Living on campus during any holiday can be fun, but also emotionally challenging. Here is how to make your time on campus comfortable, whether it's during winter holidays or over the summer.

1. Decorate your space

One of the easiest ways to boost your mental state is by making sure the environment around you is uplifting. If your dorm room is looking a bit bland, add some seasonal touches to it to make things feel more homey.

Here’s what you need to do in your dorm before you leave for the holiday break

Don't make the mistake of rushing off for the holiday break without taking the time to check all of the important stuff off of your to-do list. 

1. Unplug your lamps (and all your other electronics too)

Before you leave your dorm for an extended period, it’s always a good idea to unplug all of your lamps. And, it’s not just your lamps that need to be unplugged, it’s also a good idea to go around unplugging all of your other electronics, from power cords to mini-fridges. Pro Tip: Also remember to pack all of your essential chargers — I'm talking your phone, laptop, and iPad! Trust me, you don't want to be stuck at your parent's house without them.

2. Empty out your mini fridge 

Talking of mini-fridges, it’s also a good idea to empty out your mini-fridge, removing any food or drinks from inside. Before giving the mini-fridge a clean, wiping out the interior as well as cleaning the exterior of the unit. This will prevent any nasty smells from taking over, gross! Plus, you can make a list of items to bring back from home if you want to stock up.

3. Take the trash out 

Make sure to empty all of the trash cans in your dorm room before you leave for the holiday break. Otherwise, you’ll probably return to a rather smelly room and potentially a dorm that’s been invaded by pests. 4. Water the plants

1. Giving your roommate too much space

Look, we get it. You want to get along with your roommate (or roommates). But that doesn’t mean having to give up your share of the space in order to make them more likely to like you. While you want your new roomie to like you and think you’re nice, there’s no need to go overboard and let them have the whole closet or part of your storage section. Instead, split the space in your dorm room equally. 

2. Not getting an easy-to-maneuver laundry hamper 

It sounds trivial but honestly, it can make life super difficult for you. When you’re living in dorms you don’t have the luxury of having a washing machine just a few steps away. The chances are that the laundromat is going to be at least a floor or two away (most are in the basement). Our editor-in-chief Melissa shared how she felt she hadn’t personalized her dorm enough and how the space was super bland and didn’t have that “homey” vibe to it. So, she’d recommend that instead of fully lofting your bed, you half loft it.

How to pack up your dorm

1. Start by decluttering  

First things first, focus on the clutter. Even if you figured out how to organize your dorm properly, chances are that over the year you’ve accumulated some extra junk. Now is the perfect time to clear it all out. After all, there’s no point needlessly carting clutter from one dorm to your new living space, is there? Set aside a few hours to go through your entire dorm, getting rid of anything that you don’t need. If you haven't used it for more than six months, ask yourself if you really need the item. 

2. Clean everything that you’re taking with you 

Once you’ve finished the decluttering process, the next step is to clean every item that you’re planning on taking with you. This is also a great time to give your dorm a deep clean. From your clothes and your bedding to your storage cases and ornaments, everything will need to be wiped down. It might seem like an unnecessary task, but when you move into your new place you’ll be grateful. Pulling out dirty, dusty items is never fun.

3. Organize your items into groups 

Ahead of packing everything up, start by organizing your dorm items into groups. This will help to make the boxing up process a li’l easier as you will have already separated your items out. Personally, I always liked to categorize my items into clothes, bed, study, beauty, and miscellaneous piles, ready to get boxed up. However, you can separate your items in whatever way works best for you. 

4. Box your items up  

Once you’ve figured out where to get cardboard boxes and after you've sorted your items into categories, you can then begin to pack them up, using the groups to keep all your items neat and orderly. Make sure that when you’re boxing things up you’re sticking to the groups you’ve created and you’re making a list of what item is packed up where (this will make the unpacking process so much easier).

2) Private and shared toilets 

Whether you’re lucky enough to have your own bathroom or you have to share it with your floor, the toilets are the most common places for bacteria and germs to thrive. Although cleaning and unblocking your toilet might not be the first thing you want to accomplish, since it’s often the chore people procrastinate on the most, it’s a good idea to tackle the bathroom head-on. 3) Sinks and shower

Because of moisture, sinks and showers can be a place where bacteria thrive, especially if they aren’t cleaned often. By setting a daily or weekly ritual of at least spraying and wiping down your sink or shower, you can be in a better position not to have to do deep cleanings as often. For shared kitchen sinks, food contamination can be a big risk, meaning keeping those areas free of germs is even more important to your (and your roommates) health. 

4) Entrance and shoe rack 

Because entrances see the most foot action (and shoes), this can be a place where dirt and grime build-up. As the entryway to your dorm, you want to keep this area organized and free of clutter. Consider adding a shoe storage idea (like a rack or cabinet), especially in “shoe-free” dorm rooms, as well as a welcome mat to trap dirt before it tracks on the floors. While you’re cleaning this area, it can also be a great time to make a resolution to also keep your shoes clean. 

5) Kitchen area 

The kitchen is one of the most important areas to keep clean for your health. Because of food contamination bacteria and potential cross-contamination for people who experience food allergies, the kitchen must be cleaned often and properly. A clean kitchen may also lead you to cook more often for yourself, which can be a great habit for your health and your wallet.

If it were up to me, I’d call Mom and Dad every day. Make sure to stay in touch with your loved ones back home, whether it's via phone calls, texts, social media, or Facetime. This will help you feel connected to them and remind you that you're not alone.

2) Get involved in activities on campus

One of the best ways to combat homesickness is to get involved in activities on campus. Doing so will help you meet new people and make new friends, which can help you feel more at home in your new environment. With this in mind, try out for sports you love or join Spanish, Italian, or Salsa clubs. To add on, attending campus events isn’t a bad idea. The possibilities are endless!

