed covers, with higher tog ratings, feels a bit extreme.

James Higgins, the CEO of sustainable bedding company Ethical Bedding has taken a look at temperature stats over the past two years to reveal what he thinks is the best, exact date, to switch to your best duvet for winter this year. But is there any truth in it and what tog should you go for at this time of year? We investigate.

Why and when to change to a winter duvet?

Looking at UK weather reports by Statista, there has been a steady rise in UK average daily temperatures since the 1960s.

Despite this, when the seasons change, there are still significant drops in temperature, and Higgins notes that the figures for 2021 show that average daily temperatures fell by 25 per cent from August (16.1 degrees Celsius) to October (12.1 degrees Celsius). Whether you sleep hot or cold, that big difference will be noticeable come bed time.

As a result, this year Higgins thinks swapping out your duvet earlier could be wise, 'We would advise that people looking to swap their duvet tog a little earlier in preparation, which would be Sunday 25th September.'

'The 25th is the ideal date to swap your duvet tog as it's a couple of days before a predicted and historically recorded average temperature drop. As a Sunday it's also a great day to get your house into order before the week ahead and you won't be caught off guard for any large climate changes towards the end of the month.'

'The best two togs to take into the winter months are usually a 7 or a 10.5. The best tog for you entirely depends on the type of sleeper you are. If you are naturally a warm sleeper or have a smaller, cozy, room that retains heat, then a 7 is enough to take you into the colder months. If you have a larger or draughty room then a 10.5 might be the best fit. The difference between the two togs is the thickness of the filing in your duvet and sometimes the material. Polyester is a more breathable material so you may need a higher tog to get the same effect to the likes of down feather which retains heat better, and requires a less intense tog level.'

Need some recommendations?

<p class='vanilla-image-block' data-bordeaux-image-check style='padding-top:100.00%';>

Simba Hybrid Duvet with Stratos

The best duvet

Tog: 10.5
Filling: Recycled PET bottles
Cover: 100% cotton
Sizes: Single, double, king, super king
Wash: 40°C
Tumble dry: Low

Real Homes rating: 5 out of 5 stars

<p class='vanilla-image-block' data-bordeaux-image-check style='padding-top:100.00%';>

Woolroom Organic Wool Duvet

The best duvet for winter

Tog: 7–10 tog equivalent
Filling: 100% organic British wool
Material: 100% unbleached organic cotton
Sizes: Single, double, king, super king, emperor
Wash: 30°C
Dry: Do not tumble dry

Real Homes rating: 5 out of 5 stars

<p class='vanilla-image-block' data-bordeaux-image-check style='padding-top:100.00%';>

Eve the warm: cool Duvet

The best all-season duvet

Tog: 1 x 10.5 tog and 1 x 4.5 tog
Filling: Hollow fibre
Material: 100% cotton
Sizes: Double, king, super king
Wash: 40°C
Tumble dry: Low

Real Homes rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Outside vs inside temperature

But should we be more focused on the temperature of your actual home, and bedroom more specifically? After all, with the cost of living crisis in our minds, we're all thinking twice about switching the heating on, if at all, which as a result will impact how cool our bedrooms are at night, especially if upgrading home insulation is out of the question.

According to Dormeo, one of Europe's most trusted bedding brands, 'A 13.5 tog winter duvet is perfect for the colder months, depending on how low the temperature drops in your bedroom overnight.'

Dormeo encourages you to maintain a bedroom temperature of 18–21 degrees overnight also and to increase your bedding tog to 15 when your home gets colder.

As for the date of when to do this, if you're trying to reduce energy costs, as Higgins implies, perhaps the earlier the better.

What our bedding expert says

'There is no set rule when it comes to switching your duvet for the season,' says Louise Oliphant, eCommerce writer and sleep expert at Real Homes.

'Aside from basing this on when the weather changes, I’d recommend swapping out your summer bedding for more cold weather-appropriate pieces when you find yourself becoming chillier at night.'

'Rather than reaching for your itchy blankets at the back of the cupboard or putting on an extra pair of socks to sleep in, having in a winter duvet should be first on your to-do list.'

Tog talk

Oliphant explains: 'It’s true, thicker duvets of higher tog ratings can make all the difference to keeping you toasty at night. Tog refers to how effectively a duvet can retain heat, so opting for a duvet of around 10.5 tog in the coldest of months will provide the extra insulation you need. So don’t wait until Christmas comes, as soon as you’re not getting your best sleep, invest in one of the best duvets for winter.'

There are other factors to consider also, such as the size of your room and ventilation. So if you have a small bedroom design, and prefer a warmer room, the snug dimensions could be favorable.

'If you have quite a small room or a room with only one window, it is easier for heat to become trapped overnight meaning you may not need as thick a duvet tog as those with larger, more draughty rooms. In this case, I’d advise sleeping with a tog of 7 instead of 10.5 as it will better help your body control temperatures in a smaller space.' Adds Higgins.

If you're strapped for cash, layering soft throws can be a good stopgap. While, if your budget permits, consider investing in a complete fall bedding set to cozy up your space furthermore.

