Although there are machines and materials available to help with the process of making traditional windows, the best windows are still put together by hand by an experienced joiner on a woodworking bench.
Don't forget that windows can always be repainted and glass can always be re-glazed, but if the base product (the joinery) fails it will almost certainly need replacing. A superior base product, made with superior timber will forgive any temporary lapses in maintenance or neglect over the years.

Warranties are very important, whilst they may look simple, traditional windows and doors are complex in their design and manufacture. Reputable companies should be offering ten years warranty on any glazing and at least 20 years on the base joinery product. A good warranty from a well established company will tell you a lot about the windows and doors that you are going to get.