3) Make friends

Now that you’ve attended events on campus, have made the sports team of your choice, or joined fun clubs, it’s time to make friends! Even if it isn’t at any of these activities or campus events, places one could make friends at when in college are the cafeteria during lunch, the library during a study session (sidenote: don’t be too loud), the bookstore, or campus cafe because you can’t go wrong with meeting someone new when grabbing a cup of coffee or tea.

4) Self care is priority

Taking care of yourself is key. Make sure to get enough sleep, eat healthy foods, and exercise regularly. This will help you feel better both physically and emotionally. Whether it's impromptu 4 AM guitar solos or dorm parties that end when your early-morning psych class begins, campus housing can be... hectic. Even if you have comfy and efficient dorm supplies, there's a chance that adjusting to life away from home might cause a few restless nights. 

But there's no need to fret — we spoke to sleep experts and they provided top-notch tips to help you catch some Zs. Make sure to set your alarm, though—you're not going to want to sleep through breakfast.

From accessorizing properly to adjusting study routines, here's what our sleep experts suggest when moving into a dorm. Is that a yawn we just heard, dearies? Sleep tight! 

1. Establish a routine

Look, we get it: there are going to be all-nighters. There are going to be homecomings. There are going to be Very Long Term Papers that you cannot start the night before but somehow did. Whoops! 

There are always going to be factors affecting when your head actually hits the pillow. Try as hard as you can to establish some sort of routine before tucking in that doesn't involve prepping a Microsoft Word doc or doom-scrolling TikTok for makeup hacks. 

"Bedtime habits signal to the brain that is time to wind down and these activities can boost melatonin, the sleep hormone contributing to a better night’s sleep," says Chris Tattersall, Woolroom's sleep expert, who suggests activities like meditation or reading. 

2. Shower at night

You might feel invigorated after an early-morning shower, but sometimes scrubbing in the evening helps relax your muscles, and in turn, allows you to drift off to Neverland, according to BackHug's Chongsu Lee. 

Likewise, Mattress Online’s expert, James Wilson, The Sleep Geek, says, "A warm shower will initially raise your core temperature. When you step out of the shower, your temperature will then drop, helping you feel cooler. This is important, as it’s a cue for your body to prepare for sleep."

3. Pay attention to the time

You might get lost in the stacks at the library with your roomie until the wee hours, but make a solid effort to close your eyes when it's most important. 

"It is best to sleep between the hours of 11pm to 2am," Lee says. "This is when the body produces the most healing hormones: melatonin, serotonin, and endorphins. If you miss these hours, your sleep won’t be the best quality."

4. Invest in the right bedding

Sometimes it takes a little extra love to help make a dorm bed feel like the one you have at home, and a mattress topper is a good place to start. 

"Consider buying a mattress topper to add an extra layer of comfort and stop you waking up with a stiff neck or a bad back," Wilson recommends.

We are always trying to nail the boho vibe, but don't disregard hues when decorating your space—it might be beneficial in the long run. 

"Keep colors and smells in mind," says Dr. Angela Holliday-Bell. "Using soothing colors in your dorm room such as blues can help provide a calming and relaxing effect. Certain scents such as lavender and Jasmine have also been shown to promote relaxation, decrease anxiety, and promote sleep."

Sometimes, you can't just rely on a comfy pillow to help you count sheep — you need to bring in the pro tools.

"I recommend using either a sound machine to mask sounds from outside the room, or sleep headphones that can drown out noises from inside the room," says Dr. Holliday-Bell. "You can also use earplugs to keep your environment nice and quiet."

While a power nap between bio and physics might sound appealing, and your bed can be a comfortable place to start that term paper, resist the urge to get cozy during the day. 

"Throughout the day, make sure to differentiate your sleep environment from any other setting," Tattersall recommends. "Although it may be tempting to relax by using your bedroom to watch television, exercise or even work, your brain won't be able to separate the spaces, resulting in a restless night." 

8. Opt for wool

Science says wool has its benefits, including better sleep. Perhaps it's time to invest in a throw for your bed.

"Due to its temperature regulating properties, wool keeps you cool when it’s hot and warm when it’s cold, unlike synthetic fibers," Tattersall says. "Heat regulation is crucial to great sleep and being too hot is often the number one disruptor of a great night’s sleep."

9. Talk to your roomie

While compiling a list of questions to ask your college roomie, one should be devoted to sleep environments. Hash out specifics as soon as possible to avoid any issues from arising throughout the semester.

"Compassionate conversations can be really important," Wilson notes. "If you share a room with another student, then have a quick talk about how you sleep, listen to how they sleep, and agree on some parameters that work for you both. This means everyone can get the sleep they need."

10. Recreate your home

If you're feeling a little homesick and missing your room at home, trick your brain into thinking you're still under their roof, even if you're thousands of miles away. 

"Take pictures of the people and things you love to put around your bed, use the same laundry detergent for your bedding that is used at home, and if you’re in a relationship, maybe take your partner's perfume or cologne so you feel more emotionally connected to them," Wilson adds.

While I really love shopping for dorm supplies, there are a couple of things I wish I had known before heading off to college for the first time. Freshmen, don't get duped like I did! A little advice can go a long way and you definitely wanna feel prepared.

Here are the biggest secrets I wish I knew before heading to college. 

1) There's minimal storage space

Dorm rooms are often very small and cramped, with little storage space, as they consist of approximately 228 square feet of actual living space. With this in mind, you really won’t be able to meet all of your decor goals since you’ll also be sharing this space with a roommate.