Of course, if you're particularly chilly an electric blanket could be a great choice. And keep an eye on the weather and temperature either via an app on your smartphone – or get Alexa (or another smart speaker), to do the work for you!

How to shop for the right tog

When shopping duvets, it can be helpful to know what the different tog ratings mean. The scale ranges from 1 to 15, with 1 being very cool and 15 being the warmest – most duvets start at 4.5 FYI.

Here, Higgins outlines the five most popular tog ratings so you can see which one suits your sleep style.

4.5 tog – a 4.5 tog rating is designed to keep you cool at night, and is ideal for anyone who suffers from night sweats.

7 tog – a 7.0 tog rating is still on the cooler end, but offers a little more warmth if your room is air-conditioned or you keep a fan on at night. It’s also ideal for when the temperature begins to start fluctuating between seasons and is often chosen for year-round bedding.

10.5 tog – slightly warmer, a 10.5 tog rating continues to offer enough insulation to keep you toasty when it’s cold without becoming unbearable in the heat.

13.5 tog – 13.5 tog rated duvet is ideal for cold-weather bedding, but might become a little too much when the temperature starts to crank up. Consider buying a cooler quilt that you can swap over for summer.

15 tog – 15 is the highest tog duvet rating, and, again, might feel a bit too much in the heat. You should almost definitely consider buying a thinner duvet, so you have a cooler option.

                                                                <dc:description>

</dc:description>

From everything for your bedroom to kitchen appliances and cookware, it can be easy to buy too much. But the trick is to tick off a checklist of essentials before you go. After all, there are plenty of places to buy cheap home decor from to make your room a little more you, once you've moved in. Already thinking about it? Then check out these uni room ideas, to add some personality to your student digs.

For now, students will definitely need new bedding, dinnerware, a sturdy saucepan set and plenty of cleaning supplies to keep your place in good condition for when relatives come to visit. And whilst it's typical to buy the cheapest bundles online, consider going for better value buys that'll last you a little longer and look great too. This way you'll have your halls feeling like home in no time.

What shall I bring to university?

Figuring out what you need, and what you don't when buying your uni essentials can be a little confusing. And many digs even come with a sweeping brush and mop bucket. But this isn't mandatory.

Also bear in mind you can always wait until you get there for some non-essential items, and consider splitting the cost between flatmates for shared things such as an ironing board and iron.

How we chose these uni essentials

Most of these uni essentials are the best affordable or value for money buys from our buying guides. So they've been tried and tested to make sure they balance out on price and quality. Otherwise, they're brand favourites and best-sellers you can rely on, like Flash's speed mop or Command Strips. A bedding expert has revealed the exact date to swap your duvet tog so you can enjoy the best sleep possible.

James Higgins, CEO of sustainable bedding company Ethical Bedding says April 2nd is the ideal time to pack away your winter duvet.

Bedding from Undercover Living (Image credit: Undercover)

The exact date to change your duvet tog

'Waiting to change your duvet until there’s a heatwave is going to leave you stressed out and probably already a few days short on sleep,' warns James. He says April 2nd is the perfect time to make the switch from a winter thickness of 10.5-15 togs, to a summer one (4.5-7 togs).

Firstly, every year, things hot up significantly as we enter April. James notes that the week moving from March to April shows around a 28% increase in average daily temperatures.

The 28% increase is based on data on the average daily temperatures from March to April over the last seven years in the UK. So if all of a sudden, the temperature is almost a third higher, it can make a huge difference to the heat retention in your bedroom, particularly in smaller boudoirs.

Not only are we reaching a much warmer season, but a heatwave is also predicted in the UK, which could last from the 1st until the 15th of April. 'We would advise that people take to swap their bedding on the first weekend of the month, which will be Saturday 2nd April,' says James.

When it comes to finding ways to sleep better, your mattress, pillows, and duvet are your first port of call. Duvet tog ratings can be a little confusing, but the scale ranges from 1 to 15, with 1 being very cool and 15 being the warmest.
Getting a good night's sleep is crucial for our health and happiness, yet 62%* of us say we don't sleep as well as we'd like. There are of course various steps we can take to increase our chances of enjoying some quality shuteye, from investing in the very best duvet to having a calm bedtime routine that doesn't involve scrolling on your phone.

Likewise, there are things we should avoid doing, including bundling ourselves up in pajamas and duvets that are too thick, according to bedding expert Jo James.

Jo is the Founder and Creative Director of premium bedding company Bedfolk, which aims to help people wind down well with ridiculously comfy bedding using the best quality materials.

Common duvet mistake stopping you sleeping well

'A mistake I often see is people thinking they need a heavy duvet and cozy sleepwear to keep warm in the night,' Jo James from Bedfolk tells us. 'But if you are someone who feels the cold, sleeping with less sleepwear or cooler sleepwear will actually allow the body temperature to warm the air between the down clusters,' she says.

This will keep you warm with just the correct tog duvet, Jo explains. Moreover, a made bed reduces the appearance of clutter and makes your bedroom look and feel more organized.'

