Windows and doors: preparing your home for the summer

With the summer months around the corner, now is the time to ensure your home is ready for summer entertaining and enjoying the warmer weather.

One of the first things to check is that your windows and doors still operate smoothly. If you try to open your sash window and it immediately drops or the window sticks when you try to open and close it, now is the time to get these issues fixed.

An advantage of timber windows is that they can often be repaired if problem is identified and dealt with promptly. With regular maintenance and minor repairs, timber windows can last hundreds of years before requiring replacement.

Repairing and upgrading your windows

If your timber windows have been letting in the cold weather over the winter months, now is the perfect time to repair or upgrade them while the weather is warmer. This could just mean draught proofing and overhauling the existing windows or if you have single glazed windows you may wish to upgrade them to double glazed windows.

It is worth noting that most reputable companies who are working on bespoke timber windows will have a lead time of at least a couple of months before the work can be carried out. It is important to take this into account for any work you are looking to have carried out.

If your timber windows or doors are rotten, you may need to replace them. Depending on the condition of the frames, you may be able to install new sashes into the existing window frames. Window frames often have a longer life than the moving parts of the window (the sashes) as they are more protected from the external elements.

Prepare your home for summer entertaining

With the warmer weather on the way, why not look at combining your indoor and outdoor spaces with new bi-fold doors?

Bi-fold doors are a popular improvement to a home, so if you are looking to undertake a renovation project this summer, they are definitely worth considering. Bi-fold doors run along a simple track and are hinged to fold open.

For larger properties, bi-fold doors can provide you with a completely unrestricted opening, something you cannot achieve with other external doors. They also provide greater flexibility than French doors, allowing you to open the doors as much, or as little, as you like.