2) You may have some roommate conflict

Now, I don’t mean to be a negative Nancy, but you may have to share your room with someone you don't know, which can be challenging if you have different sleep schedules, study habits, or cleanliness standards. 3) Noise violations can suck

There may be strict rules about noise and visitors, which can be frustrating if you want to have friends over or stay up late studying. 4) Shared bathrooms are not the vibe

Shared bathrooms can be inconvenient and unsanitary, especially when there are a lot of people using them. It can be difficult to find an open stall or shower, and there is always the risk of someone else using the bathroom while you are in there. College is totally an exciting time — but that doesn’t mean you can’t feel a li’l homesick. I know that you can scroll through your phone or Facetime, but I think there’s something so special about having printed-out pics to look at. You can hang them up on your wall, put them on your nightstand, or add them to your desk decor to add a touch of home to your room.

2. Create a hot drinks zone

When I lived in a tiny room in a house share, having my own tea and coffee table was a total game-changer. When creating an inviting atmosphere, the first thing I always do is turn the big light off. I found in my dorm that the light was unnecessarily bright, so I opted for just my string lights in the evenings. In fact, I still do this today, even though I’ve graduated to a rental! Neon lights have also come back recently, and give such Y2K realness. As well as working as lighting, they also look amazing as wall decor. 

7. Zone out your space

I found in my dorm room that the whole space blended into one, which made it feel even tinier. That’s why I wish I’d thought about zoning my room out, like Skylar Larson has. Guys dorm ideas were few and far between when I went to college. While my college room looked the bomb, their "decor" stretched as far as alcohol bottles, protein shake tubs, and event stubs... sheesh.

I don't blame 'em though. A lot of college decor is geared towards girls, and having done my research, there's not much for the male-identifying population when it comes to interior inspo. There are disproportionately more girls' dorm room ideas out there, but given that I hung out with the guys and like motorsport and soccer — I've taken a "shot" at putting together some cool ideas for you.

When I was in high school, boys steered clear of home economics class, but that didn't mean that they weren't partial to a wall hanging. Tapestries are a super simple way to add interest and there are loads of different shapes and styles to choose from. As well as the retailers below, I'd like to give a special mention to Urban Outfitters' wall tapestries, as it always delivers.

2. Go for a moody mid-century modern aesthetic

Midcentury modern schemes are generally quite gender-neutral, making it an easy trend to follow and find decor for. Steer toward browns, mustards, and green tones to create a warm aesthetic. As well as the aforementioned tapestries, a bold print is a great dorm wall decorating idea. Go full color, or if you want a bit of drama, a black and white or sepia print might suit your space.

3. Go all out with the A/V

As much as I loved my college years, it can be totally stressful at times. 1) STORE YOUR SHOES ON THE WALL 

Whether you’re a sneakerhead or simply need a place for everything from flip-flops to high heels—shoes can take up a lot of room. While you can try to stash them on the closet floor—there may not be enough space for all of them. So, a hanging shoe organizer can be a smart buy. 2) TRACK FOOD IN YOUR MINI FRIDGE

I took the time to speak with feng shui consultant Candice Berlanga (CFSP) on ways to incorporate effective feng shui in your dorm room.

Tips for creating good dorm room feng shui

Incorporate the right colors

Color is proven to have a psychological impact on our feelings, and in some practices of feng shui, color is thought to have energy. Adding different hues to your dorm room can help you feel more at home. Greens, soft blues, lavender, soft pinks, earthy yellows, and terracotta reds can help bring life into a dreary or cold feeling space. Avoid overusing bright and loud colors for a space that you sleep in. Small amounts for accents are fine.  

Nail down your lighting 

Adding some soft lighting or lamps to your dorm room can help counteract the harshness of overhead lighting. With the popularity of colored light strips and bulbs, you now have a choice of colors. Blue lights like the ones found on electric devices or LEDs are energetic and wake you up, so they’re best used in the morning. 

Green is the color of nature. Green light is said to boost your immune system. Orange stimulates the creative thought process and helps people come up with new ideas. Purple lights can help reduce emotional and mental stress. Yellow can sometimes be beneficial to treat depression. Red lights help with producing melatonin. Try some different lighting options and note how they make you feel!  

Hang feel-good imagery 

Add a dorm photo wall or a collage of your family and friends to remind you of your support system. Although you want pictures up, avoid an overabundance of pictures so you don’t feel as though you’re being watched. College is about being independent and being away from home to discover yourself. You don’t need to feel symbolically “watched” by mom's pictures being everywhere. 

Keep overhead objects away from the top of your bed

Although you may be limited in space, try to avoid placing shelving over your headboard. When it comes to feng shui, this oppresses the energy over your head while you sleep and can lead to restless sleep. You may also experience headaches in the long run. 

Get creative with curtains 

Curtains can be used in a variety of ways to add privacy or soften a space. Put them between beds to divide a space or hang them overhead to soften corners pointing at the bed. These corners in feng shui are known as “poison arrows” and can have a similar impact as overhead shelving. Don’t forget to add curtains to your dorm windows even if you have built-in blinds or shutters. 

Get an organization and shelving system going

Some dorms come with built-in shelving while some don’t. With that said, adding shelving, decorative storage cubes, bins, and baskets can serve a dual purpose by adding a decorative touch to a space while keeping your things organized and off the floor. A fun fact about bins is that you can just toss in stuff you don’t want to be seen and organize the contents as needed. 

Bring in some plants  

The best way to make a small space such as a dorm feel homey is to add a natural touch with plants. Plants that are low maintenance such as an ivy or a snake plant are best for a busy college student. Although live plants are preferable, fake plants are fine, too, and can create a similar effect.

Get some natural prints on fabric  

Adding different textures and designs that mimic natural materials is also a nice touch. You may be limited on wall space, so you can opt for pillows and bedding that are not only soft and cozy but options that have leaves, flowers, or natural patterns on them. It's a great way to bring some nature inside.  