So it isn't just about making it look pretty for guests – it is an important part of your sleep health, too. Find out how to make a bed, styling it for not just those Insta moments, but for a healthy daily habit.

How to make a bed step by step

Making your bed goes further than just throwing the duvet over the entire thing and putting in that little extra effort really pays off. It doesn't take long to layer your bed properly and a bed well made will set off your bedroom decor instantly also.

1. Start with a good foundation

A cozy bed starts with a quality foundation so it is very much worth investing in the best mattress you can afford. On average, mattresses last anywhere from seven to ten years so if yours is older than that, you may want to consider looking into a new one. We spend a third of our lives sleeping so making sure you have a mattress that meets your needs should be a priority!

2. Mattress pads are a must

Mattress pads are a must as they perform double duties, they help protect your mattress from stains and they also add extra cushion to your mattress. Look for a high-quality mattress pad at places like Downlite Bedding. It’s like sleeping on a cloud and you’ll be so glad you made the investment!

3. Cover those box springs

If you have a platform bed, you don’t have to worry about a bed skirt. But if you have a box spring, hiding it is a must when going for visual appeal. There are different colors and styles of bed skirts to match any taste and Amazon is a great place to find the perfect bed skirt. Whether you want one with ruffles or straight lines, one that matches your bedding or just a simple white, bed skirts give your bed a finished look when used over your box springs.

4. Don't skimp on the sheets

Cheap, stiff sheets are a bit like laying on sandpaper so again, it's worth picking up the best bed sheets you can. Sheets should feel soft and lived in without looking shabby. Organic cotton is a great choice for soft and cozy sheets. If you’re looking for high-end sheets that will last but still have a cozy feel, Boll and Branch is a great choice and they have multiple options to choose from.

Keep yours looking great in and out of the closet by learning how to fold a fitted sheet properly.

5. Down comforter or quilt

Now that you’ve got your bases covered, it’s time for the pretty fluff! A down comforter with a duvet in the winter when it’s cold is so nice to crawl under at the end of the day! During the heat of summer, a light quilt works really nice since it’s not as heavy.

I suggest going neutral on the comforter or quilt and adding color with some fun throw pillows and blankets. This way you can easily change out pillows with the seasons or if you just want a different look without having to buy all new bedding. When I was searching for new bedding, I decided to go with a gray duvet with matching pillow cases from Amazon. All the pillows

Pillows are the icing on the cake of a beautiful bed. I like to start by stacking euro pillows in the back against the headboard. It helps create height and establishes a focal point. I suggest purchasing euro pillow inserts and covers, that way if you want a different look, you just have to purchase new covers which saves money! I found my navy blue euro covers and inserts on Amazon.

Next, layer pillows with the cases from your sheets and matching quilt or comforter set. If you’re in need of new sleeping pillows, Downlite Bedding is a great place to look for those, too! If your sheet pillow cases aren’t decorative you may opt to store them in a basket by your bed for easy access when you need them later.

Now you’re ready for some pretty throw pillows! But do they measure up? We put the range to the test to find out.

Eve bedding: reviewed and rated

We have included a mini-review of everything we have slept in/on/under below. Each is rated out of five stars too, with the average being the star rating we have arrived at for the brand as a whole. We start with the various bedding options first including pillows, duvets, and mattress toppers.

If you know you need a new mattress, jump straight to the Eve mattresses section to see the full range – or take a look at our round-up of the best eve mattress deals.

Eve Memory Foam Pillow

A good pillow for back sleepers: flatter, firmer, smarter and more supportive than the average pillow

Best for: Luxurious memory foam | Filling: Memory foam | Firmness: Medium firm | Cover: 100% polyester removable cover

Cooling memory foam

Hypoallergenic and antimicrobial

Expensive

Designed as an extension of your mattress, the Eve memory foam pillow offers all the benefits of memory foam while addressing its more commonly cited drawbacks, such as overheating.

The hypoallergenic foam and antimicrobial 'UltraFresh' finish allows you to benefit from its comforting and muscle-aligning properties.

Users mostly rate it as excellent and 'like sleeping on a cloud'; others say it's too firm, but in our experience, memory foam pillows do feel firmer than any other pillow type, and take a little getting used to (we'd rate it medium to firm).

Once you've adjusted, though – if you can, not all our sleepers could get used to the initial firm feeling – you may never want to go back to traditional fillings, whether natural or synthetic. The cover’s durable jersey fabric is knitted, which makes it feel like it has a lot of give, and it's super soft, too.

For memory foam fans, it might take some getting used to as it’s far flatter than your average memory foam pillow, which is why we've rated it as best for back sleepers.

The cover can be removed and washed at 40°C, and it’s hypoallergenic, making it a great choice for allergy sufferers.