Be conscious of the bedding you choose

Speaking of bedding, opt for some good quality pillows, bedding sets, and mattress toppers if needed, as dorm mattresses can be old, worn, and uncomfortable. You’ll be in this space for a while. Therefore, make it as comfy as you can.

POV: You’re moving into your first dorm and you’re wondering what it takes and what dorm essentials you need to make the most of this kinda living situation. Admittedly, it’s a whole new (and much more compact) way of life, so a li'l adjustment period is completely normal.

I remember moving into my first dorm and being shocked at how small the space felt. It also hit me that I was going to have to make some serious changes to how I lived. Instead of having an entire house to use, I now had just a single room (shared with a roommate, obvi).

It didn't feel doable, but in a major plot twist (and despite my hesitations), I worked it out and actually loved dorm life. 

If you're feeling overwhelmed by the thought of living in a dorm, don't panic. To help make the process of moving into a dorm room easier, I’ve rounded up a few editor-approved tips to get you through it. 

What are the best tips for living in a dorm?

1. Nail your storage but aim to live minimally 

Let's talk minimalism and storage. The key to living successfully in a more compact space is making sure that you have adequate storage in place and that you take on a more minimalist mindset. Don't panic — it's easier than you'd think. This might mean using bed risers to loft your bed (and create more space for storage), or it may mean upgrading your closet with plenty of space-saving storage solutions that allow you to utilize every inch of space. “Less is more” is totally a motto worth embracing.

2. Send home any random items you don’t use 

On the whole “less is more” note, any items that you pack but end up not needing, it’s worth taking the time to send home. Yep, really. After all, dorm space is super limited, so it doesn’t make sense to store items in there “just in case” you ever need them, does it? If you haven’t used an item in a month (and can’t imagine a time when you might need it) send it home or pack it in a suitcase for the next time you visit on a weekend or over a break.

3. Openly communicate with your roommate 

Living with a roommate can take some adjustment, especially if you’re used to having plenty of your own space. A handy tip for getting along with your roommate is to share expectations — and ask them to do the same — when you first move in together. Think about things like when one of you wants to go to sleep but the other would like to stay up to study or watch television, or when one of you wants to have guests in your room. Open communication is key, bb! 

4. Don’t take too many throw pillows 

Look, I get it. Throw pillows are seriously cute (and add a lot of much-needed comfort) but they also take up a lot of space. NGL, your bed would look cute topped with a pile of throw pillows, but when you want to go to bed they just get in the way or end up all over the floor. FYI, when I moved into my dorm I took a load of (really cute) throw pillows with me but it ended up being a mistake. I didn't even use them!

5. A fan is essential 

Dorms don’t (usually) come with AC, so when the weather gets hot, your space is most likely going to heat up, too. Luckily, there are quite a few ways to cool down your dorm room, and one great option is getting a good fan. Ideally, you want to opt for a fan that’s powerful but quiet enough not to upset your roommate. I forgot to take a fan to college my first summer and wow did I regret it — it was sooo hot I really struggled to sleep. 

6. Keep snacks on hand 

Our deputy editor Emily recommends taking plenty of snacks with you — and places to store said snacks, obvi (a mini fridge will be your BFF). For those times that the food hall is closed or you just don’t have the time or energy to leave your dorm in search of food, you’ll be super grateful to have snacks ready to go. Oh, and the same goes for drinks. Keep a healthy selection of your fave drinks on hand, so when you’re feeling thirsty you don’t have to worry about running out. 

7. Pack plenty of blankets

Dorms can be super cold. JSYK, space heaters aren’t allowed in a dorm (along with a whole host of other things). Our ecommerce editor Christina recommends bringing plenty of blankets with you. Ideally, you want to have two throws in addition to any comforter or duvet already on your list. That'll give you enough layers to keep warm whatever the weather but not so many that there’s no room to store them. 

8. Make sure to bring a lamp

Our global editor in chief Melissa recommends making sure that you add a good quality lamp to your packing list because dorm lighting can be annoyingly dark and dingy. When picking one out, just make sure that it feels warm and inviting and that the choice you opt for is approved by your college. A few lamp types — usually ones with open light filaments — are banned at some colleges.

I know, I know. The idea of keeping anything else alive when you already have to look after yourself between classes, tests, and clubs seems kinda daunting. I always used to kill all my plants. But I quickly realized that giving them the TLC they need is actually super simple (and effortless, too). Over the years, these are the helpful tips I've collected for easier and less stressful plant care.

• Always read the label that comes with your plant. It'll tell you everything that you need to know, from how much light the plant likes to how much water it needs. Snap a pic on your phone of the label so that you can refer to it whenever you need. 
• Make watering your plants easier with an automatic plant watering system (like these easy-to-use self-watering bulbs from Amazon). They're actually super affordable and make plant care a total breeze. 
• For easier watering, get a mister spray bottle that you can leave filled up and then grab and spritz whenever you remember.

I get it, it feels like a super basic item but you'd be amazed at how many freshmen fail to realize how essential a quality mattress topper is. The reality is that dorm beds are usually fitted with a basic (and potentially old) mattress, which means if struggle catching your Zs, it's only going to be worst. Enter: a super comfy mattress topper to adorn your mattress. Honestly, find the right one and it will change the game.

4. Statement bedding 

Basic, yes. But, hear me out. Investing in the best bedding is worth mentioning. Some colleges might offer linen, but you’re also allowed to take your own bedding. And, TBH, if you want to feel more at home in your dorm, that’s what we’d recommend. It's the perfect way to add a li'l extra style to your dorm by picking out some really quirky, unique bedding. I did this in my dorm and boy did it make a difference. 

5. Bed risers 

As our social media editor Nishaa — who is the queen of bed lofting — recommends, if you’re thinking of lofting your dorm bed, bed risers are an absolute must. But, before you buy, make sure to check with your college’s housing office. You might find that they supply lofting kits for free or have certain specifications that must be adhered to when lofting. 

6. Mini handheld vac 

Can't stand crumbs? Then you're going to need a mini handheld vac for your dorm. This is another recommendation from the team. Our editor-in-chief Melissa recommends taking a mini or handheld vac (like this cordless Black + Decker mini from Amazon) to college with you. You'd be surprised how quickly these tiny spaces get messy and rather than lugging the ancient vac in the residence hall closet to your room, you can have your own. 

7. Sodastream 

Forget wasting $$$ on can after can of your fave soda and instead treat yourself to a SodaStream (like this one from Amazon) to take to college with you. Yes, you have to pay a small chunk up front, but it'll save you a whole lot of money in the long run. Plus, it'll mean you can make yourself your fave soda whenever you want it without needing to leave your dorm. Don't sweat about outlet space either as a SodaStream doesn't run off of electricity, so you can literally put it anywhere. 

8. Mini ice maker 

Like having chilled drinks? Then a mini ice maker (like this countertop version from Amazon) is a dorm-room must-have. One of my college friends had one of these in their dorm and it got SO much use. Just be prepared to become the most popular person on your floor.

9. Plants (faux or real)

I know, I know, houseplants don’t exactly scream "college life" but a few carefully picked out plants for a tiny indoor garden can add a li'l something extra to your dorm. I didn’t take plants to college, but my roommate did and they made our dorm feel so much more homey. Whether you opt for real low-maintenance plants or faux alternatives, adding plants to your dorm is a great move.

Okay, so candles and wax melts are usually banned in dorms because you’re required to have a naked flame to burn them, right? Curtains or blinds are great for blocking out light and creating a more private space. Either one can help you feel more comfortable and relaxed in your room, even when your roommate is around. Use a tension rod to hang them up or get a hanging canopy. Even curtain panels can be used as a great tool for separation.

Hang up a tapestry

A tapestry (like this cute one from Urban Outfitters) could be utilized as a makeshift divider and can create a sense of privacy in your room, even if you don't have a lot of space. Although they're normally used as dorm wall decor, they easily double as a temporary wall. 

Put up a screen divider

Screen dividers create a separate space for sleeping or studying, which can assist you with focusing on your work or getting a good night's sleep, even if your roommate is being noisy. A good room divider also comes in handy if you move into a studio apartment down the road.

You’re in the process of packing to move into your first-ever college dorm (eek) and it strikes you that not everything you want to pack is actually allowed.  you’re wondering what you are and aren’t allowed to take with you. 

You probably have a pile going of all your fave items from your go-to bedding to your fave room spray, but what you might not have considered is what isn’t allowed in a dorm. That is, if you want to stay on your RA’s good side. 

To help make sure that you’re fully informed, we’ve used our own knowledge of college life, coupled with advice from some former RAs, to create a handy list of what isn’t allowed in a dorm room. 

What aren’t you allowed to have in your dorm room?

1. Candles 

While candles might smell glorious, the truth is that naked flames can be dangerous, which is why they’re banned at most (if not all) college dorms. A great alternative are LED battery-operated candles (like these real wax LED candles from Amazon) that flicker just like real candles but don’t carry the fire risk. There are also plenty of ways to make your dorm smell nice outside of wax and wicks.

2. A space heater

If you’re a cold person, then you might think that taking a space heater to college with you is a great way to stay toasty, but this is another item that’s banned in most dorm rooms, simply because of the fire risk. Opt for cozy blankets instead and stock up on cute sweatshirts.

3. Strip lighting 

While some colleges do allow LED strip lighting in their dorm rooms, others do not. Before you head out and buy 10 feet worth of strip lighting for your new dorm, make sure to check if it's actually allowed in your space (and while you're there, it's best to check what kind of lights in general you can bring). There are plenty of cute dorm lighting options out there if these are banned. 

4. Air fryers 

An air fryer might seem like a great tool to take to college and pop in your dorm, especially if you’re someone who loves to snack and cook, but the truth is most dorms actually ban air fryers due to the fire risk. Other small appliances are often allowed (like an electric kettle for making ramen), but double-check your university's list. 

5. Waffle makers 

If you’re a big waffle fan, you might love the idea of taking a waffle maker to college but if you do, the chances are that you’ll get it taken away from you by your RA. Why? Because waffle makers — like most other cooking appliances — aren’t allowed in your dorm room, due to the safety risk that they pose. Stick to the breakfast items in the dining hall, grab brunch with friends, or find a pal who's in an apartment for Sunay breakfasts!

6. Panini makers 

Yep, panini makers are another no-no for college dorm rooms. No matter how much you love grilled cheeses and other toasted sandwiches, you’re better off leaving your panini maker at home. It might be worth buying some non-toxic cookware and making the most of your shared kitchen if your hall has one!

7. Some lamps 

LED strip lights aren't the only banned items. While you’re able to take certain lamps to college with you, any lamps that feature an exposed lighting element aren’t usually allowed in a dorm room. So, you know those super cute neon lights that are all over TikTok? They’re sadly a big no-no. 

8. Extension cords without surge protection 

Extension cords can be mega useful in a dorm room where you have limited power outlets. But if you’re going to pack an extension cord, make sure that it’s one that features surge protection. Otherwise, you could get a random room check and get it taken away by your RA. 

9. Electric blankets  

Electric blankets might seem like just another cozy buy that helps keep you warm when the temps drop, but they actually pose quite a serious fire risk — hence why they’re banned in most college dorms. Instead, grab a wool blanket or bedding in materials that'll trap heat in.