Real Homes Rated: 4/5 stars

Eve Snuggle Pillow

A soft and squishy pillow that provides an easy-care alternative to feather and down

Material: 100% cotton casing & hollowfibre | Feel: Soft | Size: 50 x 75cm | Washing instructions: Machine washable at 40°C, tumble dry with low heat

Manufactured in Scotland, saving on shipping miles

30-night trial

As an alternative to feather

Machine washable

If you need more support from a firmer pillow

On first impressions you think ‘this pillow is too flimsy’ but then you rest your head on it and your opinion is instantly altered to ’this feels so comforting and squidgy, while surprisingly supportive’. It’s hard to describe but I’ll try, when your head is placed on the pillow you feel a level of support for sure but what you really notice is the plumpness of the pillow around your cheeks (if on your side) or ears (if sleeping on your back).

The snuggle pillow is ideal for front and back sleepers or those who simply like a pillow to hug and use as a comforter.

Thanks to its blend of hollow fibre filling, the Snuggle pillow feels like sleeping on feathers, ideal if you wish to avoid any animal products. The malleable hollow fibres allow a generous amount of bounce, yet the pillow retains its shape, unlike a real feather pillow which can require plumping. Hence why it's the ideal sleep accessory to cuddle up with. It's also easy to get your pillow into the optimum shape by simply pulling the hollow fibres apart to instantly make it more squidgy.

I once had the pleasure of meeting a bonafide pillow guru, seriously – this person was responsible for sourcing pillows for famous 5 star London hotels. So they knew their stuff! The expert in question revealed to me a simple trick, to test a pillow is to hold it out on your arm to ensure it doesn't ‘flop’ in half. The middle should retain some shape to balance the ends - otherwise there’s not enough support. So I did the test with the Eve pillow and it passed with flying colours.

This comfy pillow is machine washable, in temperatures up to 40 degrees. Ideal for those who like to give their pillows a semi-regular wash to maintain hygiene standards.

I personally still prefer a firmer pillow but this Snuggle pillow has changed my perspective on the softer side of design.

Real Homes Rated: 4.5/5 stars

Eve temperature balancing pillow protector

Keep your favourite pillow at its best for longer, and stay cool whilst you do it

Material: 100% cotton with Outlast® coating | Sizes: 50 x 75cm | Washing instructions: Machine washable at 40°C, tumble dry and iron with low heat

Protect your favourite pillow

Temperature control worked for us

Expensive

As far as pillow protectors go this option certainly isn't cheap, but then it is made from fabric developed by scientists for NASA. The design has a zip fastening, as opposed to an envelope folding end to ensure the pillow is perfectly fitted inside, and don't be afraid that a spacesuit-style fabric is any different to that of a regular fabric; it simply has a slightly cool feeling to the touch but you don't feel that once your pillowcase is over the top.

Also don't think it's too high tech to care for easily, it washes well and retains all the qualities that make it the premium pillow protector that it is.

Real Homes Rated: 4.5/5 stars

Eve Light Eco Duvet

A lightweight 4.5 tog duvet that incorporates recycled plastic bottles

Material: 100% cotton casing & 100% Dacron® Comforel® ECO recycled hollowfibre | Sizes: Single, double, king, super king | Washing instructions: Machine washable at 40°C, tumble dry with low heat

30 recycled plastic bottles used in its manufacture

Manufactured in the UK, saving on shipping miles

If you get too hot while sleeping but want a layer of comfort

No higher tog eco alternative

If you prefer a weightier duvet

If you’re looking for an eco-friendly synthetic duvet, then look no further. There is one size and weight of weighted balnket available, and instead of opting for glass beads and quilted polyester, it went for a cream ribbed-cotton number that I for one am very happy to have on my bed.

However, what you gain in good looks you do sacrifice slightly in terms of performance. The thick ribbed-knit looks great, but it does mean this blanket doesn't drape as well as many of its quilted glass-bead counterparts, which means you lose out on some of that all-over hugging sensation.

You still get a decent 7kg of weight with this blanket, which I definitely felt helped me sleep more soundly, but it wasn't quite as satisfying to drape around your shoulders as some of the very best weighted blankets we've tested, and when it wrinkles the thick fabric means areas of weight are removed from your body completely, so it didn't offer the all-over swaddling sensation that is a large part of a weighted blanket's appeal.

Is this blanket still worth it because it looks good and offers a good amount of sensory pressure to help you sleep more soundly? Depending on how you balance the scales of aesthetics and performance - and how large your budget is, because this option certainly isn't cheap - then, in our opinion it could well be.

Real Homes Rated: 4/5 stars

Eve mattresses

Emma Original Hybrid mattress

The best mattress for side sleepers – and surprisingly good for aches and pains

Size: Single, double, king, super king | Depth: 25cm | Type: Memory foam, pocket springs | Firmness: Medium-firm

200-night trial

Noticeable springiness

Suits all sleep positions

10-year warranty

'New foam' odour lingers

Limited sizes

It's not every day we say that a mattress suits every kind of sleeper, but the Emma Original Hybrid mattress lives up to this bold claim. It's pretty firm, which we found helped with aches and pains and supported key pressure points. Glamping anyone?

Once unfurled Eve says you should give it 30 minutes to plump up to full volume - far better than half an hour spent inflating a blow-up mattress with a foot pump - although when we tried it we found it was ready to use pretty much instantly.

Inside the sleeping surface is just a simple block of foam (we were kind of expecting some hidden springs) but we tested it overnight and found it was perfectly comfortable for a few nights' sleep, although it is worth noting that without any spring support heavier sleepers will compress the foam more, so may end up sleeping closer to the ground.

The removable grey cover with Eve's distinctive yellow highlights has a nice textural feel and makes things look and feel a lot less basic, plus it can be removed and washed at up at 40 degrees. It was also simple to roll the bedding up, and zip up the fastener so it stays rolled - although potentially you might save more space by keeping it flat and sliding it under a bed when not in use.

Overall it's a useful option to have to hand for sleepovers and impromptu overnight stays.

Real Homes Rated: 4.5/5 stars

About this review and our reviewer

About my sleep

To relate to my review it's important to know a little about me and my sleep patterns to work out how my experience might compare to your own. For starters, I am a late 30-something female (not willing to admit I'm nearly 40) of average weight and height. Why is this important to know? Size has an impact on how a mattress might feel to each individual – determining the levels of firmness and support needed by different body types.
I've always had the ability to sleep soundly for a solid 8 hours, without anything disturbing me – until this last year when I've found overheating at night frequently waking me, but only to levels of stick-your-leg-out-the-bed-hot.
Wondering how to wash a duvet? We've got you with this in-depth guide.

Putting the sheet, duvet cover and pillowcases in the washing machine is the easy part of getting bed linens clean. But there’s the duvet inside the cover to think about as well, and you might be wondering just how to wash a duvet. After all, this element of your bedding is bulky and comes with a variety of fillings that seem challenging to clean.

Getting to grips with the job is a must, though. When we sleep we lose half a pint of fluid each night and, in the course of a year, we shed a pound of dead skin cells, according to the Sleep Charity – and there’s only the cover to protect the duvet beneath from this onslaught.

That‘s not all, of course. There’s plenty more on the list of things that mean you definitely will want to clean a duvet in addition to its cover. Think tea or coffee spills, bodily fluids, and the fact that many of us let pets on to the bed, adding their own contribution to the (unhygienic) party. Now you know that lovely info, maybe you'd rather just consult our best duvet guide so you don't have nightmares.

Martha Stewart agrees, 'Your duvet, that fluffy bed covering that keeps you warm on chilly nights, can have a long and happy life if you take care of it properly. That's why laundering a duvet and its soft, comfy insert is a job that needs to be handled correctly. After all, your duvet is far more than just something to snuggle under for warmth—it's also a decorative accessory that contributes to your bed's status as the room's focal point.'

The bottom line? It’s vital to know how to wash your duvet, so you can keep all of your bedding hygienic and fresh. And for the inside track, all you need to do is scroll down.

Once you're done with the duvet, it's time to learn how to do laundry.

How to wash a duvet or down comforter in a washing machine

Your first instinct when thinking about how to wash a duvet is to pop it in the washing machine. It’s a good one, too, but there are a few things to bear in mind before you stuff the duvet into the drum and push the button.

First of all, check the duvet’s care label. Does it say it can be washed? If not, you’ll need to follow the instructions – likely to recommend taking it to a professional dry cleaner – to avoid unfortunate results. Duvets with synthetic fillings are often washable in a home washing machine, while those containing feather or down more frequently require dry cleaning.

Is it possible to wash your down comforter in the washer? Well, you absolutely can but we recommend using a front loading washing machine, like the ones you'd find at a laundromat.

If the label does say that your duvet is machine washable, the next question is whether the washing machine’s drum is large enough to fit it. It’s important that the duvet can move around freely during the washing cycle. A washing machine with a 7kg drum capacity should be able to accommodate a double duvet but be aware that the tog rating also counts. If yours is a warm, high tog duvet, it may not be able to go into your home machine. The best course of action? Check your washing machine’s instructions.

All go for cleaning the duvet in the washing machine? Here's how to wash your duvet in the washer.

Follow the instructions on the care label including when it comes to the temperature of the washing cycle.

Use as high a temperature as the label recommends: at 60ºC dust mites are killed and this is particularly crucial for asthma and allergy sufferers.

For a synthetic filling, use your usual detergent or as stipulated by the care label. Got a feather or down duvet/comforter? Go for a non-bio detergent.

When the washing cycle has finished, make sure you shake the duvet out so the filling is distributed evenly.

After that you’ll need to leave the duvet to dry thoroughly and completely before you put it back into a cover and on to the bed.

You might be able to put it into the tumble dryer as an alternative, but always follow the instructions on the care label.

Looking for a new washing machine? Some dry cleaners also offer a duvet-washing service along with dry cleaning for those duvets that can’t go into the machine.

What about other alternatives? Wondering how to wash a duvet in the bath? It’s not our recommended method, but it is possible. There’s a big BUT here, though. If your duvet’s care label says dry clean only, don’t try this method.

Without further ado, here's how to wash your duvet or down comforter without using a washer.

You’ll need to fill the tub to around half way with warm water, then add detergent and agitate the water to mix it in.

Remember to check the care label for the type of detergent that’s recommended for your duvet.