A step-by-step guide for how to plan dorm essentials with your roomie

1. Make a checklist

Think of our expansive dorm packing list as the syllabus for your home life. You won’t want to start the semester without rounding up non-negotiables. If you’re not sure where to start, there’s no shame in doing a little research. (If anything, it’ll be good practice for what’s ahead.)

“You can ask older siblings or friends for recommendations to avoid repeating their rookie mistakes,” says Marine André, the founder of the professional organization company En Route To Joy.

But in addition to the basics like mini-fridges and mattress toppers, don’t forget about the things you love. (Within reason, of course—space is sacred). 

“A precious tip is to select items that spark the most joy so that you invite your personality and not only the useful stuff,” she adds. 

2. Get specifics

You wouldn’t purchase furniture for an apartment without asking your landlord for the dimensions, so why take a guess when it comes to dorm living? Before the semester gets underway, speak to reps from the university’s housing department to inquire about room specifics. 

What will fit? Is there an AC? Will there be private or communal bathrooms? If you could visit the space IRL before class starts, even better.  

“Has either roommate been able to scope out the dorm room already? Gather as much information about the size or the room and how the room is laid out,” Jean Prominski, the founder of Seattle Sparkle, recommends. 

By doing so, you won’t have to send Mom back to Target with a carload of returns once the semester begins. She’ll definitely be appreciative.

3. Plan together

If possible, reach out to your new roommate over the summer to get to know one another and discuss how you plan to set up your future space. Though the idea of living with someone you’ve never met could feel a bit intimidating, stay positive and keep an open mind.

“Communication is the key,” André insists. “Give yourselves time to talk about your options and preferences. Your roommate might have great ideas which you had not even considered.”

Not only will you want to work out who’s bringing what — perhaps you’re a culinary wiz who will handle the kitchen necessities and your roommate has a hand-me-down TV from her older sister — but you should discuss your lifestyle and habits, too. After all, you’re going to be swapping your fam for your roomie. 

“A great way to begin any new relationship is by identifying shared values. And this can hold true even for negotiating a dorm aesthetic,” says Susannah Munson, interior design leader at IKEA US. “It’s best to be as open as possible in communicating what is important to you, and in turn, being aware of your roommate's needs and desires, so that you both feel like you have a say in how the space is treated.” 

4. Find common ground

Both parties are going to have to do a bit of compromising upon getting situated, and this might be especially true when it comes to likes and personal style. 

“Of course, dorm life is not all cupcakes and Kumbaya all the time. You’re bound to have some striking differences in tastes when roommates get assigned at random,” Munson says. “But I must say, some of the best aesthetics come from a place of unexpected contrast. This is when it’s important to keep an open mind.” 

You should start the planning process by creating a mood board with your roommate or collabing on a Pinterest board with decor inspo. And yes, it is possible to make things work, even if it feels next to impossible

“If your styles are radically different, focus on selecting similar colors and marry shades so that no one gets a mini heart attack every time they walk into your room,” André says. 

5. Pack accordingly

If you’re a breezy 30 minutes from campus but your roomie is venturing cross-country on a flight, perhaps you should be responsible for the necessities that require a bit more heavy lifting. 

“Is one roommate coming from farther away, or is it more convenient for one roommate to supply certain items than the other? Take this into consideration as you choose which items to bring,” Prominski says. “Once you’ve compiled the list, take an inventory and write your name next to which items you have.”

6. Think ahead

Setting up might only take a day, but you and your roommate will be together for two semesters, if not more, so it’ll be important to set some ground rules for maintenance and such moving forward.

“When two strangers pair up in a dorm, you really never know what you’re going to get,” Prominski says. “I recommend dividing the space up into zones where each person has control and responsibility over that space.”

For a budget-friendly route, it’s worth stopping by a local thrift store such as Goodwill or browsing Facebook Marketplace for deals. If you live near campus, chances are you will have plenty of secondhand options from former students.

Kitchen checklist for college apartment  

Dishware  

Dishes are a kitchen necessity and, while you might have a couple of random mugs and bowls from dorm life, it helps to make a checklist to ensure you have everything you need in your new apartment. It’s worth purchasing at least one or two casserole dishes, a set of four glasses, and stocking up on mugs if you don’t already have them.    

Kitchen furniture  

While you can technically eat at your coffee table (and might end up doing so when up late studying), it’s important to have a designated space for enjoying your meal. When shopping for your first apartment, consider the kitchen space and what kind of dining situation will fit. You can find small kitchen table and chair sets, high-top tables with barstools, or full-size kitchen tables that fit four to six people. 

Cooking tools and utensils 

Shopping for cooking tools and utensils is relatively easy since many come in a set, so you don’t have to worry about getting all of the different types (or even knowing what they are all used for). Ikea is one of the best places to shop for kitchen tools and utensils, including kitchen utensil sets, flatware, and organizers.

Pots and pans 

Pots and pans are a kitchen must-have and you don’t need to spend a lot of money to get a good quality set when you shop at stores like Home Goods and Target. We recommend starting with a set of two different-sized pots and one skillet pan and then growing your collection from there. 

Kitchen appliances 

Most apartment rentals come with a refrigerator, stove, and oven — but there are a few additional small appliances you might want to stock up on to make cooking for one a lot easier. If you don’t already have one from your dorm room, definitely pick up a microwave, a small toaster (either a classic 2-slice style or a toaster oven), and an air fryer. 

Aside from those staples, you might need other small apartment appliances, such as a coffee maker, tea kettle, and blender. 

Bedroom checklist for college apartment  

 Bed & mattress

The most important checklist item for the bedroom is, of course, your bed. While you could technically leave your mattress on the floor — and we have totally done it—a real bed is actually a major storage hack for small spaces. Once you have your bed (and bed size) sorted out, consider the type of mattress you want. 

Pillows & bedding

To add to your bed’s comfort level, be intentional about your bedding choice. We love a linen sheet set or super soft jersey sheets. The best places to buy cheap comforters for your first apartment include Ikea, Home Goods, Amazon, and Walmart. 

For pillows, consider purchasing a couple of cheap options from Target or Amazon to fill your bed, and then investing in something with a little more support for your sleeping pillow, such as a memory foam pillow. 

Curtains 

Don’t forget about your window treatments! For the bedroom, you’ll definitely want some blackout curtains, which can not only keep the light out of your room after late-night study sessions but also save energy by keeping your bedroom warm or cool, depending on the season. 

Nightstand

A bedside table is also a must-have for your new apartment. We recommend getting one with plenty of storage so you can maximize your space. A classic three-drawer nightstand will definitely do the trick, however, if you want something with a little more oomph to it, we recommend a nightstand with both a drawer and a shelf.

Lighting

To ensure your room has plenty of lighting for late-night studying, it’s worth purchasing a table lamp for your nightstand as well as a floor lamp for your bedroom corner.  

 Bathroom checklist for college apartment  

Towels

While you might have some towels left over from dorm life, it’s worth stocking up on a few more or refreshing your collection entirely (especially if you purchased cheap towels, which don’t last long). Amazon is a fantastic place to shop for bath towel sets, which typically include a couple of bath towels, one hand towel, and some washcloths. 

Bath mat

Depending on the size of your bathroom, you’ll need at least one or two bath mats to keep your space dry when showering. We recommend one for under the sink and another that you can drape over the bathtub and use when getting out of the shower.  

Trash can 

To keep things sanitary in the bathroom, add a small trash can in the corner. And, if you don’t want to rinse it out on cleaning days, it’s also worth purchasing a roll of trash can liners.

Shower curtain

A shower curtain is functional, but it’s also a great opportunity to add some personal style to your rented apartment. When shopping for shower curtains, be sure to purchase a washable shower liner, too. That way, you don’t have to worry about mold and can easily throw it in the wash on cleaning days.   

Toothbrush holder

If you don’t have an electric toothbrush that comes with a stand, it’s worth purchasing a small toothbrush holder so that you don’t end up using a mug or glass (or just leaving your brush on your sink). 

Toilet brush and plunger

Use this opportunity to also purchase a toilet brush and plunger so that you don’t have to worry about it when the time comes to clean the bathroom or deal with an emergency situation.  

Living room checklist for college apartment  

Couch

When purchasing your first couch, we recommend not investing too much money since your couch likely won’t make it out of college with you. IKEA is one of the best places to find affordable couches for college apartments. You can also find some budget-friendly options at Walmart, Wayfair, and Amazon. 

Coffee table

A coffee table is a must-have for the living room. You can find several excellent options at IKEA or Target.

Rug

Even if your apartment has carpet, an area rug can really warm up a place and add a touch of style.

TV Stand

While you can technically hang your TV on the wall, it’s always a good idea to have either a TV stand or cube shelving unit underneath for extra storage.  

Bookshelf

While bookshelves can serve as a design moment, they’re also highly functional and an excellent way to keep all of your study materials close by. Consider purchasing a cheap bookshelf from IKEA, Walmart, or Target. For more splurge-worthy options, Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, and CB2 are some of our favorite places to find chic bookshelves.  

Other things you’ll need for your college apartment 

In addition to these items, it’s also worth stocking up on a few other miscellaneous apartment essentials, such as cleaning supplies, a cordless vacuum, extension cords, a broom and dustpan set, and batteries. 

It’s also worth putting together an emergency kit with a flashlight in case the power goes out, a fire extinguisher (if your apartment doesn’t come with one), and first-aid supplies. 

You don't have to be a 100% sustainable sis to invest in eco-friendly dorm essentials. But, if you've got the ick from plastic and polyester-derived picks — you're well on your way to doing your part for the planet.

It can be so tempting to add lots of cheap and cheerful odds and ends to your dorm packing list, but often things that are suspiciously affordable are *too* good to be true. Most are made miles away with toxic chemicals and fossil fuels, and while California has got its own laws (like Proposition 65) those don't automatically protect everyone from the consequences of adding unsustainable picks to their college inventory.

Dorm room headboards are probably one of the most underrated pieces of decor you could have in your student digs. But trust me, as someone who might as well have a double major in comfort and style, I couldn't live without my "head" of the bed.

Most college rooms come furnished with a bed and storage, but there are loads of reasons why a college headboard should be on your dorm packing list. White walls? Yawn. I don’t mind a minimalism moment, but wall decor is such an easy way to quickly bring personality into small spaces. You could cover the whole wall like @jade_madeline did for a wallpaper-style effect, or just hang a few prints to create an accent wall. Oh, and FYI, I always look to Fy! and Desenio for unique prints that are low-cost.

2. Make your kitchenware match

Yes — even eating and drinking in your dorm can be aesthetic AF. Electric kettles, straws, plates, and small appliances can all come in gorgeous shades of pink, as showcased by @gracefully.pink. In my opinion, there are two really great things about college. One, the studying. Don’t yawn at me — that’s your future right there. Then two, the memory creating. That means meeting new people and having the most fun time. One of the best ways to do that? Throwing the ultimate dorm room party, baby.

Of course, you can’t plan the memories, but you can set things up for people to have a really good time. As a former college student who has been to and thrown her fair share of parties, I know what works and what doesn’t.