Put the duvet into the water, then work the soapy water into it, making sure you’ve tackled every area.

Some people recommend using (clean) feet to do this to avoid awkward bending over the bath.

When you’re done, release the soapy water from the bath, and then rinse the duvet in clean water.

You’ll need to repeat this until there’s no detergent remaining.

After that, gently squeeze the water out, shake to distribute the filling evenly, and hang the duvet until it’s completely dry.

Find out how to wash pillows while you're washing your duvet.

How often should you wash a duvet or down comforter?

Your duvet doesn’t need washing as regularly as your bed linen because it is protected by the cover. However, you should do it at least on an annual basis, and every six months is probably better especially for a duvet owner who has asthma or allergies.

Martha Stewart suggests, 'Besides a cover, a duvet comes with the all-important insert, which can be filled with feathers, wool, fibers that are sustainably grown, or synthetic fibers. Though some inserts can be machine-washed, it'll last longer if you get it professionally laundered once or twice a year.'

Why not splash out on some new sheets, with our guide to the best duvet covers and bedsheets.

How to wash a duvet naturally

We’d always recommend using a laundry detergent for cleaning your duvet and not creating your own recipe at home.
Getting enough sleep, and getting enough quality sleep, is mighty important for our health and well being. It’s one of the most essential things we crave day-to-day and having a good sleep space to drift away on can make or break the cycle.

According to the Sleep Council, 40 percent of the UK population suffer with sleep issues which could be down to a multitude of reasons. For example, your lifestyle may be keeping you awake at night, your duvet is making you hot or your bed isn’t quite up to scratch so it doesn’t give your body the support it needs. And, with the warmer weather now upon us, you may have noticed these issues have become more prevalent than ever.

To help address these concerns, we’ve teamed up with U2 Sleep who have spent the past three years developing their own bedding innovations to ensure we get an undisturbed night’s rest. We get the lowdown on how to improve the quality of sleep and how to sleep more comfortably.

Early bird offer: Get 50% off the U2 Sleep Pillow and Pillow Capsule
As part of their launch, U2 Sleep are offering customers the chance to bag 50 per cent off the Stop Tossing and Turning Pillow and Pillow Capsule. Make sure your head is correctly supported

Sleeping on a pillow which is too flat, too tall, too soft or too hard is pretty common amongst households, and is something which certainly isn’t a one-size-fits-all. On average, we keep using our pillows for a little over three years, which is a long time if it’s not quite right for you. Imagine how much stress and discomfort that puts your neck under, too, not to mention the increased likelihood of mites and other gremlins living in there.

This issue is tackled head on with companies, such as the likes of U2 Sleep, who have developed the Stop Tossing & Turning Pillow – a unique memory foam pillow – which aligns the spine and adjusts to the sleepers preferred height thanks to a removable layer.

2. Check that your mattress is keeping you aligned

If you’re waking up with stiffness, aches or pains, or notice you sleep better in other beds, then you know it’s time to be out with the old and in with the new. A mattress is a big investment but they are the foundations of a good night’s sleep so are worth every penny, if you choose the right one. A comfortable bed will save you from fatigue and irritability for the rest of the day, and will be one you look forward to slumping back into.

A memory foam mattress, such as the U2 Tossing & Turning Mattress, will help to reduce pressure on the body and support your head, neck and backbone in the correct alignment.

3. Top your old mattress

If you don’t quite have the budget for a new mattress, then a mattress topper will help to make your bed much more comfortable and will help to extend its life, too. A mattress topper works by adding an extra layer of cushioning, which will be a welcomed change if you are suffering from any aches or pains. They’ll also protect the mattress from any stains and, dare we say it, bed bugs and other nasties.

4. Adjust your duvet with the seasons

You may be comfortable with your pillow and mattress, but having the right duvet for the seasons is just as important to get right. The change in seasons is responsible for the varying temperatures inside the home which will affect the quality of your sleep if not regulated. In general, you’ll need to look out for the difference in tog.

For a summer duvet, you’ll need an option between 1–4 tog; for a winter duvet, you’ll want to look out for 10.5–15 tog. Or, you can opt for an all-seasons duvet, to keep it nice and simple.

5. Sleep comfortably when you're on the move

If you find yourself falling asleep on long distance journeys in the car, on the train or on a plane then your body will thank you for the gift of a cradling pillow which supports your heavy head. Travelling can put a tremendous amount of strain on the body because not only is there a lot of take in in quick succession, but you could also be sat down hunched up for long spells.

Taking a good pillow with you is an option, especially if it’s a pillow which can be reduced in size – just like the U2 Pillow which can be taken out with the U2 Pillow Capsule to reduce its size by up to 80 per cent – so you can always find some level of comfort, wherever in the world you are.

6. And keep your lifestyle in check

Modern life is typically fast-paced and is one where we are constantly bombarded by information to process; from what we consume on the television to religiously checking emails, and then juggling everything that’s going on at home and in the office. It’s a lot to take in every day, so our minds go into overdrive.