As well as nailing the core basics, there are a few tricks I’ve picked up along the way. Thoughtful touches and fun activities all make such a difference and will get people fully into the mood. 1. Make sure there’s plenty of seating

You don’t want people to feel uncomfortable standing around awkwardly, as this kills the vibe. Instead, make sure you utilize all the seating you have. Throw some accent pillows onto the floor in a li’l circle for a cute place to chat. Put plenty of chairs around your table, so there’s lots of room for people to play games. Then, make sure your couch looks extra inviting by throwing pillows and blankets on it. By doing all this, there will be lots of places for people to join in conversations.

2.  Lay out plenty of snacks

One thing that college students love? Free food. You don’t need to spend a lot of dollar on this either. A few bags of chips and jars of dips go a long way, trust me. Shake the chips out into a big bowl, so people feel welcome to dive in. For those with a sweet tooth, go for boxes of mini muffins and brownie bites. If you’re feeling generous, pizzas (either from the store or takeout) also always go down well. Oh, and be sure to have a few beverages around too — especially mixers like lemonade and cola, as these are often overlooked!

3. Go for fun lighting 

It’s amazing how much lighting can change a room. First things first: the big light is not the one to go for when you want to create a party atmosphere. Instead, go for lots of smaller lights instead. 5. Have a few games ready

Look, I love a good Monopoly board as much as the next gal. But for a college party? That’s a hard pass, sis. Instead, have a few different games dotted around the room. They don’t have to be super complex — for example, this could literally be a pack of cards, for card games like poker and blackjack. Additionally, have a few in the back of your head to roll out, such as truth or dare or never have I ever. Don’t want to run out of questions too quickly? 6. Get the music playing

Whenever anyone asks me to play my fave music at a party, I literally cringe inside, as my music taste is very random. That’s why I always roll out Spotify instead! If you’re really organized and have a party group chat going, you could always put a shareable link to the playlist in there, so people can put in their fave tunes. 7. Let your RA/neighbors know

The last thing you want when you’re partying is to have a knock on the door and your whole party shut down. Instead, let your RA and any neighboring dorms know that you’re having a bsha, and ask them if there are any rules that need to be followed. Check your dorm contract too for anything like curfew stipulations. Then, on the night, make sure to keep the noise down and the music at a reasonable level, so you don’t get any complaints.

Besties, we all know that there’s something about adding your favorite scent to your dorm room that makes it feel a li'l more like home. The right home fragrance can create an instant sense of calm, while also freshening the air and preventing that awful stale college hall smell from creeping in. But the chances are that if you’re living in a dorm, you’re probs not allowed to light candles. Because of health and safety, obvi. 1. Use room spray or air freshener

A simple and quick way to freshen up any space (including your dorm) is to use a room spray or an air freshener. Find the right solution to spritz and it can instantly uplift the room. When it comes to picking room mists, it’s a good idea to steer clear of highly chemical-based formulas, and instead opt for essential oil-based sprays. For room sprays, my personal go-tos include Aromaworks Room Mist and This Works Deep Sleep Spray from Amazon (which I know is made for pillows but it also works to freshen the air).

2. Treat yourself to an essential oil diffuser

This is a little bit more of an investment, but if you want to spend some of your decor budget on an essential oil diffuser, I promise you won’t regret it. They might come with a larger outlay than a scented candle but, in the long run, an essential oil diffuser will save you a heck of a lot of money, compared to buying candle after candle. 

3. Let in the breeze

Feel like your dorm is feeling a little stale? Aim to crack a window at least once a day and you should find that your dorm feels much fresher. Or, if you’re unable to open your windows, an air purifier could be another great option for cleaning the air and getting rid of nasty odors. 

4. Get a candle warmer

Okay, so you might not be able to light candles in your dorm, but there’s no reason you can’t warm them using a candle warmer instead. Candle warmers are a great way to enjoy scented candles without actually burning them, and BTW there are lots of srsly cute designs to choose from. I think this one from Amazon that I’ve been lusting after is super cute! 

5. Use a flameless wax melter

Another great option for adding fragrance to your dorm and making the space smell dreamy is to get some of your fave wax melts and an electric wax melter. I am obsessed with mine. I love how much longer my melts (and their scent) last when heated by a bulb rather than a flame. I melt the same ones again and again without losing any of the smell. 1. Glow up the space with fairy lights

As TikTok always says, turning the big light on is way too much. I’ve often found that college lights are way too bright, and they never seem to be adjustable either. Enter the classic fairy light! Even if you aren’t allowed to stick them onto your wall, you can drape them along your bed headboard, nightstand, and desk to make your space glow!

2. Throw on blankets

When it comes to getting cozy, I’m such a tactile girlie. It’s gotta be soft, and it’s gotta bring me comfort. That’s why I absolutely love blankets. Not only will they provide extra warmth at nighttime, but they’re also great for wrapping up in before you delve into dorm movie nights with your new besties. Knitted, faux fur, and crochet textures are my go-tos, as they look seriously aesthetic. 

3.  Add a few (fake) candles

Most dorm rooms don’t allow candles (*sobs*), but you can get pretty close to the same vibe with battery-powered ones. While they won’t give off delish scents like regular candles, they will provide the same soft, flickering light. Have one next to your nightstand instead of a lamp, or even dot a few around your room.

4. Place accent pillows on your bed

I know, I know. It can be so tempting to get tucked into bed, like all the time. But when you’re hanging out in your dorm room, you can’t lie in bed all day! Equally, you can’t just sit on the bed without anything to properly rest on. That’s where accent pillows come in, baby. As well as being super comfy, they’re an easy way to brighten up the interior.

5. Make it personal with pictures

Homesickness is not a nice feeling and can be a real struggle. I personally found that hanging up pictures was a really comforting visual way to remember memories with friends and family. You could even carry a disposable camera (they’re back!) around with you on campus to capture some new memories to hang up.

It’s easy to assume that opening your windows on a hot day would help to cool your dorm down but actually letting the warm air from outside into your room will push the temperature up, instead of cooling the space.