However, there are a few simple ways to adjust your lifestyle to encourage a better night’s sleep. This includes; setting out and maintaining a regular bedtime routine, switching off any tech a few hours before bed time and avoid drinking alcohol or caffeine before it’s time for bed.

Early bird offer: Get 50% off the U2 Sleep Pillow and Pillow Capsule
As part of their launch, U2 Sleep are offering customers the chance to bag 50 per cent off the Stop Tossing and Turning Pillow and Pillow Capsule. It’s worth investing in a quality duvet

A fluffy, cloud-like duvet is key to a cosy night in – whether you’re cuddling up in bed with your other half, or having guests over for a sleepover style movie marathon on the sofa. And it’s usually as the nights get colder that we discover that the duvet we’ve had for (probably a few too many) years is either no longer doing its job or has seen better days.

While it can be tempting to opt for something cheap and cheerful, the likelihood is that it will only last a few years, which is why we’d recommend investing in something a little more substantial and sustainable (but more on that later). While you’ll likely have to invest a little more money to begin with, it will prove to be more cost effective in the long term; enhancing your sleep quality in the process.

In the case of Panda, this means a 5-year guarantee to ensure your items are free from defects. Plus, when the time comes for you to part with your bamboo duvet, Panda will dispose of your duvet responsibly on your behalf, thanks to their Panda Recycle Program.

2. Perfect for allergy sufferers

You, or your kids suffer from allergies? We know the pain and we’re here to offer the best solution we’ve come across, yet: bamboo.

Naturally hypoallergenic and antibacterial, bamboo helps protect users against skin irritation and allergies, making it suitable for those affected by eczema, sensitive skin, or hay fever triggered by dust mites.

How? Well, bamboo is naturally less hospitable to organisms, making it naturally antibacterial. Plus, it doesn’t require the same harsh treatments as cotton to successfully remove harmful bacteria, which will be a mighty relief to you - or a loved one - that may have sensitive skin.

3. Easy to clean for those with busy lifestyles

Thanks to the antibacterial and hypoallergenic properties that we just touched on, you’ll find that a bamboo duvet needs washing less regularly than your standard duvet.

When you do come around to washing it, you’ll be pleased to know that laundry is super easy with bamboo. Simply pop in a 30 degree wash and then hang out to dry. You’ll notice that it takes around half the time of an average duvet, which means it’ll be back on your bed in no time.

4. Choose bamboo to regulate your temperature throughout the year

The rating of 10.5 Tog (500gsm) makes The Cloud suitable for all seasons. Throughout extreme temperatures the bamboo microfibre will keep you warmer in the Winter and cooler in the Summer.

5. Buying bamboo will reduce your impact on the planet

If you’re thinking of buying something new, we’d encourage you to think about the impact your purchase will have on the planet. Often duvets are made from unsustainable cottons, unnatural fibres or feather down, which not only impact the planet, but have a detrimental impact on the people (or animals, if we’re talking feather down) who produce them, too. We’d recommend giving the documentary 'The True Cost' a watch if you’re interested in learning more about the impacts of non-organic cotton.

Panda’s Cloud Duvet bucks that trend, offering a sustainable alternative made from bamboo and nano-microfibre that feels just as cosy as your classic feather down duvet. As the name suggests, it offers a cloud-like sleep (or snuggling) experience without impacting the environment.

It’s nearing that time of year where your house basically becomes a hotel. Your friends come over for dinner, the eggnog you’ve had since last year is opened and before you know it, they are unable to drive, or it just gets too late and you end up hearing the words, “Of course you can stay” leave your mouth before you can stop them. So in preparation for this inevitable Christmas onslaught, it’s time to start making sure your guest bedroom is ready for the crowds. And thanks to Oak Furnitureland’s amazing Black Friday deals, you don’t have to empty your bank account to ensure all your guests are happy.

1. Get the bed right

Okay, let’s talk about the most important part of a guest bedroom, the bed. Obviously. Oak Furnitureland has a huge range of beds in all different sizes and styles, plus so many of them are in its Black Friday sale. Just check out this lovely natural oak double bed (loads of space underneath for extra storage) or for a more rustic style, the French Farmhouse bed is perfect.

A handy tip when it comes to actually making the guest bed is to layer up your bedding. Everyone has different preferences when it comes to sleeping temperatures: some people like to cocoon, whereas others only need a sheet. Save your guests the embarrassment of having to ask for more bedding by layering up a couple of blankets. And think about the thickness of your duvet too, we reckon go for a medium-warmth one (between 7-10.5 tog), so guests can layer up or down.

2. No room for a bed? No problem

Just because you don’t have the space for a dedicated guest bedroom, that doesn’t mean you can’t transform a living room or even an office into a comfy, practical space. Upgrade your guests from the blow up mattress and invest in a sofa bed. Oak Furnitureland has some fab deals on sofa beds at the moment – we especially love this two seater sofa bed, it’s deluxe mattress won’t just ensure guests have a great night's sleep, it will also fit seamlessly in your living room.

3. Make sure you have plenty of storage

There is nothing worse than arriving at your friends’ house for the weekend, and opening the wardrobe to finding it overflowing with spare blankets, old coats and the vacuum. You are then forced to keep all of your clothes rolled in your suitcase for days! Make sure when you are hosting to clear out part of your wardrobe for your guests’ luggage. If you simply don’t have the room in your current spare wardrobe to do that, think about getting one a bit roomier. This natural solid oak double wardrobe is on offer at the moment at an amazing price, as is this more traditional-style Canterbury wardrobe. Both would offer ample room for your guests belongings, plus you could use the drawer for storing spare bedding, the vacuum however may have to find a new home...

If you don’t have room for a full on wardrobe, opt instead for a cabinet or a sideboard that has plenty of drawers. This solid oak cabinet is small enough so that it won’t take over a small guest bedroom but big enough so your guests don’t have to live out of a suitcase and can actually unpack their things.

Top tip: If you do choose to go for a smaller storage option just make sure you have some hangers on the back of the door – those snazzy sequin Christmas outfits weren’t made for being folded into drawers!

4.
Summer's nearly over – time to start thinking about warm coats, shorter days, and... that inevitable seasonal cold.

But apparently, you don't have to resign yourself to being ill when the weather gets colder, and the trick isn't necessarily to get a flu jab. Your home is likely to be full of germs after the summer, and they're all waiting for your immune system to weaken in winter – so, prepping your home for winter now should avoid infections later in the year.

These tricks should your house clean and you free of illness.

Giving your house a deep clean can kill fleas

It may be tedious and time-consuming, but a deep clean really pays off come winter. This especially applies to homes with carpets, notorious breeding grounds for bacteria and parasites. Got pets? Still more reason to get that carpet deep cleaned, for their sake as well as yours, since any fleas that may lie dormant in your carpet will awaken come central heating season. If you really don't want to do it yourself, book a professional carpet cleaner.

The fridge also needs your attention – throw away all out-of-date food (that jar of mayo that's nine months old, anyone?), clean and disinfect all shelves and drawers.

Cleaning the radiators should improve your allergies

Central heating can make you ill, and that's a fact. The dry air itself is not great for our respiratory systems and complexions, but the accumulation of of dust in your radiators can aggravate asthma and allergies. So wipe them thoroughly with a damp cloth before turning on.

Cleaning all bedding will kill dust mites

The 'all' is key here; it's not just your sheets that need regular cleaning – all bedding, including pillows, duvet, and mattress topper, need a regular clean, especially if you prefer natural materials such as feather and down. If you need convincing, wash just one of your pillows first, then compare it with the one you haven't washed. Feel the difference in weight? That's the dust mites and dead skin cells.

Helen Johnson from the Fine Bedding Company says, 'Many of us are guilty of putting off those cleaning jobs that require a bit more time and effort. From cleaning out the fridge to cleaning filled duvets and pillows, autumn is the perfect time to look beyond the surface – and an autumn clean is now considered more important for and more effective than a spring clean on the nation’s health.'

Decluttering is good for your mental health (and charities)

Everyone instinctively knows that a serene and tidy room is better for our mental and physical health than a messy one, so go on and chuck the stuff you no longer want. Or, better still, give it to a charity.

Now that the heatwave is finally over, getting that elusive good night's sleep seems possible once again. But ambient temperature is not all there is to sleeping well. The Fine Bedding Company has collated important research on how to achieve a good night's sleep to make restless nights a thing of the past. Perfect bedtime reading, if you ask us.

Should you change your duvet?

If you are too hot or too cold during the night – a common complaint – your bedding could be the culprit. That down duvet may be lovely and fluffy, but it could be keeping your body too hot, so opt for natural, moisture-regulating materials such as wool, or high-tech synthetics.

Neuroscientist Dr Penny Lewis who runs the sleep lab at Manchester University advises that 'a good duvet can help us to maintain a comfortable body temperature while we sleep even if the room is a bit too warm or too cold. If it is highly breathable, for example with natural or technically innovative synthetic fillings, it can also prevent moisture from accumulating.' The tog count, or weight, of your duvet is also important: investing in different duvets for different seasons is a worthwhile investment, particularly if you tend to overheat during the night.

Choose the best pillows for your sleeping position

If you wake with a stiff neck or shoulders, your pillow could be the culprit. As a rule of thumb, if you are a back or stomach sleeper, go for a softer pillow; if you tend to sleep on your side, you're likely to need a bit more support. The material of your pillow may be less important than the quality of its construction, so it's not all about buying the most expensive one you can afford. Always test your pillow before purchasing if possible.

Take hygiene seriously

Washing your bedsheets regularly may seem obvious, but how often do you wash your duvet and pillows? Bedding that isn't cleaned regularly can be responsible for allergies and can worsen conditions such as asthma and eczema. So pop your bedding in the wash every two to three months.

The Fine Bedding Company's spokesperson, Helen Johnson, concludes, 'We like to compare the importance of good quality filled beddings to the importance of good underwear. Even the most sophisticated dress won’t look great if your underwear isn’t doing its job right – and it’s the same with bedding. If the bits beneath the sheets aren’t performing then, no matter how pretty it looks, the cover or mattress won’t make a difference.'
